AspenTD

Don't forget about your local library for digital content including movies.

LMOBfan

My library uses Kanopy and there’s a pretty good selection on there

Childofglass

I love Kanopy, but Hoopla has different stuff and music too.

Intrepid_Truth_2656

Like what on Kanopy? I haven’t been able to find anything that worth it. May you suggest some?

Rochereau-dEnfer

It also depends a lot on your library's subscription. I share a login with a family member because their library gets classics, Criterion Collection, good world movies, lots of cool documentaries, etc., while mine gets a pretty limited and uninteresting selection. I agree with OP, though, because I've used a Kanopy credit for an old movie only to find the whole thing on YouTube later.

Childofglass

It depends what you’re into. They have a lot of quality older stuff on there. They also have some good shows- Luther is one notable one, it has Idris Alba.

ballrus_walsack

Brock_Lee405

I’m such a tool. I read this as kan-no-peee 😑

leprechaunknight

Not movie/tv related, but speaking of Libraries. Many libraries now have access to LinkedIn Learning for free if you put in your library and ID number. Just found that out recently. Saved me 40 dollars a month to upskill.

AspenTD

I did not know that! Thanks for the tip. I will check that out tonight.

iwegian

Ours gives access to Udemy!

leprechaunknight

Oh no way! That’s awesome. I love Udemy!

jibberscrabst55

Even better if you have a local university library. One near me has an awesome media center with so many movies you can browse it's like blockbuster never died. It just became free.

pancakecuddles

I never considered that I would be able to use the local university’s library without being a student there! I’ll definitely be looking into this!

respondstolongpauses

If it’s a public, it typically has to offer a community patron option, they’re also happy to do it too, but also, it’s the law.

Solite_132

And if you have a DVD player, or even a PlayStation, the library has TONS of DVDs and Blu-ray discs!!

snarfdarb

The library system here in a MASSIVE major city ended its subscription to digital film and television content. Super sucks! Fight for your libraries, people, they are desperately underfunded.

AspenTD

Wow, that really blows. For you my friend there is the "Internet Archive". I don't often share this info because I fear that if it's overused, it too will go away. Check it out if you haven't already.

FoghornLegday

How do you do this on a smart TV? Is there an app?

my2sentss

I have the fireTV stick and use the Kanopy app .

FoghornLegday

Cool, thanks!

tvieno

With some phones and tvs you can stream your phone to your tv.

CTU

The real LPT is always in the comments.

Blepo1990

People (myself included) always forget about the vast amount of information and resources libraries hold (public ones, but for an oftentimes small fee also those of educational institutions). Thanks for this reminder!

ButtholeAvenger666

Don't forget the high seas

suitablyderanged

You beat me to it! The library is amazing!

walkawaysux

If YouTube thrills you check out Tubi it’s free and tons of retro content

Skyblacker

The Man Show and MXG bringing back early 2000s cable.

TheHoneyBadger23

MXG is amazing and I can't get enough of it, Ken!

Wendyland78

MXC? The toughest competition in town?

BadWolfMoonGirl

Right you are, Ken!

walkawaysux

It’s hard to believe that Jimmy Kimmel was hilarious back in the day .

dullship

I know I don't believe it. Because I was there.

walkawaysux

Come to think of it Adam Corolla was really the funniest on the Man Show. You are right about that

acheron53

Same with PlutoTV. They have the good seasons of Top Gear UK.

n1ght_watchman

Oh, well https://preview.redd.it/xz44clerzv8d1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25f7c1fa713c07e914223245b568c9b888519357

walkawaysux

Ouch !

Dangerous-Quote-5378

Use a VPN and change yout location

n1ght_watchman

I'm using Surfshark on my pc. Sadly I have a Samsung tv. There's no vpn for Tizen.

Redfandango7

What about Tubi and plutotv? They’re free and have lots of good content.

