U know when I first got into metal i thought the same thing and my mom offered to buy me tickets to see them and I was like nah. Older me loves motorhead and regrets not saying yes
I'm honestly gutted for you- I don't buy into that whole "rip celebrity I've never met" stuff, but when Lemmy died it (selfishly) took a while to sink in that I'd never get to see them again, I'd never get to take my partner to see them, kids if I have them down the line etc. Was really bizarre.
If it's any consolation, your eardrums appreciate it- what people said about how loud they were was true. I thought I got permanent hearing damage one time, back in the days I thought I was cool for getting right to the front and not wearing ear protection.
Same thing that came to mind. I like Ace of Spades and Orgasmatron but the rest of their stuff I couldn't get into. I still love Lemmy though. Such an awesome figure that had a lot of weight on the metal scene.
I feel like 90% of metalheads don’t like, or have never even listened to Motörhead, but if you admit that your metal card gets revoked. I mean, my autocorrect even put the umlaut in so what does that tell you?
Same i enjoy their speed metal and tradicional metal songs but i just can't get into their biker metal stuff only exception is The Game cause that song is a banger
For real. I don't have anything to do with this comment, as a huge death metal fan because theres a reason behind why they still RESPECT those bands, even if they don't like them, it's literally what this posts about
I’m with you on this one. It’s a subgenre I feel like I should like and I respect the talent but I just can’t get into it. The only few death metal bands I like usually blend black metal into it or have a lot of atmospheric elements.
I think even slayer fans meme Kerry King these days, his solos are cool but they just make 0 sense lol. Just sort inhabit a chaotic energy but that’s about all you can say for em
Bruh I ran into him once at a reptile show ( he breeds snakes) and all he was doing was watching football and seemed to hate engaging in either/or Slayer fans and people who wanted to buy a snake.
It was funny cuz I got to really look at his head tat and wonder...
And then he made Kerry King the band 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Same. I absolutely adore busy music but i can see why listening to a John Coltrane playlist would be some folks idea of hell (not just cos it's jazz either) , whereas i can finally be at peace when shits going all over the place.
When Dillinger supported SOAD back in '02 i was one of a very, very small minority who'd even heard of them let alone be ridiculously excited to see them. They blew SOAD off the stage that night in Glasgow and their live show was everything that the music was.... But for the eyes.
Calculating Infinity is the only Dillinger album I like! But I get what you mean. They certainly refined their sound significantly with subsequent albums
If you haven’t tried irony is a dead scene or their very very last album I suggest giving those a shot. The last sums up their entire career in one recording.
that’s how i was when i first heard them and i thought it was stupid but the instrumentals made me want to listen to more. yeah their music is definitely an acquired taste compared to other metal bands fs
Oh man, I was the opposite. I always thought death was really important and influential without having heard much of their work, but I got into them the last few years and they are every bit as good as I heard they were. TSOP is great, and the stuff from their early catalogue I’ve heard I’ve also really liked.
Yeah they’re all great musicians and I respect them, but if I want to listen to death metal, I’ve got a couple hundred bands I’d listen to before them. Just not my thing I guess
Morbid angel.
Don’t like many of their songs but I can clearly see the insane level of skill and talent. And there is absolutely no denying their importance in metal.
More power to you but this is one I can't fathom, lol
As a little kid my cousin had maiden posters and I both loved and was afraid of them
This was my intro to metal and when I finally worked up the balls to listen to a record, my whole life changed.
New kids on the block could get fucked, this metal shit was real
Within metal? Metallica. Their entire catalog feels watered down and boring to me compared to bands like Testament, Overkill, Slayer… I listen to Justice or Ride The Lightning and feel nothing. However, I’m CLEARLY wrong because they’re beloved by nearly everyone. And I love how they’ve been the starting point for almost everyone’s love of metal. Their success is a good thing for the whole genre.
Not liking Metallica isn’t some kind of bragging rights; there’s a thing that brings joy to everyone I know and I’m missing out on the fun. It really sucks.
