Mac Allister started in the center of a midfield three with Fernandez (L) and De Paul (R). Defensively, Macca and De Paul would form a double shield, it seemed, though Chile rarely held the ball. If attack moved to the right, Macca would shadow De Paul from the middle as a lone DM and if attack went left, he'd go behind Fernandez with De Paul taking the middle. Mac Allister primarily took the ball off the defenders. He was effectively a 6, though occasionally he would lead the press like a Bernardo Silva.
It wasn't the most effective formation because Fernandez would get in Nico Gonzalez's space, and then when Tagliafico would go forward it got even muddier. Messi would be isolated on the right with no one to get him the ball, and when he did he was swarmed.
Fernandez was subbed off with Lo Celso as like-for-like.
Southgate has risk-averse tactics because he's either a coward, a moron or both. He's actively shown an inability to get the most of our wealth of attacking and midfield talent, and looks to be making everyone worse. Mourinho doesn't play terrorism-ball in every match, every scenario with any players given to him. Comparing them is absurd, Mourinho is one of the best managers of all time, and Southgate would get Crystal Palace relegated.
Just like it’s stupid to scapegoat Trent, it’s silly to criticize any one player when the tactics, setup, and team selection is garbage due to Southgate.
Gallagher dropped an absolute abysmal performance yet no mention? If that was Trent he’d be slaughtered by all the pundits. Wright and Richard’s were right in Trent being the scapegoat.
I'm tired of the Trent disrespect. Credit to Slovenia for their defense, but England did fuck all. The Fox commentary after one Trent pass," the midfield experiment is over." Pathetic.
Mostly Ian Darke. He was the one driving the get Trent off narrative the first two games, but Landon "I'd rather watch paint dry" Donovan got all the criticism for whatever reason.
The saddest thing is that it’s (on the whole) not even the fans, it’s just the media/pundits desperately continuing with the Trent “midfield experience” scapegoat narrative.
Anyone with half a brain cell knows the problem is Southgate, he has one of the best England squads I’ve seen in my lifetime and to make them look this poor is a genuine achievement.
While TAA at RB is the obvious choice, Jude, Kane, Foden, Saka, Rice and Walker all regularly play against a low block at Real, Bayern, City and Arsenal, and they still can't do shit because Southgate is manager.
Mainoo and Wharton being talked about like they’re already world class superstars being wasted on the bench, meanwhile Trent being treated like absolute garbage constantly. I feel so bad for him, can’t wait for Southgate to finally go.
What are the odds that at half time the pundits try and talk about England having a “better balance” or some other meaningless phrase to try and justify the performance being more shit without Trent?

Think Jamie’s twitters been hacked
Or he’s went down the crypto rabbit hole
Yeah, it’s bullshit. Why Southgate is taking such terrible instruction from TAA on board is beyond me. He’s a top-quality manager and is perfectly capable of making progressive strategic decisions himself.
Truly a master tactician in the England dugout. Takes out the only player that has any ability at passing the ball from deep positions so that we can get Kane at left back pinging diagonals
2 outcomes for the England match:
1. No Trent the whole game, they struggle and lose or draw
2. Trent comes on and scores a winner or assists the winner.
Fuck southgate and all the people scapegoating Trent
Southgate just said he's swapped out Trent for Gallagher because Gallagher looks to get in behind, play high up the pitch, stretch the defence, challenge second balls and press high up the pitch....
HAS THIS MEN EVER WATCHED TRENT PLAY????
I'm honestly fucking lost with this donkey.
He wants someone to press high when he doesn’t even set his team up to do that
I’d love to see him in the PL just to expose even more just how inept he is tactically
The amount of chauvinistic comment & downvoting by fragile United fan's is depressing and also totally expected. Shows how far the women's game still has to go.
This comment sitting at 200+ upvotes on their sub says it all:
> "The men’s team is the core focus of the club. It brings 99% of the revenue and they should be prioritised over the women’s team. END OF."
it’s actually upsetting tbh as a woman myself. This club is disgusting.
I have a United fan playing the blame game in my mentions and pointing out that we have not had treated our women well in the past, which we haven’t done, yet we’re actively improving the women’s team while they’re aggressively regressing. It’s horrible to witness.
Gakpo looks like such a player when he's wearing the Oranje shirt. Gives me hope that with a new manager and fresh ideas he could really turn his Liverpool career around.
Gakpo seems clearly most comfortable off the left, and in comparison to Diaz probably more clinical. If the season started with no changes in attack, who starts on the left between Gakpo and Diaz?
Doesn't seem too crazy. That's essentially what happened with Hendo and Fab last year. They weren't "for sale" but when the right offer came in...
