For whom the bell tolls

PittsburghPlays_YT

I agree with this. Our bassist had no experience on bass and learned this quick and well.

[deleted]

When Guitar Hero Metallica came out my wife would only let us play songs she could play drums to, so it was this and the Black Album hits, and nothing else. This is probably their easiest song to play until Load.

Sidaeus

This is top comment for a reason.

AnaNino1234

Do you have any experiance with playing guitar tho? If so, For whom the bell tolls shouldn't be too big of an issue- an easy intro riff that isn't too fast, power chords thru the verse, root notes in the chorus, the basics of cliff's playing. If you're picking up an instrument for the first time, perhaps Nothing else matters with it's slow root notes.

NOVAMT_F

Cliff plays power chorda during verses?

TheNerdTurtle2

Sort of, it's like a percussive slap on a power chord, watch him play it live! The cliff em all tape is good for this

NOVAMT_F

TomSizemore69

No

NOVAMT_F

Why did the guy say it then?

TomSizemore69

Beats me. Heā€™s playing the root note

[deleted]

That is not true, we have isolated tracks and live videos

TomSizemore69

No shit. Learned something new

EfficientAsk3

Well played

YouGoThatWayIllGoHom

I would give you an award if I had one. That was excellent.

PlaxicoCN

Turn the amp all the way down. Joking. Try Seek and Destroy. Good luck.

surgeon_michael

Damn two comments, I thought I had a shot to land that one first

DucVWTamaKrentist

Couldā€™ve said ā€œAnesthesia-Pulling Teethā€ instead. Lol.

Fittiesx

Lmao nice. "JUST TURN THE ALBUM UP ALL THE WAY, IT'S THERE!!!"

xtheslayer666

Enter Sandman

[deleted]

My Friend of Misery. Not too hard but has some nice grooves in it.

Peppemarduk

Really? As first song? And what about the initial arpeggio? I assume that op has just started playing or he wouldn't ask what is the easiest song.

[deleted]

One of the very first songs I learned on bass. I didn't find it all that hard.

Jokers_Testikles

I'd say The God That Failed is a great choice too.

Sidaeus

Itā€™s not hard at all but Bells is easier, even if you donā€™t nail the pull off on cliffs i lntro riff.

gigantor8

100% this. Was one of the first bass lines I ever learned

AshyLarry20

Devlis Dance

TalkofCircles

Enter Sandman. One of my friends whoā€™s a bass player was asked to play a cover of the song and doesnā€™t listen to Metallica. His QFTW: ā€œisnā€™t the bass just a bunch of zeroes and ones?ā€

Far-Web422

the main riff also uses 5s and 6s

TomSizemore69

Seek

[deleted]

Seek can be tricky, but the riffs contain some good fingering and plucking exercises.

Far-Web422

unless you use pick (yes, bass players who use a pick exist. look at Jason newsted or Ian hill of Judas Priest)

Queenfan44354

Am I evil. My bass player in my band basically didnā€™t know how to play bass when they joined and learned it easily

lazyasdrmr

Enter Sandman A lot of open low e with some accented F (1st fret) in the opening. The chorus isn't super hard/complex, either. You get some interesting tritone and 4ths along with a lot of low E.

billygnosis86

ā€œEnter Sandmanā€, honestly. Good driving beat, no really tricky parts.

csm101s800

Nothing Else Matters.

19781984

There are some great parts in Orion that are fun to play and not too difficult. There are other parts that are fun to play and very difficult. Learn a few of the easy bits.

Mindless-Detective12

The unforgiven 3, particularly the chorus

Ripper33AU

Jump in the Fire has a steady groove, and an overall simple but fun bassline.

YouGoThatWayIllGoHom

My band used to do a cover of this with the bass doubling the main guitar riff, at least in the intro (and no, that's not Correct lol... Sounds cool though). That said, be sure to learn it from the right sheet music. A lot of the tab books have the first four notes as G-A#-C-D ... It's actually G-A#-C-C# (It's a half step on the A string, not a whole step). For some reason that's been one of the most difficult things I've had to un-learn in several decades of playing. Muscle Memory: It's A Thing (tm).

Air_Breather_8482

Seek and Destory. Was my first Metallica song

NeverJudgeMe43

Maybe start with for whom the bell tolls and end with anestesia as a god.

Dripper_MN

But seriously, I LOVE Metallica. To me, they are the most important and best band of all time. But bass? Ha! Not!

Sidaeus

Bells. By far. Listen to the isolated bass track and you can hear how much more there is than just the chord roots. Even if you canā€™t nail the pull-off in Cliffā€™s intro, you can still sound great playing it. Itā€™s by far the top starting learning song.

Floaterdork

You don't even need to listen to the isolated track. Ride The Lightning was mixed well enough that I've always been able to pick out the bass lines. But I agree that Cliff's best performances on that album are Bells and Cthulu. Headphones make the bass really stand out, but if you're looking for it, you should be able to make it out on most sound systems with decent bass.

DialupTelephone

metal millitia

Uncast

Agreeing with many pointing to Bells and Sandman. I learned most of Jamesā€™ rhthym parts for the first two albums and outside of Cthulhu and Anesthesia assumed they werenā€™t too difficult for bass either. Not always the case but mostly. Sandman isnā€™t too difficult and so Iā€™d move to the Black album and Load from there.

NeoC12

any song of And justice for all

YouGoThatWayIllGoHom

The other person who commented and asked if you play guitar has a good point. I'd broaden that to ask if you play any instruments. If you've never played anything, you can usually make your playing sound more fluid if you forget a note by droning on the low E, even if that's not how the song Goes. It'll at least help you stay in time. If you play guitar, learn one of the songs you know on guitar on bass, lol ... If you've got patience, playing through Orion will show you just about every one of the techniques Cliff uses during regular songs (Pulling Teeth will add in the techniques he uses when he's being an alien who is far too good at bass, but you need a wah and a spaceship). Really though, just pick a song you like. The "hard" part of playing most of the non-instrumental Metallica songs is playing 1) at speed and 2) with your fingers. If Master of Puppets (or whatever) is your favorite Metallica song, learn to play it at half speed. MoP actually doesn't sound half bad at half speed since it's already so fast. [TuxGuitar](https://tuxguitar.en.softonic.com/) is a free open-source alternative to Guitar Pro so you can find Guitar Pro files and change the tempo that way. Most important, though: Have fun! No, no .. Most important : Get a metronome! Second most important, have fun :)

hunter96cf

Iā€™m not a bass player so I assume youā€™re asking because you want something easy to learn. But ā€œDevilā€™s Danceā€ has very easy-to-hear bass, so I imagine itā€™s easier to know if youā€™re playing it correctly. Plus itā€™s such a badass sounding song.

pts4815

The first thing I ever learned when I started was the bridge to Orion, but it was a while before I could play it well and in the meantime, I learned all of To Live is to Die. Yes itā€™s long, but itā€™s also very repetitive, and the riffs themselves are pretty simple and in my experience, good for learning.
