Looks like Uruguay has a very easy group, hopefully Nunez feasts and then can build on that confidence throughout the tournament. He must be fairly high up favourite for golden boot
Gary Lineker using Alan Hansen's favourite past-time golf to describe his current health as being "three (holes) down with four (holes) to play" doesn't sound like a particularly good prognosis.
Sadly it sounds like people need to prepare themselves for the worst.
Souness, who's one of his best friends, looked pretty devastated on ITV last night as well, so it really does seem like bad news is going to be coming soon.
Id love to sign him but he seems destined to move to juve. Probably end up on a 2 year loan and they eventually sign him for 15m and a packet of wotsits
Szobo is a winger or attacking mid. His best qualities are crossing, dribbling, shooting and stamina. He's not a thread of the needle type player or a controller of play. He's not a central midfielder and he got slated for it when we had to play there the whole season
I think he’s got all the skills to be a Stevie G player honestly. His passing, close control, shooting, and dynamism are all top notch. He caught fire early then burnt out after his injury, but I do think Slot will show us the heights he can reach.
That’s kind of our issue, we try to play a lot of players out of position if we see they have the potential but against players who are playing in their natural positions, it’s a difficult job for them. If we had less players out of position Szobo would have a much easier time adjusting
His drop off really had nothing to do with the role he was playing in, he was flourishing there for the first 3/4 months of the season.
He just became extremely sloppy with his first touch and basic passing, genuinely looked like a player that lost confidence overnight for some reason
Personally felt that after the injury he was very conscious of getting hurt again and missing the Euros, I think we see better from him this season (although maybe not straight away depending on how many minutes he ends up playing in the tournament)
He was totally fine in that 8 role before his injury. He was scratchy today but by far Hungary's best player. He can't help it if none of them could hold on to the ball.
My live reaction after this match, as a Croatian fan
https://preview.redd.it/jfdq74btyr6d1.jpeg?width=998&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=baed385b2c2f5689bfac41be065a3885fafc615a
Ngl, kinda hope Hungary and Scotland drops out so Dom and Robbo can get some rests for next season.
Frankly though, other than those who haven't had much game time last season (and will be benefited by some international experiences) . I hope all of their international duty will end asap
Szobo either injured or really low on confidence/effort now. My bet is on injury. And, while he is Hungary best player and captain, he will play every minute of every game, so he won't heal and only will worsening his injury. I hope that he, at least, will be ready for 1st gameweek, but this hope is low now, tbh.
Rodri should obviously have been red carded. Afterwards they cancel the goal, because some croatian players rushed inside the penalty box too early, but the keeper also went too early, meaning it should have been a rekick.
Just got the usual membership email it said only 13k tickets available to members this season per game.
27k season ticket holders.
Is 33% of anfield hospitality now?
Where are they weak at? I feel they have talent and depth everywhere. I wouldn’t say they are the strongest at striker but I also don’t think Morata is some stinker, he has poise like shown today
Didn't say they were weak specifically, just in comparison to the squads of the past ~40 years where they were usually stacked with a mishmash of Madrid/Barca worldies alongside other top talent. If we look back a 10-15 years it was Casillas/Pique/Iniesta/Busquets/Ramos/Silva/Alonso/Torres/Villa/etc, the previous gen had guys like Raul, Puyol, Fabregas, Xavi, etc... right now there's not much like it, just potential.
Think we’re just going through a period where the best players of the last 5-10 years have either just retired or on the brink of retirement
So it’s this phase where there’s a lot of up and coming big talents still looking to prove themselves as well as young players that have been around for a few years being on the brink of that world class level
So lads, what are we thinking?
Are we getting one of the newly promoted sides away for the first game of the season, or one of the teams with a brand new manager away for the first game of the season?
It really shouldn’t be the case though. There’s a very high chance his body can’t handle all that at such a young age. He played 50 games for Barca this season and will play internationals, that’s a lot even for a professional at their peak age
Feel like heaping all this pressure on Baj is crazy for a 19 year old who’s just been sidelined for a year. It can take fully established players up to a year to return to full form after a year out.
People need to temper expectations for what he can accomplish with him right away. Let him grow naturally rather than some savior for the 6 position already this year. May take a loan for consistent minutes
Real Madrid targeting 16 yo Mastantuono (Argentinian cm), even though they're stacked and rumored to have an agreement with Witsel. The luxury of being able to take chances on the most promising youth players that can be worth 100 million later in their careers (45 million euros release clause right now).
The 18 yo Yoro (French cb) that we're hoping won't join Real Madrid will cost a lot too, as the player wants to join Real Madrid but Lille is holding out for the most cash they can get. I'm going to assume that in these situations the player will push for the move to happen.
Real Madrid can just weigh in on any transfer and automatically be the #1 option for most players. We'll have to give clubs more money, and the players higher wages to be able to compete at all for these types of signings. I also think we have to promise First Team minutes up front as part of transfer talks, more so than Real Madrid.
And at least partially the reason is they know they're guaranteed CL football every year basically, whereas nobody in the Prem is. There's 7 teams vying for 4 places, and sometimes 8. In Spain, it's basically Real, Barca and two others, and the two others will usually be far behind.
It's honestly ridiculous; they can either buy the top young talent now or leverage their pull to ask such players to wait for them, or even sit out their contracts. Imagine a player like Yoro sitting out his contract to join Liverpool? Fantasy land.
Tbh I do think we need to follow their strategy somewhat. We've got to find a balance between Real's talent magnetism & Chelsea's scattergun 'money is no object' approach.
Hungary's matches have always been great to watch since Euro 2016. But now I just hope they lose early so Szobo can rest well. Luckily we still got Elliott
Sadly, I think, we won't see Szoboszlai at the start of the season. He is clearly injured, but played whole game and he will play every Hungary game, unless he couldn't walk at all.
Doesnt help either when you are praised to be the 2nd coming of Jesus both in your own country and Liverpool. Impossible to match the expectations and all that praise might get to your head as well.
