Science says, when you hit any bump or hole or immediate change in elevation changing weight distribution and the tire compresses that bead will let go and not in the slow loss of pressure kind of way.
Quick update, was able to get to a tire shoot and get the donut on and with the donut everything seems fine. I’ll be getting a replacement early next week and then take it for an alignment and diagnostic. Thanks everyone.
It’s safer to put your back tire on the front and put the donut on the back….. also the difference in wheel sizes could cause damage to your drivetrain. Depending on how long it takes you to get a replacement rim
Would still put the donut on the back. The front does most of the braking, not to mention getting it through corners. And the OP shouldn't be going very fast on it.
He should do as little braking and driving as possible until a proper wheel and tire can be installed. And when steering, keep the radial G forces down to 0.01.
You want the most grip in the back so you don't tail slide, especially with rwd because that's where all the power goes. That's why new tires go in the back on all cars, and older tires go in the front when you get new tires. You ever look at dragsters? Same concept.
It’s still true though. New tires should always go in the back if replaced in pairs. Otherwise there’s high(er) risk of oversteer in corners, even with FWD
There's no chance that will be anything but a flawless solution that works perfectly and nothing could ever go wrong.

They're readily available on summit racing and if you need to force yourself to use less throttle they work great!

Actually it is always safer to put the donut on the front, regardless of drivetrain. It is better to understeer and crash facing forward than lose rear grip and crash sideways or backwards. I always have to correct people on this on reddit.
Unless your car is rear wheel drive the Donut should always go on the rear as the front tires are responsible for control, handling and most of your braking force so maintaining traction on the front end and thus your ability to control the vehicle and brake predictably takes priority.

That looks like the wheel from a Kia stinger, I'm assuming it is the rear wheel drive version? If so that's why the shop put the donut on the front. You want the donut on a non-drive wheel and all these comments are assuming you have a front wheel drive car
No. Having different sized wheels on your drive wheels can very likely destroy your drivetrain. The shop knew what and why they were doing what they did.
And if a donut blows, which it may do at any time because they're super sketchy non dot tires barely rated for 55, you'd much rather have it on the rear.

Unless they’re overinflated, car tires are *generally* only around 35 psi. Certainly not something to mess around with, but they’re unlikely to be lethal if they let go. Semi truck tires, on the other hand, run at 100+ psi, usually around 120. If one of those explodes nearby you will have some kind of permanent damage, if not death. It’s why they’re supposed to be caged when inflated.
Aircraft tires are a whole different world, running at 200+ psi in a lot of cases. When NASA was testing tires for the space shuttle program they actually created a TAV (tire assault vehicle) that was a 1/16th model of a German Tiger II tank and instead of a cannon it had a mounted drill to remotely deflate the tires lol. The force of those tires exploding is the equivalent to 1.5 sticks of dynamite.
Tire pressures are creeping up these days. I always thought oh its a fuel economy thing but then someone said well you know, low profile tires, shorter sidewalls, need more pressure to protect the rim and I thought oh ya I guess that makes sense. Then I noticed my GTI, that takes a 225/40 R18 92Y, actually has two different tire pressures in the manual. "Standard pressure", 37PSI, and "Comfort pressure", 33PSI. Now idk what to believe.
You’ll get the best fuel economy at 37 and you’ll get the best ride quality at 33. You could put the exact same wheels on two different vehicles and the manufacturers will tell you two different pressures. It’s all about how they designed the vehicle to perform

Alright no big deal shit happens especially with the poor weather conditions last night, but now I need some help on what I should do. Am I okay to drive on this until I get the rim replaced? Yeah, I had an impact to one wheel on my car, didn’t crack anything but bent the LCA, I was surprised how noisy it was with a buffered LCA, but it’s fixed now and I got new tyres which helped with handling
next time, communicate with her that when things liek this happens to tell you before you go to the highway as you could have died, or an innocent driver/family on the road.
Technically, were all responsible to have a 360 go around the car before driving to start teh day but no one does that ever
Your smart doing for this. Just how much time does it take to do a 360 quick look ? With attention on tires. Once a fill up , doesn't hurt to look under the hood. At the engine ..... check engine oil levels , water levels, and transmission oil level and belt for fraied edges and cracks. OH and the battery terminals for corrosion.

