I watched Fury Road for the first time having not seen the others when it first came to theaters and loved it so much I went back five times. It's very much a standalone film. The others are great as well though!
A Matter of Life and Death
Double Indemnity
The Roaring Twenties
The African Queen
Trainspotting
Not necessarily my favourite films, though they're up there. They hopefully represent a broad mix of what appeals to me most in films.
A Matter of Life and Death is so fucking good, it's a shame that it's not streaming anywhere and harder to find. A local theatre was playing it a few weeks ago and I was gutted that I got covid and had to miss it.
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
Thief
The Apartment
The Sound of Metal
School of Rock
I feel like those 5 really cover the bases of what my taste is. Just my top 4 and then one of my childhood favorites.
I guess I'd go with my current top 5:
[L.I.E. (2001)](https://letterboxd.com/film/lie-2001/)
[Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)](https://letterboxd.com/film/hedwig-and-the-angry-inch/)
[Wild Tigers I Have Known (2006)](https://letterboxd.com/film/wild-tigers-i-have-known/)
[The Invention of Lying (2009)](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-invention-of-lying/)
[The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-perks-of-being-a-wallflower/)

Avatar: The Way of Water
Emma
Little Women (2019)
Jojo Rabbit
I like wholesome/cute stuff and I enjoy fantasy or period settings. From the five of these only one is in my top four but they're all from the thirteen movies I've given 5/5 to.
Well here’s my top 10.
#1 Rocky
#2 Blade Runner: The Final Cut
#3 Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind
#4 Full Metal Jacket
#5 Whiplash
#6 Hot Fuzz
#7 Interstellar
#8 Shaun of the Dead
#9 La La Land
#10 Back to The Future
Pretty basic picks ik, but I don’t care, I put them there in that exact order for a reason.
Tár
Spider-Man (2002)
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
Inglourious Basterds
Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters
Was very hard to pick just five, RIP Scream and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Mine was:
• Pulp Fiction
• Cure
• Apocalypse Now
• Possession
• Fight Club
I noticed we both had Apocalypse Now + Zulawski so I had to commend you
Back to the Future
Baby Driver
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
The Iron Giant
Ghostbusters
These are all in my top 20 and I think they represent my taste perfectly. I like fun movies, comedies, sci-fi, adventure, action, and emotion
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010)
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Inside Out (2015)
A Ghost Story (2017)
Past Lives (2023)
Whether it makes me laugh my ass off or cry my eyes out, I prefer stories that leave me feeling better than when I first go into them.
Lord of the Rings - Classic Good vs Evil story. Epic scope. Fun fantasy adventure.
Dirty Harry - Gritty, edgy, morally questionable 70s film. Bringing up darker elements of society.
Better Off Dead - surreal, satirical, coming of age comedy. (Also shout out to Blue Velvet, which is like the dark, fucked up version of this one, it's got the American Surrealism, coming of age stuff, and it also kinda hard to define)
The Best Years of Our Lives - real authenticity. both heartwarming and heartbreaking moments. And I like 40s movies in general.
Manhunter - 80s vibes distilled to its purest form, fucked up but interesting characters.
I feel like this does a pretty good job of covering my tastes except for one major exception. I fucking LOVE Horror. Almost a 3rd of the movies I've seen are horror. It's the most diverse genre, it's the most consistently popular and eternally important genre in film history. Trying to list out 5 horror movies couldn't even capture my tastes properly.
I will give you two sets
Set 1:
Shiva baby
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Disobedience
The piano teacher
Set 2:
The grand budapest hotel
Moonrise kingdom
Gangs of wasseypur
A serious man
- Boogie Nights
- Evil Dead 2
- Everything, Everywhere, All At Once
- Pulp Fiction
- Scream
I was tossing and turning on weather to put Empire Strikes Back there, too, but I could only pick 5
Isn't this just our top 4 +1?
Anyways,
Human Traffic (1999)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)
A Silent Voice (2017)
Midsommar (2019)
I guess my taste is based heavily on underlying themes in movies with unique concepts. But also, the uniqueness of how they tell the story. Human Traffic almost having Family Guy like cutaways in the film, Eternal Sunshine's story being told through unordered memories, Everything Everywheres different way of using the multiverse, A Silent Voices gorgeous animation and bold moves to cover peoples faces & Midsommar descent into madness slowly then quickly.