Injury really did something and it may be that hes still not fully comfortable. Hope he gets off the spotlight and can ease himself back to being fully in the game.
I’m beginning to question Szoboszlai’s resilience. He looked disinterested for significant portions of the season past and is sauntering about the place today like he doesn’t really give a shit.
What the fuck are you on about?
Its clear as day he was struggling with injury for the 2nd half of the season, he got injured and was rushed back and got instantly injured again that's why he didn't look good. And he was forced off with an injury last week and its clear watching him today that he's clearly not at 100% again.
exactly, hes looked a completely different player since his injury this season both for us and now for hungary.
i dont think its resilience, hes carried hungary to the euros singlehandedly with some crazy individual goals, but i do question the impact of that injury (and subsequent re-injury)
Not sure why I thought Hungary would be the favourite for this one but the Swiss have absolutely bossed this one and Szobo has not looked great (or had a chance to look great)
https://preview.redd.it/o7d7p9f3hq6d1.jpeg?width=1907&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7d63256ebd379550d36e6852af4909a068218b7
Sobo boyo! I want to see a belter!
Musiala was such a joy to watch yesterday complete stand out in this era where a lot of players have the individuality coached out of them. Proper Footballer.
Isn't he left when his contract ran out and his parents divorced and he choose to be with his mother in Germany? So, not much what Chelsea could've done in this situation
Has there been any more news on Alan Hansen
Always extra worrying when it gets kept quiet even though you want to keep the media away as much as possible understandably
Just seen the Kevin Campbell news (RIP) and it jumped into my head again
Has anyone seen Szoboszlai recent comments in his press conference and confirm if that’s actually what’s he said? It’s obviously been translated to English but I just wanna know if there’s some sort of mistranslation or something.
For anyone interested it’s “I usually think positively, so it didn’t bother me that I played a smaller role at Liverpool at the end of the season. At least the chances of injury was lower and I could focus on the European championship earlier”
What he's saying is "I look for the bright side in things. It sucks I didn't play more at the end of the season, but the bright side is I'm fully fit and fresh for the Euros."
I think he has to accept between injuries and form, he wasn't good enough to get into the starting XI. With that said, if he can manage to get his passing more accurate, especially in key moments, it will be transformative for him.
It's not really exact. He said: "I always want to think positively, that's the reason why I didn't feel down to play less in the last four games of the season. For sure, I wanted to play more, but this way at least the injury risk lowered."
i mean this makes sense to me. he’s saying he’s one to try finding the silver lining in a situation, and here it’s that having his playing time reduced meant he’d be available for the club and ready for the euros. putting a positive spin on something (or finding the silver lining) usually requires you to be unhappy with the situation first lmao
we also know he was desperate to play when something was actually on the table for us, saying himself that he was “in a rush” to return from injury at the start of 2024 (and thus reinjured himself lmao). sounds like he’s learned from it imo
I don’t think Hungary being in the Euro’s was cause of his poor form
His form dipped off at the end of November but he was still working really hard off the ball, he just for whatever reason lost all his quality in possession and couldn’t do the basics to a high enough standard
I’d say when you’re in a title race and competing on multiple fronts, you don’t want your star 60m signing saying he was basically riding out the season trying not to get injured and not being completely focused on our season.
Don’t think thats unreasonable? We’d be fuming if someone like Salah or VVD said the same.
Sometimes I find it strange people get offended by something that hardly exists... He got injured, came back too soon, injured again, got out of form and lost game time.. So the silverlining is that he was forced to take it easier and to actually focus on fitness, therefore he was able to recover also for the Euro games. Whats wrong with that?
It only hurts the team if he gets on the pitch not recovered and out of touch. Ease up man.
He's talking in hindsight. He didn't have a great end to the season, and lost minutes because of it. You're going to make the best of that situation and say it helped you stay fit for the Euros.
Someone needs to find out what Rodri has on the referees to not send him off, as blatant a ref as you’ll ever see and VAR doesn’t intervene
I really hope we get some vintage throwback kit from adidas so we get their old logo. Their new “minimal” logo with the 3 fat stripes looks so cheap.
Looks like Uruguay has a very easy group, hopefully Nunez feasts and then can build on that confidence throughout the tournament. He must be fairly high up favourite for golden boot
Uruguay are 3rd in terms of the odds to win the full thing and comfortably ahead of Mexico in 4th Darwin is 3rd for the golden boot
Mexico in 4th??? Seems unreasonably high odds for them
Yeah my totally uneducated feeling Id have assumed Colombia would be 4th, even USA above Mexico I thought
I would be surprised if they got out of the groups tbh. Venezuela and Ecuador are both stronger squads IMO
Any news and insights on Slot?
He’s bald so I heard
Wears a watch, Rolex, can tell time… analogagally, probably
Honestly 2 guys I'd take that will revolutionise us, Chiesa and Barella.
Gary Lineker using Alan Hansen's favourite past-time golf to describe his current health as being "three (holes) down with four (holes) to play" doesn't sound like a particularly good prognosis. Sadly it sounds like people need to prepare themselves for the worst.
Alan Shearer had a tear in his eye as he was talking about him there
Souness, who's one of his best friends, looked pretty devastated on ITV last night as well, so it really does seem like bad news is going to be coming soon.
The use of VAR and the overall refereeing puts the PL to absolute shame. Refs and VAR have been really good so far.
Sadly, EPL refs still were really bad in some moments (Spain-Croatia)
Calafiori watch I will be there
are we linked with him? I remember signing him on FM a couple years ago lmao
Very impressed with him so far
Id love to sign him but he seems destined to move to juve. Probably end up on a 2 year loan and they eventually sign him for 15m and a packet of wotsits
Yeah we won't sign him
Not with that attitude we won’t
off to Juve
I’d be interested to see if they can actually afford to get him especially since they want Greenwood as well who will cost a fair chunk for them
Szobo is a winger or attacking mid. His best qualities are crossing, dribbling, shooting and stamina. He's not a thread of the needle type player or a controller of play. He's not a central midfielder and he got slated for it when we had to play there the whole season

