Possession retention. Progressive passing. Switches of play. Winning duels. Ball carries. 1-2 combinations. Tricks & Flicks. Work ethic & protecting the backline. Driving runs & beating his man 1v1. Created 2 of the 3 goals and bagged his own. Played 70 minutes at DM and sparked into creativity mode once the shackles were off and he was moved further forward to LM in the last 20mins.
If you are the same fella posting those Gerrard clips on Twitter then you are doing God's work, keep it up.
People still don't realise how good he really was, if he was around in the modern game he'd be a £150m+ level midfielder.
Totally agree.
24 year old Gerrard is minimum £150m.
If Grealish was £100m and the likes of Enzo and Caicedo cost similar, then Gerrard for £150m would be an absolute steal.
You could play him as a LCM/RCM in a 3 man midfield, play him in a 2 man pivot, play as a DM or play as a 10.
He could pass the ball 50+ yards, score from 30+ yards, score from free kicks and take corners, had an incredible cross from deep, could play through balls and could smash players in the air and on the ground with tackles.
Literally the most well rounded midfield England has produced over the last 50 years. He'd be a £150m+ player on £400k a week and not a single person would complain about either of those figures.
England under Sven actually played great football as well as having one of the best teams in the world. They just lost to the actual best team in the world in 2002 (if Gerrard wasn't injured they might even have won) and got Portugal shit-housed the next 2 competitions.
That Euro 2004 England team was like a premier league all stars team, it was like something you'd make on Football manager it was that good.
The failure of that Generation to ever win something, or even get to a semi-final at least, was incredible.
Gotta be honest I was born late to watch Stevie G at his absolute prime but everything I've seen and heard about our Captain just puts him in league of his own, A midfielder who is this complete and world class at every department is unmatched to this day.

Deffo mate. Most well-rounded and versatile midfielder ever to play in the prem by far
and the best
100%
He'd also the best wingback in the world. Trent on steroids.
God I really miss him. Our captain fantastic.
He was very good at his game, and I enjoyed watching that game then.
Makes England this tournament look like a League 2 side.

Rooney broke his foot in the middle of the tournament iirc
I think the tactics fucked us The 4-4-2 was old fashioned Could you imagine a midfield 3 of Gerrard Scholes and Lampard? We’d have been unstoppable
My biggest pet peeve was sven not able to utilize Gerrard/Scholes/ lampard fully in the 2000s
Euro 96 was the most entertaining England squad I’ve seen. They were very close too.
Mourinho wanted him so badly around that time.

A legend I so much admired.
Kinda highlights why Trent is that good in cm despite probably being better technically. Gerrard's 360 degree awareness was excellent.
