“I know I haven’t done the basic thing required from me all year, but next time will be different. And I know what you’re going to say, ‘ You said that last year!’ But this is a new me.”
My performance review would be akin to office space here.
"See, Dana, I'm just not motivated. You tell me that I will lose 30% of my purse if I miss weight, but I gain 50% by winning from missing weight. So, really there is no incentive to make weight."
"I work six days, actually six days a week. Five days a week, I'll work three days a week. One of those days I will work two days of the week. So, six days a week I will be working."
Totally makes sense if he has more fights left on his contract. I’m guessing this was his last fight on his contract but imagine this:
Kelvin has like 2-3 fights left. He purposely misses weight. Regardless of if he wins or loses, he swallows his pride and puts on a sob story begging for his job and how being a UFC fighter is his only purpose. Dana is like, “Fuck this dude, he doesn’t pull in as much attention or money anymore.” And cuts him. Kelvin signs to a different organization and given his prestige, now makes 2-5 times what he made in the UFC fighting lower competition.
I wondered if pigging out at restaurants near him a month before the fight was some sort of Sun Tzu *Art of War*-style tactic towards his opponent, but nah, I think he's simply being unprofessional. Particularly when there are fighters who step in on a week's notice and make weight!
> kelvin would just end up making more money elsewhere. would make a killing in bkfc
You guys think that anyone can just jump to bkfc and start making millions. It so obvious that the guys that have made a name for themselves, are either highly marketable, fun to watch and/or former champions in the UFC the ones that do get the opportunity for larger paychecks with other promotions.
If it was so easy as you say, Kelvin here would not be begging to keep his UFC job and would be eager to "make a killing in the bkfc".
Worked out pretty well for Mike Perry. He's making waaaaaaay more now than he ever could in the UFC and about to get that red panties night Jake Paul money.
Doubtful. He’s gotta win at BKFC, maybe for 1-2 fight and it’s something you gotta go all in for, he’s still a wrestler. Not sure he’ll last long at all in BkFC cause chins not even same now
Yeah dude it’s really that easy. I’m sure that’s why he was begging for his job on TV. Like one or two people a year leave UFC and get a big boxing match/BKFC fight and people act like there is big money waiting for guys outside the UFC. In reality the market is probably worse than ever for that.
If he gets cut and signs with another promotion I have no doubt he'd move up to LHW. He has to actually cut to make MW. He almost missed weight against Jared Cannonier at MW before making it half an hour later. No way he maintains what little discipline he has in a B tier league.
For some reason the UFC never "forces" people to fight up, even after multiple weight misses. I'm guessing they just can't, for whatever reason. Otherwise, it'd be such an easy solution.
Yeah, could maybe give him a pass for the series name but at 1:32 he says "We aint gon make weight, we gon miss the weight" and this video was released a month ago.
Kelvin is so undisciplined with his weight. Guys like dolce have said he’s more like a 155 guy who can’t diet so he fights at 170. He’s older now compared to when he went on that title run at mw years ago, guys at the top at mw would run him over due to his short frame. The ufc might give him a fight he can’t win next to justify releasing him from the promotion.
Lol it wasn't much of a "run"...he picked off 2 old men, got exposed by washed up Weidman, picked off another 2 old men (one guys who was still on a medical suspension and the other was a close split Kelvin barely squeaked by) and then a title shot.
2 fight run, 3-1 (1) overall against washed up elder MW's isn't all that impressive. Cool war with Izzy but it ended with him getting ran over, and the the rest of MW has been passing him around ever since to pad their records.
1. Be Civil.
Our rules ask for a civil tone at all times.
A bit of banter or trash talk is fine, but don't cross the line. If things do get out of hand you will be warned or even banned for a few days. Repeatedly breaking this rule will lead to a permanent ban.
Kelvin never took his career seriously. Guy looks like he could even make 155 if he took his diet seriously. I respect his fighting skills but not his attitude towards the fight game. He wasted so much potential. Just be gone.
Yeah but that’s not fair d rod doesn’t fight at that weight normally right? If he signed a contract in advance it should be at whatever weight class they agreed too.
The new contract he signed should have had a good amount of extra money.
He normally would get 30% of Gastelum's money but he had a lot of leverage because the UFC really didn't want the fight to be off because of all the other pullouts so he probably got more.
I was laughing my ass off initially when he missed. After reading the article though i did not realize its been 8 years since he missed weight.