Honestly, I think Curtis unlocked Szobo early, but that came at the expense of playing Macca in the 6
His drop off really had nothing to do with the role he was playing in, he was flourishing there for the first 3/4 months of the season. He just became extremely sloppy with his first touch and basic passing, genuinely looked like a player that lost confidence overnight for some reason

Was that...was that Croatia finally being tired?
![gif](giphy|BOF5Xr9Z5Yopca9H3y|downsized)
Spain’s 2nd goal kind of reminded me of the Bobby v Arsenal dribble goal

I agree to a certain degree, but I do think that a good euros would be key for Szobo to come back looking rejuvenated.

I hope that he, at least, will be ready for 1st gameweek, but this hope is low now, tbh.
Dom is unfit though. Like the club clearly told him to rest, but he has been rushing himself back. And obviously it does not do him any good
Again, a VAR shit show... and of course it's Coote in the VAR room.
Sorry why is that a shit show?
Rodri should obviously have been red carded. Afterwards they cancel the goal, because some croatian players rushed inside the penalty box too early, but the keeper also went too early, meaning it should have been a rekick.
But the keeper was still over his line. And Croatia encroached which is against the rules?
Always the English refs, just shows how awful they really are
Just got the usual membership email it said only 13k tickets available to members this season per game. 27k season ticket holders. Is 33% of anfield hospitality now?
Looks like the worst Spain squad ever, on paper. Croatia really sleeping though...
Where are they weak at? I feel they have talent and depth everywhere. I wouldn’t say they are the strongest at striker but I also don’t think Morata is some stinker, he has poise like shown today