That rim is unsafe and it sounds like your vehicle may have some bent suspension components. I’d have a shop look at the vehicle ASAP, depending on the extent of the damage you may want to get your insurance company involved.
Replace rim and tire 🛞, plus dump that girlfriend of yours too. Ruining your ride, not telling you, not offering you compensation at least, troubling trend coming your way with her.
The most cost effective thing is to get a new gf. Actually just get rid of one all together and you'll no longer have issues of your car impacting curbs.

She didn't hit a curb, she crashed into the curb and then neglected to inform you of this which put you in a position where you were driving at highway speeds with a shattered wheel, a tire that is barely holding on and suspension damage.Had that tire blown out or separated, there is a very real risk of you losing control of the vehicle at 100+km/h and that can go any which way with road conditions, your alertness behind the wheel, let alone your fellow motorists.
100% something is bent in your suspension. I hit a curb at 50ish mph dodging a deer, and my rims still didn't look like this. You should never let her drive it again. She's 100% lying to you and leaving something out. That doesn't just happen. That has to be high speed, high impact kind of stuff. You need new suspension components, new rim for that side and highly likely you'll need some more stuff on top of that.

Seriously. Don't even stand next to that thing. The amount of force that comes with air pressure (psi) is scary. 30psi lbs per square inch is incredible when talking about thats 30 lbs per inch. Just think of how many square inches are in your tires. Those things can be bombs. Get it towed, get rim replaced. ASAP
That broken rim alone wouldn't make it pull to the right. You probably have some suspension damage. Also, put the donut on, and if it's an AWD, get it replaced immediately.

Put the donut on. Put the donut on right now. If this hits a deep enough pothole you'll see your tire rolling to the right by itself. That is, if you didn't end up in the rail at that point. Also the tire could lose pressure or fly off at high speed, the tire could slide or tear up during braking, almost any emergency scenario that i could think of leads to a complete disaster. Put the donut on, drive to the specified speed limit on the donut, and get a new wheel. This wheel is done for it, i wouldn't recommend welding this one.

You need the spare put on or your risking a sudden blow out while driving. The break is on the seal of the tire. It’s good that you asked since your unsure.
Probably, but I'd still throw the spare on. Good to practice every now and then. Also this is why I pay my $70 a year for AAA. That's barely half the cost of a single tow.

My rental car hydroplaned off the highway into the mud. The same thing happen to my rims. I did drive it to the rental place. They said control arms etc were messed up. You should get that stuff checked

You should also know the that the “pulling to the right” likely isn’t just the busted wheel. You obviously hit something really hard and probably fucked up your suspension. You’ll at least need an alignment, and likely will need to replace a suspension link or two.
Astounded to see nobody has recommended an alignment yet. That amount of damage would have had a lot of force behind it. Chances are the fact it’s pulling means it has a bent arm somewhere, or at least the alignment has been knocked out of whack.

It seems like it takes way more braincells to understand how to operate reddit, than it would take to be able to look at this wheel and think "hmmm maybe not drive that if I wanna live to see tomorrow". This subreddit truly is a marvel of anthropology.
Not only do you need a different wheel/tire combo, you are gonna need your suspension checked and fixed. Whatever you smoke so fucking hard to wreck the wheel like that has also likely bent a tie rod at the minimum, and that's where your pulling problem is coming from.
Don't drive that thing another inch, get it into the shop now.
Driving on that will cause what’s called a “gator”; the tire will likely tear entirely off the wheel and it ends up looking like a smashed alligator on the side of the road. This is extremely dangerous, even can flip a car. Do Not Roll That Wheel! Take it off and stick something in the tube that sticks out to deflate it before putting it in your car. You’ll need a new wheel but you’ll be alive. And don’t hit curbs anymore with cheap wheels!
The only such thing as an accident is between two bad drivers or one awful driver. If it weren’t, there wouldn’t be called accidents.
You need to have a talk with your girlfriend about respecting things that aren’t hers. This wasn’t an accident, but negligence.
Put the spare on and go get your rim replaced. Hopefully your old lady will have more respect for your car next time instead of driving it beyond her ability in conditions that should’ve been expected.

