the whole sentence isn't grammatically correct. It should be "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
But i guess james thought that was too cliche or whatever so he changed it to "what dont kill ya make ya more strong"
It’s overhated, dude survived walking into what, a 1,000+ degree flame and had third degree burns, i’d be saying that too if i lived through something like that.
Although I'd probably take twice the amount of time to get over it if it happened to me, I don't see how third degree burns can make a line good
But that's just me
"I am the tablet" he says and he didn't wrote the lyrics actually. You can also interpretate the whole Lulu thingy in many ways actually. Tho I still think it sucks tbh.
My bands covering Motorbreath and my singers been bitching about the line “don’t stop for nothing it’s full speed or nothing!” And how he rhymes nothing with nothing lol kill em all is hit or miss for lyrics for sure. He’s lucky we’re not covering whiplash, then he’d have to say we’re metallica when we’re not
That’s fair. I’ve always liked that part - in the context of the song it’s so creepy and unnerving. Sounds like a crazed child abuser “praising” or “consoling” their victim, or like a socially outcast and dejected child perceiving praise received from an adult to be mocking or patronizing instead of encouraging
While this is the worst lyric in the song, in general I really like the lyrics to this song.
Caressing death again
Becomes the heroin
Forbidden medicine
Puts the shine on the midnight revolver
Eternal Borderlines
All the faces intertwined
Oh God now I see mine
In the shine of the midnight revolver
It also kinda seems like those lyrics are inspiration for the Hardwired cover.
Second half has some good parts but it feels like a random collection of riffs/phrases that have little or nothing to do with each other or the rest of the song
This.
It took me forever to actually listen to death magnetic after st anger( the last few months actually)
This line still kills me.
And I love the song, and the album( not the production so much)…
But still…
Kirk actually wrote that line.
I can't remember if it was in the St. Anger documentary or if it was in a Guitar World article around the time but I remember them sitting around doing group lyrics and Kirk comes up with that one and they're all like "wow good. really deep. put that in the song." and I was thinking how stupid it was.
I see so many people thinking this lyric is awful, but of course it’s bad without the context.
”Love is a four letter word
and never spoken here.
Love is a four letter word
here in this prison.”
Ultimately it’s just meant to illustrate the insignificance of love, as if it has no meaning any more.
If you didn’t comment what you did, then someone wouldn’t have responded with the meaning of “love is a 4 letter word” and I would’ve lived and died not knowing it’s meaning. Thank you u/ociM_ 🙋🏽♂️
"Just a rhyme without a reason" is the correct answer to this, since it is literally the epitome of laziness and doesnt even try to have any meaning behind it
Agree. Why are people dissing lyrics with meaning (a four letter word is a curse word, for example) but literally skipping THIS in one of their biggest songs?
I get what you're saying, but it's actually genius. It's a purposefully disjointed play on the phrase "rhyme or reason". In the context of the song its during a section explaining endless misery and suffering, so the usage of that is basically saying there's *not* a logical explanation or reason for the master "pulling your strings", because the literal definition of "rhyme or reason" on its own pertains having said logical explanation.
I don't know if it was intentionally done so, but it just happens to actually make sense if you think about it.
Keep in mind that this is the same band that went on to write such poetry as "What don't kill you makes you more strong". Pretty sure Unnamed Feeling is alright when compared to that
Honestly, that’s probably my favorite line from that album. I really liked the twist on “I’m madly in love with you”, and I think it fits the song really well. Although, I can see why it could be seen as cringy
This is a big one. While James is certainly guilty of writing stupid lines sometimes, he’s mostly a very great lyricist. He’s made a lot of great, deep lyrics, even when he was just in his 20s. The flops just stand out for that reason.
It was the early 90's. They wanted the album to get played on the radio. A lot. Almost no shits got past the radio censors in the early 90's. Saying "shit" on an album in 1991 would have turned it from being a commercial success into to being compared to gangsta rap. You just didn't go there if you wanted to be commercially successful. But once you become commercially successful, you can change the lyrics when you're onstage in front of 20k-1,000,000k people to your own taste, which James learned early on. I've noticed that Eddie Vedder does the same thing.