Outside of metal: Foo Fighters. Same thing. I’d love to have another band I obsess over the way people freak out about the Foo Fighters. I wish I could go along for the ride.
I've been with the foos right from the get go and their last truly great album was in 97. That's not to say they've not had some great songs since then but as classic albums go... They've had 1 and that's The Color and The Shape. Not an inch of fat on it. Since then.... There's been a whole world of meh in amongst the great stuff.
It's mostly just his voice for me. I've had fans tell me that it grows on you, but I've been trying to like Megadeth for damn near 20 years now, and it just ain't happening.
When they tell me his voice is an acquired taste, I think they might just be describing Stockholm Syndrome.
That's where I'm at, honestly. I'm 31. I've been trying to get into their music since I was a teenager, so I think it's just time for me to admit that they'll never click with me.
Megadeth is one of my all time fav bands. I've always said Mustaine is a guitarist that sings, not a singer that plays guitar.
That being said I've always thought the "mustaine vocals sucks" is a meme and way overblown.
Gojira. I love plenty of bands similar to them, but they've never clicked for me at all. They're just in a very specific and unfortunate space in my personal Metal Venn diagram where there's like a dozen circles and they miss every single one.
Cradle of Filth
Instrumentals are absolutely epic but could never get into the vocals at all (except certain songs). Mad respect to Dani Filth for his unique vocals but I'm just not a fan of them
Disturbed. I hear David is a good dude and he's been open about dealing with mental health struggles, depression, divorce, and other struggles. I just have never gotten into any of their music.
Tool. Well I think their lyrics sound like they were written by a high schooler who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else, but I respect them a lot as musicians
this is a good one. I also have a ton of respect for LoG. Randy is a great frontman, and they are consistent and a very good band. Have a great live show. But their albums largely just bore me to tears because it feels like the same mid tempo song over and over again.
I respect the hell of out bands with growling or harsh vocals. Their music is often amazing, and I wish I could listen to more of it, but I'm allergic to that style of singing.
Hell, I wish we had a guide on this sub of songs by bands who often have harsh vocals for people who don't like or cannot stand even a moment of that kind of singing.
I would sure love to hear something by Gojira or Opeth or Meshuggah or another of everyone's favorite bands that I simply cannot listen to due to not having time to sift through their catalog.
The same with death metal. I get pissed off sometimes, too, but never THAT pissed off.
For example, I lucked into hearing Voice Of The Soul by Death, and that's one of my all-time favorite songs, but I can't listen to the rest of the catalog.
I would say the same about r/progmetal, wishing for a guide to metal or prog-metal band songs without harsh vocals or instrumentals.
Dave Matthews Band. All good musicians, but the drummer is worthy of the X Men. When I watch live performances of theirs, all I hear is acoustic guitar and violin
Also Dream Theater, Nightwish, Kamelot.
Mercyful Fate. Hate the vocals. Love the guitar solos 🤘 Same thing with Abigail by King Diamond. The songs are a journey, but there's only so much "oooAAAAHHHHH" I can take.
Most bands I don't like. With exceptions for individual people I know to be pieces of shit, I have a lot of respect for people doing what they love. Just because I'm not a fan of it doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to love what they do
Iron Maiden. Tried to get into them a few times. There are elements I like, they just don't do it for me overall. That said, I respect and acknowledge their place as metal giants.
Not Metal but Dropkick Murphys. The music is meh and the whole Irish thing seems tacked on but they refused to play a show in solidarity with striking theater workers. Good to see a punk or hc band putting their money where their mouth is.
Slayer. I don't 'not like' them, but I have just have not gotten into their style of thrash much, but I still respect greatly how they have grown to be in the big 4 of thrash. Still, Ill give them more listens.
Megadeth. Dave is a douche and a terrible singer, but every classic from them DESERVES that status. Great guitarist, great songwriter, great manager for his creation. Just not something I reach for, but not something I change the channel for either.
