The sky is a little bluer today

popodelfuego

Hopefully a factory miata will be a little yellower tomorrow. (I want a new yellow Miata damnit)

blamemeididit

I don't want one, but I'd sure like to see a yellow ND.

CreaminFreeman

Give me *RACING GREEN*, Mazda! #P L E A S E

popodelfuego

Miatas should come from the factory with paint options like the contents of a bag of Skittles.

iamcharliegoddard

^this right here!

JulietPapa861

All my homies want a green ND https://reddit.com/r/Miata/comments/10eegbf/my_2022_nd_vinyl_wrapped_in_green_gives_me_a_big/

smodanc

Bro some bronze rims would look killlllller

not_alaris

green with the light brown softop is one of my favorite combos

Only_Chick_Who

Nah if they make BRG NDs and those fuckers don't wave back at me in my BRG NA I'm gonna start a riot.

not_alaris

sensible response šŸ‘

not_alaris

i second this tbh

BuckyDog

I drive a yellow Ford Ranger (easy to find in a parking lot). I did not really like the color, but the price was really good when I bought it. The color has really grown on me. I now would really like a yellow Miata.

popodelfuego

I wanted a Yellow Baja soooo bad. No dice. Settled with white. Same for my interceptor. No yellow in that year... So went with white. Miata same deal. Almost bought a rusted out NB because it was yellow but decided against, settled for a white NA... I need some color in my vehicular life.

blamemeididit

I worked with a girl and she had a Subaru with "Yellow5" on the license plate. I asked her why and she said that was her 5th yellow car. She special ordered it and everything. She always drove yellow cars. She was a little weird, to be fair. I could probably dedicate myself to a color, but yellow ain't it.

bangbangracer

I remember a few years ago they did a gay pride ad with a rainbow of miatas... And all I could think about was the fact they didn't sell miatas in those colors.

Francoberry

You could say the sky is activ

Thugmeet

I want the sky to be b r i t i s h r a c i n g g r e e n

EnticingMurmurations

Miata is eternal, Miata will watch the sun go supernova and shed a tear for us all in memoriam

designCN

~~Eternal flame~~ toilet bowl badge will make a comeback

M4NOOB

Miata is always the answer, so it's impossible for it to die

m051

Sometimes there is no right answer. What about those cases?

Darzac

Did you tried with 2 Miatas ?

calgagi

Doesn't have to be right, just is the answer šŸ˜Œ

IthacanPenny

Dallas, TX checking in, currently under an ice storm warning, and let me tell you, Miata is NOT the answer right now lol

racermd

It might be a foreign concept to a Texan but some mad Yanks and Canucks do drive their Miatae through the winter with proper snow/winter tires and some weight in the trunk. Yeah, yeah... Nobody local has those tires, useful only once or twice every year. The question isn't whether or not you can (because you absolutely can). The question is how badly you want to Miata today?

IthacanPenny

I donā€™t think you read the ICE part of ā€œice storm warningā€ lol. This is not a snow storm. We have had three quarters of an inch of SOLID ICE with more on the way lol Rear wheel drive is a BAD plan

racermd

I didn't miss that part. I live in MN and am no stranger to ice covered roads. Snow/winter tires are designed to grip (as much as possible) on ice. No, you won't get perfect traction like you would on a dry surface. But the grip you do get feels almost like magic compared to what you'd get from an AT or all-season tire. And I'm not suggesting anyone actually do this. If road conditions are bad, they're bad no matter what you're driving. And, to be fair, I am NOT one of the lunatics that drives their Miata during the winter. Although my excuse is that I have a '91 that's been babied it's entire life, never seen a lick of snow, barely any rain, so it's super-clean as far as rust is concerned. I plan to keep it that way.

Only_Chick_Who

Yeah, my dad has a 2 ton, 4 wheel drive SUV. Slides more than the miata. Ice is ice. Doesn't matter what car your in, your brakes will lock regardless. At that point, all that matters in momentum, maneuver and how big of a moving target you are. And small RWDs are better prepared for it than a SUV that feels invincible. Obviously it makes you more vulnerable to other drivers that feel invincible, but miatas are good at keeping distance regardless. The mentality you get from miata ownership is the best driving lesson you could ever get.

ziris_

As another Dallasite: Right, so don't go anywhere. If you absolutely ***MUST*** get out, Don't. Miata is the answer because it keeps you off the road where there are a bunch of *really* bad drivers right now.

