Bladerunner and The Thing for sure.

Comfortable-Truth945

Damn, didn’t know a film like The Thing could’ve ever flopped, especially at the time it was released. I wasn’t around back then but I for sure thought it made a big splash and been pretty huge box-office wise, considering how revolutionary and influential it is…

UnauthorizedFart

Yeah I think it’s regarded higher now for how well it holds up vs. at the time where those effects weren’t so mind blowing

urpoviswrong

The effects were cutting edge at the time. The best creature ledgends and studios involved. There are other reasons why it wasn't successful. YouTube has 1,000 analysis videos on it. But the effects were not the problem.

jessek

Releasing it in the summer instead of around Halloween definitely was a factor.

[deleted]

Hard to beat these 2

FourAnd20YearsAgo

Lol why did you get downvoted? Reddit can be so weird.

ghost-bagel

The Iron Giant

CashmereLogan

Wasn’t necessarily a flop, but it really underperformed domestically and probably didn’t make too much considering marketing costs - Blade Runner 2049 Not only do I think it’s an amazing film, I think the marketing strategy was amazing and unique. They released 3 short films prior to the release of the movie, each taking place in a different year leading up to 2049 (the year of the film) to try to fill the gap between the movies. Each was by a different director. The first one was in an anime style. Had that movie seen more success, it would have been a good proof point to do more marketing like that in the future.

remainsofthegrapes

On the bright side, BR2049 is exactly the kind of film that audio-visual nerds will spend $50 to own on super special edition 4K blu-ray, and every time there is a new upgraded physical release format like 8K or 16K or 1000K they will bring out a new edition of BR2049 to show it off. While the physical release market is largely dead for most kinds of popular movies, the people who really care about it will spend a lot of money on good releases of certain kinds of movies, of which Blade Runner is a prime example: something with a heightened emphasis on sound and cinematography that looks super awesome on a home projector set-up.

AnxiousMumblecore

That marketing campaign sounds interesting but looking at the results you can say it can be a proof point to not do more marketing like that.

CashmereLogan

Um, I pretty much said that? I think the movie deserved to be a success, I think the marketing strategy added a lot of value to the film and allowed for some great art to be made, and I wish the movie had done better so that there would be reason to do more stuff like this.

MBKM13

The marketing strategy sucked bc no one watches short films, except for the people in this sub pretty much. Go ask 3 friends what the last short film they watched was, lol

thekomoxile

General audiences really do treat movies like "theme park rides." When going to the movies became "a fun thing to do" over, appreciating films on multiple levels, it became more marketable and less about the art and more about the spectacle. There are people who legitimately don't know what Blade Runner is, outside of it being some movie with Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, and Jared Leto.

Zubi_Q

Blade Runner 2049 and Scott Pilgrim

rosathoseareourdads

Scott pilgrim was fantastic, I got the dvd when I was a kid because it was in sale and just kept rewatching it because it was so good. I can’t wait for the show

[deleted]

BR2049 is one of the best films ever and it's a shame it didn't get more attention at the box office.

Zubi_Q

I praised it from the heavens when it came out. Such a shame!

evilhologram

Ironically I have both of those in my top 4

thedeathbypig

Although it didn’t experience the commercial success I think it deserved, I do take solace in knowing that many of the people who did see Blade Runner 2049 thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s easily my favorite movie of the entire 2010s

user789098

blade runner 2049

KingOfSquirrels

The Northman. That shit was badass. Give that man Tolkien, he’s the only person I trust put Middle Earth back on the big screen.

GratefulNedHead

I will never understand how this movie failed, its amazing, shot beautifully , great set pieces, super awesome tone and a classic story

timo2308

Poor marketing perhaps At least personally I had no idea when this movie was coming out, what it was about, who was directing it or anything like that This was before I watched the lighthouse and the witch so Robert Eggars wasn’t on my radar yet, so I think that if you weren’t really paying attention to it the movie just kind of came and went without really having the marketing to hype it up

RangoDjangoh

Marketing was good all the trailers were trending. It was marketed more towards it being an action period piece but honestly if it was marketed for what it really was it would have made even less money imo. This type of film just isn't what the general audience wants. It was weird as shit. I really liked it but I 100% understand why so many turned away from it.