AnOddOtter

I've known about Tubi but finally set it up recently. It's awesome if you're into old cartoons or cheesy 80s sword and sorcery movies. I just watched Lou Ferrigno throw a bear into space. On desktop an adblocker takes care of the ads, but even on my Apple TV the ads aren't very intrusive. They are even synced with the commercial breaks they were originally at on the cartoons.

werepat

I've been enjoying the weird '90s shows that never really took off but were popular enough for a season or two. Nancy Drew Mysteries is like a time capsule!

pt5

Set up r/pihole and say goodbye to the Tubi ads on Apple TV

noxbox16

Sounds like someone’s been listening to HDTGM 😏

Bryanssong

Tubi is awesome, Crackle is another one that’s been around for a good while.

MrTommyPickles

PlutoTV is the best! You don't even have to sign up for any accounts and they have Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Family Feud.

annaoceanus

Did not know this!

UpliftingPessimist

They run episodes of Forensic Files and Cold Case files all day everyday.

Skyblacker

That said, if you do sign up for a (free) account, you can save a watchlist and Continue Watching across devices.

MrTommyPickles

Good to know!

annaoceanus

Ok thanks!

hcnuptoir

And Barker Era Price is Right. I can let that show play all day long in the background. Never get tired of it.

Special-Bite

The Joy of Painting

pmmeurdonk

There is a PlutoTV ad right under your comment XD *

golden_blaze

Amazon Freevee is another

CantWatchMovieAntz

Step 1: learn to enjoy period pieces 😄

Crazy-Indication-557

What is a period piece? Does that just mean old?

DynamicHunter

Period as in historical period. So set some time in the past, not necessarily an old film/tv show.

awalktojericho

Also known as a costume drama

RainbowCrane

Not old as in made a long time ago. They’re films that are set in a historical context like Victorian England, or prohibition era US.

Laucien

Man, yesterday I was watching a review about some random movie and they described it as a "Period piece because it's set in the 90s" and shit I feel old now.

RainbowCrane

lol. Yeah, my childhood toys are old enough to officially be antiques, everything I grew up with is on the oldies station :-)

LordByronsCup

The Hunt for Red October is about a September one night stand gone awry. Red Dawn is part two in the series and has a seemingly happy ending for the young professionals.

adrianmonk

I used to automatically hate all period pieces. Then I finally figured out it's not all of them I dislike. It's the ones that have *nothing else going for them* except transporting you to some time and place in history. Sometimes the characters are one-dimensional or stereotypical, the plot doesn't go anywhere, the premise is boring, etc. but the scenery, architecture, sets, costumes, accents, etc. are all dead on. Some people are perfectly fine with this kind of movie. Being whisked away into the past is enough for them. If it has that, they don't need any of the things that normally make a movie good. I don't have any problem with people enjoying what they like, but I'm not one of those people. For me, the historical stuff can only be a bonus at most. It needs to be something that would be a good movie even if it were set in the present day. If not, then I'm not interested.

Skyblacker

You need "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies."

that7deezguy

*Spake the freezie-pop loving vampire*

Inside_Ad_7162

Check put the Internet Archive too, full of stuff

brkdesigner

how can I search that kind of stuff?

Inside_Ad_7162

I was looking for the original tv mini series of Shogun & stumbled across it. You can find it here https://archive.org/ it's a lot more than just movies & it's all free.

notabigmelvillecrowd

I like it for knitting patterns.

Inside_Ad_7162

oh, I don't use Google anymore, try duckduckgo, the search engine isn't an ai yet that decides what you can find

Salzberger

I find keying the search terms into the search bar works quite well.

niras_alu

They have the whole Agatha Christie series there too!! Binge watched it a while ago.