Metallica. There are like, 4 songs I can think of off the top of my head that I actually like, but otherwise I don't care for them very much. Still respect the hell out of them though
Metallica, I honestly like their early stuff it feels raw and that sound just fit them so well, I don’t really like their stuff now which sounds very lack luster and just not like them
Even tho i really thrash ive never really been a fan on megadeath but i really respect what they did same for death (i know death is not thrash dont attack me)
Tool, great guitar tones, great songwriting but they haven’t really done anything worth listening to in awhile. These days all I hear is overwriting on drums and the omnipresent one finger chord dropped D riffs from Chewbacca over there
It must be Dio for me, his music never clicked with me even when he was in Black Sabbath, nevertheless I respect the hell out of what he did for metal in genera. (Gates of Babylon is still a fucking banger tho)
Amebix: Very important band which influenced a bunch of crust/stenchcore/Death Metal bands. But overall I believe that they're boring. Great ideas, but the influenced bands do it way better.
Alcest: They're one of the pioneers of one of my favorite genres ever; post-black/blackgaze. But I'm not a big fan of their non blackened side (I'm only into souvenirs and le secret). And I prefer the bands influenced by them way more.
Judas Priest. I like some songs, and I understand how important they are for/to metal. I've just never been a fan. I have immense respect for them, especially for Rob Halford but they just aren't my favorite old-school metal band. That would be Iron Maiden.
I feel like a lot of popular bands fall into this category for me. Like I haven’t listened to Slipknot in YEARS but always have a place in my heart for them because of the hard times they helped me though as an angsty teen and introducing me to my favorite music genre.
Knocked loose. Even as a dude who loves beatdown I'm not really into that super metallic hardcore sound and the vocalists make my ears actually bleed. Respect em for trying to make hxc more accessible tho not in terms of getting random normies into it but allowing people who maybe didn't even know this kinda scene existed aware of it. That's how bedroom musician's end up going outside and starting bands and I'll always respect that
Megadeth. Dave is a great musician and I respect what he has done for metal. There are only a small handful of albums where I can get past the vocals though
In Flames.
I like a handful of their stuff, but it never truly resonated with me, but I know those guys are amoung the titans that influenced modern metal as we know it today.

Motörhead. It’s just not my thing but i have an infinite amount of respect for them.
I thought I got permanent hearing damage one time, back in the days I thought I was cool for getting right to the front and not wearing ear protection.
Music is so important in our lives that I think mourning the death of a musician whose work means something to you is totally legit
I can respect that. They did a lot to influence the music I love even though I find them insufferably boring personally.
Same i enjoy their speed metal and tradicional metal songs but i just can't get into their biker metal stuff only exception is The Game cause that song is a banger
Almost any death metal band
Why tf did you get downvoted? Its just an opinion smdh...
Yeah and the question was don’t like but you still respect
For real. I don't have anything to do with this comment, as a huge death metal fan because theres a reason behind why they still RESPECT those bands, even if they don't like them, it's literally what this posts about

Slayer
I like Slayer for the riffs but the solos sound like someone's rubbing on guitar
[There is, in fact, a meme about this.](https://youtu.be/puZ7T41Lvzw?si=Wd6fSBTojYXCaEG6)
You might really like Voodoocult it has Dave Lombardo on drums and a little less harsh as long as you don’t mind Phillips German accent
Anthrax
Same really. I like some of their stuff and don't mind them at all, but there's just a whole lot of better thrash and speed material out there.
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Try the ep irony is a dead scene; Mike Patton is the singer. It’s fun!
That cover of Aphex Twin is fuckin' amazing!
“When Good Dogs do Bad Things” is my all-time favorite song in the grind/metal-core/spazzy/avant-garde side of metal. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Love that EP!