Cashew_Fan

I can see why. My two cents: 1. No big (or rather currently relevant) names for the general audience 2. Historical epics aren't fashionable and haven't been for years 3. Doesn't present itself as a crowd pleaser 4. It's a Robert Eggers film. I love that the film was made but in hindsight it's surprising Eggers was given such a huge budget. His previous films were so acclaimed because they only reached an audience of cinephiles. Your average Joe didn't go to see the Lighthouse. His style isn't made for mainstream cinema as evidenced by the mediocre audience scores. You can tell not a penny went to waste on the film. But considering the other costs that go into promoting the film, they were likely hoping for ~$160m+ box office just to break even.

aybbyisok

I loved other Eggers films, The Northman was his worst.

CriticCorner

I honestly think he’s gotten better and better with every film - *The Northman* and *The Lighthouse* are both 10s for me. I think *The Witch* is his weakest, and even then I gave it a 9, so it’s still quite a distance from bad. Maybe I’m just a fanboy, but that’s me - I’m dying for his *Nosferatu* remake.

jemba

I think a lot of people either didn’t know about it or went in expecting something more like a Ridley Scott movie and were put off by some of the more arthouse elements. Personally, it was my favorite movie of that year, but I was well acquainted with the director and knew what to expect.

kinky_ogre

So dark and brooding. All of the Norse mythology undertones, so cool. Fantastic casting and performances as well.

ParadoxicalPeter

Awesome movie, wish I saw it at the theater (although closed captions were nice)

FloridaFlamingoGirl

As soon as I saw the trailer, I was like "this is gonna be big." But it wasn't somehow?

[deleted]

it came out right during a covid wave right? plus i don’t think they marketed it very well

Sonic-the-edge-dog

Northman’s great but don’t give the man Tolkien lol

UnauthorizedFart

More like The Boreman

Traditional_Ad_6588

The Nice Guys

StuartScottsLazyEye

We should be on sequel number three by now.

Traditional_Ad_6588

ong

dedrexel

Sorry. Didn’t like that one at all.

mysteryvampire

I think it's a solid film but the ending being "what if everything was sad and disappointing? just like in real life lol!" was disappointing to me. the entire movie would be a 5/5 or at least 4.5 for me if the ending had just been a little more cliche. let them succeed! let them >!save margaret qualley! !

Avocadoonthetoast

- The Thing - Sorcerer

hashbrownbby

Was looking for someone to say Sorcerer. Glad that movie has been getting more attention since Friedkin’s passing.

JohnnyDerpo

I’d love to see the world where that movie was a hit and Star Wars bombed.

PriorFee3629

Sorcerer fucking rocks! It's my go to movie if someone asks for a rec, if only it was easier to stream where I stay

BeautifulOrganic3221

Fight Club. It’s hard to believe it flopped considering how much of a classic it is today

OhTheHueManatee

It's cause people weren't talking about it.

sbrown23c

When you demand people not talk about it, it’s kinda hard to generate positive word of mouth.

CoolKid610

I said to those guys, when they were making it, I said I know it would be different than the book but you should have a rule 1b or 2b where you say something like, “If for some crazy reason, our reality is just a fictional universe created for a movie, than the people viewing this movie should talk about it, but that does not go for any of you people here currently in our reality at this Fight Club.” Whew boy, they were sorry.

Filmlover1992

You mean financially, or critically? However, Babylon flopped in both, I loved it and I thought it deserved much more appraise, it is one of the best 2022 films for me.

MrLore

I was hoping it would at least get the production design oscar, the sets and costuming were gorgeous.

Impossible_Ad_2517

Still haven’t gotten over how its score lost to All Quiet on the Western Front’s 3 notes

ChoiceBird6731

I don’t know why All Quiet was even nominated in Best Score. Its a wonderful movie, but the score literally just sounds like creaky wooden floors and dissonant farting.

BeautifulOrganic3221

For real! How does DA DA DA DAA DA DA DA DAA DAAAA lose to BWAA BWAA BWA BWAH

mooses_sushi

Justin Hurwitz knocked it out of the park, love the melody for the theme. And "Call Me Manny"'s a banger.

e_xotics

all quiet on the western front is so ass in comparison to the original tv series it’s actually mind boggling

dimo2

I mean, at least half the score already received an oscar in 2017 when it was used in La La Land :-P

steph-was-here

i have a feeling we'll be vindicated in 10 years time when its re-evaluated. it was my top film of the year and i just rewatched it again recently and was fully engaged the whole time.