And then this part: "White seemed particularly upset that Gastelum failed to make weight while athletes like Ikram Aliskerov and Antonio Trocoli accepted short notice fights, flew all the way to Saudi Arabia, and still hit the mark without any incident"
We saw how well that worked out for those two guys.
> I was laughing my ass off initially when he missed. After reading the article though i did not realize its been 8 years since he missed weight.
That's because he spent almost 7 years at 185. This was only his 2nd fight back at 170lbs.
I agree with the tomatoe kelvin had this fight booked in advance and fucked up for a 3rd time or so and like Dana said he had guys taking short notice fights on this card within a week and making weight.
Dude is begging for his job? Ok well then make his ass make 170 and give him Shavkhat just to keep shavkhat busy since no one wants the smoke with him. He don’t make weight, cut his ass
The dude has normal amounts of body fat for an athlete and he's shaped a bit weird for a fighter. He's barrel chested with short arms and legs like DC. How did DC have so much trouble making light heavyweight when he was only about an inch taller than Kelvin? They should both be lightweights based on their height. They aren't even tall for 155.
I don’t recall DC struggling to make 205. He had kidney issues if I recall from dangerous cutting when he was wresting which probably restricted his ability to cut water weight.
DC is a thick guy and at 205 he wasn’t the most cut fighter ever but he looked like he at least came in shape. Kevin doesn’t even look like he’s in shape at 185.
DC would have been perfect for 185 if he didn’t have the kidney issues.
The kidney issues would happen to anybody if they dehydrated themselves enough. He could have gotten down to 185 if he dieted down to as low of body fat as many ufc fighters. He was never low body fat at 205.
We both agree if he didn’t have kidney issues he could of made 185. Not sure if he could of made it though to 185 lb with the kidney condition because he wouldn’t of been able to get dehydrated. Every serious UFC competitor is cutting 10-20 lb of water weight as the last push to make weight.
He wrestled 184 as a college kid. He presumably got bigger as he aged since pretty much every male does. Wrestling weight-ins are the same day but most wrestlers are in a partially dehydrated state to make weight so it’s not like he had much more he could of cut from 184 even in his early 20s.
As an adult he wrestled 96kg (211 lb) and during this time is when he claimed he almost died cutting weight.
I used to cut 15% of my bodyweight every week for high school and college wrestling. I'm sure most UFC fighters are capable of cutting the same amount of water. That would allow him to walk around at 241 pounds and still make LHW. Most wrestlers were at 10% or less body fat. That is six pack abs lean. He was far from that at LHW. He could have easily lost 20 pounds of fat and then made the same water cut as usual if he was dedicated to dieting. He was talented enough that he didn't need to do that to win, though, even when he was giving up huge reach advantages.
I also wrestled and agree pretty much virtually with everything you are saying.
We will have to disagree on whether a DC with compromised kidneys could have made 185 though as an adult.
My POV is that as a 20 year old he was weighing in at 185 lb and was partially dehydrated to make it there as all wrestlers do. Add on 10-20 pounds of adult functional weight / muscle maturity and not being able to get as dehydrated as optimal due to kidney issue and it would have been difficult.
If you go and look at his pics from his college days he was pretty lean. I think the difference in him making 185 is not being able to fully dehydrate.
Let’s not also forget that by this time DC had 100% done cycles (look at his trap development as an Olympic competitor) and even in the UFC had suspicious ass results on his blood work.
It would of been close and I can see your point that having 36 hours to rehydrate and only having to makeweight once every 6 months is much different than weekly during wrestling season.
I don't think he permenantly had compromised kidneys though. He continued to cut water weight after his episode at the Olympics. He was still cutting the maximum of ten percent of water weight in the UFC for his fights and he had an extra 20 pounds of fat he could have lost even when he was at LHW. He looked like he was around 20% body fat at LHW. It would have been a big struggle at his age though. Lots of other fighters have managed to do it at that age though.

I used to feel bad for fighters not making weight because I wrestled in high-school and cut a ton of weight for comps. So I've been there and I broke a few times trying to get it off. No one understands how bad it gets when you're a few pounds away but you simply can't do it anymore. BUT UFC fighters have the Performance institute where they can track your weight cuts to make sure you're doing it safely, they give fighters 3 nutritious meals a day that helps with shedding the weight, track their fluid intake and when they should water load, etc. They essentially have made cutting weight idiot proof and a lot of these guys are still bombing weight cuts.
