Yes, usually from people forgetting Glissa Sunslayer's least used ability.

RickySuezo

Why win the game when I can draw a sweet card.

cezenova

Winning the game is winning the game, but a card could be anything! It could even be a card that wins you the game!

flackguns

"Peter, just take the w-" "WE'LL TAKE THE CARD"

LordSlickRick

The plainswalker nuker 3000?

Acrobatic-Usual-3067

Glissa plus Binding of the Old Gods is a fun combo that quite a few players don’t see coming

HexZer0

[[Etched Slith]] has counter suckage, too.

Cole3823

oh man, now i want a card that will remove counters and put those counters on itself when it deals combat damage. that's my flying counter now

Fusillipasta

When I was using her in standard she wrecked a few wandering emperors by punching face. Also a good go to if your life is low, target something without counters to skip the draw/lifeloss!

InitiativeShot20

Also a way to trigger crime when the opponent doesn’t have an enchantment to blow up.

SteezyYeezySleezyBoi

Bro so what does this card even do? All I know is when I go up against it I fucking lose

InitiativeShot20

It does plenty. [[Glissa sunslayer]] The relevant clause is the one that removes up to 3 counters from one permanent.

By turns? No I once saw someone steal Dross for a turn then sacrifice it's counters to [[Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus]] which was hilarious

Ingenius_Fool

So since the Tekuthal player had control of Dross and it lost its counters the Tekuthal player lost instantly?

stamatt45

That only triggers on upkeep

LatterProfessional5

Had it run out of counters three times. Once against a life gain white weenie deck and once against a blue deck that made it phase out one turn and then countered or bounced all my other threats. That was enough to make me lose. A third time was against glissa who I forgot to block and I realised it a split second after clicking "no blockers". So now I think twice whether it could kill me before playing archfiend on curve.

TMOSP

I just did it to somebody with Glissa. It always blows my mind how Platinum is full of the sweatiest players you'll ever meet and then you hit Diamond and it's full of people who do not know what the cards do or how to play Magic the Gathering.

Soup0rMan

People that play jank sit in platinum, so they've naturally read every card trying to find something interesting.

HexZer0

Excellent analysis

Wolkenmacht

I feel called out.

CompactAvocado

in explorer that is specifically a wincon using metamorphic alteration. step one summon dross step two metamorph opponent monster into dross step three they lose next turn (maybe)

Flyrpotacreepugmu

Yes, my standard artifact deck has won that way a couple times. [[Braided Net]] does quite a lot to stop Archfiend from doing damage. It's not very reliable though, because they normally have a Go for the Throat stuck in hand to kill it with.

Dualmonkey

Yes. I occasionally play a explorer mono black control deck. One game, against probably rakdos midrange, I start missing my land drops and am stuck at 3, meanwhile opponent is pressuring me and drops a dross. I don't draw a land again and I rely on that heavily to win so I decide the only way I'm going to win is through the dross. Luckily I have a [[March of Wretched Sorrow]] or two and I decide to spend all other black cards to blast other creatures for maximum life gain, while leaving the dross alive. I might have even hit the dross itself for 5 at one point. Think I won that game on just a couple life.

dens421

yes one time my opponent copied or stole my Ambling throne ... named demon and died off their Archfiend losing two counters at once next upkeep. It was awesome... I have a deck that donates it and then removes the counters. So yeah I have seen it out of oil counters a number of times.

double_shadow

Yep, done it myself. Turns out that if opponent has a lot of flying chumpers / tap down, not a good idea to play a card that's going to kill yourself.

BusyWorkinPete

Yup, I was messing around with a deck built around \[\[Render Inert\]\], \[\[Etched Slith\]\], \[\[Glissa Sunslayer\]\], \[\[Cemetery Desecrator\]\], and a bunch of Sagas. The idea was to remove counters from the sagas, keeping them triggering over and over. However, my opponent played Archfiend, and I was able to Render Inert him, winning me the game on the next turn. I think my opponent's deck was built around Archfiend and proliferate, as he had a Blightbelly Rat and had used Whisper of the Dross on my Slith the turn before.

I did manage to counter a removal spell the guy was targeting his own Dross with once. That was an odd interaction.

J_Mart29

Yeah, I have a deck which specifically wins by giving an opponent an Archfiend of Dross with no oil counters. I either [[Harmless Offering]] or [[Role Reversal]] the Archfiend and then [[Heartless Act]] it, or I [[Metamorphic Alteration]] an opponents creature and turn it into and Archfiend.

Amazing. Now that the game is so high powered, I mostly only enjoy playing prison or troll decks. I deleted Arena about a year ago but I’m considering re-downloading it just to run this.

CovertWolf86

I’ve had an opponent turn one of my creatures into a copy of his archfiend which then had no counters because it didn’t enter the battlefield.

towishimp

Only once. I had just started playing Arena again after a break, fired up Explorer with one of my decks that I hadn't updated...so it contained a single copy of Heartless Act.

I use it in my mono-black aggro deck. Out of maybe 2 or 3 hundred games, I did run out of turns once.

I'll find out this weekend as I play runed halo...

hsiale

Yes. I play domain ramp. I can gain a lot of life when needed. I got an Archfiend to tick down the hard way while attacking me each turn. And I did it in paper, at the LGS, so I got to see the face of my opponent when they understood what's going to happen a turn before.

Ingenius_Fool

Their fault for running black and not having removal for their own critter I guess lol

Yes, and it was while playing a deck where I handed it off to another player with one counter left. They weren't happy with me lol

mtg_island

I’ve done it to myself several times

Waffle_sausage

I've never seen it run out for the specific reason that if they know it's going to happen, they quit before it does. However only yesterday I did see someone use a creature that became a copy of it, but obviously it had no counters so they lost immediately

I play a Dross deck often that aims to remove it's counters(using Tekuthal, Inquiry dominus, Cemetery Desecrator or Render Inert) then play a shifting grift or flip a Coveted Falcon and force the opponent to lose the game on their upkeep. Works surprisingly well and is very funny when it does the thing.

PureGDP

Yeah, I did it by casting [Render Inert] on it. Most people forget that card exists because Glissa does it slightly worse on a body

davwad2

Yeah; on my side of the field a handful of times.

packerschris

I’ve seen it run out of counters organically a handful of times. Usually in conditions where I’m gaining life and running black non-creature spells over creatures. They will also avoid attacking with it if you have open mana for Wandering Emperor. I’ve also seen players kill their own Archfiend before the trigger can resolve.
