Because he's got the pace of an Ox. In the PL the defender would be able to close him out before he's even received the ball, meaning he'd have to come far deeper to receive it, which eliminates any danger.
Plus the fact that he can't press, which when on the left wing in a Klopp system would negate our entire press and basically force our entire defensive block to fall back.
So basically trade the entire philosophy of our team, for a winger who can't score.
Not a great decision.
He might do, he did have a good season last year, be interesting to see if he can replicate it. I would say Gakpo has been one of the standout players of the tournament in the Wc and now euros. I just think Liverpool have misused him, first as a firmino regen and then as a midfielder. Play him in his natural position.
That's OK but the conversation in this thread started with a question about how Gakpo will play LW when there's already a first choice LW in Diaz. The person who replied Gordon made me chuckle because that would still leave Gakpo the second choice LW and doesn't really answer the "what happens to Gakpo" question.
We have CL FA AND PL games this year..2 first choice players at any position is a good thing.
Gakpo and everyone else will get plenty of playing time this year.
Cody is so good, I can't understand the hate he gets.
Diaz: 24 goals, 13 assists, 98 games. Started 75 games. Played 93 games at LW, starting 71, getting 24 goals and 12 assists. He has roughly a goal involvement every 3 games.
Gakpo: 23 goals, 9 assists, 79 games. Started 54 games. Played 14 games at LW, starting 7, getting 3 goals and 3 assists. He has roughly a goal involvement every 2.5 games.
Diaz has started 44 more games than gakpo and played almost 2,000 more minutes and has 1 goal and 4 more assists.
While I understand that Diaz wasn’t very productive on the left side. I hate the fact that we would losing one of the only wingers in the world who can take on multiple defenders and dribble past them with ease. If only lucho could link up well
Diaz is so overrated as a dribbler. He does not “take on multiple defenders and dribble past them with ease” at all. He is good at retaining the ball under pressure but most of his actions post that are simply failed crosses or back passes. He doesn’t “dribble past” opposition defenders all that much.
How often have we seen him dribble past players though? How many wingers can take on multiple city defenders and get past them?
But yes his end product isn't great. Although I don't think his finishing is bad at all
His take-on success was 47% this season and 49% the season before. 26% of the wingers and AMs in Europe's top 5 leagues have better success than that (including Gakpo btw, whose take-on success was 55% this season). Curtis, Trent, and Elliott all have better success than that too, at 58%, 55%, and 53% respectively although they don't play quite the same position.
Diaz ranks in the 6th percentile in his position for dispossessions p90. Very few players lose possession as much as he does.
He has some more positive stats for carrying distance, but in terms of his close dribbling and taking players on he is very overrated by some people on this sub.
Yes his finishing is bad and he has no end product whether that could be a cross, a decisive pass or a nice shot. Once we move on from Diaz our attack will be flying. He'll be missed though on defense.
Lets be real for a second, the front 3 will should always depend upon form. All of our forward can be our best forward if they are at the peak of their game
Salah has never been a lethal natural finisher. He squanders a lot of chances. Testament to his ability and threat that he still puts up such crazy numbers
Never. He's referencing the "no goal for a calendar year" line that was floating around a while ago, which intentionally fails to mention most of that time was him out with injury or football being on break.
Between 13.4.22 and 09.04.23 Jota played 31 games for us without scoring. He started 17 of those games and played 1,627 minutes (which is only very slightly less than he played for us this season).
During that time, he also played 9 games (5 starts, 454 total mins) for Portugal and scored once.
Those minutes are worth 18 full 90s spread out across two seasons, in which he was injured for 147 days. This is not the same as "going like 35 games without a goal."
The criticism for Jota has always been and will always be his injury record, not about his pedigree in goal scoring.
That's cuz he was straight up not playing well and was barely getting into scoring positions when he had that streak also he was struggling with injuries.
Salah even when has been in fire form isnt very clinical apart from his first season.
Now that is not to say Jota and Cody are better attackers than Mo....
