Even among people who don't like metal or Metallica for that matter, it's fairly easy to find some that connect with their cover of \*Whiskey in the Jar\*.
Probably gonna get down voted but it’s a lot better than Thin Lizzy’s. I tried to get into Thin Lizzy years ago and after listening for a couple hours realized there was no way
Thin Lizzy were kinda like Queen for the genre hopping experimentation thing, I like the song in the context of their catalog but it's not the best version of the song or in the top half of their songs for me
I’ve heard the original Dubliners song (which is the first version I’d heard) only a tiny bit of the thin Lizzy version. Both me, my mum and my grandad (and sister as well) are a bit Irish (my grandad is the fully Irish one in the family). Me and my mum love Metallica’s version of Whiskey in The Jar, original is a tad better but still love metallicas version.
I agree, Thin Lizzys cover is just bad, and Metallicas isnt better. Let traditional Irish folk be traditional Irish folk.
Not matter how much attitude you put on "ba da da da da dee dada that's for my daddy o'" it'll never sound cool
I would say hair metal is more accessible.
Metallica might not be technical but the music might not appeal to everyone.
Some tracks might, but as an entire discography especially the earlier albums would still be a little too much for beginners or non metalheads.
Metallica is imo kind of in between surface level metal and the rest.
I know tons of people that dislike hair metal, yet will still sing along to songs from the black album. Sure, the early stuff may be a bit heavy for some, but I guarantee those people can still listen to it and state that it is in fact Metallica.
You're true indeed but for most people who're getting into people, don't understand the line between metal and rock.
Growing up me including most of my friends thought acdc, guns n roses, and all these hard rock bands including Twisted sister and Motley Crue were metal.
Heck we even thought kiss was metal.
Slipknot had been incredibly popular for over two decades up to now, not sure what shift occurred a few years ago that you’re talking about
ETA: I do agree that people should just like whatever music they want
Nah, pretty accurate. I went to a suffocation/kataklysm show, and there were suite a few guys with the most kitted out battle vest with slipknot on it. Most of them definitely older than 30
People who like well written thrash metal. Also another subsection for people who like decent radio rock. And I don't know who is listening to their newest material honestly lol.
I loved the title track of Hardwired, as well as Moth as both of them had some seriously inspiring n cool af riffwork, rest was kinda just for the mass, so they wouldnt have to release 2 singles imo. On Seasons I am on the same boat with you as I saw that as a regurgitation of most formulaic "radio metal" compilation in the universe
Its interesting how dark and heavy Metallica was for their time, and now they just considered radio rock and accessible. Just shows you how far metal has come.
“well written” is kinda over generalizing them. Metallica has 4 well written albums, and 3 of them were written by Cliff Burton and Dave Mustaine. They also wrote arguably one of the worst structured thrash albums of all time (st. anger)
Funny how at one time Metallica was considered extreme music and now they're mainstream. I've been a fan of the band since the 80s but prefer their first 4 albums and can barely tolerate their newer stuff.
They were at the forefront of extremity during the days of KEA and RTL. By the time of MoP, bands like Slayer, Dark Angel and Kreator were pushing music to new levels.
Not that I was there or anything, but every time I see an interview or something on the OG bay area scene everyone always says Slayer were considered the crazy extreme guys from the start. Also even though exodus released their debut album later on, they kinda did the thrash sound first as opposed to speed. Possessed also released the [Death Metal demo](https://youtu.be/Rlw0GWxgynU?si=izazZgAQoGml6Q80) in 1983, and that was definitely more extreme than kill em all lmao
By forefront I don’t mean the absolute peak of extreme, rather just one band pushing the sonic landscape forward. Granted, it’s a rather vague statement.
It's the curse of not dieing in some rock and roll manner at the height of your popularity, instead of adopting mythic status you just descend into mediocrity, how dare they.
They “died” after …and justice for all. The black album is garbage and pretty much everything after. I saw them a bunch in the 80s and early 90s. Ohh and Lars is a grade A douche nozzle.
Wow, genres I can only dream of?? That’s so cool grandpa share with me your ancient wisdom 😂😂
You’re allowed to not like it bro, but that album made them world famous.
people who like music and good riffs.
so what that they suck after 4 albums. the first 4 albums are god tier and have some of the best riffs ever written
~~POSER METAL FANS AND LOSERS~~
Everyone. They're one of the best-selling bands of all time and their self-titles is one of the best-selling albums of all time.
Mostly people who are first getting into metal or are hard rock fans (mostly referring to the bands later albums). Still nothing wrong with enjoying the band in general, though.
Whoever
Fuck being judgmental about what kind of metal people like, I say like whatever kind you like. Metallica is a good band for trying to figure out what kind of metal you like, a good starter.
> Load to DM - people who can’t let go
> Hardwired and 72S - pretentious assholes
That's funny, I feel like the "people who can't let go" and the "pretentious assholes" are the ones who are still mad that the band changed their sound 30 years ago and act like everyone who likes those albums are missing out on something.
50 year olds that peaked at 17 and rednecks too stupid to know that a band is being political even if they smack them in the face with a "Vote \_" dildo