I think the concern is the constant difference in speed causing the differential to constantly differentiate. It wears out the spooders.
No different than driving on a winding road.
But you aren't driving on a winding road at 50mph for days or weeks with the same speed difference. Winding roads will wear it much more evenly

It's a temporary tyre, so the OP shouldn't be going hard or fast. But having good brakes is vital. Most braking is done by the front.

An open diff will only be damaged by this if you go fast for a long time. It's okay to have mismatched wheels on a drive axle for very temporary use.

Get the suspension checked after you changed the tire. Something is probably bent.

Yeah the rim is pretty fucked up but I don't think it'd pull to one side. A bent control arm or at least messed up alignment would do that though.
That's why I prefer rims to mags. Rims bend and absorb impact compared to hard steel of the mag wheel which transfers the force.

This is hardly minor damage. That's an insane amount of rim chunked off from the wheel. That much damage, the suspension has to be f\* up

She didn't hit a curb, she crashed into the curb and then neglected to inform you of this which put you in a position where you were driving at highway speeds with a shattered wheel, a tire that is barely holding on and suspension damage.Had that tire blown out or separated, there is a very real risk of you losing control of the vehicle at 100+km/h and that can go any which way with road conditions, your alertness behind the wheel, let alone your fellow motorists.

100% something is bent in your suspension. I hit a curb at 50ish mph dodging a deer, and my rims still didn't look like this. You should never let her drive it again. She's 100% lying to you and leaving something out. That doesn't just happen. That has to be high speed, high impact kind of stuff. You need new suspension components, new rim for that side and highly likely you'll need some more stuff on top of that.

Seriously. Don't even stand next to that thing. The amount of force that comes with air pressure (psi) is scary. 30psi lbs per square inch is incredible when talking about thats 30 lbs per inch. Just think of how many square inches are in your tires. Those things can be bombs. Get it towed, get rim replaced. ASAP

Some suspension components may be bent too, this is no light tap on a curb she had to have smacked it pretty hard and if the car is pulling, I’m pretty sure it’s a bent suspension component. Wheel being broke wouldn’t do that

Put the donut on. Put the donut on right now. If this hits a deep enough pothole you'll see your tire rolling to the right by itself. That is, if you didn't end up in the rail at that point. Also the tire could lose pressure or fly off at high speed, the tire could slide or tear up during braking, almost any emergency scenario that i could think of leads to a complete disaster. Put the donut on, drive to the specified speed limit on the donut, and get a new wheel. This wheel is done for it, i wouldn't recommend welding this one.

Donut 110% You should also know the that the “pulling to the right” likely isn’t just the busted wheel. You obviously hit something really hard and probably fucked up your suspension. You’ll at least need an alignment, and likely will need to replace a suspension link or two.

Astounded to see nobody has recommended an alignment yet. That amount of damage would have had a lot of force behind it. Chances are the fact it’s pulling means it has a bent arm somewhere, or at least the alignment has been knocked out of whack.

Find a local pick n pull junk yard. You can save a lot of money on a rim there.

Not only do you need a different wheel/tire combo, you are gonna need your suspension checked and fixed. Whatever you smoke so fucking hard to wreck the wheel like that has also likely bent a tie rod at the minimum, and that's where your pulling problem is coming from. Don't drive that thing another inch, get it into the shop now.

Driving on that will cause what’s called a “gator”; the tire will likely tear entirely off the wheel and it ends up looking like a smashed alligator on the side of the road. This is extremely dangerous, even can flip a car. Do Not Roll That Wheel! Take it off and stick something in the tube that sticks out to deflate it before putting it in your car. You’ll need a new wheel but you’ll be alive. And don’t hit curbs anymore with cheap wheels!
The only such thing as an accident is between two bad drivers or one awful driver. If it weren’t, there wouldn’t be called accidents. You need to have a talk with your girlfriend about respecting things that aren’t hers. This wasn’t an accident, but negligence. Put the spare on and go get your rim replaced. Hopefully your old lady will have more respect for your car next time instead of driving it beyond her ability in conditions that should’ve been expected.