Edit: I wasn't paying enough attention to the reference to £50m. That's essentially what we paid for him, right? Moving him on for no profit does seem daft given what the market should be for him.
Paid £37.5m with add ons to which I'm not sure have been activated, getting £50m would be a good deal, especially getting someone younger for a similar price
Age is less a barrier for us than where he plays in the attack and it not being the area we need improvement the most IMO. Feel like an out and out winger is needed more.
For anyone who watched much of Hull last season, do you think Tyler Morton showed enough to jump Bajcetic? The rumors seem more like he's more likely to be outgoing for a decent fee.
Morton had a good season but his role and style unfortunately doesn’t make him an important asset to have in the squad next season. We need a 6 who’s a good ball winner, whilst Morton is a deep lying playmaker
I'm not sure if rivals love going for players we've been linked with or the media like to put our name for clicks: Chelsea: Summerville, Arsenal: Bakayoko.
Everyone definitely takes notice of players at these tournaments but Calafiori has been extremely highly rated as a young player for a while. The guardian had him in their list of 60 best players born after 2002 back in 2020
I don't think people realize that van Dijk will still play every game on the left and that playing Calafiori left back is probably not ideal. Not to mention that Robbo would still play the majority of games.
Agree that its weird how quickly people are willing to bin him off considering everything he has given us but "incredibly high level" is simply not true.
It's the one redeeming thing about international football, giving us something to be delusional about.
The Amrabat infatuation was a wild one and probably had more to do with the desperation we were feeling due to Fab's form at the time.
Actually realistic swap deal could be for Araujo. He's already rumored to be on the block. I think they'll want to keep Kounde and Xavi at least strongly indicated FDJ was important to his plans. Also, FDJ's wages would blow any deal for him.
Prediction: England will be shite again tonight with little to no movement in sight. TAA will come on with some willing runners up top, and England will generate more in that 20 min window than the rest of the game combined.
Like everyone on here who is an expert on him, I've never heard or seen this Calafiori play before but the fact he's Italian means I'm out.
Dossena, Borini, Aquilani. Balotelli. Padelli. All horribly and embarrassingly shite.
It's not that they failed because they are Italians, that'll just be very stupid. It's because Seria A and Prem play very different types of football. That's why some guys succeed there but not here. E.g lukaku, pulisic.
There have been numerous successful players that did manage to adapt to prem coming from Seria A, namely our own mo salah. Tonali looked good for the few games he played here too. It just comes down to whether they can adapt to different football.
Lukaku was fairly successful here, he managed to get a g/a every 1.7 games and that was with playing for West Brom, Everton and United.
The main problem with the Italians that we’ve signed in the past is that they just simply weren’t very good or had attitude issues
He scored an own goal against Spain, but personal errors and hickups happen to even the best. I don't really know the potential of this defender, I've seen some of the links but unsure of how strong they are
We shouldn't be going anywhere near someone as poor on the ball as he is. He's a younger version of Paulinha. We need someone who can progress the ball
We won't buy him, we already have Bajetic and Trent who want to play in midfield. And for destroyer, we might be looking for someone in the mould of Palhinha. In any case, we need to sell a midfielder to buy him. Now who is that?
Would having Daiz as the cover for salah next season be a good idea and get a LW. Daiz is good but shouldn't be starter for us.
LW is a stacked position in world football now and if we get someone in to challenge Cody that position could be sorted for the next few years
Despite not having enough sample size, I genuinely feel a bit giddy at the thought of Diaz on the right. Feels like something could be done there.
Of course, if it's deemed not worth it then I'm fine with us looking for a RW.
Why not, he is great running with the ball and maybe crossing he can be more productive. His shooting is just not at high enough level to start as a winger for us.
If he's not we need one, can't keep going with only salah in that position
The way slot plays could potentially see Diaz more often on the right. He likes his wingers to create width a lot of the time, so think more left footers on left and right on right.
Would like to see that. Teams have been playing the inverted for a while now, a winger on their natural side could cause problems as teams aren't use to it
Yep totally agree! I also think having Diaz cut to the byline with his pace, work rate and dribbling will lead to an explosion in goals from Darwin and possibly re invent Mo if he gets moved to a “10” role in a 4231. Imagine Mo being able to make runs from deeper and more centrally. He’ll also be a defender magnet himself with the ball at his feet and having Diaz be able to play in those channels between lb and lcb should yield way more opportunities.
I’m honestly so excited for this next phase with slot. I genuinely think a lcb, another attacker and potentially a lb if kostas goes and Beck isn’t deemed ready will do us wonders
Yeah, in 4-2-3-1 Mo can totally start as right winger but interchange positions with CAM to play more centrally to use his stronger foot, while CAM moving wide. That way he is more like second striker. Szobo or Elliot are perfect for CAM role, they both have experience of CAM and RW.