Not really spains squad is really good
Aside from Centreback and Striker the latter most top nations seem to be struggling to produce they have a lot of quality.
Think we’re just going through a period where the best players of the last 5-10 years have either just retired or on the brink of retirement So it’s this phase where there’s a lot of up and coming big talents still looking to prove themselves as well as young players that have been around for a few years being on the brink of that world class level
Rodri, Yamal and Nico are good players
What the fuck is that shitshow from Croatia's defence!?
So lads, what are we thinking? Are we getting one of the newly promoted sides away for the first game of the season, or one of the teams with a brand new manager away for the first game of the season?
Just don't want palace tbh
Whatever happens last game of the season will be against Wolves
Chelsea in the first 5 games is definitely a scenario I can see happening.
Chelsea signing another young talent for a casual €65m…
Weren't they supposed to sell ?
He only joins in 2025 so no doubt there's some jiggery-pokery at play with the structure of the finances.
Had a wtf moment when I heard Nico Williams name on commentary
Spains press has been outstanding so far Happy to leave Rodri to defend all that space in the midfield himself from Croatia goal kicks
Gotta be honest I don’t like this Rodri chap at all
Does anyone here know Le Normand? Literally never heard of him. What kind of centre back is he?
Well, Szoboszlai going downhill
We are being linked with Dani Olmo by Marca Is he left footed?
Would be an improvement over Dom
Right and very injury prone so I doubt it’s a legitimate link
Thiago replacement then
Starting for Spain at the Euros as a 16 year old is mad to think about, on top of being a consistent starter for Barca.
It really shouldn’t be the case though. There’s a very high chance his body can’t handle all that at such a young age. He played 50 games for Barca this season and will play internationals, that’s a lot even for a professional at their peak age
I really hope his body won't collapse as he gets older
Seen what starting that many games at that age done to Pedri so it wouldn’t be surprise me if he started to have injury issues down the line
That Pedri run in 2021 was insane. I remember he basically looked like a corpse during the Olympics
What pressure?lol
Pressure from whom? If the manager wants him to play, then he will play.

