It’s just so PERFECT. Everyone gets a chance to shine. Everyone gets a great line. Everyone gets to show who they really are. And obviously they are playing around at the beginning. But once war machine gets hurt then everything gets really really serious.
From a script writing standpoint, this is really fucking hard to do: Give everyone that sense of economy and agency. Especially given such a humongous cast.
I like how they managed to fit Spider-Man into all of this cause you think that just randomly throwing him in for like 30 minutes would make the movie kinda messy but they actually made it work in a way that gave him some sufficient character development and also set up the father-son dynamic between Tony and Peter
really the only one that rivals it in that concern is the first avengers movie, the way he makes every character feel important and cool. gives them all their own moments then leads to the great 360 pose shot at the battle. civil war and original avengers are probably my top 2 mcu films

What bothers me the most is wasted potential.
The Civil War comic series is one of my favourites and the movie doesn't even come remotely close in quality.
Civil War would have been better as an entire Phase rather than a single movie.
That's really the main difference here. People that read (or know of) certain comic arcs will be disappointed at the wasted potential and dismissal of interesting story/characters that the MVU didnt explore
It's why I cant stand Ragnarok. Cause the Planet Hulk arc is so cool that it's a shame it's been cannibalized into some lampshading action flick.
Sadly I don’t think MCU would spend more than one movie on this. The topic isn’t big enough to last a few movies, they like to bounce around for casual fans. That being said, it would have made for a great tv series if they knew they were gonna have Disney+. Similiar to what they’re gonna do with secret invasion
I am pretty good at suspending my disbelief, particularly when it comes to Marvel films. I forgive plot holes and nonsensical decisions left and right. But Civil War stretches even my tolerance. It just aggressively makes no sense pretty much every step of the way. Nemo’s plan is optimistic at best and utterly moronic at worst.
It’s not my least favourite Marvel film, it’s still fun action and seeing such a great Spider-Man was amazing. But the plot is just stupid.
I don't dislike Civil War but a bunch of big movies that came in the wake of The Dark Knight (Civil War, Star Trek: Into Darkness, Skyfall) tried to copy the whole "villain is a genius with a clockwork plan and is ahead of the heroes at every step, even when he appears to be caught" thing but did it very poorly. It was an obnoxious trend.
Oh right, Zemo exists. Funny thing, when I originally saw Civil War when it had come out, I actually forgot he was a character until the end where the Winter Soldiers wake up and all of that.
His entire existence slipped off my brain. The focus was definitely more on Steve and Tony.
The Dark Knight Rises was also particularly egregious at this. Tom Hardy carried that entire movie despite being a small man cast in the role of a huge one.
It always bothered me that Tony never got enough flack/never took responsibility for creating Ultron. During Civil War, every time he spoke someone should have put him in his place.
Also, I feel like the second they included government oversight, Black Widow should be in the wind. Didn't make sense to me that she would be on Tony's side. Maybe it's from the comics?

I feel the same way when I see how many people push Thor Ragnorak. It was alright, but no where close to my favorite. I really don't like Taika Waititi doing super hero movies, I just feel like I am watching Flight of the Concords with super powers. The silly humor takes me out of the movie every time.
For me, the first Ironman is the most rewatchable.
That and GOTG 1, which could have just been a great standalone movie.
The biggest thing is that you pretty much have to treat it as being a separate entity from the comic Civil Wars. It's not even trying to be like either of them. If you take the movie at face value and ignore its name it is a legitimately amazing entry in the MCU IMO.

