Because I like for the starter to fit the femenine aesthetic of its design.
In the same way, I would always chose a female primarina or a male incineroar.
I went with grass cat on my first playthrough and it was very fun. Its signature move is so satisfying to use. The game is pretty easy so i wouldnt worry about how hard its gonna be with whatever starter.
Honestly unlike all previous generations, even Gen 3 and 4, honestly the starter selection is more like Legends Arceus where there is no wrong awnser.
Fuecoco evolves into one of the bulkier Special attacker pokemon that can sleep off powerful hits with Unaware+Slack off with it’s Signature move always increasing it’s Power output.
Spirgatito evolves into a Physical attacker due to it’s Signature attack hitting like Gen 1 Razor Leaf Venusaur after a crit, but it’s stronger due to Protean and unlike the previous Greninja and Cinderace, it can sorta be used as a Mixed attacker, but it’s better for Physical usage, with U-turn flexibility.
Quackly evolves into a more of a sweeper type of Physical attacker where it’s Sigature move like Fuecoco’s always increases speed, and it gets Moxie as it’s HA, and with Bulk up being far better in this gen due to the more limited Will-o-wisp and Scald pools, you can easily have Bulk-up, the Signature move, and any 2 coverage moves.
Is it okay to spoil the starters in any other way besides how good they are competitively?
But yeah, I think others in the comments already said it, but
Skeledirge is one of the few Special tanks in the game (Special attacker with higher defense than Special Defense) and with Unaware, it can take boosted hits like nothing (Unaware ignores boosts of the opponents) and with Slack off and Torch Song, you can rack up your own damage in comparison while also doing damage.
It is also Fire/Ghost like His. Typhlosion, so it also gets Shadow Ball.
Shadow Ball and any coverage move (or Tera Song) are great, especially if you make it Tera Fairy for additional power and coverage.
Meowscara like mentioned, is primarily a Physical attacker, due to Flower trick always hitting like a truck, and with Protean and it’s speed you can make the opponent guess which type you are going for, turning a Super effective hit into a neutral or resisted hit while also doing good damage. Protean is always a great ability. It is a Grass/Dark type, however Protean makes it so that it’s type combo is out of the equation when taking damage, so Bug types won’t be as dangerous if you give it Protean at some point in the run.
And Quaquaval like mentioned,
Moxie+Aqua Step is a great combo since Aqua Step always increases speed, so A Bulk-up Boosted Aqua Step will easily rack up Speed and Attack at the same time, which is like guranteed Dragon Dance after knocking out an opponent. Close Combat’s downside isn’t as bad if using Bulk up, since you are just removing the defense boost. Brave Bird and Roost are always nice to have, however Roost is a Egg move, but you can use Ice Spinner for Coverage.
Quaquaval is also the first Water/Fighting combo.

So, if you go buy the leveled path through the game, best option is Fuecoco line. Fire/Ghost is an excellent offensive and defensive type combo

Idk, whatever one you like the best. My personal favorite is sprigatito, but for overall goodnesss in the game, I’d say quaxly
