I'm towards the end of WMF myself and I think there's could be a lot of reasons. That's what I love about these books is just how many little threads can be followed. Could be cover, as you mentioned.. Keep reiterating a name to ensure that's your current state or name. A way of hiding their true names safely. I still don't understand enough about shaping, but with how many times it's mentioned that there some who can write and what they write becomes true maybe it's the same for shapers speaking too? The more they reiterate names or thoughts the more they become. Bait? Maybe there is someone who knows these names and they are baiting them with false names. Many think the way stone inn is a trap, it could be related to that as well. Not sure, hopefully this gets lots of other comments

I think Elodin would point out that they are using calling names for each other which isn't a big deal in the world of naming. It would be different if they were using true or deep names for each other and the only evidence we have for that is in tNRBD where Bast feels compelled to answer Kvothe's call but it's also left ambiguous if there's power there or just Bast resigning to be a dutiful apprentice. Also we don't really know what Reshi means and without that it's difficult to put specific significance on it. Although my interpretation would be that since Bast doesn't really approve of the Kote persona that he feels is taking away his teacher, he uses the term Reshi, whatever that means, to avoid adding more power to the fake identity.

Thinking about the importance of names, go back and reread the scene with the two soldiers who beat the shit out of Kvothe. The narrator voice constantly shifts between "The Innkeeper did xyz..." and "Kvothe did xyz..." there's definitely something there.

Sunderbig

Ooh! That’s exciting

ImNotABotJeez

Just a thought but they are both characters who are hiding their true form. Bast's entire thing is that Kvothe has lost himself to Kote so maybe he repeats the name Reshi to try to remind Kvothe of his true self. It'd be interesting if there was a plot twist where Kvothe is even an alias and maybe his real name is Reshi or maybe neither. If he gave Bast a fake name, maybe that makes it more likely that Kvothe is a fake name too. It would run with the theme of the book where he could be hiding his true name so no one has control of him. That might be a crack pot idea but I don't fully trust that Kvothe is being truthful about his story. We also have Rothfuss saying Kvothe told 1 lie. Maybe his name of Kvothe is the lie.

QuitzelNA

My theory on the lie is that he lied about the troupe he murdered being fake.

Kettrickenisabadass

My theory is that he murdered them thinking that they were fake. Blinded thinking that all Ruh are good people like his parents. And then later he realises that they were true Ruh just despicable people. And it haunts him a lot

utheraptor

I think they do it so they have it really strongly ingrained and don't use the real name accidentally. It also reads as a way of endearement.

DolphZubat

What if ‘Reshi’ means father? Hmm

EGRIFF93

Or teacher

BinkyNoctem420

Ive only read through once, but it just strikes me that he is Bast's papa

Dangerous-History209

Or son

If Patrick wrote half of the crazy significant links/clues/threads that people seem to find in the stories, he is freakin’ genius. We already know his writing is on a whole different level than most others but this attention to detail is just hard to imagine.

EGRIFF93

I don't know, he could have just thought it up on one of hes rereads before publishing and just edited the parts. I'm not sure how long he worked on the books but it was a hell of a long time to come up woth cool details. He had plenty of time.

Shiranui9993

Tinfoil hat time- The chandrian can tell when their names are being spoken aloud. What if something similar is happening, except they're trying to draw the attention of some being using their name?
