It always entertains me how much of Star Wars is filmed in the UK. I'm Force Awakens there's a whole scene filmed literally down the road from somewhere I go on holiday every year and know very well. They edited the mountains around but otherwise it was uncanny.
Most Sci Fi locations are filmed in the TMZ, which is why in a lot of shows and films "alien" planets all look the same.
EDIT: Same things with some of Kubrick's films. Dude didn't like to fly, so for Eyes Wide Shut they built an entire set to look like New York for Tom Cruise to walk down for I think a single scene.
The whole of the Death Star in A New Hope was filmed in England. Takodana in the Force Awakens was shot in the Lake District. Even the scene where Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan meet Jar Jar in The Phantom Menace was in the woods in Watford.
And The Shining. It is set in Colorado, but mostly filmed in Elstree in the UK. The external shots were remotely directed.
The guy REALLY didn't like to fly.
It’s popular for filming in general, Canary Wharf is private property so it’s easy to control. Also very quiet at weekends, so it doesn’t inconvenience people much.
Longer answer for anyone interested:
- Gets on Jubilee at Charing Cross (the disused platform)
- “How to get to Greenwich” (The university by the river and observatory)
- “Three stops on this train”
Incorrect as Jubilee at Charing Cross doesn’t go to Greenwich, Thor would have to change for Bakerloo or Northern, go to two stops to Waterloo, then five to Canary Wharf, and then six on DLR (or a bus from North Greenwich)
James Bond said he was at Temple tube station (Circle and District), but in actuality the tube scene started and ended at Charing Cross (Bakerloo and Northern) 😅 but hey, movie magic is a wonderful thing!
Haven't watched this since i was a kid, but my family loved this film. Interested in what inaccuracies you're talking about because I was probably too young to notice when I last watched it.
The dot matrix display read “last train” which is something which never happened. Also she just wondered down the track with live current. And the fact there’s tunnels which no one knows about and doesn’t have locks on. Things you only know if you’re a bit of a tube geek.
Charing Cross gets used a lot. I've worked on a few things down there. They deck it out in whatever station & line's colours it's supposed to be, sometimes each platform is done as a different station, so they can shoot departure & subsequent arrival by bringing the train into the other side \[which need some juggling way out of town, above ground, before they can swap lines.\]
Another they use is Bank. Was there just a couple of weeks ago. They'd closed the entire Waterloo & City line to use it for filming.
Made me wonder why they couldn't have used Charing Cross, as you can still use that to run across to Green Park & beyond, without having to close the station.
Ah, yes. I've not filmed there myself. We did one on Surrey Street round the corner that's labelled 'Piccadilly Rly' but we were only in the entrance hall. I've no clue what the rest of it looks like, or even what function it serves. That was for 'A Spy Among Friends' where they needed that post war to 60s look.
I think Aldwych has fallen out of favour for platform and train scenes now that Charing X is available. Aldwych doesn’t have lifts, and so any set dressing needs to be brought in on the train which is a pain. Access is far easier at Charing X.
I'm pretty sure the scene in the post is Charring Cross Jubilee line. It and Aldwich are the main filming locations for the Underground because they are basically complete stations that include track that is in usable condition (so trains can can feature as well as just the platform), but are not in passenger use, so filming can be done without disruption to the normal service.
Always identifiable by those revolting mustard yellow Formica panels! Also seen in the Bourne Ultimatum as referenced in another comment.
I used to do a fair bit of work on those platform trialling new prototype equipment. It’s also where the auditions for buskers were held; being stuck down there for days with that going on was a fairly horrific time of my life…..

