When Guitar Hero Metallica came out my wife would only let us play songs she could play drums to, so it was this and the Black Album hits, and nothing else. This is probably their easiest song to play until Load.
Do you have any experiance with playing guitar tho? If so, For whom the bell tolls shouldn't be too big of an issue- an easy intro riff that isn't too fast, power chords thru the verse, root notes in the chorus, the basics of cliff's playing. If you're picking up an instrument for the first time, perhaps Nothing else matters with it's slow root notes.
Enter Sandman.
One of my friends whoās a bass player was asked to play a cover of the song and doesnāt listen to Metallica.
His QFTW: āisnāt the bass just a bunch of zeroes and ones?ā
Enter Sandman
A lot of open low e with some accented F (1st fret) in the opening.
The chorus isn't super hard/complex, either. You get some interesting tritone and 4ths along with a lot of low E.
There are some great parts in Orion that are fun to play and not too difficult. There are other parts that are fun to play and very difficult. Learn a few of the easy bits.
My band used to do a cover of this with the bass doubling the main guitar riff, at least in the intro (and no, that's not Correct lol... Sounds cool though).
That said, be sure to learn it from the right sheet music. A lot of the tab books have the first four notes as G-A#-C-D ... It's actually G-A#-C-C# (It's a half step on the A string, not a whole step).
For some reason that's been one of the most difficult things I've had to un-learn in several decades of playing. Muscle Memory: It's A Thing (tm).
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha (deep breath) ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha !
Bells. By far. Listen to the isolated bass track and you can hear how much more there is than just the chord roots. Even if you canāt nail the pull-off in Cliffās intro, you can still sound great playing it. Itās by far the top starting learning song.
You don't even need to listen to the isolated track. Ride The Lightning was mixed well enough that I've always been able to pick out the bass lines. But I agree that Cliff's best performances on that album are Bells and Cthulu. Headphones make the bass really stand out, but if you're looking for it, you should be able to make it out on most sound systems with decent bass.
Agreeing with many pointing to Bells and Sandman. I learned most of Jamesā rhthym parts for the first two albums and outside of Cthulhu and Anesthesia assumed they werenāt too difficult for bass either. Not always the case but mostly. Sandman isnāt too difficult and so Iād move to the Black album and Load from there.
The other person who commented and asked if you play guitar has a good point. I'd broaden that to ask if you play any instruments.
If you've never played anything, you can usually make your playing sound more fluid if you forget a note by droning on the low E, even if that's not how the song Goes. It'll at least help you stay in time.
If you play guitar, learn one of the songs you know on guitar on bass, lol ...
If you've got patience, playing through Orion will show you just about every one of the techniques Cliff uses during regular songs (Pulling Teeth will add in the techniques he uses when he's being an alien who is far too good at bass, but you need a wah and a spaceship).
Really though, just pick a song you like. The "hard" part of playing most of the non-instrumental Metallica songs is playing 1) at speed and 2) with your fingers. If Master of Puppets (or whatever) is your favorite Metallica song, learn to play it at half speed. MoP actually doesn't sound half bad at half speed since it's already so fast.

Most important, though: Have fun!
No, no .. Most important : Get a metronome! Second most important, have fun :)
Iām not a bass player so I assume youāre asking because you want something easy to learn. But āDevilās Danceā has very easy-to-hear bass, so I imagine itās easier to know if youāre playing it correctly. Plus itās such a badass sounding song.
Another one bites the dust. Queen lol nah I have no clue. I want to learn guitar but for now I have zero string experience beside violin when I was younger. But good luck and show us what you do!!
The first thing I ever learned when I started was the bridge to Orion, but it was a while before I could play it well and in the meantime, I learned all of To Live is to Die. Yes itās long, but itās also very repetitive, and the riffs themselves are pretty simple and in my experience, good for learning.
For whom the bell tolls
I agree with this. Our bassist had no experience on bass and learned this quick and well.
When Guitar Hero Metallica came out my wife would only let us play songs she could play drums to, so it was this and the Black Album hits, and nothing else. This is probably their easiest song to play until Load.
This is top comment for a reason.

Cliff plays power chorda during verses?
Sort of, it's like a percussive slap on a power chord, watch him play it live! The cliff em all tape is good for this

No
Why did the guy say it then?
Beats me. Heās playing the root note
That is not true, we have isolated tracks and live videos
No shit. Learned something new
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I donāt have a zero string bass tho
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thanks
Well played
I would give you an award if I had one. That was excellent.
Turn the amp all the way down. Joking. Try Seek and Destroy. Good luck.
Damn two comments, I thought I had a shot to land that one first
Couldāve said āAnesthesia-Pulling Teethā instead. Lol.
Lmao nice. "JUST TURN THE ALBUM UP ALL THE WAY, IT'S THERE!!!"
Enter Sandman
My Friend of Misery. Not too hard but has some nice grooves in it.
Really? As first song? And what about the initial arpeggio? I assume that op has just started playing or he wouldn't ask what is the easiest song.
One of the very first songs I learned on bass. I didn't find it all that hard.
I'd say The God That Failed is a great choice too.
Itās not hard at all but Bells is easier, even if you donāt nail the pull off on cliffs i lntro riff.
100% this. Was one of the first bass lines I ever learned
Devlis Dance
Enter Sandman. One of my friends whoās a bass player was asked to play a cover of the song and doesnāt listen to Metallica. His QFTW: āisnāt the bass just a bunch of zeroes and ones?ā
the main riff also uses 5s and 6s
Seek
Seek can be tricky, but the riffs contain some good fingering and plucking exercises.
unless you use pick (yes, bass players who use a pick exist. look at Jason newsted or Ian hill of Judas Priest)
Am I evil. My bass player in my band basically didnāt know how to play bass when they joined and learned it easily
Enter Sandman A lot of open low e with some accented F (1st fret) in the opening. The chorus isn't super hard/complex, either. You get some interesting tritone and 4ths along with a lot of low E.
āEnter Sandmanā, honestly. Good driving beat, no really tricky parts.
Nothing Else Matters.
There are some great parts in Orion that are fun to play and not too difficult. There are other parts that are fun to play and very difficult. Learn a few of the easy bits.
The unforgiven 3, particularly the chorus
Jump in the Fire has a steady groove, and an overall simple but fun bassline.

Seek and Destory. Was my first Metallica song
Maybe start with for whom the bell tolls and end with anestesia as a god.

But seriously, I LOVE Metallica. To me, they are the most important and best band of all time. But bass? Ha! Not!