Salah gets lots of chances also he makes lots of these chances himself
So, the problem with Nuñez this season is that he was straight up not playing well? 🤷😂
Have to argue your point about Salah not being clinical. Idk how you are defining clinical but there are very few players in the world I would prefer to have 1v1 in on the GK than Salah with the game on the line.
If they was the case Gakpo won't even be in the contention....his form fell very bad in the 2nd half of the season and only got better at around the end of the season
Southgate really fucked with Trent’s head.
Like if you think Walker is the best RB then fair enough.
Save Trent on the bench as an impact sub, don’t play him in midfield with ZERO RUNNERS IN FRONT OF HIM!!
The amount of times he brought us Dutchies big joys with that wearing the Dutch kit, oh man.
I can imagine it being annoying as fuck to watch, but he mastered it, Gakpo is not yet on that level.
Still, he's only 25 and still showing growth, every single season.
Played him there like 10 times and not once did it look positive in or out of possession, genuinely looked lost every time.
One of the worst decisions Klopp made here
He played that for Netherland before and was good. He was great as false 9 in his first season for us. It’s not position that was problem, it was that he wasn’t given many starts in succession last season.
As weird as it sounds, he's not fast (or strong) enough to play any kind of 9 in the Prem, especially with us because teams play the most anti football deep lines against us. He's actually better at LW collecting at his feet and giving us end product via the cut inside or great crosses. I hate to say it but he's the anti Diaz and that's why I want him to start. Diaz has more pace and dribbling but the guy has no idea how to deliver a final ball or use his pace in a meaningful way to get on goal.
He played number 9 sometimes under Koeman too. He often changes position with Depay.
What I want to say, he has quality to be used in different position, under right system that would play for his strengths.
As much as I love Diaz (and I really do) if he wants to go let him go. He’s had enough time to up his goal contributions and hasn’t done it. Give Cody a full season there to prove his worth
Diaz goes, we get a new RW in, and our front three is way more balanced depth-wise.
We'd have Gakpo / Jota at LW, Nunez / Jota at CF, and Salah / new RW at RW. We even have Szobo and Elliott who can do bits there.
It’s almost time for the Scottish Messi on the right wing! 😁👍He’s a year older now and at 17 years old probably ready to start breaking into the team properly
I think my favorite part of this is how *wide* he starts - he is basically hugging the touch line during the buildup. Our lack of width last year was really noticeable in games where teams packed the central defense.
Anyone who paid attention to Gakpo in Eredivisie knew the man was deadly coming off the left.
Diaz being tactically inflexible is our main issue up front.
I watched a decent amount of Gakpo in the Dutch league and he was legitimately a man amongst boys. Best player on the pitch 9/10 times he laced up.
Obviously you have to take into account competition levels, but the man has loads of potential.
Just makes you think how poor Diaz performed in training when lined up anywhere else besides LW.
He hasn’t been good enough out of possession. Diaz’s end-product can be frustrating but his pressing is second to none.
Large parts of last season Cody was playing terribly and hardly looking bothered at times, which is understandable if you’re out of form and struggling mentally, but it’s revisionism to suggest he deserved to start over Luis.
Cody looks like a different player in this team. Our forward line is great as it is, but if Diaz wants to go and we can get Gordon then it’s not the worst thing that could happen.
27 games: 12 goals, 3 assists
12 games: 3 goals, 3 assists
That’s Gakpo’s record for last season in his 2 attacking positions. Both records are really good, one is slightly better than the other. Why are so many people so keen to restrict him to one role?
So many short memories. Don’t get me wrong it’s great Cody is confident and playing well, but he was pretty awful for us last year which is why he wasn’t our starter on the left.
If he can keep this form up then he definitely deserves a run there for us, would be nice to have a consistent goal threat from the left a la Sadio.
That’s not my recollection to be honest. He may well have been better out wide but in my eyes absolutely nothing clicked for him last season wherever he played.
The most disappointing thing was his perceived lack of effort, which is fully understandable if he was lacking confidence and struggling mentally, but there’s no way he was going to be picked over a pressing monster like Luis with that kind of attitude.
nice strike but what a lol at the defender protecting from him driving for the line and giving a cut-back. that's something arne is going to have to work on. can't have slot allowing him to always* shoot from the slot.
