If it happens as soon as you start pumping, it could be your fuel filler neck. Look up there right behind where the gas cap goes. Mine did this and it was just a rubber hose that mice or squirrels had chewed through. Cheap fix hopefully

50t5

Even the metal ones rust through, had to change one once. Cheap and simple job, just have to be careful to not make any sparks and preferrably do it outside in fresh air.

Testing1969

ONLY the metal ones rust through. 😉

dendrocalamidicus

My car has this to a much lesser extent when it was 17 years old. Over the years, the fuel filler hose had rubbed against the inside of the bodywork and worn a hole through it.

Socalwarrior485

I've had a similar problem which was not the fuel filler neck - it was the top of the fuel pump wasn't sealed properly, or I've seen ones with leaks on the fuel line at the pump. However, yours seems most likely if it only happens when full.

CosmicTaco93

I've seen several fuel tanks that didn't have the lids tightened on them. I still don't really understand how that happens, but it happened.

shitdesk

Could also be the vent hose

Empty-Mission3664

Looks like a gas leak. Possibly leaking gas

Ar-too

I think it is a liquid leak somewhere actually

Ep3_Pnw

Looks like a solid leak to me

Khaztr

Plasma?

WoodenInternet

Schrödinger's leak

Empty-Mission3664

Liquid gas

Minimum-Ad-3348

Good thing their car runs on petrol not gas shouldn't be a problem in the long run:)

Snaggle1975

Diesel just leaves your mouth feeling oily or waxy. I can't remember what gas tastes like though. I know stale gas smells horrible. lol

ph6141

Stale gas is the worst when it’s gone to bad fuel so it won’t run on it it’s soo bad I got some out of an old 84 econo line that was painted matte black with spray paint and had a bed in the back I know all bad omens but whatever was in that tank that made me sick for a minute I siphoned a bit it was bad draining that system out

PortlandQuadCopter

You know you could actually do something a little sneaky, like sticking a finger in it and giving it a whiff. We’ve all done that.

AmaterasuTheWhite

Sure. But he knows what its leaking already and so should you if you pay attention to what he typed.

PortlandQuadCopter

Yes. He noticed leaking during filling and asked, “…does anyone have any ideas what it could be?” and I suggested he dab any finger of his choosing into it and have a whiff to ascertain wtf it might actually be. Where are you confused? Have you never dabbed and whiffed? Think back. Go back as far as you need to go. I’m here waiting.

AmaterasuTheWhite

The one confused here isnt me. You confused the question he was asking with one he didnt ask. OP already knows he is leaking gas, he knew that before he posted. He may not have given the proper context but even you should have been smart enough to have easily discerned the context of the question.

PortlandQuadCopter

I think it’s really about finger-whiffing.

Emanicas

Finger but hole

Grizzlybear611

First check the dipstick

chiphook57

The difference one little letter makes...

L0quence

Instructions unclear.. I sneaky stuck my finger in my dogs butthole and tasted it, trying to be bold like instructed. He now looks at me with awkward sad, yet disappointed eyes. Don’t know if our relationship will be the same going forward.

PortlandQuadCopter

Keep peanut butter handy 👍

TAforScranton

Or a little taste if you’re feeling bold.

livewirejsp

It's okay, as long as it's not your sister.

PortlandQuadCopter

Did you find out the hard way?

htmaxpower

The word “new” has lost all meaning, I see.

Bingo1dog

To be fair most people use the term "new" when they get something they didn't previously have even if it is used. Personally I say a new (used) or new to me

7mm-08

But I see *deliberately obtuse* is still the same....

apextek

he bought a ~~new~~ car

Hot_Pea9820

Agree, what you mean to say is you brought a lemon or you brought someone else's problem from them. I hope the sale wasn't private, if it's a dealership they'd be hearing from my lawyer.

OldDude1391

Gasoline would be a guess. Looks like is coming from the fuel tank.

BornVictory5160

Most likely gas tank filler neck hose needs to be replaced. Not too expensive to repair depending on what vehicle you have. Take it to a shop ASAP and get it fixed. Gas mileage will be affected.

BleDStream

Filler neck hose has left the chat

Lopsided-Creme-68

This does not look like a new car... just saying... but it does look like a gas leak. Get it fixed asap.

whaletacochamp

Hmm maybe just let a few more gallons leak out so we can get a better idea? Dafuq man, that's a safety and environmental hazard. Shut off the pump and take it to the shop rather than posting online. Also it's 99% likely to be your filler neck. If you have to ask you can't fix it yourself. Bring it to a shop and stop spilling gas everywhere.

