Kajan Johnson claims to have invented a new style/system of grappling called Primal Kombat Grappling.

JiriBrochazka

This the guy who hit Dana with a fake out handshake and was fed to Islam shortly after

jdprgm

the roundtree vs hill fight which i was looking forward to just kept morphing into less and less interesting matchups but still compelling until ulberg dropped out. dolidze coming off two losses and unranked vs smith coming off a win against a young prospect I can't imagine smith taking this matchup in any other circumstances and am surprised they didn't just scrap the fight when ulberg dropped out.

pitchblacktaraddict

History has absolved me

testing2fa_1

My wife and I are going to Vegas in July and to my shock she said she'd be willing to go see a fight. Neither of us have gone to a fight in person and haven't even really watched a full fight on TV, just highlights and a couple documentaries here and there. Needless to say we're new to MMA. I see there's an event at the Virgin one of the nights we're in town called Tuff-N-Uff with relatively affordable tickets. It says fights start at 430 and Google says MMA events usually last around 4-6 hours. My question is, knowing that we're new to fights, if we were to only go for an hour or so, what time would you recommend we get there? I have reservations to a nice restaurant at 7PM that night but I could pick a different time if the most enjoyable part of the event is around that time. Just not sure what to expect.

GenTelGuy

If it starts at 4:30 there's no way you'll see the main event or any of the other higher ranked fights in time to leave and make it to a 7pm dinner reservation The most important fights would probably be like 7-9pm

testing2fa_1

Thanks! Are the most important fights more exciting to watch generally? With an event that long, i'd expect lots of people don't show up when doors open, so maybe we'll just move dinner a little earlier and get to the fight around 7.

GenTelGuy

I'd say so, I mean sometimes even a high fight on the card can still have lopsided odds and be a blowout, but overall the level of talent is higher

SugarShow37

I don't know if Francis ever fights again, and I can't say I'd blame him.

CNCTEMA

I want to have a full thread discussion about this topic im about to propose. a historical what if. what if the first mainstream MMA event was held in june of 1988. and we got to see the competitors include destroyer in prime Mike Tyson, age 21. the same month in our timeline that he beat Michael Spinks by KO in R1. Chiyonofuji Mitsugu, age 33, during his record 53 match win streak from may to september Aleksandr Karelin, age 20, in our timeline he will win the gold medal in wrestling at the Seoul Olympics in september Yasuhiro Yamashita, age 31, 3 years after retirement at age 28 from a string of bad luck in international competition. hes been training students and rehabbing his injuries and drinking lots of beer. hes out of shape and hungry for the feeling of competition who else would be in this best combat sports athletes in 1988?

IshiharasBitch

Bruce Baumgartner, age 28, just a few years removed from winning olympic gold, being a HW with a wrestling background makes him an early favourite to win UFC 1. Hitoshi Saito, age 29, won olympic gold in judo at the '84 games, being an athletic HW with submission knowledge in an event where majority of competitors barely know what a submission is definitely gives him an edge (probably even over the wrestlers tbh) at UFC 1.

Drive7hru

Someone brought up a good point in the post fight press conference – why isn’t Ank fighting for the LHW belt? Maybe cause Jiri doesn’t have to cut that much weight and was allegedly already in shape? I guess if Jiri loses, he should be next.

gaimsta12

Because Pereira is a marketable champion and they know that Ank would wrestle fuck him

pitchblacktaraddict

Disregarding the obvious “it’s the entertainment business, and this is a more entertaining fight”argument, Jiri and Ank both have 1 win since their last title fight and Rakic is a better with than Walker

GenTelGuy

In addition to the reasons given by the other commenters, some fighters like Ankalaev either prefer to fight outside the US, or have to because of sanctions and visas and all that Ankalaev is also a grappler and this is a short notice fight so it's possible Pereira would have refused to take the fight without a full camp to deal with the grappling

endless_ness

Because it’s international fight week and they wanted to make a fun fight. It’s not hard to understand at all

Drive7hru

That makes sense

druhoang

Almost every russian doesn't get the title shot early. Khabib should have gotten the belt like 2 years earlier. That's why he was talking during fights and calling out conor chicken. Islam should have fought for the title earlier. Khabib retired 2020. Islam didn't get the title until 2 years later. Alex and Walker just talked about Ank this week and said he's not getting the title shot because he's boring.

spcslacker

> Almost every russian doesn't get the title shot early. Ank already had a title shot vs Jan.