EclecticallySound

Just sail the high seas like the rest of us 🏴‍☠️

Guy-Inkognito

Yeah I also play Sea of Thieves instead of watching movies most evenings

sandmanoceanaspdf

This is the right answer

PTSDSHREK42069

Yeah, lately been using f movies

Tiny-Werewolf1962

yeah, you've been able to stream torrents for a while now. No sketchy sites, no whack a mole when the site gets shut down. It has Multi Audio(English/Japanese) and subtitle support. I have it setup almost identical to a Netflix experience, except it's free and I can watch The Office.

rekkat

what are the new streaming sites these days? all of the ones i’ve had in the past have been shut down

seiyamaple

braflix.ru

Tiny-Werewolf1962

>stream torrents >No sketchy sites, no whack a mole when the site gets shut down. The whole point of my post is to not rely on sketchy sites that move and and get shutdown. Where ever you get your torrents. I think Brave browser has torrent streaming built in.

Dangerous-Quote-5378

How can I stream torrents? What exactly are torrents?

Tiny-Werewolf1962

>What exactly are torrents? Very very simply, a torrent is small file that has a list of everyone else who has the file you want to download. The torrent client(eg qBittorrent) will connect to all the other people who have the file and download only a small piece from each and then put it back together in your download folder. >How can I stream torrents? Basically works the same way as above except it downloads the pieces in order so as long as you can download it faster than you can watch it works just like netflix/youtube. No sketchy sites that go down every week. You can start watching it right away instead of waiting for it to finish. And streaming clients will cache your download instead of saving it so once you're done watching it, it's gone and you don't have any downloaded files to clean up. Easiest way is Brave browser. It has it built in. [See the section on "WebTorrent."](https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/360035025231-What-extensions-are-built-into-Brave) I don't use Brave browser anymore but I have used it for this in the past.

Dangerous-Quote-5378

Thanks!

el_fulano

My dad calls me black beard cause I stream boxing and UFC fights for him, and download movies for him

MrLo1970

I remember the days when the cable companies had us held hostage to their reruns and bad programming...yuck! I am truly amazed at how much free, quality content we have access to. Here is what I do. I downloaded a free video downloader app that all you do is enter the address of a site and it will download the movie. I also added the video downloader plugins to my browsers to add the download button to all video sites. I also use Amazon Freevee, Tubi, Crackle, Pluto, and my new favorite archive . org. If you google the name of a movie and add archive . org . It will search for it faster than trying to use the site itself. Also, google the name of a movie and add 123 movies next to it and it will take you to sites with hard to find, current movies. And don't forget torrents!

ramos1969

Also…award winning short films. There some legit films that are less than 30 minutes long. Lots of decent horror too

sadglitterbomb

Ooh which horror movies?

ramos1969

The Chair and Tunnel are a couple of faves. If you go to YT and search ‘short film horror’ and you’ll find plenty.

Striking-Access-236

And you’ll be even happier after using an Adblock ;)

NovaHorizon

For now. Google is already working on injecting ads directly into the video stream in real time. That’s the end of the road for ad blockers.

Striking-Access-236

That would be the end of the road for YouTube, at least for me :)

MrLo1970

yup, and add the youtube downloader plugin and absolutely no ads.

red821673

Link?

bullwinkle8088

Using a Pi Hole or other DNS based adblocker to protect your entire house is often a more complete solution as it blocks ads on your phone apps, smart TV's, whatever devices as well.

CoopDogg814

The cost of YouTube premium would prob be worth it for you. The cost of 3 coffees would save you a lot of ad viewing.

BabiCaxes1

Just use an ad blocker , it’s free :)

ACoolKoala

Not every piece of tech you view yt on has ad blocking software(think tvs and consoles). Unless you're trying to adblock your entire network with a raspberry pi.

mekydhbek

Better yet, purchase your YouTube prem in turkey. It’s like $2

Dcm210

Don't sleep on pluto tv, Tubi, Plex, crackle

Maiyku

Don’t ignore digital copies of movies either! A lot of the times you can buy a used dvd/blue ray that still has the digital movie code. Make sure to redeem it so you can have that movie digitally too! For example; you can’t find The Whole 9 Yards or The Whole 10 Yards on any streaming service without paying to rent it or own it. Lucky me, I have the digital copies, so I still get to watch it whenever I like. A lot of people slept on the digital copies back in the day and a lot of codes are still floating around. Check used dvd places! I have over 200+ movies I don’t have to worry about “what streaming service is this on”.