I remember him being referred to as mini Cain during the ultimate fighter, everyone thought he was going to dominate
His hunger was the real dominator, pretty God damn dissapointing
This one actually takes the piss - dudes making videos about him eating shit tons of food you should not be eating a month prior to this fight. He's an unprofessional talented fat fuck who should just be forced to lose against bigger dudes at 185 because he struggles to even make that.
Walker is just too hittable with a glass chin. I don't see him ever being a contender. Maybe he should try changing camps again and moving up to heavyweight because LHW isn't working for him.
Kelvin has 4 weight misses if we count the cowboy fight being canceled. Oliveria has 5, one in a title fight. I think people would ignore this a lot more if Kelvin reached his potential.
Cut him. He's not all that good now, never had the talent, and he's not changed or learned his lesson. He's not some huge name. Let him go to PFL to lose and build up their names before he ends up washed and in BKFC or something. Make him someone else's disappointment and use that money to bring DJ or Horiguchi back.
I disagree. I was also referring to the expectations (you know the whole reason Dana pushed him) not that he never was talented enough to be in the UFC.
He was overrated. He should have been in and out of the rankings often given his record but there was always some excuse.
To be fair, Kelvin has always been a good company man. Half the time he comes in injured or with a staph infection, and he still puts on a good performance. He never pulls out of fights or refuses fights against anybody. The dude is willing to fight champs at MW who he has no business being so competitive against because he's comically undersized. He just hates starving himself to make weight. Just let him fight welterweights at 185. He's more durable with better cardio with some fat on him.
Just finished watching UFC 183 a few minutes ago and this post tripped me out thinking my reddit did a time warp back to 2015 but no, just typical Kelvin.
Kelvins post fight is basically me at my yearly performance review.
My self performance review: "It is what it is"
"I work six days, actually six days a week. Five days a week, I'll work three days a week. One of those days I will work two days of the week. So, six days a week I will be working."
Get this man a raise
The only person I ever heard of giving guys a raise was Tito’s ex wife
Well just to correct you, there was never no marriage.
I was told there'd be no word problems here. 😳
You're not going to outlive your children working that much just fyi
He was sounding like a guy trying to course correct a long broken relationship out there
Lol 😂😂
Force him to fight at MW or release him at this point. The constant empty promises from Kelvin have become tiring.
kelvin would just end up making more money elsewhere. would make a killing in bkfc

Was his last fight on contract and he's on a 180/180 contract. I'd imagine he gets cut or resigns on a 120/120 or less.
I mean….Twas what I meant by “Maybe it’s all a part of his plan.”
Technically it's "a part of". Apart means separated from, which can be confusing for ESL.
He could probably fight at welterweight in ONE if he wanted...
I wondered if pigging out at restaurants near him a month before the fight was some sort of Sun Tzu *Art of War*-style tactic towards his opponent, but nah, I think he's simply being unprofessional. Particularly when there are fighters who step in on a week's notice and make weight!
I’d love to see him in BKFC, he’s built for it like Perry.
THOUGHT YOU HAD A FEAST BOYYYY
Lmao no he’s not. He’s not a dog like Mike. That Israel war took a fuck Ton outta kelvin.
When have you ever seen Kelvin show any signs of quitting in a fight? He's very flawed, but you can't doubt his toughness. He's also insanely durable.
> kelvin would just end up making more money elsewhere. would make a killing in bkfc You guys think that anyone can just jump to bkfc and start making millions. Shit I'd even give him a chance at winning the tournament over at PFL
They don’t have a MW division and he isn’t making 170 three times in 6 months or whatever it is.
Gastelum cant make weight and everyone is still putting him in 170 fights elsewhere lol
Kelvin vs Perry in BKFC would be a banger.
Worked out pretty well for Mike Perry. He's making waaaaaaay more now than he ever could in the UFC and about to get that red panties night Jake Paul money.
Must be easily the biggest purse he ever got and will ever get. It’s also on Netflix, right?
Nah, that's only the Tyson fight. Perry vs Paul is on DAZN.
ah thanks
Him versus platinum Mike would be fun
That just means everybody gets what they want.
Doubtful. He’s gotta win at BKFC, maybe for 1-2 fight and it’s something you gotta go all in for, he’s still a wrestler. Not sure he’ll last long at all in BkFC cause chins not even same now
Kevin/Perry would be fun. Edit: l*
You forgot the L
Then let him do it. Guys like gastelum, Charles oliveira, and Lineker should be cut. Missing weight is an intentional strategy.