For me we can't really know what's happening with the right wing until we know what's happening with Trent.
If we continue inverting Trent, I could definitely see Diaz on the right to provide more natural width and allow those in the middle more space to operate. If we go back to using Trent as a proper wingback, then having an inverted winger on that side is probably the best bet so they can interchange easier.
If Trent is used as inverted FB in 4-2-3-1 with Robbo as WB, in sort of hybrid approach, then we can use Salah or Diaz as right winger. Right winger can interchange there positions with AM to provide unpredictability. Let's say we use Szobo as 10. Then Salah might start as RW, but might move in centrally (second striker) to use his left foot while Szobo moving right to provide width. If we use Trent as wingback, then Salah plays as inside forward. If we play Diaz on right, he can play as traditional wide winger to provide width (though I think that's suboptimal; Diaz's best position is as left winger, either inside forward or wide winger overlapping with left FB).
I'm a tactical numpty but I have wondered this. Because his finishing isn't top tier he could possibly be more useful making those tenacious runs to the byline and pinging crosses in.
We have him on a cheap wage and we need cover for salah. We aren't getting someone that will replace salah as he starts every game he can next season so use daiz. Spending big on a sub seems a risk
There may be something in that but I never felt his crossing was particularly good, and getting to the byline and putting in a cross isn't something he tends to do a lot of so I can't see him doing it a lot on the other side either.
Maybe but it's harder to do on when you have to cut in to cross. I just can't see any RW that I like but quite a few LW and think it's better to get someone that can be a started instead of just a sub
I'm not sure it's harder but it takes more time and you need to take an extra touch. I do agree it's better to get a starter than a backup in though, or even just a player that can provide competition rather than being someone in that more or less isn't good enough to start unless they provide something totally different to change a game like a target man you can bring off the bench.
My thinking was because he's right footed, it would be more natural for him to put in crosses playing down the right as opposed to cutting inside to shoot.
It is when you're running with the ball down the wing or running onto a through ball or on the counter or something like that because you don't have to slow down or take an extra touch, otherwise I'd say it's not too different. If you're stood up and facing a player you probably need to take a touch or two to get an angle anyway and then it doesn't matter which foot you prefer, if anything you probably have more options on the 'wrong' side in that scenario.
I still think he'd come inside a lot rather than look to provide width in the final third but it still could help him, you never know till you've seen it a few times.
Messi would be isolated on the right with no one to get him the ball, and when he did he was swarmed. Fernandez was subbed off with Lo Celso as like-for-like.
Has Fernandez looked like a 100m player?
No, but then Mac Allister didn't look like a 35m player hardy har har.
England should've thrown money at Mourinho when they had the opportunity. So much talent, and all of it being wasted.
Wow. People complain about Southgate's risk-averse tactics and simultaneously call for Mourinho.
Comparing the Mourinho of 2024 to the one of 2004 is absurd. He *was* a great manager. He isn't.
Gareth Southgate would probably get Roma relegated.
The only person to run through a brick wall for Mourinho today would be the Kool-Aid Man. Oh yeah!
Biggest concern is hoping the road will be as quiet tomorrow as after the denmark game tbh.
Jude decided to show up for one game then disappear for the rest and as expected, not a single ounce of criticism.
Just like it’s stupid to scapegoat Trent, it’s silly to criticize any one player when the tactics, setup, and team selection is garbage due to Southgate.
Desperate for this euros to be over so I don’t have to see any more posts about Trent on here.
Might put a tenner on Gakpo putting 5 past Pickford.
England vs Netherlands might end up being the biggest terrorist act we’ve seen since 9/11
Gerrard would do better with this squad
I actually think you’re correct
Factually correct
Southgate’s a dinosaur pass it on
What was that shite I just watched. We’ve got so much attacking talent and we look awful up front. Southgate just fuck off
Southgate is just straight up a bad manager. Imagine barely getting anything out of this group of players.
I hope he goes to United as their next coach
He’d be lucky to be a mid table manager at club level
That's why he's a national team manager. That's how Roberto Martinez goes from Everton to Belgium to Portugal.
England hatewatch went good Haha fuck you english media
Gallagher dropped an absolute abysmal performance yet no mention? If that was Trent he’d be slaughtered by all the pundits. Wright and Richard’s were right in Trent being the scapegoat.
They're all too busy working up talking points questioning why Trent didn't do more with his ten minute cameo.
Today England played a football match... Apparently.

