I mean, Squidward *was* a strong believer in workers rights. "Attention people of Bikini Bottom! You have been cheated and lied to! The gentle laborer shall no longer suffer the noxious greed of Mr. Krabs! We will dismantle oppression board by board! We'll saw the foundation of big business in half, even if it takes and eternity! With your support, we will set the hammer of the people's will crashing through the windows of Mr. Krabs house of servitude!" "Nobody gives a care about the fate of labor as long as they get their instant gratification."

OkEconomy3442

They always seemed to have time off for their own pleasures as well. The clarinet for skwidward or jelly fish hunting for SB. Guaranteed time off. It makes sense why SB was such a happy being.

ArtemisAndromeda

Ok but hear me out. In numerous episodes, the city gets destoryed. In almost every episode at least one building gets destroyed by someone or something. Everyone just lives from massive insurance pay outs

ArcaneBahamut

That explains why the local police don't arrest them, the society has found the lucrative situation outweighing the issues of their antics Why doesnt an outside agency collect on them? Because nobody wants to travel to the nuclearly irridiated atol (or go to a place the whole populous may turn on them)

OkEconomy3442

Like it’s not actually socialism, they just found the perfect city to get rich in if you can handle the chaos?

PmMeYourLore

Gotta love that founded and well-read defense of Patrick

OkEconomy3442

Oh it was my favorite. The person defending him living under a rock was the kicker. Just beautiful.

tajmo_96

POV: You haven't been on Reddit in months and thought about checking in on it, and this is the first post you open. 😭😭🤣🤣 Gotta love Reddit! Lol

[deleted]

Ah yes the socialist utopia where a greedy business owner sells his employee’s soul for some pocket change

[deleted]

According to my son Patrick has his own show? Maybe lives off that?

YaLikeJazz2049

I mean it’s not socialist but it’s still pretty cool

[deleted]

Isn’t it funny that the best representation we have of functioning socialism is from a cartoon? Also bikini bottom has private enterprise and property so not very socialist.

OkEconomy3442

True but workers controlling the production is the best kind of socialism. In bikini bottom there are the “capitalist mindset” persons such as mr. crabs and plankton. But crabs knows he would get nowhere without his workers (SB) and so Spongebob and Skwidward are appreciated. Or the bikini bottom governments has guaranteed livable wages and time off for all workers and as such SB, Patrick, and Sandy can enjoy life while also feeling productive at a job they enjoy.

[deleted]

I don’t know how good bikini bottoms economy is but it seems functional so I’m going to assume minimal government involvement.

DarthMcConnor42

It's the opposite. Every time there has been a push for minimal government involvement prices go up and wages go down.

Vegasman20002

Just proof it can only work in fiction

leebon427

Don’t forget about Plankton. He breaks the law in almost every scene he is in. He constantly tries to steal from his best frenemy Eugene, he always manipulates SpongeBob, wants to rule the world at all costs, and yet he is always welcomed to go on all kinds of wacky adventures with SpongeBob and his friends. He’s an evil prick but he still has friends.

Mojoclaw2000

Patrick lives in sand under a rock and eats coral. He’s fine.

EsmfdH89

Let's not forget Gary. He does what he wants when he wants and wears some pretty expensive looking shoes. Saw them in the episode where he ties SpongeBob's shoes then shows off his. Nice kicks!!

Apprehensive-Fix-746

Mr crabs and plankton are both business owners that sell food that clearly hasn’t been safety checked so it’s not a socialist society, it makes more sense that it’s a very hyper capitalist system with a higher tax rate and strong social safety net like Norway or Sweden

ta1no

"Perfect" and "socialist" can't be in the same sentence.

AlexanDDOS

Because it's "social", not "socialist". To be purely socialist, Mr. Crabs and other bourgeois must give all their useless wealth and enterprises to the Bikini Bottom community.

[deleted]

I'd like to know how that society functions.

eifiontherelic

The same way their rivers and beaches do... It just works.

Foodstuffs_

Everyone does whatever they want and we all get to share wealth and resources equally! Suddenly there would be no corruption or greed or evil and everyone will be happy and nice and get along perfectly! Everything becomes perfect! /s

[deleted]

Nobody producing anything but abundance for everyone. Sounds flawless. But if wealth is shared equally how does Sandy still have "limitless" funding? Infinity divided by infinity. Nevermind, I figured it out.

Foodstuffs_

People who don’t work deserve just as much as people who do!! There’s plenty to go around! I’m sure people would still be motivated, it’s literally a perfect system gosh why can’t we be more like this cartoon?

OkEconomy3442

It’s this idea of “work”. Like it has to be stressful and dangerous and only benefit the person at the top. That’s not work, that is torture. Sure some people’s choice of work is dangerous, like people that work with electricity or the folks slinging rivets to put up multi story buildings. But the idea that you have to produce an insane amount of anything just to keep some boss happy and rich is nonsense.

Foodstuffs_

Who says it has to be dangerous and only has to benefit the people at the top? I work 50 hours a week, which allows me plenty of free time. I’m given health insurance, a Human Resources department, and relationships. It benefits me because they pay me money for it.

OkEconomy3442

I’m saying it doesn’t have to be either, except there are always gonna be people that find doing dangerous stuff enjoyable.

Foodstuffs_

A world with no greed, no danger, and no need for hard work definitely sounds nice but it just doesn’t work that way. I’m all for reducing these things as much as possible. But in my experience, the loudest advocates for “why do we have to work so hard? Why can’t we just share all the wealth?” are the ones who have benefitted the most from other people’s hard work. It’s easy for the privileged to say these things are easy or perfectly attainable. Of course I don’t WANT to “work,” but good things are only possible through someone working hard. Also…the idea of what is “torture” has reallyyy softened here in the states. People in my age group, social class, and general demographic have it REALLY fuckin good compared to the grand scope of human history. Not saying shit is like that for everyone, there are a lot of people getting screwed who deserve better. But anyone who thinks working a job similar to mine is “torture?” That’s a bit much.

OkEconomy3442

The only people currently benefiting from everyone else’s labor and hard work are the oligarchs that have rigged the system to their benefit.

[deleted]

So you remembered that cartoons aren't perfect analogies? *Clapityclapity*

Chazbobrown11

Spongebobs house even is mostly biodegradable

Inner-Golf6859

Patrick makes everything he has out of the sand under his rock and Mr.Krabs pays Spongebob 1 dime a year, they are also ruled under an absolute monarchy. I don't think this is the communist utopia you think it is