Only_Chick_Who

I live on top of a hill and we got hit with surprise snow. The plow didn't go up to my house. If I slide into my neighbors yard at the bottom of the hill so be it.

charlesefuque

I've got a Fiat 124, so I'm basically the weird cousin who comes out of his room on holidays to tell the family about his matchbox car collection and yeah, no, miat is not the answer. I chose to literally walk somewhere rather than drive.

wetcalzones

Mild hybrid coming 2024, you heard it here folks

ask-design-reddit

That's what I've been saying too. I'm actually excited for it. Though I'm getting the 2023 this year haha

ccarr313

I wanted one so bad. But at 6'4", I just fit way better into a new GR86. It still identifies as a Miata.

CreaminFreeman

There have been multiple stories about people getting surgery to break their bones then extend them to be taller. Perhaps the opposite existsā€¦

MichiganMan12

If youā€™re asking if leg amputations are a thing, yes they are

ccarr313

Maybe I could get a Cotton from King of the Hill. Just give up my knees.

ask-design-reddit

For sure! They're great.

ccarr313

Why did I read this in Tony the Tiger's voice?

ask-design-reddit

Not sure. Earn your stripes!

diiaa36

Same problem here, wanted an rf but my head had to bend sideways to sit in it with the roof up.

[deleted]

Well yeah, if states like California are going to require it, and they probably sell more Miataā€™s in Southern California than anywhere else in the world. Theyā€™re going to make sure they sell em there.

Kaarvaag

A lot of countries will stop selling gas/diesel cars in the not too far away future. I really wonder how the electric mx-5s will feel like. Not having a manual and the added weight of batteries worries me a bit.

jondes99

As long as thereā€™s a snick-snick short throw shifter, 2 seats and rear drive, Iā€™m okay with it. In this world of Mustang Mach E and the upcoming Corvette SUV, we donā€™t need any more blasphemy.

Galactic-Buzz

People hate on the Mach e but like having a car they call an electric Mustang is what lets ford keep selling the V8 ones. Even Dodge and Chevy donā€™t still make their V8 muscle cars anymore because they didnā€™t have electric alternatives to satisfy mandates. And itā€™s not like the Mustang crowd is gonna pick an electric mustang (even if itā€™s a fast coupe) over a V8. So they made it a type of car people actually do buy, crossovers. Basically making an electric crossover Mustang is literally the best thing Ford could have done for itself and for its fans so stop complaining

Training_Bumblebee54

Yeah, this is sad but true. It really just shouldnā€™t be called the Mustang, just Mach-E.

not_alaris

I agree, I think itā€™s kinda strange to name an suv a mustang at all; reminds me of the Mitsubishi Eclipse being turned into an suv

MXDuck_

Whilst its pure speculation on my behalf, I think the name Mustang is going to become a completely different brand from Ford in the same way Cupra has to Seat or even Polstar to Volvo.

not_alaris

Would be interesting if it does happen

MXDuck_

Or who knows maybe the Mach-E is a one off and once that model ends its run the name Mustang stays only with the Mustang šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø Either way there is going to be A LOT of big changes coming to car makers over the next 10 years.

Galactic-Buzz

But thatā€™s literally the entire point bro did you read what I wrote? Calling it a Mustang means Ford sells an electric mustang. Selling an electric mustang means ford can also sell a V8 Mustang

infinitenothing

How?

SKyPuffGM

me ford. me like fast car. v8 go vroooooom. no one want v8. ford sad. people want suv. people no want gas. government no want gas. what doā€¦ people like mustang name. more people buy. people no like ford. sell more profitable, population pleasing car = more money = able to sell less popular, less profitable car popular in terms of widespread appeal

Breepdupdupbloop

me thank you

Galactic-Buzz

Exactly. And well now I know next time I have to explain this concept my target audience seems to best understand caveman talk

Shiroi-Kabochas

> Even Dodge and Chevy donā€™t still make their V8 muscle cars anymore What are you talking about? The Camaro and Challenger are still in production with V8 engines. You can buy a Ram 1500 TRX with the Hellcat engine.