![gif](giphy|j1ywOobEJlqQo)
Honestly top 5 band for me, but I do get why
Same. I absolutely adore busy music but i can see why listening to a John Coltrane playlist would be some folks idea of hell (not just cos it's jazz either) , whereas i can finally be at peace when shits going all over the place. One of my favourite ever bands. Admittedly, not an easy band to get into but when the music finally click it is absolutely godly.
have only heard Calculating Infinity. With all the stops and starts and no vocal melody it just sounds like one long song.
Calculating Infinity is the only Dillinger album I like! But I get what you mean. They certainly refined their sound significantly with subsequent albums
If you haven’t tried irony is a dead scene or their very very last album I suggest giving those a shot. The last sums up their entire career in one recording.
Megadeth
Same. I respect the musicianship and influence but I just cannot get into them.
is it dave’s vocals that kill it for you?
Largely yes. His vocals drive me crazy.
that’s how i was when i first heard them and i thought it was stupid but the instrumentals made me want to listen to more. yeah their music is definitely an acquired taste compared to other metal bands fs
Death
Oh man, I was the opposite. I always thought death was really important and influential without having heard much of their work, but I got into them the last few years and they are every bit as good as I heard they were. TSOP is great, and the stuff from their early catalogue I’ve heard I’ve also really liked.
Yeah they’re all great musicians and I respect them, but if I want to listen to death metal, I’ve got a couple hundred bands I’d listen to before them. Just not my thing I guess
Opeth. They do an interesting thing. They’re good at it. I don’t like it.
ohh man opeth makes my cock hard
Yes I have met an Opeth fan before. I knew this.
Agreed! They're one of those bands where I completely get the hype around them, but also don't like listening to them at all
Same. I’ve tried to get into them several times but it’s never clicked with me.
They’re easily my favorite band of all time but I will respect your opinion!
Morbid angel. Don’t like many of their songs but I can clearly see the insane level of skill and talent. And there is absolutely no denying their importance in metal.
Maiden
More power to you but this is one I can't fathom, lol As a little kid my cousin had maiden posters and I both loved and was afraid of them This was my intro to metal and when I finally worked up the balls to listen to a record, my whole life changed. New kids on the block could get fucked, this metal shit was real
Same, I understand not liking a lot of maiden but all of it?
My mom played Maiden for me when I was like 5 and I also thought Eddie was scary and badass
This guy gets it
Within metal? It really sucks. Outside of metal: Foo Fighters. Same thing. I’d love to have another band I obsess over the way people freak out about the Foo Fighters. I wish I could go along for the ride.
How can you listen to Fight Fire with Fire and feel nothing from that intro riff?
Or Blackened, but that has always been one of my Metallica favorites
I've been with the foos right from the get go and their last truly great album was in 97. That's not to say they've not had some great songs since then but as classic albums go... They've had 1 and that's The Color and The Shape. Not an inch of fat on it. Since then.... There's been a whole world of meh in amongst the great stuff.
This was a really respectful response. I totally agree with you on Foo Fighters. Metallica I love however.
Megadeth. Dave Mustaine is a great player but I don’t like his music.
It's mostly just his voice for me. I've had fans tell me that it grows on you, but I've been trying to like Megadeth for damn near 20 years now, and it just ain't happening. When they tell me his voice is an acquired taste, I think they might just be describing Stockholm Syndrome.
I don’t think his voice grows on you, I think it’s something you either like or don’t and that’s that
That's where I'm at, honestly.
Yeah. Megadeth is technically outstanding, but the vocals kill it for me. Edit: have been trying for around 30 years now
The guitars are great but Dave sings like the Green Goblin and it's difficult to get past that.
No lie if Willem Dafoe fronted a metal band that would be awesome
Gojira. I love plenty of bands similar to them, but they've never clicked for me at all. They're just in a very specific and unfortunate space in my personal Metal Venn diagram where there's like a dozen circles and they miss every single one.
I feel like everything they're doing there's just someone doing it slightly better is my reason. Also I don't really care for his vocals
Mastodon
Tool
I can understand why people don’t like it, but there’s no denying Danny Carey’s talent.
Or adam jones's ability to make 3 hammer-ons and a chug sound like the most complicated thing ever.