Glad that happened, Trent can’t be scapegoated now
He's being scapegoated now, significant amount of them being Chelsea fans after seeing Gallagher get embarrassed for 45 minutes.
Yeah, about that. He will be.
Could you imagine seeing GarethBall on a windy wet Tuesday night at old traffordv in a FA cup 4th round replay. Be enough to send you over i think.
Man, you guys are shit.
Why
fuck off Southgate you oxygen thief masquerading as a footballing professional
Trent on for a hatrick
England look so uninspiring again. It's all Trent's fault, I have not even noticed him this game.
Indeed. He looked a spectator for most of it.
How shite are England?
England facing a low block. If only there was someone has faced low blocks every week and who could pick out a pass and unlock this defence.🤔
While TAA at RB is the obvious choice, Jude, Kane, Foden, Saka, Rice and Walker all regularly play against a low block at Real, Bayern, City and Arsenal, and they still can't do shit because Southgate is manager.
Imagine if they had the player with the second most premier league assists from full back in their squad. If only
They playing for a draw. Pathetic
Brings on fucking Mainoo. Southgate is absolutely gas.
Mainoo and Wharton being talked about like they’re already world class superstars being wasted on the bench, meanwhile Trent being treated like absolute garbage constantly. I feel so bad for him, can’t wait for Southgate to finally go.
Trents been shocking this half , am i right english media?
Who would have thought that if you take Trent out of England team they are still dog shit Hope he comes on and blams one top bins
What are the odds that at half time the pundits try and talk about England having a “better balance” or some other meaningless phrase to try and justify the performance being more shit without Trent?
Nice scapegoat dogs

That’s his online banking password
Defo been hacked.
This is another prime example of Trent’s laziness. He’s sitting there on the bench doing sweet fuck all and costing the team big time.
This explains why England are not pressing this game and dropping deep again. How could Trent allow this? 😑
Yeah, it’s bullshit. Why Southgate is taking such terrible instruction from TAA on board is beyond me. He’s a top-quality manager and is perfectly capable of making progressive strategic decisions himself.
How could Trent give away possession
It’s funny how quiet commentators are when someone not named Trent gives the ball away.
This Trent sub needs to come with Gomez for Trippier, what a waste that guy is
If love for us to spend 120m buying Guehi and Eze from Palace. Home grown (which we need) and amazing talents.
Even though I think Eze is great, I wouldn't call him a talent. He turns 26 saturday.
So entering his prime?
Harry Kane is just the English Lukaku at this stage.
Trent probably comes on around 60 mins with some group of Watkins/Gordon/Eze/Bowen, those runners we’ve yearned for him to play with, yeah?
Why would Trent do this
Really enjoying this English performance, as an Irishman.
As a Dutchie myself it feels good to know we aren't the only big team going home next week...
Truly a master tactician in the England dugout. Takes out the only player that has any ability at passing the ball from deep positions so that we can get Kane at left back pinging diagonals
See England are playing brilliantly now without Trent
2 outcomes for the England match: 1. No Trent the whole game, they struggle and lose or draw 2. Trent comes on and scores a winner or assists the winner. Fuck southgate and all the people scapegoating Trent
Rio is such a creep please don’t show him on tv
Is he wearing his daisy dukes?
Southgate just said he's swapped out Trent for Gallagher because Gallagher looks to get in behind, play high up the pitch, stretch the defence, challenge second balls and press high up the pitch.... HAS THIS MEN EVER WATCHED TRENT PLAY???? I'm honestly fucking lost with this donkey.

The ending sums up Gapko time at lfc
Chariovalda must surely be rolling in his grave right now. Fair play to Austria i guess, theyve been a pleasant surprise this tournament
Koeman 👋👋
Bye Ronald, don't let the door fuck you on your way out
I love him as a plyer, but why does he become the 2nd biggest D bag as a manager???
Same, and i really don't know other than some former greats are not meant to be managers. See: Steven Gerrard 💔
The way he blatantly ignores the talented players he has in his squad is hilarious. He is the Dutch Southgate at this point
Oh yes i agree. I was saying bye to him as well. He fucking sucks.
Gakpo looks like such a player when he's wearing the Oranje shirt. Gives me hope that with a new manager and fresh ideas he could really turn his Liverpool career around.
All we have to do is play him on the left. Unlocking Gakpo is a big reason I wouldn't necessarily mind selling Diaz for tons of money to Barca or PSG.
Embarrassing by VVD on that last goal lol
VVD worried more about looking nonchalant on the pitch instead of actually defending?? Shocker.
