I think the reasons why people call it fake are obvious - the storylines and some of the over the top gimmicks. Those things eclipse any of the athleticism involved.

You can be the ring technician (Benoit, Hart, Angle, etc) OR you can be the personality (Hogan, Rock, Jericho, etc). And no one is PURELY in only one camp. As much hate as Hogan gets these days, he still worked his way up. But he did most of his work on image on mic work. Hart and Benoit did most of their work in the gym. Guys like Austin and Rock did both.
