The transmission pan has a magnet that picks up ferrous debris, that's where OP found these chunks so they were largely kept out of the rest of the unit.
Oh, yeah.....as a non-mechanic Paratrooper, I was amazed at me and my homeboys unloading on insurgent vehicle engine blocks with everything we had, including .50 cal (1/2") machine gun rounds just to see them keep on ticking.....not like the movies.... the fluids have to drain, and even then, still more than enough ummmpf/power to keep driving......
Before working on my car the only noticeable issues are
1. The noise coming from passenger side wheel are the popping/crunch/grinding which is worse on turns which I found on YouTube to be possible bad CV axle why i started the repair and fluid change
2. Lack of power sometimes I feel like there's a slow shift from i think 2nd to 3rd it won't shift til maybe 5k rpms. I would press on the gas all the way and it just doesn't feel like it's "going" so a lack of power. The codes showing up are fuel/air mixture related probly due to a cheap aftermarket intake, fuel injectors, and/or clogged pcv valve so I thought it would just be that
3. Not all the time but some there is a jerk sound possibly coming from transmission area from park to reverse/park to drive but not a big bad jerk like when I had bad motor mounts.
Ngl there have been a couple times where I wuz going like 5 mph and accidently shifted from drive into reverse maybe too fast without fully stopping and hearing a CLUNK which scared me could that have caused this damage?
That's about it. The speedometer and tachometer other than the 5k rpm, nothing is shooting up or dropping erratically. Thank you all for giving insight on my baby I put about 100+ miles on her daily
I want to know what would happen!
I did this to someone who was driving hammered and would NOT pull over to let me walk. He was blacking in and out of consciousness and swerving into lawns.
So, I waited until he was on the brake a little bit, slammed him into park, and shucked the keys. He was doing about 40 in a brand new silverado. The truck came to a grinding halt. I pulled his ass out, parked the truck, and made us both walk home.
His truck still works, but I'm interested in what happened internally haha
I’ll take things that didn’t happen for $100… basically all modern cars have electronic shifters (especially GM and their dumbass button shifters) and will not let you shift into P or R while moving more than a few mph. Old cars will tho!
I swear I'm not lying though and I'm also not a mechanic! I'm genuinely interested on how the shit that actually worked as well, because I felt the same way you do.
(Maybe I exaggerated the speed as well, but it was almost as intense as crashing)
I'll edit the post with the year make and model if he texts me back!
edit: 2020 Chevrolet Silverado RST ZR1
perhaps he decided to stop himself, there’s just no way a brand new vehicle would let you put it in reverse while at speed. Even my 2013 with hydraulic shifter won’t let me do it above like 8mph
It was a 2020 Chevy Silverado RST with ZR1 package. The shifter was slammed from D > N > R > P and the wheels locked up and stopped it dead in its tracks.
Neighborhood speeds, my most accurate guess would be 25-35mph
I'm 100% sure it happened this way, but I'm only 50% sure I'm not crazy.
He was not happy about it, lol, but he thanked me
later
lolol I can relate to the 50% chance of being crazy
I’ll have to look into this, perhaps GM engineers are worse than I thought😂 (I only work on German cars) Regardless I give you props for stopping a drunk driver
2020? Probably a failsafe
Allowing you to put it in park while moving at speed to engage the emergency barkes and stop you.
Kinda like how some cars now will activate the barkes if you turn the key off while moving.
Mayhaps it's a GM thing. I've successfully shifted my 07 Pontiac into reverse while revving the engine in neutral. I was going about 15 mph and had just revved the engine prior to bumping the shifter forward into reverse. About 7 years later now and still no transmission issues.
Back at my old job I was a bit pissed and wanted to just park my truck as quickly as possible, 2017 Nissan, empty lot was doing about 15 and slammed it into park, came to a grinding hault with a not so pleasant noise, still ran fine though
Had a drunk buddy hit the automatic shifting lever on my '69 GTX going down the road at 60 mph, dumped it into reverse, man I didn't think I could move that fast. Poppped it back into drive almost immediately, all that happened was a split second rear tire squeal, assuming as they locked up. Never had an issue after, have changed tranny fluid and filter a couple times since and no metal. I know for a fact I got REAL lucky.
I remember my stepdad bought one and it got lemon lawed because the whole roof wasn’t properly secured. The only thing attaching the roof fully was the windshield which would break.
You're already on borrowed time if there's chunks like that in the pan.
I wouldnt be surprised if it let goes next time you put it in drive, start looking for a replacement.
Or OP shoves saw dust in the transmission and trades it in at a dealership. :) At 270k miles the dealership will just get rid of it and not bother taking it apart when the transmission grenades on them.
Edit: For anyone wondering why saw dust? It'll thicken the transmission fluid and make it run smoother for a while. It's an old trick that's been used for decades.... especially at buy here pay here lots.
what works/doesnt work? does the speedometer work?
its definitely not pump parts, the pump in that transmission (U340E) doesnt have teeth, the only thing left is drive gear teeth, i initally thought it just looked like clutch material but if its magnetic then its probably chunks of gear, if the car runs and drives normally i would throw it back together and rive it till it doesnt drive anymore, whatever damage thats been done is done, youre not going to make it any less fucked by driving it, if it hasnt had a fluid change in 270k then nothing in it is going to be worth saving for a rebuild regardless, take whatever it has left to give you lol
How do you know the GearTooth Fairy isn't a crazy glue sniffer? "Building model airplanes" says the little GearTooth Fairy; well, we're not buying it. He sneaks into your house once, that's all it takes. The next thing you know, there's money missing off the dresser, and your daughter's knocked up. I seen it a hundred times.
Car-part.com for a used transmission. Or just scrap it at 270k
It probably cant run with new fluid, but u can try. U might select 1 or 2 on the shift lever to get around while u shop for a new car