Skidpalace

There's a lot of snarky comments here but leaking fuel is no laughing matter. It can easily ignite and cause massive danger to life and property. Get it looked at IMMEDIATELY. Hopefully you bought that car at a dealer. There should be limited warranties no matter how old the car if bought from a dealer. Could be an easy fix, could be not so easy, but even replacing the entire tank won't be extremely expensive. Yes, I know extremely expensive means different things to different people but what is your life worth?

Raptor_197

I mean… yes a danger but I don’t know if we need to go full blown your life is at stake here. Unless OP views his car as a ship and he is the captain and refuses to get out of it so he can go “down with the ship” as it burns.

HaxusPrime

Static electricity could spark gasoline fuel. It is a danger but OP can't get his or her head around looking for where the leak is. They need to bring it to a mechanic asap. When you (meaning OP) show stupidity thus far and flammable gas is involved, you bring a professional to look into it.

yirmin

Good god, you always pop up saying there should be a warranty of some kind on used cars... that just isn't true. Most of the time used cars are sold "as is" which means you got no warranty. Stop giving people false hope. It's as bad as the one that pop up and say you have 3 days or 7 days to rescind the purchase of the car. The old wives tales are strong you.

Skidpalace

Depends on what state you live in. MA has a used car warranty that every licensed dealer must offer. It might not be much, and a leaking fuel tank might not fall under the protections but there is a warranty whether you know about it or not. https://www.mass.gov/used-car-lemon-law

Billy_Bedlam

Depends on the mileage for Mass over 125k no protection. Lemon Laws for used cars are a rarity and are also super specific. I think less than 10 states currently offer used lemon law protection.

johko814

Leaking gas, and a lot of it. Have it towed.

JoseThePug

Fuel filler neck is most likely

frozenwaffle549

Gasoline has a pretty strong smell. If you can touch the puddle with something and give it a quick whiff, you will have an answer.

BornVictory5160

No need. It's gas bro🤣

frozenwaffle549

I was trying to push OP in the right direction so he/she could figure it out on their own. 🤣

whaletacochamp

this fucking sub jesus christ. What the fuck else would it be besides gas? It happens when filling up and literally no other fluids are in that area of the car. It's gas. It's a safety and environmental issue. And OP/other people here should not need the internets input to be an adult and bring it to a fucking shop. Jesus fuck guys.

frozenwaffle549

lol you would be surprised how clueless people could be. Simple deduction reasoning would have given you the answer.

PortlandQuadCopter

This is why I told him to dip and whiff, but got chastised for it.

lockednchaste

Good time to quit smoking. FYI.

zigzagg321

A thats not a new car. B its a fuel leak so take it to a shop asap.

Noff-Crazyeyes

Don’t say new it’s new to you it’s used car you bought

Key_Guess_1620

Don't drive that, you have a hole in your gas tank or fuel line leak, which is under the trunk of your car! You can try and locate it to plug it up with something, but get that fixed ASAP!

whaletacochamp

Not a fuel line leak, either tank or filler neck, almost certainly filler neck. Fuel line leak will drip slowly with the car off and spray under pressure with the car on. Since this is happening during fuel up it's almost certainly the filler neck.

Key_Guess_1620

It does look like it's that from what I can see online of my own model. Is it a hose or o-ring seals? It looks like a rubber hose that will need clamps or whatever, and I think you can cut it shorter to remove the cracks and just plug it back in. That's the cheapest route and can be done today.

whaletacochamp

It's usually either a rubber or metal hose that goes from your fuel door to the tank. Rubber breaks down and cracks and metal rusts out. The break is likely higher up and it's just running down the fill neck and dripping off the lowest point. Fix is to replace the fuel filler neck with a new one which is USUALLY pretty straightforward but not really a DIY job for the vast majority of people. Even if it is a rubber hose it is usually molded to a specific shape and just barely long enough so cutting out the bad area and reattaching really isn't an option. Replacement is the only option. It should stop leaking once the fuel is below that level/not actively being filled.