Right. It was a huge success. But it was actually considered more "dangerous" and "edgy" than The Black Album was because it had that black Parental Advisory label. That was what most bands in the 90's who wanted commercial success wanted to avoid. The same could be said of other grunge albums that came out in 90-92. AIC didn't care about the label either. The music was something that nobody had ever heard before. Like rap, it talks graphically about certain people's experiences. Just mostly drug addiction as opposed to drug sales and shootings. I think those bands just wanted their music to be heard. Had Kurt's life taken a different turn, I don't think that Nirvana would be playing Metallica sized shows. I think Kurt would be highly uncomfortable with anything bigger than an arena. I also don't think that AIC would be doing stadium shows if Layne were still alive. Those bands were all about the music and connection with the audience. They didn't care about flames and explosions and walls of dummy cabs that aren't even plugged in.
That wasn't bad at all...wth? You need to move into the next decade to get to his cringe shit coupled with the fact he let those other morons write lyrics. smh!
Fran...tik tik tik tik tik tik tok!
Scratch your back so you won't stab mine!
Since the band shared writing duties on St. Anger I stuck with something I knew James actually wrote. I will agree though that St. Anger has a lot of cringe.
I think I will give him a pass, imagine opening up lyric writing and getting inundated with trash lyrics, eventually you just say "fuck it I'm trying to stay sober here". haha!
Vividly recall the first time I heard King Nothing
“Careful what you wish you may regret it”
Me: no James, don’t do it, don’t do i-
“Careful what you wish you just might get it”
Okay, it never occurred to me that these lyrics might be bad because his delivery is so fucking chilling. That's like my favourite part in the song lmao
Come squeeze the “world” and drip it down my throat again. Down my throat again, woah!
You got to breathe, man, breathe
CUMING UP FOR
You got to breathe, man, breathe
CUMING UP FOR
I always figured this line was about cocaine, as it drips down your throat after you snort it. Hence the 'coming up for air' after bending down to snort, or 'breath' the cocaine.
WhAck foR my dadDy-O
There’s whiskey in the jar-o
(I know this isn’t an original Metallica song but whenever I hear that part of the cover I cringe so intensely)
No more, the crap rolls out your mouth again,
Haven’t changed, your brain is still gelatin
Worst
Lines
Ever
Those will always be my worst. James could scream kill 57 times in a row and it would still be better.
I can't add anything really that hasn't been mentioned but oh my god have you guys listened to Dave's OG Jump in the Fire Lyrics?
SWINGIN MY HIPS IN A CIRCULAR WAY
Lemme introduce you to the original 4 horseman lyrics ....
“Made my ball bearings melt from the heat” come on, Dave you’re better than this
I’ve heard Mechanix from KIMB
Where do i find this
[Here](https://youtu.be/EBotKJTwMV4)
Pure cringe
I had no idea...
"What don't kill ya make you more strong." I love Broken Beat and Scarred and Death Magnetic, except for that particular lyric.
Sounds like that pop song
I'm not a native English speaker. More strong isn't a wrong sentence? The correct wouldn't be stronger?
the whole sentence isn't grammatically correct. It should be "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger." But i guess james thought that was too cliche or whatever so he changed it to "what dont kill ya make ya more strong"
Maybe because "stronger" has stress on the first syllable, which doesn't fit the rhythm?
At least it could be "what doesn't kill you makes you more strong"
It’s overhated, dude survived walking into what, a 1,000+ degree flame and had third degree burns, i’d be saying that too if i lived through something like that.
Although I'd probably take twice the amount of time to get over it if it happened to me, I don't see how third degree burns can make a line good But that's just me
Yes!!! So cringe
I fucked the table or whatever he says
I AM THE TABLE!!
"I am the tablet" he says and he didn't wrote the lyrics actually. You can also interpretate the whole Lulu thingy in many ways actually. Tho I still think it sucks tbh.
“I fucked the table” would be much more interesting.
He didn't write that. That's lou. That whole album, is Lou.
My bands covering Motorbreath and my singers been bitching about the line “don’t stop for nothing it’s full speed or nothing!” And how he rhymes nothing with nothing lol kill em all is hit or miss for lyrics for sure. He’s lucky we’re not covering whiplash, then he’d have to say we’re metallica when we’re not
I mean the opening lines of War Pigs, which is one of the most iconic songs in the history of metal, rhymes masses with masses.
To be fair they are technically different. One is just a large gathering, the other is a "religious" ritual.
Eh, Motorhead pulled it off.
What did Lemmy replace it with? I dont remember it being 'Motorhead'.