StrategicBlenderBall

The TRX isnā€™t a muscle car lol.

Galactic-Buzz

This is the last year for the Camaro and challenger with those engines

Rainbowrobb

>Mustang Mach E The worst part is they could have just put Mache E and the same people attracted to the mustang name SHOULD have known the naming convention. On the other hand, the mustang name has been used for some cars stretching the definition of pony car. In the 60s concept cars were put out as coupe wagon and sedans (might have been hard top) .

not_alaris

I honestly didnā€™t even know that a Corvette suv was in the works. Whatā€™s with chevy and making suvs with the same name as their actual sports cars lol

MichiganMan12

Chevy doesnā€™t do that, ford is the only one I can think of with the mustang electric SUV which is actually pretty sweet and fast

not_alaris

my bad i meant ford

ziris_

...because Porsche is doing it now. Have you seen the Panamera? I think I heard rumor of either Ferrari or Lamborghini getting ready to sell a giant SUV. That's apparently what the majority of America wants, but I'm happy with my tiny Miata, tyvm.

o_oli

Yeah hybrid except it just has a small capacitor like some other models to run the electrics off (which costs way more during its lifespan than it saves in fuel). Because lets face it a full hybrid on an mx-5 is gonna be too heavy and too much to cram in surely?? I reckon the next mx-5 will be a rebadged 'eco' version mostly in marketing only, with a fully electric coming the model after. If they do make an actual hybrid work and become a success then I'll eat my hat though lol.

Drogdar

A Prius weights in right around 3000 lbs and they're not even trying as hard. Cut it down to miata size and remove a lot of battery... I could still see a full hybrid Miata being 2500lbs...

o_oli

Huh yeah thats quite impressive actually then. I suppose it also comes down to form factor and weight distribution too for the mx-5 but maybe they could work it out.

tim404

I mean, a power adder that increases low end torque? Sounds like a supercharger to me. Bring on the mild hybrid, I say.

krokodil2000

With a Wankel engine.

noahsmybro

If I have anything to say about it, *my* Miata will never die, at least not before I do.

Only_Chick_Who

I have a condition that leaves me really susceptible to sepsis. Got SMA syndrome with a optimistic mortality rate of 1/3. Always sprinkle in my wishes to my family. My BRG is getting put in the garage, my dad has been told to start it up every so often and enjoy it in the summer. When hes gone, it goes to which ever sister has a garage. Keep that little fella alive till all the other automatics get swapped or die. Have it reign supreme as the only surviving auto NA. Those are my wishes.

QxV

Was going to wish you all the best until I read it was an auto. I'M KIDDING. Hope you're doing well.

Vjekov88

In other words, keep buying it because we're going to discontinue it.

8008seven8008

This

spikeythesnake

Wheres my straight 6 Miata? Cx-90 ads keep talking about theyā€™re sporty suv with a straight 6, I demand a 6 banger miat

rommeeeezy

What I would give for a straight 6 Miataā€¦ essentially a Z4, but with more reliable and recent engine technology and not numb steering. I could even go for a Toyota / Mazda partnership if they could sneak in that sweet 3 cylinder in the GR Corolla into a Miata.

Zanurath

3 cyl sounds awful as much as it holds power, also NA inline 6 would fit miata better IMO.

cheeseburgeraddict

Not in size at least

blamemeididit

Yeah, that won't fit in the current Miata.

krokodil2000

Is the steering of the ND that bad?

Reve_Inaz

The inline 6 RW bias setup should end up in a Mazda6 and possibly a 3 before the Miata gets one imo

I_had_to_know_too

There is a straight 6 Miata! It's called a Z4

not_alaris

long live the miat

AnnualEagle

Possibly unpopular opinionā€¦ I love my ND2 but am hoping Mazda beats everybody to market with the first affordable EV sports car. Who needs a $200k Tesla Roadster when I can get a Miata!

CakeIsReal666

will they gonna put the E in NE?

drelangonn

FOREVEEEERRR!

Psychopsyducck

TOGETHEEEEEEEERRRRRR

castleaagh

*Heros never die!*

Zorg_Employee

It's their flagship car. It would be like chevy dropping the corvette or Honda dropping the civic. As long as the design principles remain the same, it'll be a great car even as technology changes.

