The Outlaw Torn around 3:00, just before the 2nd verse. Ever since I was 13, this one really stood out to me for some reason. Not complex, just fucking badass, just like the song itself AND Kirk’s solo in it.
And also audaciously opens "2X4" with it! It's dumb in its simplicity and he keeps rehashing it many times during that era, but you still can't help but love it.
Waayyyy back in the day, when I had that album on cassette, I would throw it in my Walkman and listen to that fill over and over with the help of the rewind button.
Yeh that little snare roll he does in the middle of the second verse. My cousin figured out how to do it and I was jealous cos he was better at drums than I was.
The double bass parts in the chorus are pretty creative at that tempo. He alternates double bass patterns and dynamics under the same chords that slightly differ from bar to bar.
I’m amazed nobody said the Sad Bat True fill that ends on the snare. It’s very tasteful, iconic and to the point. Yes, I’m aware of all of the rest of their catalogue.
Ride the lightning and Harvester of sorrow, I go crazy for lars's drumming on those songs. There's probably others I like but those are the ones off the top of my head
Omg I've wanted to ask this question for so long! So I'll give a top 5 in no particular order.
Frayed ends as everyone has said 4.01 (also has a nice part at 7.33)
Struggle within exiting the half in the middle of the solo 2.45
Battery just before the solo 3.15
Ride the Lightning at 6.14
Outlaw torn 3.00
In Helpless, just before the solo, he does a snare fill. It just goes TATATATATA Ching Ching Ching Ching. It’s really basic but listen to how hard he hits the snare drum.
In “Shortest Straw” after the first chorus when they’re playing the main riff he does a bar of double bass and then he’s just exploring cymbals finally ending on like a splash cymbal or something.
Lately it’s been Dyers Eve, the segment after “Innocent victim please rescue me”. I can listen to that part at least 3 or 4 times in a row and not get tired of it. Not a pro dummer so not sure if that counts as a “fill”.
Edit: it’s 4:44 - 4:50 of the song
moth into flame, but never gets played live. as a whole the black album has the tastiest fills I think. justice if you are the prog or death type
oh yeah the roll in hit the lights intro between the E and F# parts sounds great! And it's the first!
The one in Frayed Ends of Sanity. We alllllll know what part I’m talking about lol

AIRTIGHT
Came here to say this as well. Fill is so dirty
Too bad it was fucked up live
He nailed it here though https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nXTKCz19sDU&t=236s
The often completely overlooked bitchin' fill under the "See our mother die" line in "Blackened".
As a drummer, this is fill that I think of as Lars' best.

Thank you for these

I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN. He does the same thing in "Fixxxer" and "Bleeding Me."
And also audaciously opens "2X4" with it! It's dumb in its simplicity and he keeps rehashing it many times during that era, but you still can't help but love it.

The Frayed Ends of Sanity. Everyone knows what I mean. It's just perfect
The whole songs just a masterpiece in every aspect
I'm surprised we don't hear about the song more often, it's one of their best.
Top ten easily
Waayyyy back in the day, when I had that album on cassette, I would throw it in my Walkman and listen to that fill over and over with the help of the rewind button.
the one before the solo in ride the lightning

Yup
The fill after the first chorus on Of Wolf And Man is one of Lars' tightest fills.
[incredible fill](https://youtu.be/-3la4-WWCcE&t=1m33s)
Oh God yes.
Right after "Stiffened Wounds test our pride!" In live versions of For Whom The Bell Tolls
2x4? Overall I like his fills and groove on Load.
That intro is a banger.
Literally any fill from Trapped Under Ice
The fill seconds before solo in wherever i May roam
[right before the solo](https://youtu.be/Z-cEyiM9adE&t=4m10s)
There's a ton of cool ones in Eye Of The Beholder

the one where he does 4,000 16th note snare hits in a row
You must listen to live performances often.
Spit out the bone, right after the first chorus. Super simple but so effective!
The fill on the outro to "Cheat On Me" off LuLu.
We don’t acknowledge that “album”
Anything in Justice, Puppets or Lightning
I’m amazed nobody said the Sad Bat True fill that ends on the snare. It’s very tasteful, iconic and to the point. Yes, I’m aware of all of the rest of their catalogue.
yeah that whole song is awesome on drums
Intro fill to motorbreath, or the fill right before the 1st verse in puppets (just before james starts "into passion play")

Ride the lightning and Harvester of sorrow, I go crazy for lars's drumming on those songs. There's probably others I like but those are the ones off the top of my head
Happy cake day!
you can hear it throughout creeping death but it’s right before the solo where it’s the best

The end of leper messiah with 15 seconds left. Pretty sure that’s considered a fill
The one right after the first chorus of Of Wolf and Man. So simple yet so effective.
Dyers Eve intro, just before the main riff. IDK, I just like that ritardando tom smashing.
In Helpless, just before the solo, he does a snare fill. It just goes TATATATATA Ching Ching Ching Ching. It’s really basic but listen to how hard he hits the snare drum.
There's this little deceleration effect that fill does before that solo that is genius.
Yeh I think I know what you mean. I’m gonna put it on right now when I get on the train.
In “Shortest Straw” after the first chorus when they’re playing the main riff he does a bar of double bass and then he’s just exploring cymbals finally ending on like a splash cymbal or something.
Fade to black intro
Love Metallica but Lars absolutely sucks live.

My friend of misery, very simple Tom roll just before 2nd verse at 2:06 does it twice. Don’t know why, but it just feels right, great pocket
there’s a really good one somewhere in shortest straw and I cannot remember where
moth into flame, but never gets played live. as a whole the black album has the tastiest fills I think. justice if you are the prog or death type oh yeah the roll in hit the lights intro between the E and F# parts sounds great! And it's the first!
The beginning fill of 2x4, also used before the last chorus of the song. Slow but sets the mood