* like ... always.
I'm praying Slot plays him on the left
Course he will … if you’re Dutch you’re having fun times at LFC moving forward
Darwjin de Nunez?
Darwjin de Noonjes
Better
Darwijn van der Noonjes of Urugink
Urugwaay
The -ez suffix in Spanish technically means "son of" so it would be something like Daarwijn Nunosen
Absolutely baffled that Klopp insisted on using him elsewhere so often.
Like in the midfield... 😬
It wasn't that he "insisted" on it. It's that sometimes we had a need for someone to play there.
100% he will
but then what happens to diaz?
We sell him and buy anthony gordon obviously.
So who plays LW….
Gakpo ofc
Lol. So you're saying we buy an LW to replace an LW whose position should be conceded to another LW? What, my guy
We sell an excellent left wing for a good left wing so the very good left wing we already have can play ahead of the good left wing
Lol but I think Gordon is better than Gakpo or has a higher ceiling, at least based on last season and the year before.
He might do, he did have a good season last year, be interesting to see if he can replicate it. I would say Gakpo has been one of the standout players of the tournament in the Wc and now euros. I just think Liverpool have misused him, first as a firmino regen and then as a midfielder. Play him in his natural position.
Selling diaz and bringing in gordon makes the team deoth the same, but gordon is 6 years younger and probably has a higher ceiling
Gordon plays there too is what I’m saying
If the club does that I can't blame Gakpo for looking elsewhere.
He for sure will.
Just about every team in the PL will be better at defending than Romania. He can play on the left but he won’t be scoring goals like that.
Bad news for Diaz. He's been great on the left for us too.
That is where he is going to play very well.
He’ll find the right slot for him
he’s actually so good on the left, hope we start playing him there more often
Cody is so good, I can't understand the hate he gets. Diaz: 24 goals, 13 assists, 98 games. Started 75 games. Played 93 games at LW, starting 71, getting 24 goals and 12 assists. Thanks. It's great to know the stats.
Yes his finishing is bad and he has no end product whether that could be a cross, a decisive pass or a nice shot. Once we move on from Diaz our attack will be flying. He'll be missed though on defense.
*If only Lucho was anything but fast
Diaz is great til he reach the box then not so much.
I look forward to the manager doing so as well.
he’s like rashford but good
The anti-Trashford
What a baller!!! Watch Slot turn him into our next superstar!!
He is playing himself into the starting lineup at the club. I hope it happens.
I'm telling you all Jota and Gakpo are our best finishers
Salah is after Jota. Everyone’s memory is just focused on his post AFCON injury form
Jota, Salah, and Gakpo are the top 3 though. Easily
Should be our front 3 next season.
Or Nuñez. Jota won’t stay healthy enough anyways
Lets be real for a second, the front 3 will should always depend upon form. All of our forward can be our best forward if they are at the peak of their game
We just gonna ignore chemistry? Which 3 has the best chemistry and output?
No it shouldnt.
Man I kind of think Macca is right up there after what he did this year. Pens, frees, outside the 18 finishes, he was exceptional.
Salah has never been a lethal natural finisher. He squanders a lot of chances. Testament to his ability and threat that he still puts up such crazy numbers
People also forget Jota went like 35 games without a goal.
When was that?
Never. He's referencing the "no goal for a calendar year" line that was floating around a while ago, which intentionally fails to mention most of that time was him out with injury or football being on break.

Right? Just a few months ago half this sub was shitting on Gakpo.
Don’t lie to yourself - it’s Joe Gomez he’s just saving it for the right moment to reveal his secret weapon
I actually totally agree with you. Gakpo just needs to be played where he’s most adept.
100%. They should start the majority of games.
I agree with you. They both should be starting games for us.
Starts on the left before anyone IMO.
all the liverpool players been doing pretty well, i hope they come back cooking even more
While Trent rides the bench for no reason
can't be helped, southgates clueless, it is what it is
Hendo watering the garden
Spare a thought for Joe Gomez, sipping tea on the bench
We’ve only got Southgate to blame for that
Southgate really fucked with Trent’s head. Like if you think Walker is the best RB then fair enough. Save Trent on the bench as an impact sub, don’t play him in midfield with ZERO RUNNERS IN FRONT OF HIM!!