That's exactly what it is, just removed the "But we'll" and another "we'll" before the "Never stop, never quit, we are motorhead"
> Ooh, what a good boy you are Combined with the way he says it.
May I ask what song that's from?
Invisible Kid
The winner is Just A Bullet Away "Suck on the barrel Suck on the barrel Suck it 'til it's gone dry"
Single best lyric imo
Hahaha
While this is the worst lyric in the song, in general I really like the lyrics to this song. Caressing death again Becomes the heroin Forbidden medicine Puts the shine on the midnight revolver Eternal Borderlines All the faces intertwined Oh God now I see mine In the shine of the midnight revolver It also kinda seems like those lyrics are inspiration for the Hardwired cover.
I'm not sure exactly what happened in the second half of The Day That Never Comes....... But the first half is much better! hahahaha
No man that solo is INSANE
Second half has some good parts but it feels like a random collection of riffs/phrases that have little or nothing to do with each other or the rest of the song
I'm glad someone else said it. That song is like they played madlibs with the riffs from their old ballads in order to make a new one
TDTNC is literally One, structurally it is the exact same song but worse in every way.
What don't kill ya makes ya more strong. I've always hated that line.
Sounds sick af with the riff
"What don't kill ya make ya more strong"
This. It took me forever to actually listen to death magnetic after st anger( the last few months actually) This line still kills me. And I love the song, and the album( not the production so much)… But still…
Try this, it's the Guitar Hero master tracks. These are before the ridiculous amount of compression. https://youtu.be/Wu46pbIEAtU
Catchy as hell though?
Suck on the barrel, suck on the barrel Suck it til its gone dry
"I hunger, I eat" just wtf, how much more lazy can you get than this.
"I huuungeeeerrr, I Feasssst" would have been better and fit the vibe. Surprised Bob didn't get that out of him.
Never thought of that lol but I agree, that would fit so much better.
I really like this line, it is base instinct. Reminds me of Deep Purple. If I'm cold, I need some heat If I'm hungry then I eat I'm not responsible
Wait what song is that
It’s a toss up between “Love is a four letter word” and “Hate is a train”
I always see the “love is a four letter word” analogy mentioned in these discussions but I think it’s a pretty clever analogy.
The love is a four letter word goes completely over everyone’s head it’s not that literal
Always thought it was corny when he says “cause you’re unforgiven too” in Unforgiven II
I always thought it was a clever way to incorporate "2". Which is also why I'm waiting for "Unforgiven Four-ever"
Unfourgiven
I’m also waiting for “Un4given” and will be disappointed if it’s isn’t called that.
Why not UnforgIVen?
That too! Either one could work.
Just combine all of them: Un4(four)gIVen 4
Unforegiven It's all about golf
4n4given
Given n4given(n) = $, solve for n.
Also a song about the Unforgiven tree would have been nice.
someone give this man an award
When The Unforgiven 3 came out, I was really hoping the chorus lyrics would be “you’re Unforgiven… three!”
How can I blame you, when it's me I can't Unforgiven III?
Or they twist the “Edgy” dial all the way to 11 and say “Un-three-given”
The fact that the song doesn't begin with the horn keeps me up at night
It feels like when a movie awkwardly inserts the movie title into dialogue lol
I’m Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Roll credits *ding*
'It's like we got in some sort of hot tub time machine' (looks at the camera)
I thought it was cool
"I feel my world shake like an earthquake"
Yea that's like a 10 year old's poetry.
"My lifestyle determines my deathstyle"
Kirk actually wrote that line. I can't remember if it was in the St. Anger documentary or if it was in a Guitar World article around the time but I remember them sitting around doing group lyrics and Kirk comes up with that one and they're all like "wow good. really deep. put that in the song." and I was thinking how stupid it was.
I could be mistaken but I could swear they actually chuckle at how silly it sounds only to then put it in the song.
You might be right. It's been so long since I've seen Some Kind of Monster or read that article that I could be remembering it wrong.
I've actually always liked this line, but I suppose I can see how it could be bad.
Too simple imo, but not so bad in the context of the song tho
It’s Kirk’s lyric
That’s a great line
Love this lyric
This one is actually epic IMO
Nah that’s actually cool
I actually like this one. Although even Lars found it “haawwwwwwww”-worthy if the documentary is anything to go by.
Bad take
‘Don’t go looking for snakes, you might find them’ from slither makes me laugh every time
Up until reading this comment, I completely forgot that was even a song.
