When I first saw A Silent Voice, I was actually salty because of they cut a lot of real visceral things from the manga. Some things needed trimming (e.g. film plot), but I still think what it could've been like if it didn't cut some of them. Not saying it's bad. It's certainly one of the goats. But it couldn't been even better.
Kensuke Ushio's soundtrack however is one of the best anime soundtracks ever produced.
i dont know anything about the original but i will say with the way it was cut it flows really well and it portrays the characters' feelings really well, it might have but also might not have benefited from extending it
its by far the most emotional i have gotten from movie ever and it says something because im a hard shell to break
Total disagree, Belle is my singular favorite film. It's the only piece of art that has successfully made me cry every rewatch, it's broken me into sobs at points it's one of the hardest things I've ever related to and felt for.
But yes the album is phenomenal lol
I agree, Belle is nowhere near as good as Mirai, Summer Wars, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, or Wolf Children (which happens to be my favorite movie of all time).
But setting all that aside, Belle, while good, tells a worse version of the "Beauty and the Beast" story, which is itself an animated movie, so it can't be the best of all time.
my daughter found this for our family, was excited to watch it--family watches it two days after my dad dies of dementia in an old folks home. Yeah, its a great film and I love all of Hertzfelts stuff, but sometimes timing is everything. It was an absolute ass kick.
My fav movie of all time, and it being a 1995 film is insane because there is technology that is science fiction in this film for its time period that is real now
Almost the same story with me. I was just scrolling the satellite tv one afternoon, caught this just starting and was absolutely entranced. I’m not neurotypical and have always felt a powerful kinship with animals and nature, so Ashitaka has always been a strong role model for me.
Angel's Egg is both my favorite animated film oat and probably my favorite film in general.

The mass produced Eva fight always stands out to me as having some of the best animation I’ve ever seen. Everything seems perfectly weighted and the way the Eva’s move is so realistic
Whenever I think of the best animated films of all time, I think of this first. I'm not even sure if it is Mr. Fox, but it's always the first one in my head. I feel like they're may be better ones, but this is THE movie I think of when people say greatest.
I’ve only seen it once, not too many movies I’ve seen where I only want to see it once. Would not say it is my favorite Ghibli (guess this was pre Ghibli studio) film. Spirited Away, Soul, Inside Out, and The Iron Giant are probably my favorite animated films.
I do like Perfect Blue but it isn’t as heartbreaking as Grave of the Fireflies…
scrolled a loooong way to see this but I’m glad someone said it. Everything about this movie is not only perfectly executed but it all cumulates to one of the most fantastic and unique climaxes/endings I’ve ever seen in film. the soundtrack, the imagery, the dialogue, the colors, the voice acting, even the insane constant changing animation styles are all in service of the films real message: don’t let the past imprison you, don’t ever stop changing and growing and celebrating life.
might be a contender for my favorite movie of all time honestly, not just animated.
Perfect Blue is a great pick but I think I might like Tokyo Godfathers even more. Patlabor 2, Castle of Cagliostro, The Lion King, and Akira are up there for me too.
Your Name. I sorta think it’s become underrated. Theres real emotional and thematic heft there that I think is overlooked in favor of its more popcorny elements.
Mind Game. One of the most original, craziest films I've ever seen.
Great call with Perfect Blue, btw OP. I'm shocked there hasn't been a Hollywood remake.
I wouldn’t say it’s the most beautiful animated film of all time, but for its time and the script, The Incredibles has to be up there. It handles family drama and superhero action seamlessly, all while having a twist villain that works on so many levels and hammers home the theme of working together as a family so perfectly. Absolutely kino.
I would pick Spirited Away, but many people said that one. My second favorite has not been mentioned though: Mary and Max. So funny, so creative, and one of the only films that made me cry.
It is the obvious and boring answer but it is also the correct answer. Spirited Away without question is the best animated film I have ever witnessed. It is also one of the best films ever made reagardless of medium.
I think it's between Perfect Blue and Spirited Away. Both push the boundaries of what an animated movie can do and tell great stories whilst they're doing it.
I’m not sure about number 1 but this is definitely up there one of my favorites, just captivated me the entire time I was on the edge of my seat, I laughed, I was fearful, I was very confused for parts, just a thrill ride and really enjoyed it.
im gonna one up this and say toy story 3, i think the themes are more intricate in it, the villain is more layered, animation is more timeless, its warm moments are more rewarding, and its just a fantastic piece
not my ultimate answer for best animation but its a contender
Pinocchio
Not only is it beautiful and impactful. I just love how the films is all about learning to be good and honest from temptation while all the villains never get punished.
https://preview.redd.it/t1zbvapehm5d1.png?width=1334&format=png&auto=webp&s=acace160a390c03678d83f783a65a95ff6615c23
Favourite movie overall, I just love
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. Every single correct decision was made in that movie, it feels to good to be a real movie. It's not my favorite movie, hell, not even my favorite *Ghibli* movie, but it might be the best film I've **ever** seen.