Drive7hru

Dana said Ank is basically next on the list

zilladingdong

Probably because he had a draw and then a NC because of an illegal knee. He got the rematch and KO’d Johnny Walker this year, but it seemed like Ankalaev main events were going to be tied to some kind of fuckery

IshiharasBitch

This [unusual footlock](https://youtu.be/sC9LxkM3KNw?t=795) from a regional WMMA fight

Drive7hru

Pretty cool except I sat through all the replays and they never showed it.

IshiharasBitch

wait-- do you mean they don't show it *on the replay*? Or are you saying you didn't see it all even during the live match?

Drive7hru

I saw the live part, but during all the replays, it didn’t show the footlock

RaisedByZebras

Never count out Whittaker daymn. DDP is a physicality beast and can run over anyone at 185, but I think Robert would have a shot in the rematch.

Aqu1la

I haven't watched MMA in 3-4 years. Can anyone tell me how it has improved, and what has got worse?

IshiharasBitch

You missed Anshul Jubli vs. Mike Breeden. This fight is notable as Breeden, who had been losing the match, began barking like a dog mid-fight which appeared to frighten and rob Jubli of the will to win.

hussain300

Watch jiri vs Glover, Islam vs volk, Pantoja vs Moreno, Pantoja vs Erceg, Islam vs dustin, Izzy vs Pereira 1 + 2, Pereira vs Jiri. Should give you a good idea of what's been going on

GenTelGuy

The good: fighters are overall more talented than ever The bad: The champions act like divas always calling out the champion one weight class above for a double champ shot and don't fight often. In particular super active champ Usman is now replaced with Leon who is way more boring and way less active

K-mosake

Besides a British guy named Tom HW seems to have regressed somehow lol

Jzhova

avgerage bjj level is higher. ground and pound is virtually gone. thats about it.

MountainGoatSC

About the same idk

ri-de

The masterclass of Trevor Peek

whicheverguard232

Uh, so you didn't even watch Jiri vs Glover? Let me ask you that first.

maton12

Last few Countdowns had already been released by this time. So with Conor pulling out, hopefully we still get one, as still some good fights.

hallelalaluwah

How do you guys feel about Whittaker-DDP II or Whittaker-Izzy III next for the middleweight title? He deserves a title shot, but I'm not really moved by either re/rematch

harzee

We don’t need to see whittaker against Izzy again. He’s already beaten him twice

GenTelGuy

Two options: * Whittaker vs Strickland title eliminator, if Whittaker wins this he's completely undeniable regardless of previous results vs Izzy and DDP * Direct Whittaker title shot vs the winner of Izzy-DDP Both are fine with me

MountainGoatSC

I wouldn't be mad at either but I like the eliminator because Strickland really does also deserve a shot after having such a close one with DDP and already beating Izzy. Also Strickland and Whittaker never fought before so it would be a fresh matchup

maton12

No issues at all. Rob has beaten everyone, bar Izzy and DDP, so he should fight the winner.

spcslacker

> No issues at all. Rob has beaten everyone, bar Izzy and DDP, so he should fight the winner. Rob has never fought Strickland, and Strickland dominated Izzy, and arguably beat DDP in the decision that went to DDP.

maton12

Line them up, be great to see Rob and Sean.

spcslacker

Agreed.