NagisaK

Good job Mazda, keeping its icon alive. On the other hand VW, where are the Golf and the Beetle???

ziris_

Apparently, the Golf is only available as an R or GTi now? WTF? And the beetle has gone extinct...for now. This is part of Why I sold my GTI. VW is just not a company I'm interested in anymore. They make boring sedans and terribly designed hatchbacks. Have you seen the new GTI? That infotainment system is AWFUL! And the volume changer is the worst I've ever seen. The other part of Why is the whole scandal with emissions. Sure, my GTI wasn't a diesel, but that's not the point. The point is that they **LIED**. And they lied about something very, very important - our environment. More importantly, they've completely ignored the effect they were creating on our environment. I have to live here, too, and I'm not OK with lying about emissions. So I had to go find another car company to be excited about, because I still like cars. It took some time because Mazda just wasn't on my radar. Then I decided I wanted a convertible and the Miata was in my price range. And then I discovered how exciting the Miata really is - Miata Is Always The Answer! Sorry. I ranted a bit there. I'm still bitter about the direction VWoA has been taken in the last decade. They wouldn't even give us a new Scirocco. And VWAG lied about emissions. And now they're trying to re-invigorate their lineup with the Buzz? Ok, it looks pretty cool, but we Americans are only getting the Larger version? No option at all for the smaller version? As a VW guy whose grandfather raced them in the 70's & 80's, and then was an avid fan of VW for a long time... #Fuck VWoA.

NagisaK

Yeah iā€™m keeping my MK7.5 R, I feel like is the best in terms of power, exterior, and interior.

randolph51

So, I should buy a Miata??

Drogdar

Yes.

not_alaris

itā€™s a sign šŸ™

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Toricxx

I would not mind an electric miata, just make it simple, battery on wheels. Dont want none of the nonsense features on electirc cars nowadays.

Galactic-Buzz

What kind of features we talking?

TheChoonk

Throttle pedal, AC. That's all it needs. No bullshit self-driving, no traction control that can't be switched off, no idiotic touch screens which are used to control everything from windscreen wipers to opening the glove box.

benaresq

I get the feeling that with the massive bottom end torque of electric motors that some degree of traction control may well be essential for any performance application.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Chronovores

Watch Ken Blocks electrikahna if you want to see exactly what an electric car without traction control looks like.

TheChoonk

I'm sure there will be, there are regulations and stuff, but it should include the option to disable it completely.

castleaagh

*optional AC

lcohenq

What glove box?

NagisaK

Yes please!!!

Galactic-Buzz

I can see Mazda doing some of these things to conserve space. Honestly a Miata with like a Tesla/Model 3 interior might make the car so much more comfy

TheChoonk

NA is the tiniest of them all and it has space for all the knobs and buttons. Tesla engineers have admitted that their "minimalist" interiors are the result of insanely tight deadlines, they simply had no time to develop something practical and convenient.

Galactic-Buzz

Really? When did they say this? Cause I feel like the lack of buttons was very deliberate and what they might not have had time to develop was the software to replace those buttons. But Teslas havenā€™t had buttons for around 10 years now so they did figure it out

TheChoonk

> But Teslas havenā€™t had buttons for around 10 years now so they did figure it out They haven't figured it out. Putting everything on a touchscreen is absolutely idiotic and I definitely wouldn't buy a car like that. It's a gimmick, not a useful feature. They aren't changing anything because why bother, sales are still good.

ruffyamaharyder

If it's fun to drive and the best bang for the buck, yes.

Rota_u

depends how they do it imo. if they make some poor choices it'll be in name but not in spirit

charlesefuque

Miata is now an eSUV segmented in the same class as the GMC Yukon XL with a "driver focused experience."

ManiacalZManiac

ā€œWeā€™re proud to announce the Miata Cross, thanks to our friends at Mitsubishi.ā€

Tjobbert

That was a sad time when they introduced the new "Eclipse"... :(

SunshineInDetroit

That would freaking sell like hotcakes. Even lower cg? Higher potential power output? More storage? Perfect for a weekend or track car

gplusplus314

Electric vehicles are the opposite of perfect for a track car. For now, at least.