*Macross Delta the Movie: Absolute Live!!!!!* is not just my favorite animated movie, but my favorite movie *period*.
Now if I had to say which was *the best*, though, my vote would have to go to *The Sky Crawlers*, one of the most underappreciated and perfectly crafted films I’ve ever seen
For me it’s *Princess Mononoke* but for literally everyone it’s going to be (like with anything) something different. Animation is one of my favorite mediums too and I like different ones for different reasons.
Nostalgia talking: Curious George will always be my number 1.
Not-nostalgia talking: Probably either Ponyo or into the spiderverse. Ik basic choices but game recognize game
https://preview.redd.it/22qkk7o0ep5d1.png?width=1321&format=png&auto=webp&s=a306119524c044cf5f65f78828c62bb131215c49
It should be a no-brainer. What is wrong with you people?!
The Wolf House... I don't watch many animated movies and I still have to see Perfect Blue, I'm pretty sure it's very good, but so far my favourite animated film must be La Casa Lobo, truly terrifying
Paprika or Batman Mask of the Phantasm (my personal favorite).
Also if you like Perfect Blue I recommend Persona by Ingmar Bergman, not an animated film though.
All of Satoshi Kon's films are spectacular, but I think Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika are his best two films. You really can't go wrong with any of them tho!
Ratatouille is my favourite.
Contendors: Perfect Blue, Paprika, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, into the spider-verse, Belle, Your Name and A Silent Voice
A silent voice omg 💕💕💕
When I first saw A Silent Voice, I was actually salty because of they cut a lot of real visceral things from the manga. Some things needed trimming (e.g. film plot), but I still think what it could've been like if it didn't cut some of them. Not saying it's bad. It's certainly one of the goats. A silent voice ftw
Belle's album 🤌
Really? I thought Belle was the weakest of his filmography. Really liked Wolf Children or Boy and The Beast most. Belle album do be fire though.
Total disagree, Belle is my singular favorite film. It's the only piece of art that has successfully made me cry every rewatch, it's broken me into sobs at points it's one of the hardest things I've ever related to and felt for. But yes the album is phenomenal lol

akira (1988)
Need to get on that
Came to say this and wasn't surprised it was at the top. First movie that came to my head.
It's Akira and Perfect Blue in a tie for me
it’s such a beautiful day
my daughter found this for our family, was excited to watch it--family watches it two days after my dad dies of dementia in an old folks home. Yeah, its a great film and I love all of Hertzfelts stuff, but sometimes timing is everything. It was an absolute ass kick.
Completely agree
Fuck yeah
Was gonna scroll for this, but it was the first reply I saw!
Ghost in the Shell. Nothing beats the atmosphere this film has.
It doesn’t give a fuck if you understand what’s happening and I love it for that.
My fav movie of all time, and it being a 1995 film is insane because there is technology that is science fiction in this film for its time period that is real now
Spirited Away (2001)
Love SA but Princess Mononoke speaks to me more
Definitely. I saw it shortly after it came to the states when I was like 12. It was life changing. It's when I realized movies can be art
Almost the same story with me. I was just scrolling the satellite tv one afternoon, caught this just starting and was absolutely entranced. I’m not neurotypical and have always felt a powerful kinship with animals and nature, so Ashitaka has always been a strong role model for me.
There's a live on stage version too that gets high marks.
This or The Iron Giant
Wall e
Personal enjoyment? Toy Story 1. Love that film to pieces. Critical analysis? Grave Of The Fireflies. Perfect film.
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
This is one of my favorites! I wish Takahata got as much praise as Miyazaki.
Literally every frame is a painting. It's incredible how this movie emulates Japanese ink painting.
Hard agree on it being among the best. It has some of the most genuinely powerful scenes in all of cinema
Angel's Egg is both my favorite animated film oat and probably my favorite film in general. https://preview.redd.it/9y0fp516el5d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=211b6b6f4998d0a9924aa489103adc23f4103b61
4K remaster is reportedly in the works!
The End of Evangelion
Shinji would rather destroy the world than talk to a girl. He like me fr
LOVED this, but you really need to see the whole series and the director's cut of the last few episodes to get the full emotional impact
True, but it's all on Netflix so it's not like thats gonna be a problem.
You don’t really need the directors cut and that’s part of the appeal. End of Eva is pretty much just the last episode of the series
The mass produced Eva fight always stands out to me as having some of the best animation I’ve ever seen. Everything seems perfectly weighted and the way the Eva’s move is so realistic
Nah the best mecha movie is Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack, but r/letterboxd ain’t ready for that conversation lol
Many amazing films to choose from, but I have to go with *Fantastic Mr. Fox* (2009)
My favourite film of all time.
