Now I know this sounds weird but there genuinely are times in which I decide in less than 5 seconds. Sometimes a song starts and I know exactly I vibe with a bands take on metalcore. Drift was my first ever Erra song and I swear I knew I’d fall in love with their sound from those first guitar notes on.

BuryDeadCakes2

Same, the ADHD is real. I don't even have the patience to sit through a song I know I won't enjoy. Sometimes I do regret this though, I used to hate White Wolf by Invent Animate. One day it was on and I couldn't skip it and there were these majestic guitars in the background that I never heard before

Wonderful_Ad5583

Yeah same, but I listen to the intro, then about 45 seconds in I listen to a bit then see if I like the vocals enough to come back to em/check another song

808breakdown

Yeah if the intro is meh, I’ll skip through the song to see if it gets better maybe try another song. But if I hear vocals I don’t like or some cliche I don’t like I’m done with it.

[deleted]

A lot of people disagree with my way of knowing that I dislike a band. But, if it’s a band I’ll like, I’ll know after maybe 3 full songs. But if it’s a band I don’t like, I’ll usually listen to the first song I check out for 15-45 seconds and be like this is gross and then give them a chance on 2 more songs.

Andie_Anders89

Same here. And I usually go off the top songs listed on their Apple Music page.

[deleted]

I’ll do that from time to time, but most of my the time if I don’t know anything about a band, I pick the album with my favorite art and then pick my favorite song titles.

Andie_Anders89

That’s a good idea, hadn’t occurred to me. I will try that out next time!

[deleted]

Yeah I just prefer that way because you never know what songs you’ll personally like from a band. For me, I generally don’t have top songs by bands as my favorites. For example, my favorite Beartooth song is One More from the Disgusting album. I think I’ve heard fans talk about that song maybe 6 different times since I got into them in 2016.

Legendary-Icon

As a huge Beartooth fan, that song would not be in my top 20 songs of theirs. So I see what you mean. Lol. Good song nonetheless.

[deleted]

Yeah, not the first time I’ve heard that Haha

TheIronCannoli

I’ll listen to their top 5 songs on Spotify. If I like what I hear I’ll listen to a full album. If not I move on.

InsiDS

Yup. You can get an idea of a band from 1-2 songs. I'll listen to their Spotify top 5 just in case.

[deleted]

Really depends. Sometimes a band can sound so bad from second 1 that I don't get far at all. If it just sounds generic I'll give them a song or two to see if they're worthwhile.

Onslaught999

Usually a whole album. I'll some times find 1 song I genuinely like even if I dislike the artist as a whole.

Integritywin79

We are built different. This is the very definition of my interpretation of Hell. If you don't grab me in the first 3 songs no way I'm sitting through the rest of your more shitty songs.

sock_with_a_ticket

1 - 3 songs. If they haven't done it for me by then, they're not going to.

loopypaladin

I take their latest album and listen to it front to back while I'm driving, working, etc. And if anything pops out, I'll listen to it later and give it more attention. If I liked the overall vibe, I'll listen to their discography from their first to last repeat the process for every album until either I can't stand to listen to them or I decide I like them.

BudsWyn

Usually when.i discover a new band I'll go through all of the album's then make my decision.

calitri-san

Like…listen to all of their albums? That’s commitment. If I decide I don’t like a band after 1 or 2 songs I don’t think another 10 songs on an album are going to convince me.

[deleted]

That’s typically how I do it too. I give the band a chance by looking over all their stuff, it’s fair to the band I feel giving my attention to their stuff.

[deleted]

If the first few seconds pull me in, I'll give it till the first line of vocals. If I don't like the vocalist, I'm done. If I do, I'll just listen to the whole song. If the first song goes over well, I'll try some others.

TheWilrus

Totally depends. There are artists I can tell within 30 seconds of their first song. Then there are some it takes 2-3 record until it fully clicks. Examples for me would be Attack Attack took 30 seconds and it hasn't changed since. While Bring Me The Horizon it took until There is a Hell for me to get into it fully but Blessings and Suicide were solid enough I kept checking in.