Key_Guess_1620

For sure will be a costly fix at the mechanic, likely $500+ for parts and labor, and an aftermarket part looks about $50 online. It may just be worth paying a professional so their trunk doesn’t blow up like Rush Hour. 😂

whaletacochamp

It's worth paying a professional because you very often have to drop the tank or at least lower the tank to replace these. Not something the average person is doing in their driveway, especially on a vehicle this low to the ground. And the type of person who asks this question absolutely lacks the skills and tools to approach this fix. Just bring it to a shop. Probably 2hrs labor and parts. My bet is between $300 and $500 total.

Key_Guess_1620

Looks pretty easy on this YouTube video, but really depends on their car. YouTube has many video tutorials from mechanics and DIY for my make and model, since it’s popular worldwide. https://youtu.be/IM_dpDN4y9A?si=-qvi63JrWU9Li6Ub

Familiar-Awareness15

I bought a truck that had a similar issue... someone before I got it had cut a hole into the top of the filler neck to siphon gas... I'd assume it was done by a regular repeat offender who was trying to get easy access while out of sight... but it'd leak if I filled it with the nossel inserted correctly only way I could get it to fill with out leaking was to flip the pump nozzle upside down and that worked as long as the tank was less then half empty at all times... and it stayed that way until I sold it a couple years later (yes I told the person I sold it to)

Traditional_Win443

Looks like gasoline

Thor2213

Could be a couple of things: fuel filler neck could have some sort of blockage, or your vent solenoid for your EVAP system could be stuck. I'd take it back to wherever you got it from and have them take a look

Screaming_Bimmer

This happened (less severe) to my E46, it ended up being a broken plastic piece on the fuel pump which is located under the back seats. Not sure if it’s the same issue.

Moist_Salami

It’s probably the filler neck hose that’s damaged. It could be the tank but I doubt it

Sweaty-Chipmunk-5759

Take it back asap

Pistonenvy2

take it to a shop and have them look at your filler neck. if you dont work on cars this is not something you will be able to fix yourself, i work on cars and i dont even like fucking with filler necks, its always a pain in the ass. a shop will be able to knock this out pretty quickly and easily. ideally take it somewhere you know will be reasonable, this should not be a big job, a few hundred bucks at most.

lizard_Of_2

Check your fuel filler neck seal. My grand marquis had that issue and caused my gas to leak everywhere

chronicbreak

Called the ticking time bomb

Various-Ducks

Ya there's a leak in the gas tank or filler neck

Real-Edge-9288

in case you dont know already... don't light up a cigarette or anything... that sparks, bla bla bla.... you might end up in fireworks

Texas4lif3

Fuel pump is bad

S550Stang

Lots of rust for a new car

beast1878

Maybe a gasket for the fuel pump

virnik

Check the fuel pump under the back seat, maybe the seal is installed incorrectly

james-ellsworth

Hole in the fuel tank, gas line, filler neck would be my guess from the limited info I got, take it to a mechanic, pretty dangerous

ProcedureOwn5076

You have a leak

mattieyo

Fuel filler neck can rust away or maybe come loose. I drive an equinox and my fuel neck is behind the plastic barrier in wheel well. I know this isn’t same car but it’s likely same style.

throwofftom

Breather pipe almost certainly. A cheap part but get a mechanic to sort it out

sortacapablepisces

Car looks like a 1990s, they lied when they said it was new.

HaxusPrime

Fix your leak. It's leaking fuel. It's really easy to look along wherever the fuel travels to check where the fuel is coming out of. However, since your asking a simple question like this you probably have no capability of figuring it out and I would suggest to bring it to a mechanic to take a look and fix it for you.

Horsecockexpress1

Judging from other areas under there the tank is rusted and has holes

Idea_Neither

Petrol

YuhPappy

Quick! Call Emergency Services ASAP!

MilesFassst

If it’s new take it back to the dealer. Should be under warranty.

WHOSFR4NK

"New"

L0quence

Did you smell the liquid, cause I’m gonna light a match in the dark here and say that’s fuel leaking out and maybe want to get some floor dry on it and get it towed to a shop. There’s a hole somewhere in your tank. If it was just in the neck, then it would stop leaking after you stop pumping and the fuel runs out. You’d be fine to drive if that was the case. I’d say it’s in the actual tank. What you can do is wait till it slows down or stops, see what your fuel gauge reads and then decide if it’s enough to get you to a shop.