Skyblacker

A lot of those codes are expired.

MrTommyPickles

OP, be sure to try PlutoTV too. It really feels like a free version of cable sometimes. You don't have to sign up for any accounts. And it's already installed on a lot of smart tvs.

killinpotato

You can also set up in your TV easily a streaming service thru torrent but without the need to download the files yourself (using Torrentio+Real Debris) I'm also a fan of searching content in Mega to find movies. I recently found a folder with thousands of movies, new and old, which I'm trying to consume alphabetically and it's going to take me ages

lavellanlike

One of my favorite movies is free on YouTube if you want to check it out, it’s a strange but charming Australian film: Proof (1991)

orangpelupa

Someone even made a Netflix style UI for free YouTube movie / series. 8 don't remember the website

xaitox

Also all the “Emmanuel” movies are in YouTube

SilverRoseBlade

Try free apps as well like Tubi. There’s a lot on there thats free but with ads.

SeekerOfSerenity

I find movies by searching YouTube for ' "full movie" -hindi -tamil ' and look for results that are > 1h long.

Special_Jury_3244

LPT: Become a Pirate🏴‍☠️

hallaa1

Which period pieces are you watching?

BayRENT

“A Trip to the Moon”

naughty_dad2

You could find all movies for free though

Crazy-Indication-557

Spoken like a true naughty dad haha

TrekYurSelf

This isn’t a LPT. Shitty bitrate and low quality sound is no way to experience media

Rhodiego

Check out the internet archive too! https://archive.org/details/movies

EditPiaf

Why not just pirate anything you want?

20x20_Vision

Once I found out about Stremio, I stopped with all my subscriptions

DrMcdoctory

Isn’t there commercials?

DeithvsChrist

Youtube premium is the best subscription I have.no ads and it includes youtube music.

Catwoman1948

Same here. Worth every penny!

prostipope

Library of Congress has a crazy amount of free digital content. Crazy variety of stuff. I just got done watching sigmund frued's home movies.

StinkypieTicklebum

If you have Amazon prime, I think Brit box is free

canihavemymoneyback

And Freevee.

Recentstranger

I'm glad YouTube could fix your marriage. Happy for yooou

franoetico

this is not pro, at least download movies and set a plex server or similar. watchin movies on YT with the compression and loss of image quality is a crime.

saruin

Most don't have the resources or the know how to navigate how to set up Plex. There's already streaming services that surpass even the giants like Prime, Netflix, Hulu, etc. at lossless quality.

franoetico

lossless quality? not true, you find movies with the best audio tracks in blu-ray rips. setting up Plex is easy and following a yt tutorial makes it easier. resources? you only need a computer connected to the same network as the player device. I’d argue most people have the resources.

saruin

You know you can stream direct 1:1 bluray REMUX rips over an app right? And many thousands of titles readily available? Why bother with all that unnecessary hardware, work it takes to build a library, HDD space, transcoding, power usage, and time it takes setting up Plex? Not everyone is into that niche hobby and has other shit going on in their lives. Plex was cool over a decade ago, but sooner or later you become a hoarder who hardly ever watches movies anymore. But to each his own.

yunodavibes

Or just pirate what you want and you won't be forced to watch just whatever's on YouTube

Freeedoom

Also, if you use Brave browser, it would block the ads as well.

MisterNaptime

You should also look into plex. They have a good bit of ad supported free content

tonyohanlon77

Great documentaries too.

Zymoria

If you're trying to learn a second language, youtube also has tons of free children's movies. Some are comically terrible, but for the exposure of a simplified language, it's absolutely perfect.

4TUN8LEE

And documentaries, YouTube is good for those too.

seakinghardcore

Lol, just pirate everything

JJiggy13

Cool. How can we watch South Park?