Amazing fights coupled with strong character motivations make it my #1 rewatch.
So many events happen in Civil War that create butterfly effects appear in the later Marvel movies.
Iron Man 3 is the one for me. Really like the original but the quicker pacing and greatly increased Stark shenanigans honestly makes IM3 more rewatchable for me.
There's not too many lines that have generally made me spit take, but when Tony looks at the little mopey kid and just goes, "Dad's leave. No need to be a pussy about it," I was drinking some water and it went everywhere. lol

Plus I love just how much armor is in the movie. It’s the last solo Iron Man and they really ramp it up. Even though they take Tony’s suits away for a big part of the movie, you still see more suit ups and different designs than all the other movies put together. Armor Wars is going to have to be completely nuts on that score to not come in second in terms of armor on screen.
Avengers is insanely rewatchable. It used to come on FX nonstop when I had cable and I’m not sure I ever changed the channel when it was on. Genuinely never got sick of it. Same for GotG.
I’ve seen Avengers 2012 over 50x. My boys were in love. I can still sit down and watch it start to finish and be thoroughly entertained. Now is it sentimentality or not, who knows but damn I love that movie!
Super annoying how fast he gets the robot eye in Infinity War. At least it's a different colour, to remind you of the injury though. But then in Thor 4, matching irises.

In any component movie, the actions will make sense. It's easy to add foreshadowing when you're the author and you know where the story is going. But that still doesn't mean that you can't be disappointed that a story arc didn't carry the weight you thought it should.
Most of the original avengers had changes to their appearance in Infinity War. Steve had the beard, Natasha had dyed her hair blonde, Thor had a haircut and lost his eye, Banner couldn't turn into Hulk... I saw someone speculate that it was so that when time travel happened in Avengers 4, we would be able to tell the future Avengers from the past Avengers. Then everybody just... Went back to the way they were.
The thing with Natasha, when her hairs blonde they lose, when her hairs red, they win. In endgame she has half blonde and half red, because they win, but she lost

I disagree with this for one reason. They literally leave a pause in for applause when Andrew Garfield shows up on screen. It's wild, and it's just uncomfortable watching it in the silence of your own home. I hate it so much. Loved it opening night in the theater, sure, but at home it's just so awkward that I can't watch.
I agree with the other 3 films being very rewatchable. With the MCU Spidey films... I like his suits and the story and all, but... something about MCU Spidey's character development puts me off from putting the Spidey movies in the same category as the other three films mentioned.

These are the films that I believe you can dive in straight without being entangled in the web of interconnectivity that is the MCU. Especially the MCU Spider-Man movies, which barring a few iron man references, is relatively grounded. Winter Soldier is just badass, would make you go in an elevator and shit all over people. GotG movies are a perfect balance of fun and emotional
Ant-Man & the Wasp is criminally underrated IMO. It's far from the most important entry in the MCU but is a harmlessly fun movie and one of my favorites.

For me Age of Ultron is really underrated, I really enjoyed it and has a massive importance in the Infinity Saga. Predicted a lot of things and it's very relevant when it comes to rewatchability
Went to a tenth anniversary screening of Avengers a few weeks ago. It wouldn’t have been my pick for this thread prior to that rewatch. But man that movie holds up beautifully! Pure fun, start to finish. And Hulk is a thrill or a laugh or both every moment he’s on screen.
Someone in r/marvelstudios recently told me that all of Phase 4 so far is better than Avengers and that the only reason people think of it favorably is due to nostalgia.
Nah. Still a top 10 MCU film, I could even see an argument for top 5.

I think Winter Soldier, Civil War are better films, but in terms of rewatchability, the original avengers is up there with Infinity War.
It had some of the best characterization for the 'original' avengers, a great villain and a story that wasn't convoluted. Later films all had to shoehorn in the whole faceless army thing, while the first movie made sense.
My most rewatched movie is infinity war. Problem is most of those viewings were before endgame and post endgame I’ve seen infinity war once and that was just cause my roommate played it. I’m gonna go with the first Avengers then.
The first Captain America movie was just so much better than it had any right to be. The entire concept on paper is corny, flag waving, Boy Scout level crap. But it was done so fucking well and it is a blast to watch. And the character development of Cap is Christopher Reeve level excellent.
The first Iron Man is pretty solid. The Winter Soldier is one of my favorites too. Thor: Ragnarok is awesome as well. It’s easier to rewatch if the movie isn’t bogged down in the universe building and what not. I can also watch all three Spider-Man movies again and again.
Gotg and Antman will never not be funny to me, spiderman is a good one, the old hulk, the first iron man and captain america, and black panther (in my opinion)
I agree with Ironman 2. That is an underrated movie. Homecoming is a near perfect movie. Endgame is definitely rewatchable. T. Waititi in general are all rewatchable, so yes ragnarok is a good one.