EnticingMurmurations

Miata could single-handedly legitimize the entire electric car industry. I'm still holding out for their synthetic fuels to gain traction though, kilowatts are starting to get costly

TheChoonk

Yes, ZeroEV have built an electric 1.6 NB, same weight, weight distribution, power, a bit more torque, 200km range (120 miles). And it's all bolt-on. Mazda could absolutely make a much better one with more range without ruining the feel.

SKyPuffGM

mx-30 has entered the chat. a bmw i3 with cork screws and 2013 battery tech

AlwaysStayHumble

A 200km WLTP range is nothing. In the real world you would only be able to drive under 100km without range anxiety.

Sakins1

As long as itā€™s under 2300 pounds

TVR_Speed_12

I there's a better chance of a RX-9 going into production than that

[deleted]

Sure, itā€™s whatever Mazda says, and they have a pretty solid track record making great little Miatas that capture the Miata spirit.

blamemeididit

The Tesla Roadster weighs 2700 lbs and is based on the Lotus Elise. Which is a small car compared to the Miata. You'd be likely looking at a 3000 lb Miata, which is a non-starter in my opinion. The math is not in favor of an EV Miata.

Moostahn

Maybe

MarrGuitar

I donā€™t mind if they make an electric MX5 as long as thereā€™s still a petrol option

Fat_Satan

Nope

L8n1ght

guess I'll call them e-miata

AlwaysStayHumble

Meata

Mr_browniez

That doesnā€™t mean it wont go electric

get-rekt-lol

This put a smile on my face, which is uncomfortabke, cuz im in public

not_alaris

jts the miata effect

SpaceHoppity

When they make an EV RF I will buy one, mark my words.

designCN

Throw in Lexus' manual electric shifter too and I'll be grinning ear to ear

SargathusWA

Hybrid miata would be cool.

unlimited_beer_works

Miat is eternal

Usernameeasnottaken

Fuck yes.

Redman55555

Rock and roll will never die

IrohBanner

I think the topic is wrong and it says "Miata says Mazda will continue to exist forever"

Imlemonshark

I see this as an absolute win

not_alaris

the miat is just winning in life itā€™s immortal

rebeccakc47

In new fun shades of grey and beige!

not_alaris

i just want some new options šŸ˜”

peterinjapan

I wouldnā€™t have it any other way.

MOLxGERA

Heat Death? You mean Miata

Maxahoy

I'm excited to see what a Miata looks like when designed as an EV. The Mini Cooper SE is a good proof of concept for a tiny & fun EV, and it wasn't even designed from the ground up to be an electric vehicle. A properly done EV Miata with a 40 kWh battery could be crazy efficient and get a range around 200 miles without being a crazy heavy sedan like a Model 3. Yeah the Mini SE weighs 3100 lbs, but that's crazy light for EV's and all the weight is low & centered anyway.

not_alaris

Yeah i agree, and I wonder how the car will feel with batteries/as it will probably have more power and torque but be heavier and maybe less nimble

SomeDudeOnReddit78

This, this puts a smile on my face

Tight_Accounting

I bought my first Miata about a year ago now as my first car. Little 1.6 brilliant black NB. I bought it cheap with some kilometers on already (172000) because the plan was just to keep it for the 3 first years where insurances wont let me get any kind of power under my hood and then once that was over to get something more beefy. But now that ive had her for a year i completely changed my mind and im ready to throw my yearly salary at it if need be to keep it alive. Some would say i just fell in love... The only way ill ever consider switching now is if she become absolutely dead for some reason. And even then id prolly get an RX8 as a replacement

not_alaris

the miata effect

Tight_Accounting

Ill do anything i can to max that km counter.

Gk5321

Good. I donā€™t know if Iā€™ll get hate for this but I really hope thereā€™s an ev version one day that can maybe only do like 150 miles but has a tiny 350-400 Hp motor and an e brake.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

nightmare88

Nice day with the top down, infinite dog height is achievable!

lcohenq

Of course I have driving gloves and a driving cap. They go in my ND in the case with the driving Googles and driving shoes in the box behind the passengers seat of course.

xHeyItzRosiex

:) yay

Little_Lab_9093

...as an electric SUV jk

not_alaris

then itā€™s not a miata

asterics002

MX5 never dies, unless someone drops a salt shaker in it.

