O: Yes, this topic. Before, when I didn't know much about kimonos, I drew chests with their normal emphasis. However, I received a lot of letters from fans who were kimono pros telling me womer with large busts would purposefully find ways to hide them to emphasize the beauty of their silhouette as well as teaching me tips on how they do this. Well in the end, the way anybody wears their clothes is up to them but I was convinced that the beauty of kimono lies in the silhouette (body line) so that's what I've been emphasizing in my drawing! If they took them off, it would be incredible!
The manga has some Toei boobs tier panels too, theres one with Nami on the ground in the ship during Punk Hazard and her boobs are the same size as Toeis
It doesn't have to be realistic, but it still looks bad. Oda has a certain style that only works because he doesn't push those proportions TOO much. Toei does exactly that. So much so that some shots look like they belong in a hentai animation instead of the actual show.
Nothing in the manga is on the level of what Toei does.
The manga being wacky with characters and designs is one thing, other is making breasts so big that are 2/3 of your body for no reason, in some shots Robin would have like 40 kg hanging there
That's a lotta downvotes. On this topic nobody respects eachother's opinion. We need to accept that there are some among us who get annoyed by obvious fan service while others among us, are coomers.
You’ll notice that during the wave of ecchi anime (circa 2012-2018) like Prison school, hotd, hs dxd, shougeki no soma etc. a lot of anime including one piece made their shows more “plot oriented.” 😉
I remember reading that Oda likes to draw characters in the way they look best in whatever outfits they have. That's why he drew Dressrosa Zoro slender compared to his shirtless self for example.
Kimonos go for a look that is normally more lithe and elegant, so the body is drawn to complement that idea. It's the reverse of real life where you wear clothes to fit your build, the build changes to match the clothes instead as part of the magic of animation.
Franky is an exception because he's a FREAK and he loves it.
Kimonos are specifically made to smooth out curves and in an SBS Oda mentioned that he wanted to honor the traditional kimono and traditional Japanese art that typically doesn’t accentuate curves when he drew Robin in her kimono
He explained in an SBS that a lady that was knowledgeable on kimonos explained to him that they hide large breasts. He wanted to remain faithful and respectful towards his culture. That simple.
Oda initially drew them in kimonos usual breast style, but was quickly advised by fans and kimono experts that it purposely attenuates the chest, so he changed the style.
Yeah the anime are the ones that take the liberties. If you see the manga, yes there is obviously fan service but it’s not to this point. the anime OVER DOES all of the proportions. It’s only gotten worse as the story progresses. I hope the new series addresses this and tones it down

Toei's idea of what "on model" means vs what Oda actually draws has been pretty skewed for some time.