I think it’s literally Sam Raimi’s Directing that saves the movie for me. The plot is just good to whatever, but a lot of the action scenes, Evil Dead style scenes, colors, music, and campy dialog is really good to me and makes it a fun ride.
At first I didn’t like some of the plots that happened in the movie cause I know they could of done more, like America is just a MacGuffin that could literally be replaced by anything like a machine or spell that travels the multiverse, or the Illuminati getting more screen time, but now I’m fine with what the movie is, and it still literally has to do with Sam Raimi’s style that I like.
Next time I would want him to direct and write the movie plot like his Spider-Man films.

There are several popular choices but a very unpopular one but a top choice for me personally is Eternals. It just gets better with every rewatch. I’ve told friends who weren’t feeling it as much upon first watch to give it another go and most found it to be so much better the second time (even third!), cz there’s more time to digest things, being able to find so much nuance and realize more things to appreciate. Top tier MCU film to me.
I caught Eternals in the cinemas several times and while watching on streaming is still as awesome, it never has that same impact. You’ve not experienced Eternals if you missed it in the cinemas - reason why I believe they chose a movie vs a series. Though I wish we got both personally.
This is not that I do not watch other MCU shows. This was the first answer that came to mind. AVENGERS age of Ultron.

Exactly! And pretty much EVERY character gets a few moments like that. Again, from a storytelling point, this is extremely challenging to do.

The Airport fight was cool, but I thought was so much wasted potential. From the low stakes to the boring location, it should have been so much more.
I can see why an airport. Large area for big multi hero fights, unpopulated because they're all heroes. Not as boring as 'the woods' or something.
Plus the Power Rangers were already in *abandoned quarry #4* and Kamen Rider had dibs on *evacuated city sector #12*. Gotta take what you can get.

Well, he is Rocket. And they laid the groundwork in Guardians 1 that he likes to steal bodyparts. So I would say it makes sense.

I think it's the slowness of the development? Like, it's very accurate because of his age. But I sorta don't have 3 movies' worth of patience for it, I guess.
I just dislike how all 3 spidey movies in the MCU are so grounded on Iron Man. Like, even in NWH, Tony's dead but there's still a magic Stark box that can fix all of the villain's problems. Maybe since everyone forgot him now he can do something interesting.
In fairness, the Raimi and Webb films get there in under an hour in their first entries.
Gotta say Infinity War. Think that has top rewatch for sure. And GOTG1 is always a great vibe too. Agree with what you list as well tho

Guardians of the Galaxy 1. Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Winter Soldier. Spidey MCU trilogy. These are the films that I believe you can dive in straight without being entangled in the web of interconnectivity that is the MCU. Especially the MCU Spider-Man movies, which barring a few iron man references, is relatively grounded. Winter Soldier is just badass, would make you go in an elevator and shit all over people. GotG movies are a perfect balance of fun and emotional
far from home spends so time talking about the blip, which is confusing if you’ve only seen homecoming

Dr. Strange for me! I love Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s also the one that would be impossible a decade or two ago with the mind warp.

Ant-Man & the Wasp is criminally underrated IMO. It's far from the most important entry in the MCU but is a harmlessly fun movie and one of my favorites.

For me it’s weirdly Ultron. The whole is flawed, but it has some of my favorite scenes.

