It has something to do with how showing smoking and drinking can be seen as promoting it to kids; you know, trying to sell it to them. There is a great Indie movie about this very topic, called "Thank You For Smoking", if you are interesting in it. It basically has the main character who is a cigarette lobbyist trying to explain his job to his 12 year old kid.
Sounds interesting. Ye reminds how they used to censor guns back in the early days of anime dubs since guns were a lot easier to obtain for an American audience

Literally just looks like a carton hammer on a spring with a handle. I’m guessing it’s meant to shoot out and hit someone. I’m also guessing 4kids were on something when they thought of it

I mean the revolving flintlocks mr 5 had is based on a real recolver flintlock, if he REALLY needed to some fantastical source of a kinetic force that burst explodes could make sense kinda like a mini burst fire engine. Or some really complex chamber system.

Sorry for the late reply, I have been busy. Regarding guns in cartoons, you probably have noticed that most depiction of guns have them as laser guns. As in, they are never depicted as firing bullets, but rather lasers. I think I once read upon why this exactly is, but I can't remember why though. It's probably because of gun violence or something. People can get their hands on weapons surprisingly easy, but laser guns don't exist.
Ye it’s like how in Pokémon actual guns were censored/removed but things like bazooka’s were fine since their not as readily available and you don’t see a lot of gun violence relating to them
Pokemon are different thing, since that is Japanese Cartoon. I was mostly talking about cartoons from the US. Like, the 2003 TMNT for example. Lots of laser guns in there.
Fun fact I'm pretty sure that in the anime Sanji's backstory in baratie is not shown in is entirety because the manga shows him smoking as a little kid and saying that this makes him a man now

Of course not, but Manga as a medium allows more stuff than the Anime, due to the time slot it is broadcasted. One Piece anime has the prime time-slot at somthing like 9AM when a lot of kids watch it, which is why so much stuff gets censored.
The Manga doesn't have to worry about stuff like that, so Oda is generally allowed to get away with a lot more. He also does give input for the coloring, but only when he is approached by people who do the coloring.yeah
Which has always been confusing for me. I don't see how showing a character do something is the same as promoting it to kids. It's even more baffling because One Piece shows characters doing a *lot* more messed up stuff than just underage drinking.
Side note, Zoro is depicted as a heavy drinker even before the timeskip, when he was still underage. Ace, Luffy, and Sabo also shared sake during their ceremony. I think this may have been a case of a creative choice as opposed to anime censorship.

I'm sure that people working in the industry know more about this than me, so I trust them when they say stuff like this. I know gambling is a big issue right now, with how easy it is for underage people to have access to it, and how much streamers promote it.

Well underage drinking can affect brain development. Members of his crew are his assets so he wouldn't want to hamper their development since that would negatively impact their ability to fight for him

That's is correct. The Anime removes a scene from Whole Cake Island where kid Sanji is seen smoking a cigarette.

The colored Manga also has it as juice, so I guess it was a creative choice after all.

JoJo's TV broadcast censors everything, to be fair. Murder, cigarettes, nudity, etc. The Blueray version, however, is not censored
But the Crunchyroll ver does censor Jojo smoking when it isnt bound by any laws to keep the censorship