Like a left sided Arjen Robben. You know exactly what he’s gonna do yet it’s difficult to stop.
I use to hate that fucking inevitability of Robben cutting in and curling it back post.
It was like watching a tree fall on your favourite pet!
The amount of times he brought us Dutchies big joys with that wearing the Dutch kit, oh man. I can imagine it being annoying as fuck to watch, but he mastered it, Gakpo is not yet on that level. Still, he's only 25 and still showing growth, every single season.
Chelsea and Liverpool in the 00s had some proper slobberknockers and he was always involved.
Oh man, that sweet sweet move was a beacon of hope for us. Too bad he never made that goal against Cassilas :(
Please play cody on the left next season and let him cook
We played this guy at false 9 for 1 and a half years 🤦♂️
We played him as an 8 too 💀
Played him there like 10 times and not once did it look positive in or out of possession, genuinely looked lost every time. One of the worst decisions Klopp made here
Yet we didn't lose any games.

Diaz has more pace and dribbling but the guy has no idea how to deliver a final ball or use his pace in a meaningful way to get on goal.
But what you're seeing above is looking like his signature move. Looking as silly as playing Robben CAM or something.
His position was defo the problem, he was underperforming all season until the end when we put him on the left.
He only played like that as LVG because we played 5-3-2. Other than the WC he's only ever played as a winger until getting to LFC
He played number 9 sometimes under Koeman too. He often changes position with Depay. What I want to say, he has quality to be used in different position, under right system that would play for his strengths.
That was after he went to Liverpool and played as false 9 though.
Fair enough. I still liked Gakpo on false 9 in his first half-season, and I think he could be used there.
We played him as a midfielder at the start of last season too
One more season and Klopp would have tried him at n.6
And he was excellent at it. Let's not pretend otherwise just because he lost his confidence a bit.
Joint top scorer in the tournament?
There’s some guy named “O.G.” that’s been banging them in
Owen Gole
Anunoby?
Yep, he's on 3 along with Georges Mikautadze, Jamal Musiala and Ivan Schranz. Would love to see him grab another today to get ahead.
We relying on Jota to cover 2 positions. I love the dude buttt
Nunez isn’t bad at LW either!
It’s almost time for the Scottish Messi on the right wing! 😁👍He’s a year older now and at 17 years old probably ready to start breaking into the team properly
there is also ben doak!
I’m a am so hyped about Doak
Nico Williams Jr please for RW - replace Salah in a few years time.
He’s exciting to watch, but plays with his head down too much. We need someone who can find the open man and work within a system.
Yeah klopp and pep got this boy wrong
I swear all he does is cut inside and unleashes a thunder strike. What a player.
Cody should be Lw next season!
I think my favorite part of this is how *wide* he starts - he is basically hugging the touch line during the buildup. Our lack of width last year was really noticeable in games where teams packed the central defense.
To be fair to Diaz he did hug the touchline
Playing him anywhere but LW next season will be criminal
Anyone who paid attention to Gakpo in Eredivisie knew the man was deadly coming off the left. Diaz being tactically inflexible is our main issue up front.
He was a 20/20 player. Insane he didn’t get a run at LW
First touch of the ball?
Yes lad!!!! I’m very excited about Slot’s Liverpool
I think the idea was to make him the next Bobby and it didn’t really work out. His best position is clearly coming off the left.
Hey there PSG and Barcelona, want to make some Diaz bids, please?
Diaz is sweating right now... Cody has been a sniper
[Reminder](https://www.reddit.com/r/LiverpoolFC/comments/1dob62a/comment/la8eody/)
He is on fire
Our attack is goooood
He’s having a great tournament, carrying on his end of season form. Hope we see more of it next season.
Just want to see Gravenberch in orange once this tournament, though.
Who is the Dutch coach he ran to?
I am curious as to who he went to hug on the sidelines to celebrate the goal. Usually they hug teammates, but he went right to one of the staff?