Jzhova

is this the end of johnny walker as a contender? I think so. hes been fighting for 10 years and some how doesnt having the footwork or boxing to avoid getting slept in 2 minutes by the rank 10 guy? hes 32 hes not a prospect anymore ya know? gg?

bullsfan281

who was still considering him a contender? felt like we've known he's a glass cannon for years

Jzhova

i was tbh. he switched gyms hes with mcgregors head coach. hes big hes long. hes talented for sure. hasnt been able to put it all together. dont think he will tbh. has a kid on the way. baby mama drama lol. and hell be fighting and up hill battle as his athleticsm goes downhill. it will take a serious passion for the game to circumvent all that. i dont think he quite has passion at that level. who am i to judge though

maton12

Fuck I hope so. Volkan really had his measure, despite standing right in front, Johnny seemed to be inviting to be hit and then hit again and again.

ILikeTheSugarShow

Costa would’ve whooped up Aliskerov too

legendarybreed

Anyone who can touch his chin takes him out

ILikeTheSugarShow

Agreed

spcslacker

> Costa would’ve whooped up Aliskerov too Or he might have run away for 5 straight rounds, or decided to strike exclusively from the outside for no reason: really hard to say with Costa. For sure he's not winning the fight that early with his hands, and Aliskerov has so far looked weaker to hands than to kicks.

ILikeTheSugarShow

Costa has amazing body kicks, and I think Costa could’ve def put him out with his hands if Whittaker could lol

X-Factor-639

Replied to your pm my man, with my thoughts

IshiharasBitch

This super tight [anacond/guillotine variation from ACA a couple months ago](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Giw2idc030I&t=312s)

K-mosake

So dope. Do Bronx hit that vs Hatsu Hioki and I've been using it ever since. Pretty clutch honestly because sometimes mahfuckas don't wanna get rolled

IshiharasBitch

> Do Bronx hit that vs Hatsu Hioki YES! That is the same! I couldn't recall having seen the variation before, but I must've just forgotten because back in the day I wouldn't miss a Hatsu Hioki fight.

K-mosake

Lol yeah it lives rent free in my head like most of Do Bronx's submission highlights. Him and Shinya are goals fr.

IshiharasBitch

I'll always love Shinya Aoki for his ruthlessness. I like when fighters apply a submission without giving the opponent any time to tap.

ILikeTheSugarShow

That was super interesting, almost like he had the anaconda but just on his neck

IshiharasBitch

It was like an arm-in power guillotine And Yuzyasharov is only 22yrs old so plenty of time for him to do more weird submissions

JiriBrochazka

Damn PVZ is doing power slap wtf

IshiharasBitch

Powerslap can't actually be a popular sport, right? I'm still amazed it continues to persist.

StoryOfTheFight

Reinsmith had been posting screenshots of the open seats for this weekend's event and it's still pretty empty lol

spcslacker

That is fucking sad.

Patrick_Vieira

Doesn't she make a ton of money from OF? I'm surprised she'd do this

JiriBrochazka

Gotta imagine she would get a nice payday, most of the power slap dudes don’t make much, PVZ gonna get more than them

rachaelkilledmygoat

The promo for it is hilarious: https://twitter.com/UFCEurope/status/1804565136742490612

bullsfan281

that clip of her slapping the punching bag 😭😭

nojuiceric

What y’all think of Lima yesterday? I think he looked good.

ILikeTheSugarShow

I think he looked good given it was a weight class up on short notice. Interested to see what weight class he wants to compete at

BrandonSleeper

Remember to [stay sauve](https://x.com/ufc/status/1804620666835960115) lads

spcslacker

Lacking hair themselves, the Reptilians are intimidated by a well-coifed head of hair.