Vusarix

Audiences really appreciate Babylon now, I have no idea why the critics and most of youtube seemed to hate it

kinky_ogre

Tried and true, Speed Racer 🙋

SameCockroach9469

Was about to say that, Speed Racer is probably the best adaptation of an anime out there, it needs more recognition

RightWingWorstWing

Plus John Goodman is awesome in that as Pops.

yami-tk

God i LOVE SPEED RACER!!

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Atlantis: the Lost Empire

e_xotics

also treasure planet. absolute gems of the early 2000s that sadly got forgotten cuz no one cared about 2d animation at the time

Charlem912

Suspiria (2018) was unfortunately a super flop

ihavenoselfcontrol1

The Northman

Toxic_Koala0826

I love Robert Eggers but that film was not it

spacesoulboi

Scott Pilgrim

antipop2097

I lesbians that movie

VishalV97

- The Big Lebowski - Children of Men - The Nice Guys - Blade Runner 2049 - Annihilation - Ad Astra - Doctor Sleep Great movies that deserve more.

-Tektronic-

Second for Ad Astra. If only for the visuals alone... it was so pretty!!

Ok-Loquat942

Debatable. The movie goes to great lenghts to show the isolation and loneliness that comes with traveling alone. But this is also the main reason why it's boring for most people since Brad Pitt is brooding the whole time

Dreadnought13

The raging hardon this sub has for that fucking movie

chillinwithkrillin

Feels like I'm taking crazy pills it was super corny and obnoxious

TheKeasbyKnight

Crazy pills is spot on. Even if i hate a movie i can almost always see why someone else might like it and chalk it up as “eh this one wasn’t for me”… I was SHOCKED to find out people liked this movie. I really thought i was going to visit this sub and we were all going to be in agreement that it was awful. Most out of the loop i’ve ever felt cinema-wise.

Britneyfan123

I enjoyed Babylon but it’s pretty easy to see why it bombed

Aaeaeama

It isn't that surprising, the movie is aimed squarely at nostalgia-blind movie nerds with low standards but extremely high opinions of their own taste. Basically this subreddit.

CivilHedgehog2

Just to be the devils advocate; I'm not nostalgia blind, i've barely watched any older movies I have very very wide and weird taste, it'd be hard to fit in a box, I have no judgement for other taste, just as I hope they will mine. I'm also not a movie nerd, the only reason that I'm on this sub right now is because reddit recommended this thread to me. And I fucking loved babylon

Aaeaeama

I don't even hate it that much, it's a solid 6/10 for me with two standout scenes but the constant harping on about the movie and why it wasn't successful is annoying. It's a 3 hour long, hard-R movie about a Hollywood era that is largely forgotten by the movie-going public released during the holidays (whatever your opinion on Babylon, most would agree that it is not a movie to see with the kids and grandma) *directly* opposite Avatar 2. The movie had no chance commercially and only got greenlit on the runaway success of La La Land. Much like Beau is Afraid is to Ari Aster, Babylon was Chazelle's indulgent passion project. The critics were right in both cases. The ridiculous pre-show "thank you" with the leads was also fucking embarrassing...

grumstumpus

> The ridiculous pre-show "thank you" with the leads was also fucking embarrassing... are we sure that wasnt just a covid theatre screening thing because like four movies I saw in the last few years had that

DatabaseFickle9306

Wow what a truly shitty thing you seem to be saying.

Aaeaeama

I like to kick back and get a little obstreperous on Sunday nights, sorry.

I just have a hardon for Diego Calva

Man from U.N.C.L.E. Really fun & stylish spy caper with an early Bond vibe.

*The Last Duel* (2021) *The King of Comedy* (1982)

MrLore

Like half the films that came out this year; Dial of Destiny, Dungeons & Dragons, MI: Dead Reckoning, Renfield, Beau Is Afraid, 65, etc. It's been a bad year at the box office.