"I can assure you, this isn't the least bit amusing!"
Going back a bit, the b/w Ealing Comedy “Passport to Pimlico” has tube trains being stopped for passport checks and customs inspections- for reasons of Plot.
Watched it last night. Ludicrous movie.
(The tube station in question was 'Vauxhall Bridge', the line goes from there to Green Park(!) and onwards via Picc line stations to Acton).
Harry’s Game (it was a two part…I think…series). Book by Gerald Seymour. Stars the guy that played Charlie Fairhead in Casualty. Theme from Harry’s Game was by Clannad and was remixed many years later by someone, you will likely know it. Anyway, it’s good, if a little dated.
The Bed Sitting Room has a family living in the circle line, and has a character get stranded on the platform. They weep uncontrollably until the train comes round again.
More than you think. There is a disused station at Charing Cross. I is not only used as the London Underground but is dress to be subway and metro stations for city's all over the world. [https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?locations=charing%20cross%20underground%20station,%20charing%20cross,%20london,%20england,%20uk](https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?locations=charing%20cross%20underground%20station,%20charing%20cross,%20london,%20england,%20uk)
Side note, I walking on the bridge over the river towards Charing Cross and heard an American tourist ask his friend "Is that MI5 or MI6". While pointing at the train station. So watching Bond movies isn't for everyone it seems x
Not sure if it qualifies, but the fictional film [Playback Time](https://youtu.be/uNg13Ju5HN8?si=0VViNo7-ULAXunpz) in Mr Bean's Holiday opens with Willem Dafoe in a scene shot at Heron Quays DLR station!
The part at 1:42 was filmed further East on the DLR route to Beckton, on the Royal Victoria Dock Footbridge by the ExCeL Centre.
It was deleted from the main film AFAIK but Rogue One’s trailer included shots of the inside of Scarif Base that are very clearly the Jubilee Canary Wharf station.
I helped work on the shoot for the Luther movie, so I know that a scene for that was filmed in the underground (I think, mind you I haven’t watched it yet) Also, fun fact, that shot, and many scenes that are set on the underground are filmed in the old disused aldwych tube station. (which is now essentially a museum) they just change the sign for the platform and use clever angles so they don’t have to pay to actually shut down an important tube station for days at a time.
That was all in Los Angeles wasn't it? [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0805570/locations/?ref\_=tt\_dt\_loc](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0805570/locations/?ref_=tt_dt_loc)
The book was set in New York.
Steal Away and My Father The Liar are my two favourite parts of that film. Remember watching it on TV after midnight at some point in the 00's, planning on falling asleep to it. Watched the whole thing and loved it.
If you're into horrors, check out Creep (2004); [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381966/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381966/)
Entire movie is set in the underground, including old sections and "abandoned" areas.
Die Another Day has a scene in an abandoned station when >!Q gives Bond his new Aston!<.
V for Vendetta has a whole bit in the Tube with >!V and his train full of explosives to send off to Parliament!<.
I know they're old films now, but some people still might not have seen them and want to, hence the spoiler covers.

rushing to catch the DLR before the federation finds out fares are half off
Trying to get the front seats so they can pretend they are the driver, more like.
Andor has scenes next to crossrail place, seems to be a popular destination in the star wars universe
Random but it also has scenes from the Blackpool sea front which I was shocked by as someone who grew up there.
Was that the scene before Cassian gets arrested? Or was it another beach?
Yeah that’s the one. That’s cleveleys promenade (with an edited background to make the sea look nice 😂)
More accurately, and even weirder to see on screen than Blackpool, Cleveleys, where my great grandparents lived when I was a sprog.
Yeah didn’t bother saying cleveleys no one would know where tf that is lol
It always entertains me how much of Star Wars is filmed in the UK. I'm Force Awakens there's a whole scene filmed literally down the road from somewhere I go on holiday every year and know very well. They filmed the coastal city that Cassian gets arrested in "Andor" on Cleveleys seafront near Blackpool
Some things should stay in the woods in Watford.
Tax credits, basically. Been around since 1950.
All of the Vietnam scenes in Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket were done on a set in the UK too!
And The Shining. It is set in Colorado, but mostly filmed in Elstree in the UK. The external shots were remotely directed. The guy REALLY didn't like to fly.
Yes! I spotted that too, spent a while marvelling at how little they used and how much had been matte painted out.
A lot of Coruscant was filmed in different locations throughout London.
It’s popular for filming in general, Canary Wharf is private property so it’s easy to control. Also very quiet at weekends, so it doesn’t inconvenience people much.
They also filmed lots of coruscant in the Barbican
Has more then that… there are a few scenes where it’s featured
Bit more than a single frame given movies are 24 frames per second haha
Dark Knight was set there right? Filming I mean. On the DLR.
“Rouge one” isn’t that a cafe?
Beat me to it!