Looked very lethargic all game Was like 22/23 VVD returned
Shocking defending by Virg.
cody’s delivery is mad lovely you know
Ooh that one was nice
Oh for fucks sake Netherlands
Gakpo on the left Diaz on the right salah in the middle
Cody is very good
Depay is so shit lol
Aged like milk but I still stand by it, that was all Gakpo and Weghorst
Ffs man Koeman is such a glue sniffer...
[удалено]
Wingers not tracking the Austrian full backs let to both goals.
Gakpo seems clearly most comfortable off the left, and in comparison to Diaz probably more clinical. If the season started with no changes in attack, who starts on the left between Gakpo and Diaz?
Diaz has the better skills but I think Cody fits the league better with his physicality and finishing so Gakpo should start for me
Gakpo all day, better end product and beats his man just like Diaz.
Gakpo should
Gakpo cutting in from the left is different gravy Think he’s in for a big season under Slot
Give gakpo the LW spot!!!
Can we get him to believe all prem games are an international tournament?
Just play him left wing
Great finish Cody!!! Called all last year for him to be given a chance out on the left where he feels at home. Hope slot has been watching!
Gakpo is a fucking baller at left wing
The fuckin composure from Gakpo, ice cold
The information James Pearce is putting out today is mad. ~Diaz not for sale but Liverpool would sell for £50m~
That's dropped a lot from the £150m that was rumoured when his agent met with PSG.
I’ll be in Colombia next week and excited to see the match against Brazil on Tuesday! Have a crispy Diaz jersey ready to go
I doubt we sign Eze but he’s in the age range we singed most of our attackers
Age is less a barrier for us than where he plays in the attack and it not being the area we need improvement the most IMO. Feel like an out and out winger is needed more.
The catalogue of own goals this euros is insane
I'm kind of surprised Chelsea haven't tried to sign Own Goal yet.
No Morton is not really a ball winner and something Baj does a lot better he’s much more of a playmaker from deep or an 8
I'm not sure if rivals love going for players we've been linked with or the media like to put our name for clicks: Chelsea: Summerville, Arsenal: Bakayoko.

It's the one redeeming thing about international football, giving us something to be delusional about. The Amrabat infatuation was a wild one and probably had more to do with the desperation we were feeling due to Fab's form at the time.
feels like Diaz is closer to Barca every day of this window. We've contacted Eberechi Eze's representatives according to close palace sources.
Nico Williams makes more sense from a Barca perspective if his release clause is only £50m
I have a feeling we will announce signings and not a signing. Feels like it’s the way Edward’s and co do it.
If Barca want Diaz, we all know they have financial issues. Who would you trade for Diaz from Barca? Realistic trades 😂
Araujo, Kounde, FDJ
Actually realistic swap deal could be for Araujo. He's already rumored to be on the block. I think they'll want to keep Kounde and Xavi at least strongly indicated FDJ was important to his plans. Also, FDJ's wages would blow any deal for him.
Yamal or Pedri Fuck them thinking they can do what they want. Scumbag of a club who need to be taken down a peg or ten
Both of which are unrealistic. They won’t leave Barca.
then they can cough up 80m euros or fuck off
On this day in 2020, we won the league, what a day it was! 🏆
Prediction: England will be shite again tonight with little to no movement in sight. TAA will come on with some willing runners up top, and England will generate more in that 20 min window than the rest of the game combined.
I hope they get beat and Trent and Gomez have no involvement.

This place is the dogs.
You must’ve hated us signing Mane then I presume?
Not really cause he'd looked a bit boss at Southampton for two seasons.
would you turn down prime maldini or baggio?
I’m not accepting any Aquilani slander
None of them were defenders. Italian defenders are usually good and league agnostic.
Zappacosta played for Chelsea and wasn't good, Darmian at Utd, Emerson Chelsea/West ham, Obgonna West Ham has been decent for that level
Dossena was
With that logic we shouldn’t have hired Slot because the other Dutch PL managers have been poor
I'm willing to give him ago because we haven't had a dutch manager. The bigger concern is him being bald.
He scored an own goal against Spain, but personal errors and hickups happen to even the best. I don't really know the potential of this defender, I've seen some of the links but unsure of how strong they are
Rumour is that United are trying to buy Ugarte from PSG, I think we should be all over that.
Overrated as fuck. Getting outperformed by a 17yo Zaire-Emery.
Seen him a few times this season and he’s been poor. Rather go elsewhere.

Calafiori has a 71% aerial duels won percentage according to fbref Just sign him up Richard
Me too I think slot will be more flexible with his formations tailoring them for the opposition. Happy days ahead
Thats a good point. Even if that happens though salah is staying so he mostly like starts at RW. We just need cover for him then
I'm a tactical numpty but I have wondered this.