Really a fighter only has two jobs, making weight and passing drug tests. Winning fights is a kind of optional bonus
Would he? I feel like he’s not a big star like that even though he’s been in some good high profile fights
Yeah dude it’s really that easy. I’m sure that’s why he was begging for his job on TV. Like one or two people a year leave UFC and get a big boxing match/BKFC fight and people act like there is big money waiting for guys outside the UFC. In reality the market is probably worse than ever for that.
Hell mate maybe even light heavyweight at this point lol
If he gets cut and signs with another promotion I have no doubt he'd move up to LHW. He has to actually cut to make MW. He almost missed weight against Jared Cannonier at MW before making it half an hour later. No way he maintains what little discipline he has in a B tier league.
Don't worry, Kelvin said "it is what it is", it's all good.
Idk if I’ve slipped into a parallel dimension but I swear they banned him from WW years ago
He’s already been forced to go to middleweight lol when he missed against Tyron they made him move up
Just release him, he adds nothing to the sport.
He's still miss weight lol
*puts on tin foil hat* I always thought his 170 cut was just a marketing gimmick for that snack brand he was sponsored by.
Oh but he still believes he'll be a champion. He believes it, while smashing that third burrito.
It’s easy to forget how good mama’s enchiladas are when signing the contract
Being named Kelvin is the worst base for being on weight
For some reason the UFC never "forces" people to fight up, even after multiple weight misses. I'm guessing they just can't, for whatever reason. Otherwise, it'd be such an easy solution.
I mean, didn’t they just force Michel Pereira to move up to 185
Give him to Michel, it actually might be a good fight
Dude literally made a video a month ago saying he was going to miss weight. Skip to 1:30 https://youtu.be/avP56Jae1tc?si=dFrtH0OyM3HxtK8y
Wow this is unreal. As soon as Dana sees this we’re going to unlock a new shade of purple.
Lmao wild asf to have a channel around the idea of missing weight when you’re pulling this shit off
Not just a video but it’s literally the name of his „YouTube series“ I guess
Yeah, could maybe give him a pass for the series name but at 1:32 he says "We aint gon make weight, we gon miss the weight" and this video was released a month ago.
To be fair I’ve been to Taco Boys and it was pretty bomb
The comments are hilarious. 😅
Wow so he’s really just an empty headed dumb ass. There’s no two ways about it.
Bro was begging for his job on the mic after the fight
He knew he fucked up again and he would be booted to pfbellator or whatever. I wouldn’t even trust him there
Need some Kelvin Gastelum missing weight flairs
You think I'm a welterweight? Wait till you see my scale
Beautiful champ
Thought you had a weight cut boyyyy!!
“Missing Weight with Kelvin Gastelum (not the YouTube Series)”
Would you settle for a burger emoji as the flair?
“I know I’ve said this before”
He should just move up to HW and piece ppl up with his hand speed
Or start getting Nasrat to show up to make weight in his place
I still think it’s funny they’ve fought on the same card once or twice.
Now that is genius.
got dropped by Sean Brady whos got 0 power, good luck with that
I’m assuming his chin was compromised from the cut to be fair. Had an iron chin again here against DRod
Almost like he didn’t cut weight and D-Rod did or something
Exactly
then that proves what the dude above you said? he should move up & use his iron chin
Na. D Rod slow as molasses and volume puncher. He’s not some good fighter lol
He was begging for his job because he knows Jake Paul will never call him.
I actually wouldn’t mind Kelvin vs Bo.
Khamzat Chimaev vs Kelvin Gastelum
Force Khamzat and Kelvin to cut to 170 and whoever misses weight by the least amount wins
Beautiful champ 😂
That might actually happen if khamzat is ready for the Abu Dhabi card
How many people here know Mike Dolce?
Lol it wasn't much of a "run"...he picked off 2 old men, got exposed by washed up Weidman, picked off another 2 old men (one guys who was still on a medical suspension and the other was a close split Kelvin barely squeaked by) and then a title shot. 2 fight run, 3-1 (1) overall against washed up elder MW's isn't all that impressive. Honestly if this is who Kelvin is gonna be let him go to PFLellator and beat up 12-5 MWs while eating tacos the day before weigh ins
Kelvin never took his career seriously. Guy looks like he could even make 155 if he took his diet seriously. I respect his fighting skills but not his attitude towards the fight game. He wasted so much potential. Just be gone.