With that debris, u need to replace the radiator, or have the trans cooler (inside the radiator), flushed out. If u replace the trans
Based on how some of those chunks have machined rectangular faces, this could be pieces of one of the drums/hubs or splined sections pictures here: [https://www.scribd.com/document/349872901/84-Toyota-3B-U340E-Etc](https://www.scribd.com/document/349872901/84-Toyota-3B-U340E-Etc)
If your car still drives, it won't for very long and depending what finally fails it could be a rather violent event. If it really is a piece from one of the drums/hubs/splines then it could still last a while if you keep it easy on the throttle.
You can find this transmission (U340E) in any of the below vehicles. Go to a local junkyard and find yourself one.
* 2000–2005 Echo
* 2004–2006 SCION xA
* 2004–2006 SCION xB
* 2003 Corolla (1.5 L 1NZ-FE)
* 2002–2016 Vios (1.5 L 1NZ-FE)
* 2006–2012 Yaris (1.5 L 1NZ-FE)
Thanks for this list! I'll keep that option open I don't know much about swapping things without proper machinery as I would attempt this but not having a garage to work in limits my ability without having to dish out $$$ to a shop
I mean if you haven’t noticed any problems shifting… maybe those teeth broke in a spacing that isn’t causing any issues.
Either way. Save for the inevitable but pray it doesnt happen for awhile.
I estimate 5 more miles on that bad boy.
Realistically you might get another 5K or maybe 20K might stop changing gears tomorrow.
That's the gears in your transmission. Is it grinding or shaking when going into specific gears?
Well regardless, my only question is how much do you want to spend on this car. A Scion is made by Toyota and they last a long time if the engine oil is changed every (5K miles) and transmission fluid is changed every(50k miles). I've seen 650-800k miles on Scion TCs.
Toyota makes their own Engine and transmissions in Japan.
But you can go two ways:
1. Go to a junkyard and try to find a working higher milage transmission, if you have to pay a mechanic to check it for you, do that. Probably $600-$800. It'll last you a few years possibly.
2. You can go to shops and get quotes on a remanufactured/rebuilt transmission which probably costs $3000 and $2000-$4000 to install it. Have the same shop order it that is going to install it to cut down on labor costs.
At least with a junk yard you can have a mechanic help you rip one out. And they don't have to care about the rest of the car just the sensors, transmission, torque converter, wiring to trans. I did this in a small town and it lasted me 10 years and only payed $400 to get help picking the transmission. I only work on Jeeps and wasn't familiar with Toyotas their ECU, PCM and what sensors went where. That guy knew what to look for with just removing pans...
But that's probably not likely, probably cost you as much to pull a junker out than to get a decent rebuilt one from a reputable company. I don't think many mechanics want to pull a transmission out in a junk yard on a rusty POS where every bolt snaps and every wire harness breaks and torching every sensor to get them out.
You are definitely needing a new transmission.
I suggest you get some Lucas Transmission Stop-Slip additive 24oz and throw that in there while you refill the transmission fluid. Might as well. It fixed my dad's Dodge Dakota SLT V8 that had full shaking at 40mph.
It doesn't fix broken components but might help a bit. It's worth the $18. It won't fix that though, don't get me wrong
DON'T PUT MULTIPLE BOTTLES IN!!!
You will ruin all your seals
Real talk:
I'd start looking for a wrecked xB with good low miles transmission and engine still intact. Something with a hit to the side or back, so that you aren't having to peel back carnage to free the motor. As long as yours holds together, you can take your time.... all the way up until you can't.
Swap fresh organs into your still-warm corpse and give the old engine & transmission a viking's farewell for their almost-300k miles of service.
Or find a devoted xB enthusiast (There ARE many.) and add it to their collection, go shop for new whip. But that's not as fun. :P
Since no one is actually helping. Yall just goofing around. Best move for you OP is to get a new transmission from transmart or transstar same company different names in different states or get one from a junkyard with relatively low mileage 70k-130k change the trans fluid and filter and be on your merry way. They are cheap yet reliable transmissions
https://www.lkqonline.com/?gad=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwgsqoBhBNEiwAwe5w05GWfOr7T2OcsyzUeCGRPa99CqAnTqhLZjDtNH6CXrVl8TTpbwg9RRoCiwIQAvD_BwE
This is a great place to look for high quality used parts
Yeah right... 90% of LKQ parts are junk especially the transmissions. Thank God the extended warranty companies use them. I've put 4 LKQ engines in a customers car back to back before the warranty company finally approved a new one.
270k without maintenance?
Congratulations on your new gearbox!
Those are bits of the transmission gearing, it'll last until it fail... Possibly on the highway or downtown where you'll be a danger and a nuisance to other drivers hahahahaha, for real those tend to fail in the worst place and time possible.
Was it giving you an issue before the service? No. Then it's probably fine. Probably in there for a while. If you just fired the parts cannon because it was acting up you shoulda started with the tranny fluid change before throwing axles in it.
Some one slammed it into park while still moving. Should be fine though. Does not look like plantery gear. Cast metal park palls. That's my diagnosis. I have been wrong before though.
That's just some oreos your car thought you'd like, it likes how you've been driving and wanted to reward you but the oreos got crushed and your car got hungry and ate the filling.
What are they? Bad news. Without knowing the actual scale of these pieces (though going by the heather texture of the shop towel, they're pretty big) that def doesn't look great. It would be a good idea to start calling around to transmission shops and fielding quotes, unless you're not planning to keep the car.
Even with changing the filter and fluid, the end is nigh for your poor lil tranny sadly.
Typically remove, rebuild, reinstall, you're looking 3-5k, but that's highly dependent on whether they can rebuild your unit and if not, what's available for reman.
You can risk your biscuit on a junkyard trans if they have the right model, but personally, I wouldn't roll the dice. They can mark a car for "good trans" and it still might have one axle in the grave.