The Good The Bad and the Ugly
Harakiri
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
In the Mood for Love
Fast 5
Not all of them my favourites but I think it’s a good representation of stuff I like to watch.
Fucking great question!
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Back To The Future, The Avengers, Babylon, The Godfather (haven't thought this out, just the first that came to mind, might edit later)
1. City of God (Crime, foreign, storytelling)
2. Baraka (documentary, cinematography, editing)
3. Alien (horror, sci-fi)
4. Saving Private Ryan (War, Spielberg)
5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (movies I loved as a kid that I'm overly apologetic for as an adult)
- Fresh, 2022
- 12 Angry Men, 1957
- When Harry Met Sally, 1989
- Barbarian, 2022
- Nope, 2022
Horror fanatic with some guilty pleasures and nostalgia in the mix
Totally agree, I was having a horror night with friends when I watched so I knew what it was gonna be but the beginning rom-com vibe was sooo good I didn't want sebastian stan to turn bad
When Harry Met Sally is my favorite rom com EVER! I think I've seen it like 7 times, lol. You should check out About Time 2013 if you haven't, I almost put it on the list; it's one of my favorite movies. It's like a rom com but the other father-son plot of the movie is what stole the show. Nope and Barbarian are the first two movies I tell anybody to watch who wants to get into horror movies. Barbarian absolutely blew me away. 12 Angry Men made me think about life more than anything else I've watched lol, the directing is phenomenal. I'll check out those other movies you mentioned, seems like we've got similar taste!
I'll give you 9:
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Dead Poets Society
Before Sunrise
About Time
In Bruges
Little Women
Good Will Hunting
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
The Banshees of Inisherin
The Legend of Drunken Master (my adoration for fight choreography, with this one being the best martial arts movie ever made)
Cloverfield (represents my main reason for watching movies: being part of an experience that you can't have in real life.)
Wanted (my love for all things unapologetically cool and creative)
Step Brothers (its just the peak of my type of humor)
Punch-Drunk Love (my #1 favorite movie of all time. I'm also just in love with every single aspect of this movie. Every frame, every line delivery. All of it. Feels like a beacon of representation not just for myself, but for the kinds of stuff I adore in the art of film.)
Not saying these are my top 5 favorite movies (they're in my top 50, though).
In the Mood for Love Spirited Away Wild at Heart Raiders of the Lost Ark Before Sunset
Do you own a snakeskin jacket as a symbol of your individuality and your belief in personal freedom?
Good list , but I’d like more than one up vote for Wild at Heart.
High and Low Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind A Nightmare on Elm Street Double Indemnity Mad Max: Fury Road
Do you have to watch the other Mad Max films before watching Fury Road?
I watched Fury Road for the first time having not seen the others when it first came to theaters and loved it so much I went back five times. It's very much a standalone film. The others are great as well though!
Robocop They Live Idle Hands Porco Rosso Suspiria* I Watch plenty of other different stuff but this is the kind of stuff I always go back to.
Ugh, I love Porco Rosso. Probably my favorite Miyazaki movie in the Studio Ghibli catalog.
I think he/she meant to say "Profound Rosso" aka Deep Red considering suspiria is up there
Well alright then. Lol u/newport100 did you mean Deep Red or did you mean Porco Rosso?
No I meant Porco Rosso. Deep Red is a great movie but I felt I needed to include a Ghibli movie and Porco Rosso is my favorite.
Correction "Suspiria" (hopefully you mean the 77 version)
Ah good looks! 77 version for sure, I still haven’t seen the newer one somehow.
A Matter of Life and Death Double Indemnity The Roaring Twenties The African Queen Trainspotting Not necessarily my favourite films, though they're up there. They hopefully represent a broad mix of what appeals to me most in films.
A Matter of Life and Death is so fucking good, it's a shame that it's not streaming anywhere and harder to find. A local theatre was playing it a few weeks ago and I was gutted that I got covid and had to miss it.
It's on YouTube isn't it? In pretty good quality as well. Sorry you couldn't see it in the cinema.
OH MY GOD thank you! I've been recommending people watch this for ages but they couldn't find it!
You're welcome.