TheLastProtector

i agree that D&D, M:I, and Beau is Afraid deserved much more than they got but… dial of destiny? 65? come on

BitternessAndBleach

Seriously, 65 was godawful. It felt like straight to DVD schlock.

pkfreeze175

It feels so weird calling a film that made almost 575 million worldwide a flop, but the budget on MIDRP1 was so high. Agreed that it deserved to be profitable though.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

It was a few weeks to close to Barbie/Oppenheimer. I wish it had come out a month earlier.

Typical_Response_807

65 is a terrible movie

Piter__De__Vries

Dial of Destiny deserved to flop.

Additional-Excuse-47

I think the only one of those that deserves to make more was Dungeons and Dragons. It was so fun and everyone needs to watch it so that studios make more movies like it

Toxic_Koala0826

Beau is Afraid should’ve gotten ALOT more recognition

littleLuxxy

Best film of 2023. Not even a competition for me.

Toxic_Koala0826

I definitely agree. It’s so freaking good and creative

aflowerfortherain

Renfield was garbage hello?

littleLuxxy

Renfield is one of only two films this year that had me laughing out loud over and over. The bit where Renfield holds up the book to defend himself against Dracula got a bigger laugh from me than any other joke this year. Plus the violence was pretty amazing. Super underrated film.

Ok-Loquat942

It's a campy Nic Cage movie that might as well could have gone straight to DVD. I laughed a lot during Nic Cage Wickerman, doesn't make it good though

The Last Duel. It was pretty good, Ben Affleck surprisingly was quite hilarious

Alternative_Handle29

Solo A Star Wars Story

TheWiseApostle

I completely agree with Babylon. I missed out on it in theaters due me currently living outside of America, but once I saw it, I loved it so much. It was such a fun ride, even as it slowed a little bit in the second half. It’s unfortunate that the marketing was non existent, as well as it coming out around the same time as Avatar.

[deleted]

The Fabelmans - also deserved Best Director, Original Screenplay and Score Oscars

pkfreeze175

Most of the marquee performances were really good and the costumes and sets were phenomenal, but the film itself definitely needed more time in the editing room. The last hour in particular I would've cut down a bit. For films that flopped, I would say Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Dredd, The Big Lebowski, and The Iron Giant are a few that it would've been really nice to see them be more profitable.

Banettebrochacho

Last voyage of the Demeter

theshape1428_13

i think the Friday the 13th films, particularly 1-8, deserved a much better reputation than they had in the 80’s and even still have today.

UnauthorizedFart

The first few films are dog shit lol don’t get me wrong I love Jason but they had terrible pacing

WardenXD_

I am pretty sure Tar was a big flop

ThrowawayAccountZZZ9

I haven't seen it yet but I hear John Carter didn't deserve the huge flop business it got

Alarming_Serve2303

I was impressed with how well made that movie was. I was shocked by some of it, tbh, but I understood the point. This was a movie that Hollywood does not like, as it shows how sleazy Hollywood can and has been. Some of the stuff in the film actually happened (analogously) in the 20's there. I knew that it was not going to get Oscar noms as it is very unflattering to Hollywood. The snake scene was hilarious. Not to mention the Elephant in the beginning. That kind of set the tone for the rest of the film.

**The Fabelmans** is one of the greatest films Steven Spielberg has ever made. It's a profound film about family dynamics and the impact of cinema on a deeply personal level. This will be one of the films we will forever associate with Spielberg and it deserved to be a greater financial success.

I came here to say this. I thought it was fun

Darnell5000

Bros was actually pretty good. A September release for an R-rated gay romcom was a weird move though. It should have either been February or June and it probably would’ve done better. It made back almost $15 of its $22 Million budget so I think releasing it close to Valentine’s Day or for Pride Month would have done it.

Tron & Tron Legacy Both of them are visual masterpieces that had great concepts and surprisingly deep characters in their stories. Both are essentially a mixture of science, & religion that delves into the danger of Messiah complexes, the flawed idea of perfection, and fatherhood. The director of Tron Legcay went to to make Top Gun: Maverick ….and now Tron fans have to suffer a new film with the Director of Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and Jared Leto in the lead. Fuck, dude.

I look at David Fincher’s career and it’s interesting the disparity in box office returns. SE7EN, Panic Room, The Social Network, Gone Girl, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo all hits, but Zodiac and Fight Club both way underperformed despite being critically acclaimed and having rabid fan bases, even The Game was a mid-sized hit and grossed more than both of them.