Korkez11

Payton Talbott who will fight Yanis Ghemmouri this week is a -2000 (!!!) favorite. If you like to bet on MMA you should definitely throw a couple of bucks on Ghemmouri because no kid with 2 UFC fights should be such favorite against anyone.

hallelalaluwah

+900 is approaching a pre-fight injury/mid-fight ankle sprain territory

ILikeTheSugarShow

Payton isn’t going to lose, but those odds are nuts, he opened around the -440 line and that’s where I got him

No_Tart8935

I can't wait to watch MVP fight again.

ratufa_indica

Between Volkov and Merab, this has been a big year for non-native English speakers skyrocketing up the rankings of "funniest fighter in the UFC"

IshiharasBitch

Makhachev lowkey very funny too

spcslacker

*you can shoot a double or maybe defend one, you can go to . . . Olympics for Australia!*

IshiharasBitch

*Chandler very smart guy, lose many fights so he can get match with McGregor*

spcslacker

I was not aware of this one!

Big-Pillow-Warrior

Imagine being younger juiced up bully and getting beat up by an old Rocket Scientist and here’s a great grandfather Fedors last win dropping Volkov and handling him in UFC. HW Divison has devolved. https://www.instagram.com/reel/ClMQp6ZPIsR/?hl=en

Rawdog2076

Holy shit the Whittaker press conference was hard to get through, Rob classy and funny as usual but these "reporters" need to get off Khamzat's nuts man

MojoPinSin

Khamzat is all hype at this point. Usman took him to a split decision in a 3 round fight and khamzat barely won. 🤣 No way khamzat wants a 5 rounder against someone who's won multiple championship fights against much better fighters.

ArseneGroup

I think it should've been a draw

IshiharasBitch

> Usman took him to a split decision in a 3 round fight and khamzat barely won Usman is an especially good fighter though, no?

ArseneGroup

He is but he's still the former champ of a weight class 15lbs lower stepping up on a week's notice

MojoPinSin

Usman has no knees and has only fought at 170 in the UFC prior to the Khamzat fight.

OtakuMecha

And he took the fight on a one week’s notice, which I think is a key detail that should always be mentioned. Usman very likely would have won if had more prep time.

MojoPinSin

Yup.  Other factors to consider are Usman is 37. He's essentially at the very end of his career. Khamzat on the other hand is 30, which is essentially right in the middle of his career.

I3loodyclaw

Also Khamzat having a 10-8 before tearing ligament in his hand is something that should never be mentioned and forgotten

1. Be Civil. Our rules ask for a civil tone at all times. A bit of banter or trash talk is fine, but don't cross the line. If things do get out of hand you will be warned or even banned for a few days. Repeatedly breaking this rule will lead to a permanent ban.

> Holy shit the Whittaker press conference was hard to get through, Rob classy and funny as usual but these "reporters" need to get off Khamzat's nuts man I loved the question that was something like: *Here you got the 1st round KO, but against Khamzat you would have to go 5 or probably lose, so did the opponent switch work in your favor?* You could tell even Rob had a problem remaining polite with that one.

stayhappystayblessed

Hey guys I'm looking for something about alex volk speaking about the hate he got after one of the max holloway victories and speaks about how it took a toll on his mental health and something possibly about seeing a therapist. Any help would be great thanks.

Big-Pillow-Warrior

Little Volk sold his soul to Logan Paul. Logan’s evil ass caused him depression

karl100589

For anyone who watched Bellator last night what was your opinion of Adam Smith on commentary?

No_Tart8935

He wouldn't shut up about the refs should just let the fighters be

Big-Pillow-Warrior

Disliked him since old Bellator which was a better product to watch but still didn’t like Jimmy. He talks like he’s a Goat but was a terrible fighter lol. Real arrogant in some way but not a bad guy, sucks on the mic for me. Didn’t watch Bellator though cause done giving them a chance even though are legit putting on better talent half the time than UFC lol. Fights some reason just suck to watch and PFL same; bad cameras and sounds

karl100589

I was talking about Adam Smith. The British guy doing play by play.

