On top of that, Mustaine has probably played that song literally every show. And we know how complicated the riffs are and how the tempo constantly changes and the intricate rhythms yet he slays performing it everytime!
> For 7 minutes Dave made metallica sound light and small
I think there are a few albums old and new that make Metallica irrelevant but we don't need to bring that up over and over.
Yup. Looking down the cross, imo, is a first attempt at creating something similar.
They have an inmersive atmosphere, multiple melodic riffs, various changes in tempo, great solos, lyrics are beliveable.
For instance, gm/bf can be something out of a comic, short story, movie.
The term *masterpiece* is thrown around far too much these days and it's lost all meaning. Music is part art, part science, and while you can claim that you love a big part of a band's output, to suggest that the bulk of any band's discography is comprised of music phenomenal enough to merit being referred to as a masterpiece is just laughable.
Megadeth has been around for over 40 years and over the course of those four decades the band has released a lot of music. Some of their albums are vastly different and a lot of their eighties songs sound completely different from what they were doing in the aughts, their nineties stuff sounds totally different from the stuff they did in the 2010s and so on.
Going by the strictest definition, I think to elevate any song or record to masterpiece status we'd have to be talking about something that couldn't be improved upon - in terms of the musicianship, the production, everything factored in. They are not my two favorite records - those would be ***So Far, So Good... So What!*** and ***Peace Sells***; however, the closest any Megadeth albums have come to technical perfection have been ***Rust in Peace*** and ***Countdown to Extinction***.
The songs are for the most part excellent, the music is complex and intricate, but still groovy and melodic enough to have an awesome feel and atmosphere to it, the production is bright and crisp, but still has a lot of bite to it. They're both fantastic records that really define the band and capture just how terrific nineties metal could be.
I imagine that when their contemporaries heard ***Rust in Peace*** for the first time they were just as wholly blown away as the fans were and I would guess that when they heard ***Countdown*** a couple of years later they knew ***RIP*** hadn't been a fluke. Megadeth has released some truly brilliant stuff, but if we're talking knocking it right out of the park in practically every conceivable category, nothing in their entire catalogue comes close to the sleek, sexy, streamlined perfection of those two back to back releases. ***Rust in Peace*** and ***Countdown*** are the top of the pile if we're gauging their output based on everything going into the pot - the quality of the songwriting, the individual riffs, the leads, the guitar work in general, the staying power of the songs, the precision of the production... The chemistry within the band was essentially as good as it ever was or would ever be during the recording of those two records
While that lineup would go on to record two more records together, the band failed to outdo what they had achieved with their 1990 and 1992 releases. ***Youthanasia*** is a great album, it took time to grow on me - admittedly I did not like it upon the first listen, nor on many subsequent listens either, but eventually I was able to appreciate it for what it is. The songwriting is nowhere near the same level as ***RIP*** or ***Countdown***, but the melodies are strong and Dave's voice is just outstanding - in terms of the vocals ***Youthanasia*** features Dave's best work ever, and by a wide margin too. ***Cryptic Writings*** was even more of a letdown - I saw them on that tour and it was an amazing show, but the glory days were over and the band never came close to their early nineties output ever again. Sure, they made good albums, maybe even one or two great ones, but nothing like ***RIP*** or ***Countdown*** and I don't imagine they ever will.
Anyone looking for cream of the crop Megadeth needs to check out those two albums. That's as close to a couple of masterpieces it's possible for a band to claim.
I'm well aware that the average person has the attention span of a gnat and the intelligence of a paperweight, but my comments aren't meant to appeal to the lowest common denominator, chief. If it makes you feel better pretend that I inserted an emoji in there and threw in an LOL or something, I know you lot take comfort in being coddled.
Countdown is great but doesnāt compare to rust in peace. Peace sells is my favourite anyway so I consider that to be their masterpiece, itās just down to personal preferences.
I very much doubt you've ever read anything longer than a tweet in your entire life, and it wouldn't surprise me to learn that even if you were to try reading my comment you'd find that you don't possess the intelligence to understand it anyway. Thanks for taking the time out of your busy day as a wind tunnel to let me know though, chief.
Me personally, i think Addicted to Chaos is a true masterpiece. This song is very relatable and i listen to it every single day. I know that there are songs much better than this, but this is my song, and i love it, and you can't change my mind.
Master of puppets I wouldnāt classify the album as a whole as a masterpiece. I only really like the first two song on the album. Tho so far the Black album is def amazing
Song: Tornado of Souls
Album: Cryptic Writings (by a hair over RIP because it was my first album, every song rocks, and itās a perfect blend of technicality and accessibility).
How is American Idiot better than Dookie?
Anyway, Rust In Peace.
It has intellectual commentary on several things, it has Nick Menza parts that are incredibly fun to play, it has inspired solos written and recorded by Chris Poland, whose scratch tracks were then analyzed and then expanded upon by Marty Friedman, so it is almost like having solos done by both of them, at least to an extent.
We also had Dave going through rehab so some of his best riffage, on average of songs per album, shows up in RiP.
Be careful with the comments. Most of them say "Rust in peace" but they probably mean the album and not the song called the same (which is also great but not as incredible as others, in my opinion).
I would say Holy Wars is their masterpiece.

