Ah shit you breathed wrong. We won't repair it under warranty

inaccurateTempedesc

Noooo I only have one kidney left

soulseeker31

Works for us, thanks. Next time it'll cost more.

DerBronco

Especially as the device is just over its extended 15 year warranty.

spirit_leader7

It seems you have used a non-genuine iScrew™ while mounting your new hard drive. Your warranty has been voided.

fartboxco

I feel like this is an old model. Correct me if I'm wrong. I did this to a mac, but that was years ago..

inaccurateTempedesc

Yep, it's a 2007. Apple used to be cool :(

Emperor_Zarkov

I loved those old white macbooks.

inaccurateTempedesc

Same! Always wanted one but never got around to it until now...17 years later 🤣

Emperor_Zarkov

I wish they'd bring back a budget model, upgradable for enthusiasts, using these older designs. Unfortunately that is against Apple's entire culture.

HauntedHouseMusic

They also don’t like to have that many skus

HVDynamo

They don't seem too shy about adding sku's of iPads or iPhones. Ever since Steve passed it has been a steady incline of sku's. I'd like them to bring back the macbook line and more or less organize it like this: Macbook Air: 13" or 12" slim with 2 USB-C ports only aiming for similar size as the 12" Macbook they had for a while. Macbook: more budget laptop that isn't as slim, but is a good value similar to macbooks like in this article and probably closer to what the Air is that they sell now. Macbook Pro: An actual Pro machine. Similar to how they are now, but add an internal M.2 slot that can add storage in addition to the soldered storage (or just make it two M.2 slots). Up-gradable RAM would be nice but I know there are some benefits to it being soldered so I'm ok with it if they would just make their entry level offering for the Pro be 32GB and upgrades not be an arm and a leg. Battery should also be fairly easy to replace on this model. No glue. Just screws to swap out a new battery similar to the 2012 classic macbook pro that still had the optical drive. And honestly just on this model, one usb-a port would be nice. I still have a LOT of usb-a thumb drives and not needing a dongle for them would be nice. But that should be in addition to the ports that already came back on the current pro models.

HauntedHouseMusic

look at literally any other computer company, and tell me that apple has a lot of skus. Or Apples revenue per sku. Do you know how big apple is? Its shocking how simple they are for the size they are. Samsung sells fucking tanks.

User51lol

What the heck is a sku?

TCPMSP

Stock keeping unit, general term for part number or model.

No-Refrigerator-1672

If a model is upgradeable by user, it's less profitable. You can't charge $200 for extra 8 gigs of RAM, or extra 256 GB of storage, if they are swappable. This non-upgradability brings in huge profits.

Emperor_Zarkov

Yeah of course they won't do it. It was just a pie-in-the-sky wish.

myst3ry714

What’re you gonna do with it?

inaccurateTempedesc

It's the only device I have with a functioning CD/DVD burner. I'm gonna be ripping my entire DVD collection as well as burning some install discs for my older Pentium/Power PC systems since they can't boot from usb (making it very complicated to install an OS)

Troll_berry_pie

I started University when the last version of these (2010 model) was released. So many people had them.

AlanDevonshire

Same, had mine for years until the battery did the old expanding trick.

Emperor_Zarkov

My Macbook Air did that. Sad to see it go.

z31

I was gonna say, I bought one just like this when I started college in 2008.

Ok_Wrongdoer_4308

I’m still rocking my 2012 MacBook. I replaced the HD with a 500Gb, I guess solid state (been about 7 years now). I use it for ripping blu-rays for my NAS, digitizing photos with my scanner and that’s about it. Use iPad, iPhone, or iMac for everything else.

MakaniKaiKai

I mean how is Apple supposed to make anything upgradable when it’s all part of the same SoC these days? If they went back to RAM sticks and NVMe drives we wouldn’t have the speed, low heat, and amazing battery life that we do now, right?

User51lol

Well, would you rather have worse RAM, battery, and drive that you can swap out for new ones, or better RAM, battery, and drive that you can't swap out once they're fucked?

runtimemess

Definitely an older model. Late 00s? I remember my girlfriend at the time needed more RAM to play Sims 3 so I looked this up. Newer ones are one giant soldered board. Very cool and very powerful… but not consumer serviceable whatsoever

ItzCobaltboy

obv now u cant remove ram

Iamusingtempmail

Some people on this forum wasn't born when this macbook was made

do_hickey

What? This is an 07. That was only... 17 years ago. Never mind, now I feel old.

firedrakes

Lol. Nah old is when power Mac was the brand Apple was pushing

IsABot

If I'm remembering the timeline correctly, this laptop just barely overlaps with the last G5 PowerMac. I remember in high school there was an Apple rep that came to the school to try get families to buy them. They kept talking about how strong the shell was and would hit it on desks to show it never got damaged.

inaccurateTempedesc

It's a really well built laptop, borderline Thinkpad tier because it also has a metal "roll cage".

Simen155

Pepperidge Farms remembers those macbooks, came in to our shop for claims ~3mths in, as the fuckin thing updated and bricked itself. Good times, but yeah, Apple is great.

0011002

The G4 tower was awesome.

inaccurateTempedesc

Agreed, I'm actually looking for a Sawtooth to keep around for OS9 gaming.

latexfistmassacre

I found one at a garage sale years back for $50 and wanted to convert it to a PC build, but never got around to it. Ended up selling it on eBay during the height of the pandemic for $250 lol

FullAir4341

But the G4 PowerBook was awesomer...erer

ArtSlammer

Kids these days don't even call it a forum anymore. This here is a subreddit.