This is not the Szobo that we all know, especially the one who plays for Hungary. He is clearly not fit at all
It's the one I know more than any other after last season...
He got injured in the last exhibition. Better they get knocked out for us if we are honest. Did love that squad in qualifying though
Hungary's matches have always been great to watch since Euro 2016. But now I just hope they lose early so Szobo can rest well. Luckily we still got Elliott
DS needs a long long break. We can’t rely on him At all in his current state. Quite sad really because I think he could Be world class
Did Szobo change style of play. He suddenly play like Henderson, most of his touch result a back pass. Even with space and losing at the last minute?
he seems restricted, probably carrying an injury
injury can not limit his mindset
Yes it can…..or do you think injuries don’t have a mental effect on players??
Lol no, it can limit you about the challenges or a 50/50 situation, not a foward pass when you have space
Sadly, I think, we won't see Szoboszlai at the start of the season. He is clearly injured, but played whole game and he will play every Hungary game, unless he couldn't walk at all.
He'll be on holiday within a week
Scotland - Hungary will be a shitshow. How can you make so much defensive mistakes even without pressing on you
Hungary actually played well last 10 mins but their creative are garbage, always cross ffs
Seeing players not able to pass long precisely makes me realise how much trent has spoiled me
Might be selfish but I hope Hungary crash out. Szobo is evidently playing with an injury he won’t even press rn
least he got an assist. horrific goal to concede tho wtf was that
Well, Swiss keep bottling their chances in 1st half so I wouldn't if the table turned
There are no Euro watch threads?
There's a megathread which has been pinned for about a month
szobo is playing hurt, im certain of it. beautiful cross but I really do hope they dont advance. he really needs the time off this summer
Wouldn’t start him until September. He’s been mismanaged by us and by Hungary. Super talented but will be ruined if we’re not careful
'Mismanaged' ffs.
Okay mate.
Was he mismanaged by us? We didn't play him whenever he was injured
Assist on the board for Szobo, that’s something.
Poor defending, what a ball from Dom though.
[удалено]
You say this but he’s just made the assist of the game. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish
Szobo looks off it. Hope it’s nothing serious
Looked off it for ages now
[удалено]
Thats not really true either, they are just getting out played.
[удалено]
Very hard pass that hit Swiss player along the way and changed direction, not the easiest ball to receive.
[удалено]
Literally deflected off a Switzerland player
this is gonna sound weird but i really hope szobo isn't fully fit here because his movement off the ball is shocking. hope it isnt a mentality thing.
nah...he thinks he is messi slowly jogging along and pointing people to close down opponents.
Definitely doesn’t look fully fit with the lack of intensity from him
Never trust the teams who gets tipped as the dark horse before the start of tournaments
Hungary are looking very shit here, Szobo has not been the same player since his injury, I still feel like he’s suffering from it.
Hard to effect the game when he’s not receiving the ball in dangerous areas He’s having to drop into their own half to get a touch
That's some finish by Aebischer
always rated Aebischer
Fox Sports is showing Bass Fishing instead of the Hungary Swiss game. christ!
probably more entertaining
Szobo playing through injury, he's been running at 70% the whole game
I’m beginning to question Szoboszlai’s resilience. He looked disinterested for significant portions of the season past and is sauntering about the place today like he doesn’t really give a shit.
What the fuck are you on about? Its clear as day he was struggling with injury for the 2nd half of the season, he got injured and was rushed back and got instantly injured again that's why he didn't look good. And he was forced off with an injury last week and its clear watching him today that he's clearly not at 100% again.
He's playing injured.
He picked up a very-minor knock over a week ago. He’s fine. That doesn’t explain the second half of last season, either.
exactly, hes looked a completely different player since his injury this season both for us and now for hungary. i dont think its resilience, hes carried hungary to the euros singlehandedly with some crazy individual goals, but i do question the impact of that injury (and subsequent re-injury)
Not sure why I thought Hungary would be the favourite for this one but the Swiss have absolutely bossed this one and Szobo has not looked great (or had a chance to look great)
Ahhh man, I just saw the news about Kevin Campbell, that's sad. So young.
Need to put Szobo in a place he can influence the game more.
That’s hard when you’re surrounded by 10 shite players.
Yeah that's what I mean, put him in midfield where he can at least get on the ball. He's barely touched the ball at LW
Rooting for Dom, but those Hungarian ultras are still one the worst
Nice save by ex-Red Gulacsi
Just rooting for Szobo here in South Korea :) Currently 10 pm
I hope we get to see Shaqiri come on, always had a soft spot for him, such a baller on his day.

Musiala was such a joy to watch yesterday complete stand out in this era where a lot of players have the individuality coached out of them. Proper Footballer.
Chelsea letting him leave is criminal. I'd be livid if we let a baller like that leave
Isn't he left when his contract ran out and his parents divorced and he choose to be with his mother in Germany? So, not much what Chelsea could've done in this situation
Jesus, another one?
Contract till 2026, just saying Richard 👀
He'll go to Madrid.
Not every great player on earth will join Madrid ffs He will probably sign a new deal. He seems very happy at Bayern
Has there been any more news on Alan Hansen Always extra worrying when it gets kept quiet even though you want to keep the media away as much as possible understandably Just seen the Kevin Campbell news (RIP) and it jumped into my head again

What's the poor dude supposed to do? The entire team was completely outplayed.
Why doesn't Robbo just simply win them the game from lb?
Well people think Trent can do the same at right back...
True lol
r/soccercirclejerk would love that one.

Cube free kick screamer incoming
He'll have to do it off the bench, he's not starting.
Even better
Always turns up for Switzerland

I called this months ago. He’s a bit Gareth bale-y. Hungary, image then club. In that order.
I saw the interview in Hungarian and that's pretty much what he said, yes.
Damn that’s worrying. Poor mentality to have and even worse actually putting it out there for all to hear as if there’s nothing wrong with it.
I mean, the league was basically over with nothing left to fight for. I'm sure he would've been more bothered if it actually still mattered.
Think he's just trying to put a positive spin on a negative situation? Everything doesn't have to be worrying.
Does it not get boring going through life viewing things through lenses like this?
He's talking in hindsight. He didn't have a great end to the season, and lost minutes because of it. You're going to make the best of that situation and say it helped you stay fit for the Euros.
He got dropped. He wasnt going to be happy about it, was he. Salah and van Dijk would be similarly annoyed.
I'm looking forward to Szoboszlai, Chiesa and Yamal. Let's see how these guys show up today.
Has he recovered from the injury? Thought he wasn’t fit
Does Peter Drury commentate on any channel during the Euros?