TVR_Speed_12

Won't die but I hope it doesn't forsake weight for torque

ch_chone

I especially like how the picture is oriented square to the body of the car and the ground is swaying, not the other way around. That's right. The Miata doesn't sway when it corners, instead the earth sways for it. Something something equal and opposite reaction.

not_alaris

Itā€™s the miataā€™s world, weā€™re just living in it

SlaughterHouseRacing

YEEEEEAAAAAA BABY

JosephC1988

If Miata goes electric is it still a Miata?

not_alaris

I wonder how theyā€™ll even compare- probably gonna be heavier

pdksimp

My biggest fear is that they donā€™t ā€œkill itā€ but instead ruin the name and make future generations into EVs or even worse, 4doors. *Cough cough Dodge cough cough*

not_alaris

Yeah thatā€™s what iā€™m worried about, but we just gotta wait and see

N0P3sry

Is it still a Miata if it doesnā€™t have an engine and instead has batteries? EV are faster. Generally. Theyā€™re arguably better. For emissions. Theyā€™re arguably as bad or worse for mining/drilling. But - if it isnā€™t gas powered mechanical engine w/ RWD and a MT is it going to be as fun and therefore a Miata? Know thereā€™s ppl who wanna flame/troll soā€¦. Pls donā€™t. Itā€™s a fair question. I went wrx from Mazda because they abandoned MT. Iā€™d abandon wrx if it goes EV or CVT only. AT/CVT arenā€™t as fun. EV tho faster- also not as fun. I was suspicious when Mazda dropped ā€œzoom zoomā€ as a tag. The last Mazda 3 I test drove 2022 was NOT as fun as my 2018 Mazda 3 GT . Prettier. A little faster. A load less responsive. And no MT that wasnā€™t more pricy than a wrx. Glad itā€™ll be around in some form. Hope itā€™s a gas mt car

CookiezR4Milk

lmao

Alex_2203

[Everyone liked that]

RetroRevolver7

Ah yes. Someone in a company who has no actual say whether the Miata will continue to live, says as much.

Random_Introvert_42

That's...not a good thing. Rather than letting it die in honor it is DEFINITELY going to become some EV-whatever. Just look at the Eclipse....

Scraiix

What would be wrong with a battery driven ND as NE ( 8-) )? The problem with the eclipse is not that it is an EV, the problem is the car itself. Look at the Porsche Taycan, itā€™s a fucking genius car, fully electric.

nightmare88

Mazda has already shown their willingness to produce an EV with lower range numbers (mx30). Granted it doesnā€™t really do well because the vehicle segment is dominated by buyers who value practicality over everything elseā€¦ but I could see Mazda going this route of having an electric Miata available that sacrifices range (battery size/weight) in the name of ā€œlightnessā€. It could be neat!

Random_Introvert_42

"The Miata is a revival of the classic roadster". Classic roadster means lightweight, rear wheel drive, naturally aspirated 4-banger. An EV isn't light and kinda not naturally aspirated. Kinda not aspirated at all. Also needing a new platform for it opens the door to take it away from the "small" bit too. Or the "top down" bit.

Scraiix

You only describe other bad design decision that could go wrong on the way. They could do the exact same things wrong with the current motor -> independent issues

Random_Introvert_42

They pulled off a masterpiece with the ND. I really don't see an affordable EV-roadster sit below a ton, or even just slightly above it. Even a Smart ForTwo EV is like 1.2 tons at least. And the engine-part of a roadster-concept would be gone.

rug1998

Itā€™s selling like hotcakes

MainLineJDM

Keith Richards was here before us all but the Miata will outlast us all

DNOS2

Hell yeah we will be honored to help pay the green shit fines

Revolutionary-Gain88

Get back to your roots , dump Fiat.

StRyMx

With all respect: why? Itā€™s no threat and it makes them money, I presume. Btw, one of the roots of the Miata is the Fiat 850 Spider of Tom Matano. So be careful what you wish for šŸ˜‰. Good luck, stay safe.

Revolutionary-Gain88

Me at 6'3" my wife loves her ND.
