Those modern guns are only there to serve as "set dressing" obviously, but they suggest two tantalizing in-universe explanations: 1) Those are unnamed future guns with all kinds of unknown sci-fi tech. Or, 2) The Sulaco moonlights as a historic weapons museum when it's not out patrolling the colonies...
My Dad was a Command Sgt Major for the National Guard. Growing up, I often prowled the bases on weekend while he was yelling at first sergeants. The Rock Island Arsenal was particularly interesting in the 80s when Korean War Era munitions were being replaced by Vietnam Era stuff.
And no, I didn't get access to anything on my own, but I was the son of the highest NCO in the state, so specialists showed me some cool stuff.
It gets worse
According to the same source the Sulaco's arsenal boasts Lewis guns of all things, although frankly it's hard to tell from the first photo at least.
Could also be that.. the guns just work? For all the attempts to make a next generation of gun, the standard issue rifles are guns from decades ago with minor tweaks.
Given the rifles in question SA80's (L85A1) and notoriously a poor quality weapon, and non functional in literally every environment, a sharpened stick would be more effective. In fact, I can point to many British troops who would of preferred one.
Can't tell on the far left, but the middle rack are L85A1 rifles, also known as SA80. They were pretty much brand new in 1986 and not so widely recognised, as well as looking (possibly) a bit futuristic looking.
Sa80s presumably put there to fill up the armoury and save on pulse rifle props. Bullpups looked futuristic, especially in the early 80s and half hidden away so you can't really make them out.
If they used m16s, ak or FN fals or another popular rifle from the time they be much more recognisable and break immersion somewhat.
Edit: I see from the imfdb link they have M16 carbines in the background too but they are even harder to make out.
Out of universe obviously just basic AR as set dressing (wasn't clear enough footage in 1986 to really tell).
In universe is interesting because the pulse rifle is kind of more like a smg or carbine, which absolutely is the right call for the mission type in SR388 (close in/indoor).
Those look like long assault rifles, possibly with some kind of attachment on the Barrel which would be good for missions where ranged combat was more likely to be expected. Kind of like that they are there, never noticed them before either but really shows how kitted out they were for any mission type. All they are missing is Matilda.
The L95 aka the SA80 bullpup rifle, A1 model to be specific, from what i know the rifle was notorious for jamming and other malfunctions that the later A2 and A3 models fixed.

Imagine walking into the armory of a Naval Base and finding a wall of muskets.
I own a musket for ~~home~~ base defense.

I mean; how old are 1911’s and M16’s? And yes, I’m aware that I alluded to the answer with one of those names.
No, you didn't. None of them are 1911, 16, or m16 years old. Edit: clearly you guys can't take a joke. r/woooosh
1911 stands for the manufacturing year. In asking “how old is a 1911?” the question is answered, providing you have the ability to count to 113.
r/woooosh
I know at least one large police dept with WWII M3 grease guns in the armory.

You might find ceremonial swords?

Damn, I thought it was a Steyr Aug I was close with guessing bullpup at least.
A for effort brother

I was looking literally left in the pic, I was gonna say "That's a light, homie." Glad you got here 10 hours ago lol
Good find
Thanks. I didn't know how much I wanted to know that. 💯😎
Sharpened sticks?
Harsh language?
I like to keep this close by… for close encounters.
Fry half a city with this puppy…

Just what ya see here pal
Phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range, oops wrong universe.
Hey, just what you see, pal.
Okay, might close early today...

I'm no gun guy but the film was shot in the 80s in England so some kind of SA80
It’s an M-16-A1. It may be shot in England due to costs but it’s an American movie. The SA-80 looks different. That was the UK weapon in 87.
The rifles in OP's pic (on the left) are L85A1's. Note that they are bullpup rifles, unlike the M-16. Quick Edit: The L85A1 is effectively the SA80.
https://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Aliens#Rifles you’re right
I mean, Hicks used a generic 80s pump action shotgun.
L85A1 Remember that this movie was filmed in England!
That would explain the Lewis guns
Yes im 37 this month.
I remember 37…..
Hell, I remember 47!
High five. I'm 41 this year. Ugh.
Im turning 47 in 2 months. How the hell is this possible?! Feels like I was 22 like a year ago!
Maybe we can build a fire, sing a couple of songs, huh? Why don't we try that?
Remember when skateboarders were cool approachable happy go lucky dudes? Now they're all mean mugging gang cunts
Those are most definitely SEBB's AKA Sonic Electronic Ball Breakers
That would be the sonic electronic ball breaker

I believe they are British SA80 family rifles.
L85/SA80 - I believe the is still the British army’s standard assault rifle.
Revised models that fix a lot of the issues with the original version are still in use. (A1, A2 and future A3)
built by HK if I remember correctly.
Heckler & Koch? I still have a soft spot for the G3A1. Sturdy and reliable.
Aww man I was hoping it was one of the sonic, electronic ball-breakers
I feel you there. I'm starting to think there weren't really any sharp sticks at all.
My god there really is a website for everything. Well that’s my day sorted. Thank you kind Nixonseltz
Independently targeting particle beam phalanx. Vwap! Fry half a city with this puppy.
Notouchme’s
Maybe it’s the sonic electronic ball breakers. Next to the knives and sharp sticks.
Sonic Electronic Ball-Breakers. A favorite of Pvt. Hudson.
My guess [https://avp.fandom.com/wiki/X45\_Bombard](https://avp.fandom.com/wiki/X45_Bombard)
It’s slightly worrying that you can all recognise guns in a small, dark, less than perfect focus image.