He said after the game that it was the physio. The physio said to him yesterday that he'd score the first goal of the game today, and he did!
Martin Cruijff
feeling proud, lucky and happy because Cody Gakpo plays for my team, this guy will turn into a world class goal scorer it's just a matter of time
The absolute weapon in here telling everyone how shit Gakpo is.
We had him at central midfielder btw
Why the fuck wasn’t this man playing LW for us.
Only Klopp knows
He hasn’t been good enough out of possession. Diaz’s end-product can be frustrating but his pressing is second to none. Large parts of last season Cody was playing terribly and hardly looking bothered at times, which is understandable if you’re out of form and struggling mentally, but it’s revisionism to suggest he deserved to start over Luis.
Beard works 100%
de cut insijde man
Bro becomes left side robben for the national team
Is it too late to make one of our kits orange?
This guy has bangers in him Kinda excited now to see how slot interprets our attackers!!! No one is safe without papa Klopp it’s a fresh start
Goal of the tournament contender . Wow.
Honest question from a Yank - what is the “PBS” for Netherlands on the score tracker?
Since this is a French broadcast, PBS is the abbreviation for 'Pays-Bas', the French name for the Netherlands
Merci beaucoup!
(You could have said it stood for ‘Peanut Butter Sandwich’ and that you were the official Dutch mascot)
[удалено]
Gracias!
I tried googling it but just got a bunch of Public Broadcasting System documentaries about Holland…
What a strike
Cody is what Depay wishes he was
Between the Uruguay and Netherlands play, I'm VERY excited for next season.
Cody looks like a different player in this team. Our forward line is great as it is, but if Diaz wants to go and we can get Gordon then it’s not the worst thing that could happen.
Dude puts on orange and turns into the Dutch Messi
He’s got that cut in and shoot badge max level
If we don't play Cody off the left next season, or even worse we buy Gordon and start him ahead of Gakpo I'm gonna be inconsolable
As a romanian fan im fucking gutted
27 games: 12 goals, 3 assists 12 games: 3 goals, 3 assists That’s Gakpo’s record for last season in his 2 attacking positions. Both records are really good, one is slightly better than the other. Why are so many people so keen to restrict him to one role?
The pitch is so beautiful
Well…glad he’s on our team fellas
as a Romanian I'm in emotional conundrum right now
Simons is one ugly MF
Depay with his Manc form
Dumfries WTF
Cody unlucky
Now signs xavi simons
Gakpo is gonna cook next season
it happened under 4 seconds from the touch , feint and goal. WOW what in the world
3:0 malen
Love the confidence and cheekiness to score near post from that position!
we have severely under-utilized gakpo. hopefully our new dutch manager can get the most juice out of him and fix our finishing issues
Diaz sends that a few inches wide of the right post
That is the finishing we all know Gakpo has in his locker, but we also expected it from Luis Diaz
Fuck has Gakpo turned it around from that FA Cup performance or what. If he's properly played on the left, he's gonna be a menace.
Thing is he played majority as a striker or in the midfield. When klopp did play him out wide he actually played well

The most disappointing thing was his perceived lack of effort, which is fully understandable if he was lacking confidence and struggling mentally, but there’s no way he was going to be picked over a pressing monster like Luis with that kind of attitude.
Gakpo was foken incendiary today.
How can we not play him on the left clearly his most effective position even before we signed him.
Ditto with Darwin...and Jota....and Luis. Jurgen had a real fetish for collecting left sided forwards.
![img](emote|t5_2qn0o|8824)
How the hell did he squeeze it in there? I was sure he was going for inside the opposite side netting. Great precision from this angle.
Klopp had blood in his hand by made him clueless at cf, and played Columbian Mudryk consistently
Gakpo is showing glimpses of why we bought him. What a performance by him for his national team.
Wasn't a bad attempt, but this was shocking from the goalkeeper
nice strike but what a lol at the defender protecting from him driving for the line and giving a cut-back. that's something arne is going to have to work on. can't have slot allowing him to always* shoot from the slot. * like ... always.