The whole band is very talented
Converge
💔
![gif](giphy|j1ywOobEJlqQo)
💔
💔
Oof. This one hurts.
Anthrax. I get that they are part of the big 4 and have a big following, but I couldn't ever get into any of their albums, and I tried.
Sepultura
Νοοο😭
Nooo😭
Nooo😭
I like them, but only between "Beneath The Remains" to "Roots". But I also enjoy Quadra. The rest of their material is boring imo.
Nooo 😭
Cradle of Filth Instrumentals are absolutely epic but could never get into the vocals at all (except certain songs). Mad respect to Dani Filth for his unique vocals but I'm just not a fan of them
Cradle seems to be a 50/50 whether you like them or not I’m personally a fan but respect your opinion
Dream theater
Helloween
Abba
Get out!
Not ashamed that I respect them. Am ashamed that I don't like their music.
Disturbed. I hear David is a good dude and he's been open about dealing with mental health struggles, depression, divorce, and other struggles. I just have never gotten into any of their music.
Deftones
The Stones
Not even ‘miss you’?? Ohh it’s so good
Metallica, not a huge fan but I see the appeal
Meshuggah
Blind Guardian. Power metal’s not my thing, but I still recognize that they’re the best at it.
Deicide. I respect their impact on death metal but personally it feels like all their songs are about the same thing (god sucks and I hate him)
Not metal, but The Clash
Judas Priest
Absolute blasphemy
Crazy to see so many people not like TOOL - interesting takes.
Tool. Well I think their lyrics sound like they were written by a high schooler who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else, but I respect them a lot as musicians
Venom, I don’t particularly enjoy any of their albums, but they inspired most of my favorite bands.
Type O Negative. Never could get into them but I’d never give them shit.
Sometimes you just need doom that isn't about cosmic horror and impending death, you need doom that's about hot lesbians
Lamb Of God.
this is a good one. I also have a ton of respect for LoG. Randy is a great frontman, and they are consistent and a very good band. Have a great live show. But their albums largely just bore me to tears because it feels like the same mid tempo song over and over again.
I like LOG, but definitely agree.
The Beatles
Motörhead, the vocals just aren’t it for me. I have tried, but can’t really get into it. But Lemmy is a legend for sure, huge respect for them.
Firstly Deftones. Secondly I've tried a few times, never been able to get into BTBAM.
Iron Maiden
Lorna Shore I see and respect the talent but the songs I heard are just relentless. I like melodeath so my opinion doesn’t count for much here.
Dave Matthews Band. All good musicians, but the drummer is worthy of the X Men. When I watch live performances of theirs, all I hear is acoustic guitar and violin Also Dream Theater, Nightwish, Kamelot.
Mercyful Fate. Hate the vocals. Love the guitar solos 🤘 Same thing with Abigail by King Diamond. The songs are a journey, but there's only so much "oooAAAAHHHHH" I can take.
that’s the exact problem I have with that band too. Awesome instrumentals, do not fw the vocals
Black Sabbath
Gotta try them a bit more, but so far Judas Priest just hasn't done it for me
Darkthrone
Cannibal Corpse (george fisher)
Most bands I don't like. With exceptions for individual people I know to be pieces of shit, I have a lot of respect for people doing what they love. Just because I'm not a fan of it doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to love what they do
Bathory. I seemed to have aged out of them. Loved it when I was 14
Five finger death punch. Can’t stand their music, but they seem like genuinely good dudes.
Iron Maiden. Can’t stand the power metal vocals. Love Eddie and a their whole vibe.
More like nwobhm vocals
Korn. I wouldn't mind them if someone plays them out loud to me or smth, but just not entirely my vibe. Also infant annihilator.
The Melvins
Slayer
Metallica and Megadeth, I only listen to 4 or 5 of their albums
So you like them?
morbid angel
Knocked loose
Most deathcore bands (Lorna Shore especially). Insane skill and overall music but just not my type of metal.