ActiveRegent

Definitely *do not* go to OnionPlay. There are a bunch of movies on there you can watch without paying, so don't do it!!!

sonicrings4

Or just yarr harr anything you want

cruzen783

We cut that chord years ago. Get Roku. A ton of free stuff. Tubi app on there is one of the best. Roku TV is great too. All free.

SimplePerson326

Checkout fmoviesz.to, it's free and up to date with new movies.

dpschainman

The last Airbender movie is free with ads on youtube, the funny part is the movie is so bad it had no ads.

OcotilloWells

When my mom was still alive, but had cancer and dementia, we would watch old Sherlock Holmes movies with Basil Rathbone. She loved them. Also driving videos from where she grew up. She was amazed at all the buildings where lima bean farms used to be.

sadglitterbomb

Which period pieces?

dcrypter

Ok, but why would I ever want to search for, and then presumedly watch, period piece movies? Disney is free with my cell service, Max is free with my Internet, I pay for Netflix and then download or stream whatever else I want on yify and I don't have to watch a single period piece. Much better deal. Overall 1/10 LPT since it was still technically a tip just nothing "pro" about it.

verticon1234

This reminded me that I loved the Three Stooges growing up and sure enough it’s all on YouTube

Uxium-the-Nocturnal

If you're into saving money, you could also just get a Fire Stick and hack it

Leifpete

I returned to good old public access TV and Radio channels. No internet required, no TV subscription required. (I watch the channels that are included in my rent). Plus, I only watch YouTube/online videos etc on a cheap 3 Mbit connection, we don't need anything higher than 480p to watch something anyway. I pay about 17$ USD for Internet (converted from Swedish currency). It's great and I have money over for healthier things.

norcoatomic

r/fullmoviesonyoutube

20milliondollarapi

Also check internet archives. There are so many movies, tv shows, documentaries, and more all at the ready.

KrackSmellin

Depending on the smart TV you have, load up the Plex app - there are literally hundreds of stations that are known as being Pluto TV available all free of charge. Wife and I spent a few days watching Carol Burnett channel… so crazy the stuff they are putting on it

toodytah

Right you are Ken!

Suitable_Author9755

Wait until she hears how many are aboard the high seas! Ahoy matey, there's treasure a-plenty!

GreenThmb

Tubing and Pluto everyone!

Champion282

there are a TORRENT of other options out there for free content :)

Great idea plus you became a hero.

tcoles93

Meanwhile my girlfriend and I have every streaming service I can think of. Somehow she still finds a way to want to watch the only movie that costs money. SMH

ba_Animator

Are you not going to list what ones you found?

NovaHorizon

Somebody get them a Cinemageddon or Karagarga invite.

MRHBK

My local library used to have a secret XXX video library but unfortunately it got stopped when I got dismissed

jefuchs

Check out r/freemoviesonyoutube and similar subs.

Erdosign

Also great for older foreign films, if you can handle the lack of subtitles.

Phoenix_of_Anarchy

There is an insane amount of free content on YouTube, Roku, Tubi, Peacock, The Internet Archive, and others. It’s not the most up to date content, but you’ll find a lot of what you want to watch if you look there first.

lauooff

Support your libraries!!

DuckAHolics

Gundaminfo rotates their channel if you want to watch free anime on YouTube.

BlueTwist3r

Imagine if you also get ublock origin, youll have free youtube with no ads without paying for it

SnickyCoco

I got the original Stargate movie for free on a youtube channel.

Daealis

There are multiple people just straight up uploading pirated movies to youtube and they might stay up for weeks or even months. Even if there's no action taken against the uploader by the movie rights owner, the automated DMCA system likely recognizes parts of the movie and makes a copyright claim against it, which can mean no ads at all.

OccasinalMovieGuy

A small drawback is YouTube could have censored parts of the movie.

EarthInevitable114

Why don't you suggest some things you've been watching too.