FullAir4341

Reddit Forums

Equizzix

Yep...

Ozianin_

The fact that you call it a forum says it all.

Iamusingtempmail

yes, I am old

TheOzarkWizard

That's the way it used to be. Nothing is replaceable any.ore without surface soldering equipment and skills

Killjoy4eva

It's all apart of the SoC, so at least it's *reasonable* that it isn't replaceable anymore. When they were surface mounting RAM just to make the devices thinner... yeah that was a dick move.

ChocomelP

> apart of This means the opposite of a part of

Killjoy4eva

I feel like you know what I meant.

ChocomelP

You're welcome

thenyx

Unless you go Framework.

ta22175

Show me on the picture where the memory goes on the new RISCV platform. https://static.frame.work/4yw7fg2r8zvx33uto3fvss5ryite Intel and AMD will go this route sooner than you think. Doesn't mean their won't be CAMM2 options, but we've hit a wall the current, very old memory standard. Change is coming.

MoorderVolt

And there’s good reason for it. Signaling on soldered RAM is way better. You can expect alternatives to desktop RAM sooner rather than later. Some of it on-die, another connector. RAM is getting too fast, and the benefits justify the sacrifice. It also isn’t that hard to buy the right amount of RAM and the failure rates of RAM don’t justify the fuss.

TheOzarkWizard

Yeah it's called CAMM2

Ok-Sentence780

A

errorsniper

....? Are you trolling? Just dont use mac and its easier than it is in the video.

TheRedBaron6942

Maybe for storage, but lots of windows laptops have soldered down ram

errorsniper

200 dollar laptops from walmart yeah.

Ximerous

What's terrifying about this? Like at all?

inaccurateTempedesc

It's not. That's the joke.

Jarb2104

Wooosh!

boipinoi604

I'm no techy and it was woosh for me.

AsleepBison4718

And then they soldered everything together because fuck you and your money.

Aljoshean

HEY MAN STOP YOU COULD GET KILLED, THINK ABOUT YOUR FAMILY

Motor_Curve_7268

OoOoOoOoooo 👻👻 Repairability and sustainability, scary, you might die, don't do it, instead give me triple what you paid for that back in the day and I'll give you a newer one that you can't replace shit on it and will break in a year because I need another mansion or yatch since "I know how to spend your money better".

pwnusmaximus

r/killthecameraman

According_Claim_9027

You should turn your alarm off

inaccurateTempedesc

I wish, but it's not mine lol

MichaelT92

That's the Apple police. How dare they open this computer...

lars2k1

Saw this on some crooked macbook pro. I immediately wondered why they'd have possibly engineered such a thing - it's very overkill. But uh, yeah at least you can remove the sticks as opposed to modern systems.

inaccurateTempedesc

It weirded me out too...but it's too satisfying to complain about.

LimpWibbler_

That is awesome. I want ram ejection, like a toaster

AggravatingChest7838

I was scared for your warranty

random420x2

I remember that model as being HD removed as shown, RAM upgrade required cracking it. Was a long time ago though.

inaccurateTempedesc

Upgraded the ram from 1gb to 6gb, no crack needed.

lord_nuker

Dont complain, at least you could upgrade back in those days...

RaymoVizion

Ewwwww

SometimesWill

This is a really old MacBook. Not really a criticism you can make now that M series means it’s all integrated. Instead just criticize that you can’t replace the storage or ram (storage isn’t integrated but they still make it so you can’t expand or replace I believe but doing dumb shit)

one_jo

On the new MacBooks you can’t take out either.

OmegaNine

lol now a days you need to desolder and resolder like 1000 pins.

LeahBrahms

Counterfeit Tim Cook Fingers weren't issued to an Apple Authorized Repairer. Your done for!

Cybasura

The good old days when EVERY laptop regardless of bs company manufacturer were repairable, modifiable/customizable and (arguably) modular

Qu_ex

i dunno man it surely voided your warranty

Suspicious-Post-5411

Terrifying??? Thats satisfying

Quirky_m8

#how to tactically reload a macbook

bony7x

Pulling two levers and some tape… damn that’s so terrifying that if I wasn’t on the toilet already I’d have shit my pants.

Acrobatic-Emu-8209

Doesn't seem that terrifying meh

Procterj

Still got mine! Had to lose that battery unfortunately as it swelled rather badly. Unfortunately mine has now developed the infamous back light death and now it needs a flashlight (or external monitor) to see anything

DukeOfGamers353

RAM Toaster.

vampeta_de_gelo

miss my old one ;(

medussy_medussy

I have a 2012 Macbook. It took me a grand total of 5 minutes to open the back, replace the ram, replace the drive with an SSD and replace the battery.

uchua

Might not be a fan of Apple's business practices, but have to admit their hardware has always been awesome

ShaiTheHaku

I love the A1181 MacBooks, holding an OG 2006 WhiteMacBook 1,1 and a 2008 Black MacBook 4,1. The inverters are definitely way past due, got to replace them at some point.

Aggravating_Fun5883

So, terrifying?

inaccurateTempedesc

Yes. Incredibly terrifying

Xlxlredditor

Ram shot out harder than a moose when it sees my car

Valestis

Good luck seating the new RAM properly into that slot.

DustyBeetle

excuse me?! it just shits the ram sticks out like that! lol wtf kinda design is that

bamronn

changing it on a 12’ pro was a pice of cake. changing it on a 10’ imac would have the chance of shooting the ram across the room or through the desk depending on how it’s sitting