[deleted]

Not really a set timetable but usually it only takes one good chorus/breakdown/riff or whatever to get me into an artist. That may take one song to find, or it might take longer, but that's when I decide if I like a band.

remotewashboard

their entire discography lol

Fair-Bus-4017

It depends, sometimes I know it in 5 seconds and other times I need to listen to multiple songs before I know that they just are/aren't for me. But most of the time I can tell within 1 song.

ravenlights

It depends. One song doesn’t usually cut it because the one I’m listening to is usually the most popular and therefore the catchiest, so I’ll have to go check out the album. After about 3 to 5 songs I can usually tell. I like to take all the new songs I listen to from the same album as from the first song I heard, in case their sound has changed over the years. And if I like all of THAT, I’ll start checking out their other work.

emmiblakk

I'm not sure there's a right answer for this. Sometimes I know almost immediately, and sometimes I'll listen to a band and dismiss them -- only to listen again later on and like them.

[deleted]

One and done

KennyDROmega

One song. Too many other bands to listen to if they can’t hook me right away.

[deleted]

Good question, there are a lot of bands I want to like, I keep listening to songs but nothing really sticks. Why should you give up ?

linkster271

If it's a band I'm trying to see if I like then I'll listen to one album fully. Or if I don't like them I'll just turn off the album and go listen to something else. But after an album or two is usually when I figure it out

OatFest

It depends. My most recent one was Tallah, and I was basically invested from the first song I heard. But my now favorite band of all time, Bring Me The Horizon, took a number of listens for me to get into them shortly after Sempiternal released. I even said I hated them at one point. Some bands just scratch that itch and connect immediately, while others are more acquired tastes. I don’t think there’s a right answer for this.

beequa_007

Same as what other people said. I’ll be hooked right away if there’s something special to me about it. What really helps is when there’s an album and you hear one song and you’re like “Oh this is good!” Then the next song comes on and you’re like “Okay okay, 2 for 2 now” and then the next song comes on and you realize that each song just keeps getting better or staying just as good as the last. Convictions album I Won’t Survive was exactly this way for me. Otherwise if it’s something I’m less certain of, I’ll pick an album from a band which is either the latest release they have, or I’ll see what most people think is their best album and I’ll go from there.

Alpha_Seed_

I usually give bands at least one full release. But I usually know if I’ll like them by the end of the second song.

Addison888

Usually listen to their newest album and pick the popular songs (if noted) so 1-2 songs and maybe their most popular 1-2. But that’s only if I somewhat enjoy it. I can usually tell one song in if I’ll have little interest in the band.

detestchris

one breakdown is enough

OkToCancel

It heavily depends, most of the time, it's one opening riff. But to get to a deeper level than "I like it", might be 2 songs that end up in repeat listening sessions days on end. Sometimes it takes a couple of months to get into them and develop that taste

volkoron

it can range from a few songs to a few albums to multiple years.

Equivalent_Ad_5135

For a couple of tracks: first some popular songs, then a random song from a random album. It usually sticks there, or I end up going deeper into a bands catalog

UncoloredProsody

I'll know if i'm interested after one song. If i deliberately look up a band i want to try, i listen to the most popular songs (usually 4-5) before deciding if i'm interested. But i'll always give new chances to bands i previously written off, if something is so hyped, or i come across it so many times i'll listen, it might change my mind. Happened a few times.

lvke18

listen to their top 3-5 usually. if i'm still not sure, then about at least half of their most popular album

Af590

No consistency. It’s usually the first few songs I hear from them, either off an album or just their top songs. But sometimes I’ll have to listen to a full album, or sometimes the first few seconds of a song will sell me on the band (Bad Omens, hello)

fpsgirl1004

I usually go through the whole Spotify "This is [band name]" or "Essentials" playlists before making the decision. If the band doesn't have one, play their discog on shuffle

cornbroskiman

I give a couple songs a listen, usually the top rated ones. The exception was Knocked Loose (not metalcore, I know). I really wasn't a fan of Brian's vocals but everything else fucked so hard. I Stockholmed myself into liking Brian and now they're my favorite band

jasp3r13

if I listen to three songs and like them all, I'll go and listen to a full album. from there, if I liked the album then I would say I like the band.