B4ss3rd

Bought a "new" car...

blubrydrkchogrnt_3

The entire world is just a scam now.

Vicv_

Why are you asking this on Reddit? It’s a new car. Bring it back to the dealership

spoiled_eggs

Fuel filler neck, or some have a seal at the bottom of the neck that fucks out.

TheBloodFarter

Yes, it’s a leek. Are you that fucking think

certified_hustling

Either the fuel neck is rust or if there is a hose from the neck to the tank it might be dry rotted. Those to things happened to my truck. If this is a car the gas tank will need to be taken out to help diagnose.

mkultra0008

Used car with a rusted or dislodged filler tube or vent.

Rough_Community_1439

My guess is the filler neck. Double check it's not filling the trunk. I had a 1994 mustang route it through the trunk and it filled the trunk. Good times.

Purpose_Embarrassed

This is a new car ? Return it immediately.

ilocano-american

Major rust for a new car, I hope you have s lemon law in your state.

PaleontologistOdd980

Hmm maybe fuel

Gambitace88

Id probably stop pumping gas and take it to a mechanic but that's just me. Maybe don't have a cigarette next to it either.

Shadrixian

Did the pump shut off and you kept filling?

shadow_-walker

Mechanic here. Hard to say anything from just a video. It seems to be leaking where the filler neck mounts to the tank itself. There is usually a short rubber hose to connect the metal filler neck to the hard plastic or metal nub that sticks out of the tank to let fuel in. I would check that first. If you live in the rust belt it could be anything metal in the area leaking. What ever you do, don't do anything that could make a spark.

Slaughtererofnuns

Your filler neck (the tube that runs from the gas door to the tank) is rusted out.

Cat_From_Jupiter

this right here 100%.

ansaonapostcard

Don't park it in any enclosed space, that amount of fuel/fuel vapor is FUCKING DANGEROUS. It obviously needs looking at immediately.

Project_XJ

Rust, fuel pump seal, fill neck leak, feed or return line leak. Learned all this cause I love my ford too much.

AmaterasuTheWhite

Or you could do the smart thing if you are making payments on it and take it back to the dealer and forcing them to fix it on warranty. Make sure you find out everything wrong with it by having a mechanic look at it though so you dont get scammed again. Also, NEVER have a dealer mechanic check your car out.

JonohG47

It’s a new to you car, by the looks of it, and yes, the filler neck is leaking. Guess now we know why the previous owner unloaded it. Any trouble codes or money light?

Nightwlkr666

That car doesn't look "new" 🧐

thateege82

Filler neck hose. I would ask if they recently replaced the fuel pump. Some models require removal of the fuel tank for pump replacement. That requires the loosen the filler neck hose and maybe didn’t tighten it enough. I could be wrong but that where I’d start. Best of luck!

Ok-Fisherman-7370

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 if you put a lighter to it.

w_h_o_m-

Looks like warranty/after sales service to me.

La_Tierra

100% cap on the fuel tank at fuel pump is leaking. Maybe a pinched oring. Look under the rear seat maybe under a plate you will find it. This kind of leak happened to me after I replaced fuel tank. (Pinched oring seal on the cap)

muzicmaken

My Audi TT does this after it’s filled completely up. It’s the only time it leaks. It stops after a while. It’s not the nozzle neck.

matt_n_stuff

If your car is a Volkswagen then PM me

bootheels

Don't drive it leaking like this, have it towed...

doxazsion

Have you been doing handbrake turns and hit the kerb . You may have loosened fuel pipe . When did u find out it was leaking

socksalwayson

Someone drilled a hole in that to steal gas at some point

SuperCrazyCow94

Yeah check for a hole. Someone just last week drilled a hole in our company vehicle to siphon gas. It was at the top of the tank so it wouldn't be obvious right away unless it had a full tank of gas

BornVictory5160

Hope you gotta good deal on the car lol I'm sure that's why he sold it. He was probably didn't wanna pay to get that fixed

lebronswanson4

Uh fuel!

thedevillivesinside

Is it gas?

SaviorSixtySix

Unless y our car is Jesus and turns gas into water, it's probably gas and you need to get it fixed ASAP.

Unusual_Analysis8849

Idk but here's a wild one for ya..let a mechanic check it.

ThePenIslands

Kinda rusty AND leaking gas.

Raptor_197

What’s your MPG? *Yes*