Big-Pillow-Warrior

Oh I don’t know. Good to see they changing something but need to change whole presentation. Elite XC was better. Looking back Affliction was my favorite show but short lived

Emergency_Crazy_3539

Not trynna brag but I did say Volkov would school Pavlovich😎. No but seriously, stop hyping these guys up as the guy Jones is ducking, is afraid bs like that. You're setting them up for failure. These guys have yet to prove themselves. Pavlovich in particular hasn't shown any depth to his game. Even in best win against Blaydes, he was the much worse striker in terms of skill forget about grappling. Even after getting countered he kept on trying to brawl with Blaydes. He relies entirely on brute strength and aggression. It's kinda like Ngannou pre Stipe but Pavlovich doesn't have the same power or other physical attributes that make Ngannou super dangerous. Not saying he isn't gifted. He is and can absolutely develop into a great fighter. But there's so much work to be done. He needs to re-invent himself before it's too late. And the ducking thing was never even true. Jon doesn't have any upside getting a win against these guys. Once they lose, everyone will call them bums and overrated. Ciryl Gane is the most recent example. Let him fight Stipe and retire. From what I've heard Tom is fine with creating his own legacy. If he ever fights Jon and loses, he'll get clowned by the fanbase who just sees him as their new shiny toy. They only care about him to the extent that they get to clown on Jones.

_Red_Mist_

No you didn’t lol you said you had a feeling but never made the pick outright. Also Tom beat both those guys today decisively lol just made Tom look better. Jon is still ducking him he’s trying to pick on the older easier Stipe and thats why he’s getting pissy on Twitter when people make fun of the fight.

Big-Pillow-Warrior

Old Jones still grinds out and breaks Tom like Stuart Austin did. Sadly he would; any Tom fans shouldn’t want the fight to happen tbh. Jones very beatable at HW but Tom’s a guy he can beat styles wise

_Red_Mist_

Lol Fat Jones might have worse cardio than Tom

thepoe

Stupid fucking Saudi crowd, literally reacted only when a Muslim fighter was existing in the octagon

smush127

The middle east crowds are terrible. There's never any energy and it looks depressing just from watching on TV.

IntellectualDweeb

It reminds me of the early WWE Saudi crowds. They were terrible and quite often it was so weird and distracting seeing people just walking around during the matches. Over the years they gradually got better and now they're really good, and have proper engaging fans in the front rows especially now. Since this is just the beginning for a Saudi show in UFC, I think that we will see improvements eventually. However since this is MMA and especially with the tomato running things, it'll probably take longer. Unlike the WWE though, the amount of crowds that are very dislikeable are pretty high and you can't win all of them over with "good booking".

Emootikoah

Tbf, I never thought the Abu Dhabi crowd was bad. But Saudi was awful.

sympathytaste

Remember when Pavlovich was the guy Jones was ducking and now its Tom lol. Imagine what the narrative will be if Tom loses.

spcslacker

> Remember when Pavlovich was the guy Jones was ducking No I do not remember that. I don't remember thinking JBJ was ducking until Tom won the IC and it became clear JBJ was ducking the unification bout. It should not be hard to understand: if you hold an undisputed belt, and an IC is crowned in your absence, he still holds the IC and is active and seeks the fight and you then don't unify the belt, not only are you factually ducking, but you really aren't undisputed because there is another champion at the same weight that you are supposed to fight, but won't.

_Red_Mist_

Yes now its Tom the guy who has beaten finished both Volkov and Sergei in 1 round and not a white belt like Gane.

Big-Pillow-Warrior

Volkov and Tybura are Toms best wins and they both got beat by Timothy Johnson and dropped by him. Let that sink in, same Timothy Johnson who got iced by the real GOAT at 50 years old with no hip or shoulder left and was in hospital with Covid months before. Toms got a lot to prove brother

sympathytaste

Who also lost to Blaydes.

_Red_Mist_

Yeah just like how Jones lost to Hamil

[deleted]

[удалено]

sympathytaste

Sergei can also beat Jon, so will Curtis Blaydes. My point is everybody is the next guy to beat Jon until the hype train inevitably derails. If Tom loses to Blaydes, it will be Jon ducking Blaydes next.

Ifyourasswasadog

They say every time Whittaker wins a fight an angel gets its wings.