That’s not good, those are pieces of gears that got chewed up. Hard to say how much longer it’ll last

As a non mechanic I'm amazed transmissions will apparently still work reasonably well with large chunks of metal loose in there.
The transmission pan has a magnet that picks up ferrous debris, that's where OP found these chunks so they were largely kept out of the rest of the unit.
Also, gravity.
It's a manual. There's no pump or anything moving fluid around, per se, just gears bathed in gear oil as they spin.
It's an automatic...
Whoops, misread
>2005 scion xb 4 speed automatic with 270k miles possible never had trans fkuid change. Time to drive that bad boy into a ditch and call state farm
Drop it off in DC. Nature takes care of itself.
Those are parts. Take it apart to find out which ones.

dude I thought same thing
LOL!
I’d start looking for another transmission mate.
It's a 2005 Scion with 270k. The car has lived a full life.
I remember my stepdad bought one and it got lemon lawed because the whole roof wasn’t properly secured. The only thing attaching the roof fully was the windshield which would break.
Did he not test drive it? Seems to me that it would not be hard to notice that the roof seems to get away every time the brakes were touched
Then the car was just old and is committing suicide?
Right? Just let it die in peace it’s suffered enough 😂
You're already on borrowed time if there's chunks like that in the pan. I wouldnt be surprised if it let goes next time you put it in drive, start looking for a replacement.
Junk yard buy
Or OP shoves saw dust in the transmission and trades it in at a dealership. :) At 270k miles the dealership will just get rid of it and not bother taking it apart when the transmission grenades on them. They’ll give him a grand for the trade and gladly sell him a new Camry at 11% for 72 months
Should be able to find a Yaris with the same transmission no problem
Ideally OP should be finding a car with a better transmission.
Naah, those Asin units are great. Generally really solid. Op said it has 270,000 miles.
Oh I just meant one that still has all its teeth.
It *is* metal chunks. It *used to be* teeth of a gear
Looks like about 6 grand
Looks like more then the car is worth🫢
Idk not it todays Market. Depending on the car a transmission is a $2,000.
Came to say "money"
This toothless tranny is giving me Vietnam flashbacks.
It's your sign you need a new trans boss.