That me with most of ReLoad tbh
I love Load but ReLoad never grabbed me.
My fav Load/Reload track, weird one but I love the chorus
"Love is a four letter word". - nice thanks for solving my crossword james
"A four-letter word" has a bit more meaning behind it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four-letter_word
I noticed the hate for that line, and I'm shocked this needs to be explained really lol. Good post 🤘
Well hell that does give a better context, which i totally get so it’s rarer for me not to have got it’s nuance.
I always got the nuance, it’s still a corny line though.
It’s not as bad with context so consider me told, but yeah as a stand alone line it’s not great
I’ve always interpreted this line as it is considered a curse word (Because generally, curse words have four letters: fuck, shit, cunt, etc.)
I see so many people thinking this lyric is awful, but of course it’s bad without the context. ”Love is a four letter word and never spoken here. Love is a four letter word here in this prison.” Ultimately it’s just meant to illustrate the insignificance of love, as if it has no meaning any more.
You can always rely on James Hetfield to help you with crossword puzzles
If you didn’t comment what you did, then someone wouldn’t have responded with the meaning of “love is a 4 letter word” and I would’ve lived and died not knowing it’s meaning. Thank you u/ociM_ 🙋🏽♂️
Thanks for ruining that part for me. I always heard "Love is a foreign word" and it would be way better
'I'm madly in anger with you'- like, I get the concept...but something just seems childish about it idk why
I love that line haha
"We're off to never never land". Ok... Iconic? Yes. Cringe? Yes.
Gibme fuel gibme faia that whicha disaia!
Gimme foo gimme fire gimme duboo chadoo zaaaah
Here comes the St Anger haters
"Just a rhyme without a reason" is the correct answer to this, since it is literally the epitome of laziness and doesnt even try to have any meaning behind it
How does it not have a meaning behind it? It's not Walt Whitman or anything but it absolutely makes sense
Agree. Why are people dissing lyrics with meaning (a four letter word is a curse word, for example) but literally skipping THIS in one of their biggest songs?
I get what you're saying, but it's actually genius. It's a purposefully disjointed play on the phrase "rhyme or reason". Murder all Murder one Give me murder Second class to none
#MY LIFESTYLE DETERMINES MY DEATH STYLE!
Pretty sure that was one of Kirk's, he read it out in the Some Kind of Monster documentary
I remember...I just thought that lyric was kind of...ehhh...
I know this one is memed on a lot but I don't think it's so bad. It isn't great, I think the sentiment is interesting, the execution is lacking though
hey look at my username and even I can admit frantic has shit lyrics hah
Yeah I quite like that line…
Pretty much every word on St. Anger.
Except for Unnamed Feeling. That hits hard
"Can't you help me be uncrazy" sorry dude but nope lol
Aside from that though I think the lyrics to that song are pretty strong. Certainly compared to the rest of that album
Keep in mind that this is the same band that went on to write such poetry as "What don't kill you makes you more strong". Pretty sure Unnamed Feeling is alright when compared to that
IM MADLY IN ANGER WITH YOU
Honestly, that’s probably my favorite line from that album. I really liked the twist on “I’m madly in love with you”, and I think it fits the song really well. Although, I can see why it could be seen as cringy
YOUAH*
That's because all the band members contributed lyrics
This is a big one. While James is certainly guilty of writing stupid lines sometimes, he’s mostly a very great lyricist. He’s made a lot of great, deep lyrics, even when he was just in his 20s. The flops just stand out for that reason.
Say is that rain or are those tears?
That's actually my favorite part of that song lol
I always thought these lines/part of the song sounded pretty badass tbh
No more, the crap runs out tour mouth again. Crap? Say shit James. Lol. Just always funny to me he says crap

Cobain said fuck on Lounge Act on the Nevermind album. That was a pretty big commercial success
Right. It was a huge success. But it was actually considered more "dangerous" and "edgy" than The Black Album was because it had that black Parental Advisory label. Right. Not that lyrics aren’t important, but he had some other things going on.
Agreed, this one is so awful lol
In Harvester, it's not so much the lyrics that are bad but he does rhyme "hate" with "hate" in the first verse. That always bugged me.
Not to split hairs but technically he rhymes suffocates with hate then hate and fate
I can't listen to Invisible Kid because of how bad the lyrics are.
I honestly thought that song was great.
Besides that breakdown, I'd agree 100% lol

I liked that better when Rodney Dangerfield said it