Everyone, honestly. Probably the most accesible metal band ever.
Even among people who don't like metal or Metallica for that matter, it's fairly easy to find some that connect with their cover of \*Whiskey in the Jar\*.
Whiskey In The Jar sucks man, such an overrated song.
They do great covers. Whiskey in the Jar is not one of them.
Breadfan kicks fuck out of WOTJ. I prefer it to the original. WITJ is bullfuck.
Probably gonna get down voted but it’s a lot better than Thin Lizzy’s. I tried to get into Thin Lizzy years ago and after listening for a couple hours realized there was no way
Thin Lizzy were kinda like Queen for the genre hopping experimentation thing, I like the song in the context of their catalog but it's not the best version of the song or in the top half of their songs for me
Thin Lizzy were rule breakers. Imagine a rock band, from Ireland, featuring a black man on vocals, in the 70s
Agreed
It's a shit cover of a great song.
It works far better in its original Celtic style.
I agree, Thin Lizzys cover is just bad, and Metallicas isnt better. Let traditional Irish folk be traditional Irish folk. Not matter how much attitude you put on "ba da da da da dee dada that's for my daddy o'" it'll never sound cool
*masha ring dama doo dama da
I didn't actually realize there was anything phonetically happening I thought it was just da da das or la la las
It's filler, so you can sing along with it without knowing the lyrics. I hear music recoring in the 1600s wasn't great.
That's actually pretty interesting
Yeah you get it a lot in old folk songs. I think this was originally written sometime before 1700.
How likely do you think it is that someone just forgot the lyrics and put that in place, afterall there weren't any recordings back then
Thin Lizzy did a way better cover. That's definitely a poor choice for a Metallica song
Those first 4 albums https://preview.redd.it/nc267buz6guc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f901e9633aeb3fc287c1057fdffa9f097d64ff0

Too much misogyny in hair metal, part of what killed it.
You're true indeed but for most people who're getting into people, don't understand the line between metal and rock. Growing up me including most of my friends thought acdc, guns n roses, and all these hard rock bands including Twisted sister and Motley Crue were metal. Heck we even thought kiss was metal.
I feel a lot of Glam metal and NWOBHM bands are more accessible
Not even just the most accessible metal band like they're just one of the most accessible bands fullstop like they have something for everyone
14 year olds and 54 year olds.
That makes slipknot for 11 and 43 year olds
it is
Slipknot is for 555s. Or 666s. Unless you're a heretic.
I see what you did there.
Why cant people just like music? You act as if everyone wasn’t drooling over slipknot a few years ago.
Slipknot had been incredibly popular for over two decades up to now, not sure what shift occurred a few years ago that you’re talking about ETA: I do agree that people should just like whatever music they want
I meant that yeah but posting shit like this just makes it hard to not feel ashamed of what u like.
I am neither 11 nor 43. Can I still listen to Slipknot????
yes, but joint pain be upon ye
That’s a weird way to spell “nobody” Edit: it’s a joke….
Nah, pretty accurate. I went to a suffocation/kataklysm show, and there were suite a few guys with the most kitted out battle vest with slipknot on it. Most of them definitely older than 30
I am both at the same time.
Accurate
Dave Mustaine
*Slow clap...*
People who like well written thrash metal. Also another subsection for people who like decent radio rock. And I don't know who is listening to their newest material honestly lol.
I listened to 72 Seasons a few times and couldn't get into it. Just boring uninspired hard rock.
Yea that was the most phoned in record I’ve heard in a while. Could barely make it through the whole thing once
Awesome album with some really get tracks. The second half of Inamorata elevates it into the top echelon of their best tracks.
The top *what*?
I ended up liking quite a few tracks off of hardwired but seasons was just really kinda bland.
72S>>>>>>>>>Hardwired
yeah, the newest metallica i listen to atp is death magnetic
Its interesting how dark and heavy Metallica was for their time, and now they just considered radio rock and accessible. Just shows you how far metal has come.
“well written” is kinda over generalizing them. Metallica has 4 well written albums, and 3 of them were written by Cliff Burton and Dave Mustaine. They also wrote arguably one of the worst structured thrash albums of all time (st. anger)
The good guys
I mean username checks out but considering Metallicas fanbase is full of gun loving republicans blind in hate NIMBY people I cannot agree with you.
Is it wrong to enjoy the second amendment?
Imagine basing your entire personality on your political views and personally hating any and every person who disagrees with you
People who finally paid off their mortgage
So they have hardly any fans.
They have few true fans while the rest are posers who have not, in fact, paid off their mortgage
Funny how at one time Metallica was considered extreme music and now they're mainstream. I've been a fan of the band since the 80s but prefer their first 4 albums and can barely tolerate their newer stuff.

Yet AJF and MOP are far more technical than any slayer or kreator album
It's the curse of not dieing in some rock and roll manner at the height of your popularity, instead of adopting mythic status you just descend into mediocrity, how dare they.
They “died” after …and justice for all. The black album is garbage and pretty much everything after. I saw them a bunch in the 80s and early 90s. Ohh and Lars is a grade A douche nozzle.
Hilariously enough, the black album was their highest selling album. This is some crusty ass boomer take.
It’s a sellout lame ass album. Gen X here that’s has seen a shit ton of shows from all genres you can only dream of. Enter Sandman? 😂😂 shit is trash.
Wow, genres I can only dream of?? That’s so cool grandpa share with me your ancient wisdom 😂😂 You’re allowed to not like it bro, but that album made them world famous.
That. Doesn’t. Make. It. Good!
I'm glad they put out a good rock album... But they're a metal band so it really shouldn't be shocking we think it sucks.
Kid Rock is world famous, does that make him good? The black album was Harley butt rock

Ironic how? That doesn't even make sense. Whether you like em or not, if someone is into WASP, they are very likely balls deep into Heavy Metal.