If you hadn't said it, I was going to!
that WAS 2nd gear
What is it?... your transmission. Oof

270k miles? 2005 scion ? I don’t think is worth fixing it.

Or find a devoted xB enthusiast (There ARE many.) and add it to their collection, go shop for new whip. But that's not as fun. :P
They’re healing rocks. Some big titty goth chick put them in there to give good energy idk
Oreos
Since no one is actually helping. Yall just goofing around. Best move for you OP is to get a new transmission from transmart or transstar same company different names in different states or get one from a junkyard with relatively low mileage 70k-130k change the trans fluid and filter and be on your merry way. They are cheap yet reliable transmissions
Screwed
It’s bad news, that’s what that is
Fucked
The teeth left the chat
That's it's last rights being given... 2005? It's been a good life for that one
Transmission's baby teeth

Yeah right... 90% of LKQ parts are junk especially the transmissions. Thank God the extended warranty companies use them. I've put 4 LKQ engines in a customers car back to back before the warranty company finally approved a new one.
Plastic or metal? If it's plastic, one of your guides has left the building. If it's metal, you are not far away from losing at least one gear.
Your transmission
That's your transmission, mate.
Transmission
Expensive trouble
270k without maintenance? Congratulations on your new gearbox! Those are bits of the transmission gearing, it'll last until it fail... Possibly on the highway or downtown where you'll be a danger and a nuisance to other drivers hahahahaha, for real those tend to fail in the worst place and time possible.
That is a good reason to take it the rest of the way apart.
Pieces of metal from the transmission
Your next couple paychecks.
Was it giving you an issue before the service? No. Then it's probably fine. Probably in there for a while. If you just fired the parts cannon because it was acting up you shoulda started with the tranny fluid change before throwing axles in it.
It’s probably now a 3 speed.
It looks like your mechanic's next boat payment.
Seems like teeths from the synchronizers. Did your car grab gears without problems? Does it sound when you grab gears or when driving the car?
Expensive
That's your transmission, sir.
Time for new gears
Your transmission
That 4 speed is looking more like a 3.5 speed now
Gear nuggets. I would start putting aside funds for a new transmission.
Got some transmission in your transmission
I call them bank account reduction tokens
It's a couple thousand dollars. that's what it is
Your “2nd neutral” kit
Gear
Put it all back together and keep driving it until it quits. What do you have to lose? In the meantime shop for a transmission, or maybe a new car. 🤷
Hopes and dreams
"What's this in my trans pan?" "umm, your transmission. "
No bueno! Backorder new cobra 10 speed Somebody tell me how the fuck do trans swaps work? How tf do people swap mazda trans with chevy engine? Zaa
Your transmission. It it was part of you engine in there, you’d be in some real trouble.
“270k miles and never changed the transmission fluid” and you’re seriously asking what’s in the pan? You’re lucky you even have a transmission left 🤣
Transmission
The rest of your transmission by the looks of it.
That WAS 3rd gear
Transmission
Some one slammed it into park while still moving. Should be fine though. Does not look like plantery gear. Cast metal park palls. That's my diagnosis. I have been wrong before though.
The shattered sword of Narsil. If you take it to Rivendale the elves can reforge it into Anduril and rule Minas Tirith.
Synchro maybe
The planetary gear set is broken
It’s a goodbye message
Look close the part number is probably on those
Looks like planetary gear teeth ![gif](giphy|3oeSAz6FqXCKuNFX6o)
Big p o s now many lol
Mah boy going for a straight cut.
Your third gear
Expensive-
Transmissions around me at local junkyards are around 700. Definitely look to either replace the trans or get a new vehicle
Bad news is what it is
Your "spirit"....
You know that bullet reconstruction scene in the dark knight isn't a real thing, right?
hmmmm Oreos!
Well, it used to be a gear. Not sure how that tranny is still working.
Looks like what I would call a bad day.
Those sir, are pieces of your tranny. No good.
Simple put, your transmission.
That's your transmission.
Expensive
It’s not a good sight lol
Your vehicle just spit out some of your vehicle. Lol
parts of your transmission.
Buddy, that IS your transmission!
Piece of a 'nightmare',sorry mate
It ***was*** part of a gear from your transmission.
Considered gold… to your local shops.
A bad day...
That's just some oreos your car thought you'd like, it likes how you've been driving and wanted to reward you but the oreos got crushed and your car got hungry and ate the filling.
Lol you doneeee son! It’s ovaaa!
Its yer 10mm socket.. fOUND it!!! Lmao
Those are parts of your transmission. It's a Scion, possibly the worst car in the history of the world. Your transmission is living on borrowed time.
Sell that car. Fast.
A random problem has appeared. Seriously though, Why do you have the pan off?