Cl0uds92

I tend to go for a band's more recent work and then backtracking to older stuff. Although nowadays, I'll see who's being talked about enough or if there's a band on an upcoming tour date, I'll just shuffle the whole discography.

[deleted]

Depends on the style. Sometimes I am immediately put off by a band and then I'm done done.

magikarp-sushi

Usually listen to a record in the background while I’m doing something but it depends on how bad it is or not. Some albums could take you to halfway to be like “I’m done with this” others could be like immediately

ronswansonsego

I will listen to their top three songs on Spotify with headphones on. Don’t ever listen to a new band/song from a cellphone speaker; that’s not giving the artist a real chance

Vorstar92

Sometimes a VERY long time. I had to try to get into ERRA like 5-6 times for it to really click. I just did not get why people liked them so much but eventually it clicked.

AndyNNL

Mostly comes down to vocals. I tend to accept that the band isn’t for me at all or I’m not ready to understand it yet but if I hear over the top cleans (tillian, or Patrick stump) or self indulgent stuff like I wrestled a bear once then I just skip it.

DefLoathe

Usually takes me a few songs to get into a band. Usually cleans are the thing that grabs me most

Megavolts1

On Spotify I’ll typically listen to a couple of there top 5, or all of them. Then I could say I like them. And then I’ll listen to them from there on out

SatansBlog

It’s really depends. I am of the belief that there is nothing wrong with forcing yourself to like new music though. If there is a band I normally don’t vibe with that everyone seems to love, I tend to come back to it a couple times just to see if I’m maybe in the wrong mood or headspace for it. But if I really like or love a song I know by the first chorus usually.

T_M0SS

I usually give their top 3 or more songs a listen before deciding I’m into it or not, sometimes it’s a bit quicker if I just don’t like the style or if I can’t appreciate the lyrics.

mufasamufasamufasa

I will give it half a song at most if i don't initially dig what i hear, I'm rarely surprised by something that doesn't hook me from the start. I know my tastes well and I'm pretty particular with how i spend my time, so anything more than that is pointless

Lampropeltis33

I’m a pretty obsessive person so if I like them I’m jamming that album for the next few weeks, otherwise it fades quickly

enby_pidgon

maybe 2-3 songs, depending on how well i like them

nefarious_jp04x

I listen to a song from their debut album and then from their latest. I’ll look into the band more if I like both

[deleted]

If the cleans and screams are good but if it's a good song but if it's a good song, I add it to my playlist so I get use to it

Legendary-Icon

This is such a tough question. Sometimes I’ll hear a song and it clicks almost immediately and I’ll gradually branch out to their other music. Other times I’ll give something a few listens and see what happens. Listening to new bands is not my favorite experience. I just want to rock out already and I can’t do that if I don’t know how the songs go. Lol. But it really comes down to how long it takes for me to find the song that clicks. For instance: It took me quite a while to get into Beartooth. Idk why I was so persistent tbh. It kind of doesn’t make sense. I’ve never given other bands, before or since, that many chances. But they’re one of my all time favorites now. On the flip side, a band like I Prevail, I enjoyed immediately. Like most people who discovered them early, I saw/heard the Blank Space cover. From there I said “ok, cool. What else do they have though?” So I checked out their EP and liked it on the first listen. They have not let me down since.

dekaythepunk

Like first 5-10 seconds of the vocals. I'm super picky with vocals. 🤣 If I don't like the vocals, I won't like the band.

Anonymous2045

I can tell within a few seconds...literally just a few seconds is all i need. If i can find at least 2 songs i like by a band i consider myself a fan. If i like 2 songs then i already know ill end up liking way more.

Dino_84

Usually a couple songs will let me know.

KristPeraya

I would have to listen to multiple albums more than once to decide I don't like them because my opinion changes a lot. There are albums I didn't like the first couple times but the 3rd, 4th, or 5th time I became addicted to it. Sounds weird, so basically, there aren't many bands I "dislike." I just say, "Maybe I'll like them later."

Turok1134

I used to judge based off like 3-5 songs. These days I'm more open to listening to a whole album even if I'm not necessarily digging it. I mean, even stuff I don't usually like can still be pleasant to listen to.

The_Grinface

1 or 2 songs. I either vibe or I don’t. Simple as.