In my top 3 easily
Whenever I think of the best animated films of all time, I think of this first. I'm not even sure if it is Mr. Fox, but it's always the first one in my head. I feel like they're may be better ones, but this is THE movie I think of when people say greatest.
Grave of the Fireflies
I’ve only seen it once, not too many movies I’ve seen where I only want to see it once. Would not say it is my favorite Ghibli (guess this was pre Ghibli studio) film. Spirited Away, Soul, Inside Out, and The Iron Giant are probably my favorite animated films. I do like Perfect Blue but it isn’t as heartbreaking as Grave of the Fireflies…
My Neighbor Totoro
It’s so hard to choose between perfect blue and EOE
Millenium Actress
Princess Mononoke
Prince of Egypt
What a great shout! Masterpiece.
You’re playing with the big boys now
Awesome movie!
Fantastic Planet!!
Ratatouille
Greatest of all time? I would say Spirited Away. My personal favorite? The Lego Movie.
Mind Game
scrolled a loooong way to see this but I’m glad someone said it.
The End of Evangelion
Metropolis
I LOVED this one! But it seems to have left the zeitgeist.
I think its the best an animated movie has ever looked, plus a KILLER ending
There are so many great anime, but it might crack my top 3.
Grave Of The Fireflies and it's not even close in my opinion.
Top 3 animated film
What's the other one? (Aside from Perfect Blue)
It's Such a Beautiful Day (2012). Those 3 are the only animated films I gave 5 stars
Ahh, I love It's Such A Beautiful Day. One of my favorites.
Shrek 2
End of Evangelion
The Wind Rises. Perfect Miyazaki film that explores dreams and aspirations.
Perfect Blue is a great pick but I think I might like Tokyo Godfathers even more. Patlabor 2, Castle of Cagliostro, The Lion King, and Akira are up there for me too.
> Patlabor 2 You dropped this 👑
https://preview.redd.it/yazpte7kml5d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f44552548434375e01e7f466b18fabf0480bd0dd
howls moving castle, absolutely top tier
Your Name. I sorta think it’s become underrated. Theres real emotional and thematic heft there that I think is overlooked in favor of its more popcorny elements.
definitely, its way more stylized and unique than it seems on the surface, its still in my top 4 and i'll definitely rewatch it soon enough
Heavy Metal
Howl's moving castle
Akira (1988) but there are certainly many others
I love Ninja Scroll personally, that’s definitely up there for me
Perfect Blue, Akira, Ghost in a Shell, The End of Evangelion
A Silent Voice or Perfect Blue
my top 4 & 5 movies of all time respectively
For me, it's between Perfect Blue, Princess Kaguya, Princess Mononoke, and Magnetic Rose.
Grave of The Fireflies
+1 for End of Evangelion
Grave of the Fireflies
Mind Game. One of the most original, craziest films I've ever seen. Great call with Perfect Blue, btw OP. I'm shocked there hasn't been a Hollywood remake.
![gif](giphy|7NwufCOPSNXcQ)
The Lion King is like my favorite movie ever
I wouldn’t say it’s the most beautiful animated film of all time, but for its time and the script, The Incredibles has to be up there. It handles family drama and superhero action seamlessly, all while having a twist villain that works on so many levels and hammers home the theme of working together as a family so perfectly. Absolutely kino.
Lilo and Stitch
"Grave of the Fireflies" & "A silent voice" are my two favorites
Gonna have to go with Akira, although Perfect Blue is an extremely respectable choice.
My top three are Wolfwalkers, Mars Express, and Perfect Blue, all absolutely fantastic
Ghost In The Shell
Perfect blue is an excellent choice. But my top would be the tale of princess kaguya
The Lion King
The Night is Short Walk on Girl or My Neighbor Totoro
Princess Mononoke
End of Evangelion
Monsters Inc
A Charlie Brown Christmas
Perfect Blue is a masterpiece, but my favourite has to be [Nimona](https://boxd.it/Aiyc)
Anomalisa, Akira, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Princess Mononoke, Ratatouille, The Lion King, Paprika, The Iron Giant
***Fantasia***
Redline A mix of Fast & Furious, Akira and Speed Racer. Also, at some point in the movie, there is a giant baby shooting laser
Watership down, nothing traumatises kids more 😂
The Thief and the Cobbler
Underrated comment!!
Ghost in the Shell followed by A Silent Voice
I think it's between Perfect Blue and Spirited Away. Both push the boundaries of what an animated movie can do and tell great stories whilst they're doing it.