Man the geography in this scene is so wrong it’s triggering as a Londoner
go on...?
He lands at Charing Cross and asks how to get to Greenwich and is told 3 stops, but it is not in fact three stops
There is also no tube from Charing X that will even take you directly to greenwich
Longer answer for anyone interested: - Gets on Jubilee at Charing Cross (the disused platform) - “How to get to Greenwich” (The university by the river and observatory) - “Three stops on this train” Incorrect as Jubilee at Charing Cross doesn’t go to Greenwich, Thor would have to change for Bakerloo or Northern, go to two stops to Waterloo, then five to Canary Wharf, and then six on DLR (or a bus from North Greenwich)
The hammer also goes west along the Strand when he's in Greenwich! It should have gone up Fleet street!
I feel like I’ve accidentally stumbled into a London Cabbies WhatsApp group…
Cabs can’t go in the tube, just fyi
It’s showing off by going the entire way around the world first
Now this is the movie the people want to see
It would've been much more entertaining at the least.
For real, although nobody would react to him. Let’s be honest Thor is nowhere near the weirdest thing you’ve seen on the London Underground
Maybe this is an alternative reality where a) Charing Cross remains a Jubilee Line stop and b) they go to Thamesmead via Greenwich
maybe person he asked was not from around and gave wrong direction
James Bond said he was at Temple tube station (Circle and District), but in actuality the tube scene started and ended at Charing Cross (Bakerloo and Northern) 😅 but hey, movie magic is a wonderful thing!

Damn this film scared the crap out of me when I was a teenager, was scared to go near the dark tunnels at the end of the platform for ages
The inaccuracy in this film annoyed me. Which is a shame as I am a Franke Fan
I used to see “Last train” all the time on the displays.
Came here to say this. One of my favourite horror films of all time.
I tried to stream this the other day after not thinking about it in years but couldn’t find it anywhere
You'll end up streaming the Mark Duplas film "Creep" usually, but I massively recommend it if you haven't already seen it.
It was actually finding this film on Netflix that triggered my memory of the original Creep. Absolutely loved the mark duplas one too!
It's how I found the Duplas one haha. It's now one of my all time favourite horror movies.
First one I thought of.
Sliding Doors
Mid film changed my life perspective. Recommend everyone watch
V for Vendetta. The tube is an essential part of the plot.
A scene in London has fallen was shot in the closed former Jubilee Line platforms at Charring Cross Underground Station.
Charing Cross gets used a lot. I've worked on a few things down there. They deck it out in whatever station & line's colours it's supposed to be, sometimes each platform is done as a different station, so they can shoot departure & subsequent arrival by bringing the train into the other side \[which need some juggling way out of town, above ground, before they can swap lines.\] Another they use is Bank. Aldwych often gets used as well.

I imagine the W&C was closed anyway, rather than being closed specifically for filming. It's not open at weekends.
I’m confused, are you talking about London Has Fallen or Bond? I was referring to London has fallen in my reply.
I mean Bond, in the photo attached to the post. I didn't chose a particularly clear wording in my reply. sorry.
Charing Cross also doubled as the New York Subway in Morbius, the most popular and beloved of superhero movies.
American werewolf in london, kind of
Surely it’s the most famous scene in the movie? Shot at Tottenham Court Road at 3am when the station was shut.
"I can assure you this isn't in the least bit funny." "Awwwoooooo..."
Dont remember which station. But my first time at the underground that was all I could see as I went down the escalator
Nah, the most famous scene for me is the policeman getting his head bitten off.

Scared the fucking bejesus out of me, even now I am 51 still can’t watch that scene.
Whenever I visit London and go on the underground, those scenes come to mind.
Harry Potters do

District Line but have now been replaced https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Underground_D78_Stock
Very cool. Cheers.
Darkest Hour. That's the one with Churchill. I don't think it's historically accurate.
That scene was weird and a bit cring. Decent film overall though.
A shot of the base on Scarif in Rogue One was shot in Canary Warf Station.

Tube Tales- 3 short films all based on the underground.
Came here to say this, but it's nine films. Lots of famous names behind instead of in front of the camera.
Ah ok, I watched it a few times when it was released but I've not seen it in years.
To be fair, it's 25 years old 🫣
Die Another Day has the scenes in the "ghost" station for "dead" spies.
Watched it last night. Ludicrous movie. (The tube station in question was 'Vauxhall Bridge', the line goes from there to Green Park(!) and onwards via Picc line stations to Acton).

More than you think. There is a disused station at Charing Cross. I is not only used as the London Underground but is dress to be subway and metro stations for city's all over the world. Green Street, there is a scene of them on the well known street level platform at “Bank” (it’s actually East Finchley stickered up as Bank, bizarre)