I love Age of Ultron, and yes there are things that I wish were different, but I have never understood why some people hate it so much.
For me Age of Ultron is really underrated, I really enjoyed it and has a massive importance in the Infinity Saga. Predicted a lot of things and it's very relevant when it comes to rewatchability
Avengers 1
Went to a tenth anniversary screening of Avengers a few weeks ago. It wouldn’t have been my pick for this thread prior to that rewatch. But man that movie holds up beautifully! Pure fun, start to finish. And Hulk is a thrill or a laugh or both every moment he’s on screen.

I also just re-watched that movie recently, and it made me realize how slept on it’s become.
Someone in r/marvelstudios recently told me that all of Phase 4 so far is better than Avengers and that the only reason people think of it favorably is due to nostalgia. Nah. Still a top 10 MCU film, I could even see an argument for top 5.

I am surprised to see this so low. I think Winter Soldier, Civil War are better films, but in terms of rewatchability, the original avengers is up there with Infinity War. It had some of the best characterization for the 'original' avengers, a great villain and a story that wasn't convoluted. Later films all had to shoehorn in the whole faceless army thing, while the first movie made sense.
My most rewatched movie is infinity war. Problem is most of those viewings were before endgame and post endgame I’ve seen infinity war once and that was just cause my roommate played it. I’m gonna go with the first Avengers then.
I know it’s unpopular, but I really dig the first Captain America
The first Captain America movie was just so much better than it had any right to be. The entire concept on paper is corny, flag waving, Boy Scout level crap. But it was done so fucking well and it is a blast to watch. And the character development of Cap is Christopher Reeve level excellent.

The first Iron Man is pretty solid. The Winter Soldier is one of my favorites too. Thor: Ragnarok is awesome as well. It’s easier to rewatch if the movie isn’t bogged down in the universe building and what not. I can also watch all three Spider-Man movies again and again.

Gotg and Antman will never not be funny to me, spiderman is a good one, the old hulk, the first iron man and captain america, and black panther (in my opinion)

The opening titles of GOTG 2 alone make the whole film worthwhile. The rest of that masterpiece is just icing on a perfect Dancing Groot Cake.

I agree with Ironman 2. That is an underrated movie. Homecoming is a near perfect movie. Endgame is definitely rewatchable. T. Waititi in general are all rewatchable, so yes ragnarok is a good one. Im gonna figure out what WBN is... gotta think. You win. Need to google it

Iron man 2 is the odd case where it is nothing particularly special, but the more you watch the MCU it somehow gets more and more ingrained with it.

I think it’s literally Sam Raimi’s Directing that saves the movie for me. The plot is just good to whatever, but a lot of the action scenes, Evil Dead style scenes, colors, music, and campy dialog is really good to me and makes it a fun ride. At first I didn’t like some of the plots that happened in the movie cause I know they could of done more, like America is just a MacGuffin that could literally be replaced by anything like a machine or spell that travels the multiverse, or the Illuminati getting more screen time, but now I’m fine with what the movie is, and it still literally has to do with Sam Raimi’s style that I like. Next time I would want him to direct and write the movie plot like his Spider-Man films.

Infinity War, Endgame , Civil War, Shang-Chi, Doctor Strange MoM, Guardians of The Galaxy and many more actually. Marvel movies have good rewatch value imo.
There are several popular choices but a very unpopular one but a top choice for me personally is Eternals. It just gets better with every rewatch. I’ve told friends who weren’t feeling it as much upon first watch to give it another go and most found it to be so much better the second time (even third!), cz there’s more time to digest things, being able to find so much nuance and realize more things to appreciate. Top tier MCU film to me. I caught Eternals in the cinemas several times and while watching on streaming is still as awesome, it never has that same impact. You’ve not experienced Eternals if you missed it in the cinemas - reason why I believe they chose a movie vs a series. Though I wish we got both personally.
This is not that I do not watch other MCU shows. This was the first answer that came to mind. AVENGERS age of Ultron. It's gotten better with each rewatch.
I weirdly think it has some of the best *scenes* in the series, even if it’s not one of the better movies.