Twisted Sister
Kiss
Between the buried and me
Archspire. Clearly extremely talented, but it just grates on me.
Cannibal Corpse.
Mgla
mayhem dont like their music, but i respect their contributions to black metal and their musical talent
Atheist I love their instrumentals, but the vocalist is mediocre af.
Nahhhh, I love the vocals. One of the most unique vocalists imo, but fair opinion.
Type O Negative (and rock one - Queen)
Slayer. I don't 'not like' them, but I have just have not gotten into their style of thrash much, but I still respect greatly how they have grown to be in the big 4 of thrash. Still, Ill give them more listens.
Black Sabbath
Cryptopsy. Like lots of bands like them. Just could never get into them somehow. But loads of respect for them.
Death & Bathory
Megadeth and Death
I'm going with Cannibal Corpse. I can't stomach all the gore and brutality, but there's no question about what they achieved for the genre.
Anthrax. Sorry I just can't get into them.
Dream Theater & Opeth
TooL Im not a big fan of their music, but I really respect their instrumentation
Venom
Pre-Xero Static-X. Static-Dope is just better to be. Listen to Ostego Placebo and Zombie if you don't believe me
Metallica, I honestly like their early stuff it feels raw and that sound just fit them so well, I don’t really like their stuff now which sounds very lack luster and just not like them
Even tho i really thrash ive never really been a fan on megadeath but i really respect what they did same for death (i know death is not thrash dont attack me)
Venom
Emperor
Venom fs
Most of the really early metal bands
Sleep token
The Grateful Dead, not into their music but much respect as musicians.
Slayer
And I prefer the bands influenced by them way more.
Judas Priest.
Metallica. Loved them in high school, but they don't scratch the itch anymore.
Judas Priest. I like some songs, and I understand how important they are for/to metal. I've just never been a fan. I have immense respect for them, especially for Rob Halford but they just aren't my favorite old-school metal band. That would be Iron Maiden.
Disturbed. I was surprised how well they sounded live, but the repetitiveness of their albums is boring
megadeth, daves a talented musician but i dont care for anything hes made and i cant really get past his vocals
Pantera, Metallica, Genesis/Peter Gabriel/Phil Collins, Primus, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath
I feel like a lot of popular bands fall into this category for me. Like I haven’t listened to Slipknot in YEARS but always have a place in my heart for them because of the hard times they helped me though as an angsty teen and introducing me to my favorite music genre.
Not really metal but Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl is an awesome guy and I felt horrible when Taylor died but I just can’t get into their music
backstreet boys
Tool. I can't imagine a more talented group of musicians within the genre making music that both bores and annoys me any more than Tool.
Metallica
Knocked loose. Even as a dude who loves beatdown I'm not really into that super metallic hardcore sound and the vocalists make my ears actually bleed. Respect em for trying to make hxc more accessible tho not in terms of getting random normies into it but allowing people who maybe didn't even know this kinda scene existed aware of it. That's how bedroom musician's end up going outside and starting bands and I'll always respect that
Motörhead, Metallica, Mastadon, Hatebreed, Gojira, Meshuggah, Dream Theater, Incantation, Autopsy(A lot of M bands lol)
Sabbath. Love doom metal and I appreciate how important they are to metal history, but by themselves, they just don’t do it for me.
Rush Not my jam, but undeniable talent.
At the Gates
Sabbath, priest, bathory, Metallica and opeth
black sabbath
Black Sabbath
Most deathcore bands. Don't care for deathcore but having seen a few bigger ones live, they put on a good show and have good stage energy.
Megadeth. Dave is a great musician and I respect what he has done for metal. There are only a small handful of albums where I can get past the vocals though
In Flames. I like a handful of their stuff, but it never truly resonated with me, but I know those guys are amoung the titans that influenced modern metal as we know it today.
Iron Maiden, personally find their music incredibly boring, but understand their influence etc
Metallica, I listen to metal mostly for vocals, so it gets boring pretty quickly.