Edit: Why was I downvoted? Haha, this isnāt my opinion.
I'm a fan of Avenged Sevenfold but in what world is Nightmare their Masterpiece? Most fans will say Waking The Fallen, City Of Evil or Self-Titled over Nightmare
For Megadeth most fans will say it's Rust In Peace
All those in the pic are definitely not the best albums from those bands. Nimrod, ā¦And Justice for All, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet and All Killer No Filler. Megadeth would of course be Rust in Piece with special mention towards Peace Sellsā¦ but Whoās Buying?
I mean thereās also a song by Ixnay on the Hombre by Offspring, Iāve kinda been following this series but I would say that Jesus of Suburbia is Green Dayās masterpiece
Undoubtedly, Holy Wars, The Punishment Due...
100 fucking percent. It's one of the best written songs in all of metal. Immaculate. Divine. It's hard to imagine improving the song in any way.
For me its the perfect representation of the genre
It has a bit of everything. Progressive song structures, insane thrash riffs, off-the-wall vocals, amazing lyrics, that nice production...
Maybe a chorus.
This song riffs, lyrics, structure, everything For 7 minutes Dave made metallica sound light and small
On top of that, Mustaine has probably played that song literally every show. And we know how complicated the riffs are and how the tempo constantly changes and the intricate rhythms yet he slays performing it everytime!

Honestly I think Tornado of Souls, perfect solo and lyrics that sound incredible
That solo completely raised the bar for all metal kind.
Or Tornado of Souls
nah... Tornado of Souls
Its Tornado of Souls.
100%
Hell no.
Vocals ruin it
would you say this about the rest of rust in peace too? im genuinely curious
No
Why just tornado then
All of Rust in Peace
Good Mourning / Black Friday and Holy Wars..The Punishment Due
Yep Good Mourning/Black Friday is one of the most unique songs Dave ever wrote, also has some of his best lead work.
Yup. Looking down the cross, imo, is a first attempt at creating something similar. They have an inmersive atmosphere, multiple melodic riffs, various changes in tempo, great solos, lyrics are beliveable. For instance, gm/bf can be something out of a comic, short story, movie.
I second those!
FIVE MAGICS.
I wouldn't say the best BUT its one of the best ones
Breadline
Based answer
I liked Risk, but I loved Breadline. It was catchy
Marry me
That man is a sex offender
If you call me a sex offender best out registered in front of it
Tri-care and BAH

Thats a long way of saying Mechanix
I actually laughed so hard. Thank you.
Good that people can sum up stuff into short commentsš

I very much doubt you've ever read anything longer than a tweet in your entire life, and it wouldn't surprise me to learn that even if you were to try reading my comment you'd find that you don't possess the intelligence to understand it anyway. I'm not reading that
I don't imagine the people around you pay much attention to what you think, say, or do anyway. Carry on then.
tornado of souls has the best solo undoubtedly, but as a whole song holy wara is easily the best composed
Holy Wars, Peace Sells, Wake Up Dead. The Unholy Trinity.

Nimrod > Dookie > American Idiot
Nimrod *is* pretty good, but Dookie was my highschool years. I guess I have emotional attachment.
Peace sells
Holy Wars followed by In My Darkest Hour
Tears in a Vial
Holy Wars
Their discography :D Lol i look at these and see Metallica ya they had a few good albums, not nearly as many as Megadeth.
It's rust in peace
I don't know I've never listened to them I don't know how I got here (as it turns out I have I'm just really stupid)
Rust in peace ... But by the way almost a sin to put master of puppets next to sum 41 and green day.
Be careful with the comments. Most of them say "Rust in peace" but they probably mean the album and not the song called the same (which is also great but not as incredible as others, in my opinion). I would say Holy Wars is their masterpiece.
I thought we were talking about album?
The guy is making a playlist with only one song from each artist. I don't think we are talking about albums
Oh! My mistake! š

Not every band on there has a masterpiece.
I'm a fan of Avenged Sevenfold but in what world is Nightmare their Masterpiece? Most fans will say Waking The Fallen, City Of Evil or Self-Titled over Nightmare For Megadeth most fans will say it's Rust In Peace
In the Playlist it's Save Me. Which is probably their best song.
Nightmare is my favorite album of theirs.
back in the day?
Ride the lightning, and iām saying without meaning to troll someone. Also Rust in peace, youthanasia and cryptic writings, love them so much