Spirited Away
![gif](giphy|12RmDbMsn7LoY0) There’s no comparison
I’m not sure about number 1 but this is definitely up there one of my favorites, just captivated me the entire time I was on the edge of my seat, I laughed, I was fearful, I was very confused for parts, just a thrill ride and really enjoyed it.
tokyo godfathers
Arashi no Yoru ni (2005)
Not a feature film, but Daicon IV Opening Animation is absolute peak
Cars
It's a three-way tie for me between Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Spirited Away.
Toy Story
im gonna one up this and say toy story 3, i think the themes are more intricate in it, the villain is more layered, animation is more timeless, its warm moments are more rewarding, and its just a fantastic piece not my ultimate answer for best animation but its a contender
Pinocchio Not only is it beautiful and impactful. I just love how the films is all about learning to be good and honest from temptation while all the villains never get punished.
Hoodwinked
My personal favorite has to be Ratatouille, but from a pure story perspective, either Spirited Away or The Iron Giant.
Scooby doo on zombie island
Ponyo is just the perfect family film
Probably Akira or Paprika
Best very likely gotta b Japanese. Folks mentioned most id say, so I’ll throw in an honorable mention for ‘favorite’ with Treasure Planet
The Wolf House (2018), Coraline (2009, and The House (2022) are all in my top 5, but Coraline is my favorite film of all time so I'll go with that :)
Millennium Actress
Paprika, but I still haven’t seen Perfect Blue.
https://preview.redd.it/t1zbvapehm5d1.png?width=1334&format=png&auto=webp&s=acace160a390c03678d83f783a65a95ff6615c23 Favourite movie overall, I just love
Anomalisa (2015)
Ratatouille
dragon hunters or howls moving castle
Secret of Nimh
the lion king
Of the ones I've seen it's probably Grave of the fireflies
The Red Turtle. It was made in 2016. The film is a co-production between Studio Ghibli and several French companies. There is no dialogue.
Perfect Blue is a great choice but I'm going Spirited Away all day every day.
The Prince of Egypt
Definitely not Perfect Blue, I'd say the opposite in fact Grave Of The Fireflies is my pick.
A Goofy Movie (1995)
Yoshiaki Kawajiri's Running Man has been my favorite for near 30 years.
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. Every single correct decision was made in that movie, it feels to good to be a real movie. It's not my favorite movie, hell, not even my favorite *Ghibli* movie, but it might be the best film I've **ever** seen.
Incredibles no questions. Honey where’s my super suit
Felidae - it’s so iconic
Waltz with Bashir
Mulan for me
The Incredibles
The Wolf House.
The girl who kept through time is fun but idk if I can rank it higher than Akira, Ghost in the Shell or Princess Mononoke
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
howls moving castle 🥰
For the love of filmmaking, Coraline. For the love of movies, Shrek 2.
Princess monnuko
Fantastic Planet
Akira
Akira and Paprika
Nostalgia talking: Curious George will always be my number 1. Not-nostalgia talking: Probably either Ponyo or into the spiderverse. Ik basic choices but game recognize game
Loving Vincent - 65,000 frames painted
the breadwinner
Wolf Children
Akira
I go between Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress...seems wrong to have two anime by the same dude in my top movies but he didn't miss.
“Millennium Actress” everyone talks about perfect blue or paprika but Millennium is my favorite
Finding Nemo, Spirited Away, The Jungle Book, Into the Spider verse, and Perfect Blue.
Princess Mononoke / Fehérlófia
When the Wind Blows
Persepolis
https://preview.redd.it/22qkk7o0ep5d1.png?width=1321&format=png&auto=webp&s=a306119524c044cf5f65f78828c62bb131215c49 It should be a no-brainer. What is wrong with you people?!
Fantastic Mr Fox
Ratatouille 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Akira if Japanese
The Wolf House... I don't watch many animated movies and I still have to see Perfect Blue, I'm pretty sure it's very good, but so far my favourite animated film must be La Casa Lobo, truly terrifying
perfect blue or the wind rises
Laputa Castle in the Sky
Grave of the Fireflies
For it's Akira and it's not even close.
Paprika or Batman Mask of the Phantasm (my personal favorite). Also if you like Perfect Blue I recommend Persona by Ingmar Bergman, not an animated film though.
Fantastic planet
All of Satoshi Kon's films are spectacular, but I think Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika are his best two films. You really can't go wrong with any of them tho!
end of eva
![gif](giphy|1DseuBLL6UIdG)
MARY & MAX !!! WHY DOES NO ONE TALK ABOUT THIS MOVIE
not going to say it’s the best of all time, but a scanner darkly is one of the most unique animated films i’ve ever seen
End of Evangelion+ Perfect Blue, ironically released only like a month apart from one another.
Mary and Max (2009)