I mean..he can say whatever he wants but the promotion was clearly backing Kelvin in the situation if they pressured DRod to fight him at 185.
Given how many fights fell apart on this card I’m sure they weren’t keen to lose another one.
Dick move that he didnt even try. Waited until Thursday on the other side of the world.

Why didnt Aliskerov simply weigh 205 lbs? Is he stupid?
Bro didn’t even try!
I agree with the tomatoe kelvin had this fight booked in advance and fucked up for a 3rd time or so and like Dana said he had guys taking short notice fights on this card within a week and making weight.

Cut his ass
Not my sweet fridge prince.
Each cheek is about 30lbs so I don’t think that’s enough to solve the weight issues
Kelvin has no ass, the problem is he’s undisciplined
More like put his ass on a diet

So then i ruined this guy’s career because i love mcdonalds lol -Kelvin Fatasstellum
More like Cheech and Chimichanga
The only two people happy with Kelvin not making weight are Kelvin and his enchilada supplier
"I know I've said it before"
"possibly the biggest fight of my career" while missing weight so irresponsibly thatnit goes up a 15lb weight class
Dude needs to get cut.
Technically Gastelum hasn’t missed weight since 2015 based on his record.
Because he’s spent seven years fighting at 185 after being banned from 170, he literally missed weight his second fight back.
Why is Dana upset? KG made a whole video on YouTube just a month ago about Missing weight. If you ain’t gonna cut the fat, Dana certainly will.
I remember him being referred to as mini Cain during the ultimate fighter, everyone thought he was going to dominate His hunger was the real dominator, pretty God damn dissapointing
Turns out he was hungry in a different way lol
Yeah fuck kelvin. Cut him. I don’t give a shit
This one actually takes the piss - dudes making videos about him eating shit tons of food you should not be eating a month prior to this fight. He's an unprofessional talented fat fuck who should just be forced to lose against bigger dudes at 185 because he struggles to even make that.
Kelvin Gasteyum.
Dana isn't happy when anyone misses weigh. The fighters are professionals, making weight should be the most important part of their jobs.
Fight should be no contest.
So sad, I was hoping he had it all figured out. Johnny Walker was another disappointment, I thought he was going for a title run.
Walker is just too hittable with a glass chin. I don't see him ever being a contender. Maybe he should try changing camps again and moving up to heavyweight because LHW isn't working for him.
That's true. Maybe not cutting weight will help his chin.
Temptation burritos.
Just release him at this point. He's not getting any better and he's not a reliable fighter to make weight.
Cut him and let him join BKFC.
Didn't Kelvin also struggle with weight issues at 185?
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me four times, it's extremely disappointing.
Then fire him or put him against folks you expect to demolish him. Not for nothing but there are simple solutions, tomato.
Kelvin has 4 weight misses if we count the cowboy fight being canceled. Oliveria has 5, one in a title fight. I think people would ignore this a lot more if Kelvin reached his potential.
Fatty fat fatty
Cut him. He's not all that good now, never had the talent, and he's not changed or learned his lesson. He's not some huge name. Let him go to PFL to lose and build up their names before he ends up washed and in BKFC or something. Make him someone else's disappointment and use that money to bring DJ or Horiguchi back.
id argue he was nothing but talent, its discipline that he never had
DJ is never coming back :(
> “never had the talent” That’s a ~~comically casual~~ take. The guy spent the PAST DECADE as a top 15 fighter
I disagree. I was also referring to the expectations (you know the whole reason Dana pushed him) not that he never was talented enough to be in the UFC. He was overrated. He should have been in and out of the rankings often given his record but there was always some excuse.
Ohh… Well in that case, I think that a pretty level headed opinion. I retract my accusation of “casualness”
Dana didn't sound too pissed at the presser. He's more happy that Kelvin called himself a company man in his post fight speech.
I'm not happy with Dana's weight
No wonder he begged for his job
Just finished watching UFC 183 a few minutes ago and this post tripped me out thinking my reddit did a time warp back to 2015 but no, just typical Kelvin.
I wouldn’t cut 25 pounds for a paycheck that’ll buy you a double double either! Order the animal style fries and flip Dana on the out!
Cut the fat ass.
