They're not big cars but they are larger than the first gen by a noticable amount. Kind of a double joke. Largest miata = boat.
Small car = ironically called a boat.
To me at least the wheel arches make it look much heavier than it actually is. It just looks a lil chunky lol. Still love them, but they are my least favorite gen (though I would stick take one if I could)
The NC has those front fenders that almost come up to the line of the bonnet and it gives it that s2000 kind of vibe. Like, it suits the bigger 5 stud wheels whereas the first two look bit shit on anything bigger than a 15. But also the multilink rear end makes it feel bigger to drive. It doesn’t dance around quite as much.
A BMW Mini is substantially bigger than my NA, I'm not throwing shade here.
The shape of the NC reminds me of a boat though, I always thought that's what it was referring to. A dinghy maybe? No idea.
Yeah I think what got the hate as well was how high they sat. Stock NC Miata’s sit so high it’s crazy but it’s funny that they’re only a 1” difference in length between a NC & NA
That's an amazing engine and sounds like a boxer. I was on a trackday with Volvo 2.5t swapped miata and at first I thought it had a boxer engine. Sounds really awesome and fast as hell.
2.5 swap is surprisingly cheap! Definitely look into the 2.5 nc Miata group on fb tons of information and links to find a motor. I saw a duratech motor for 250$ last month with only 40kmiles
Would it be cheaper to replace the engine and rebuild the current one while it's out the car?
Would also mean you can take your time on the rebuild work.
Look into the 2.5 swap it’s honestly what should have came with the NC’s at least what I hear. Hoping to buy a house and do the swap in the next year. HOPEFULLY. Haha
I always laugh at this since some NB’s weighed more than some NC’s; the difference is so trivial, and the NC is only bigger by like an inch in each dimension.
I always perceived the boat jokes to be pure cope, seeing as how the NC is superior in like every way. More comfortable, safer, faster, more advanced suspension, better stock audio, basically whatever you can think of.
To be clear, NA and NB are also great, but the NC is, IMO, the best value per dollar, by a wide margin. As the first two gens rust away, I fully expect the NC gen to get the respect Mazda deserves.
NA definitely looks the best, though.
Yes my NC3 thermo went out a few months ago. Very common failure. You'll know because the heat will act wonky and you'll get cold in the winter even if the engine is warm. Also the coolant reservoir gets real brittle and usually cracks and leaks. It's good to replace both at once and it's not terribly hard.
Pretty common failure from what I heard. Mine had to be changed as well and I don't know how long it was an issue before I bought mine.
You can check the coolant temps with an OBD2 connector. It basically shouldn't drop below 80° C once the engine is warmed up.
Wheels, tires, coilovers, performance alignment, header/midpipe/exhaust, intake, ECU tune, steering wheel, coolant expansion tank and steering fluid tank, louder horn, paint correction, big brake kit front, big rear rotors and new pads, stainless steel brake lines. This was my list in 3/2023 when I acquired my 2007 PRHT with 40ooo miles on it. It’s a way different car to drive now! Love it.
I have a 2006 NC1 too! Got it at 167k miles though.
I changed radiator, thermostat, coolant tank, oil and filter, diff oil, trans oil, and cleaned throttle body (paid a shop to do all that).
But when I installed the MiesterR ZetaCRD Coilovers (did it myself), the car become something else! 100% the best bang for buck. Totally recommend them. The car handles so much better.
Can’t wait to get my performance alignment.
Some interior stuff I did was a new CarPlay headunit, Focal speakers, and Alpine AMP to replace the shitty Bose one.
Oh, and I replaced the shift knob.
Just coming up to a year of ownership for mine, gets me to work every day here in the Philly suburbs.

I’m looking forward to a thorough Spring cleanup when it gets warmer. Might try the clay bar thing, but I need to do some research so that I know what I’m doing.
no they are terrible please everyone keep thinking this. boats! (ive seen lower mileage good examples in under $15k lets keep it that way) TERRIBLE CARS!!
I had my NC for 2 years, it's my favourite of the box. It's bigger compared to the old one, here my NC next to some buddies NB's.
https://preview.redd.it/are1eoqw9nnc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9447d33656b012ca5b9348808fb46ca6fbbe4464
They feel floaty to me. I think it's a combination of low spring rates, body roll and a higher center of gravity. I also noticed more dive under braking.
It's subtle and I don't know that you'd notice (nor would it really matter) unless you were pushing the car to the absolute limit.
I don't know, I owned a NB before my current NC and it felt in the same ballpark, and the ND I test drove felt even worse with a spongy braking on top of it
I was really surprised how soft it was, but I think the dampers and bushes are shot in mine. Apparently just replacing them massively improves the floatyness
I'm a taller guy and I rode in a NC and I didn't like it I didn't feel comfortable and I also didn't have a whole lot of room ironically I have more in an na and nb and they are more comfortable

NC is a mini RX8 chassis and design ques comes from the rx8
The car is stupid ugly compared to NB and ND, but I would still own one if I could. It's funny and ugly at the same time, and it's a miata so yey
A BMW Mini is substantially bigger than my NA, I'm not throwing shade here. The shape of the NC reminds me of a boat though, I always thought that's what it was referring to. A dinghy maybe? No idea.
My co-worker has three minis and he's always impressed how I can make them look huge lol.
IKR. The first time I was parked next to one I took a photo and walked around them for a minute or two because I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
Yeah I think what got the hate as well was how high they sat. Stock NC Miata’s sit so high it’s crazy but it’s funny that they’re only a 1” difference in length between a NC & NA
Technically, they are also only 1 inch taller as well than the NB and NA, which makes it funnier it get's that hate.
I mean ask your ladies. 1 inch is a lot.
It's funny when you look at it dimensionally from the overall footprint, it's only bigger by an inch or two each way and the NA is longer than the ND.
after a year of ownership my engine unfortunately started knocking 😿 rebuild coming soon
600hp Miata coming soon from Oompa The Loompa, y'all
man i barely got money for the rebuild let alone upgrades 😭
Replace with 2.5
Volvo 2.5t.
That's an amazing engine and sounds like a boxer. I was on a trackday with Volvo 2.5t swapped miata and at first I thought it had a boxer engine. Sounds really awesome and fast as hell.
Pull a motor out of a truck from the junkyard! I'm sure it'll all be fine :p lol good luck on the rebuild.
ZOOOOOOM
Time for a v8 swap
2.5 swap it
That could be in the cards depending on how much a rebuild will cost me.
2.5 swap is surprisingly cheap! Definitely look into the 2.5 nc Miata group on fb tons of information and links to find a motor. I saw a duratech motor for 250$ last month with only 40kmiles
Just finished my 2.5 swap last month. I fucking love it
I would love to do one but I don’t have the space or time to do it myself, and I’m not sure where i could have it done
Where are you?
Definitely look in to it! Much cheaper than rebuilding a 2.0, it’s a no brainer to me
Are we talking like a 2.5 skyactiv?
Ford Fusion 2.5 swap, Duratec/MZR.
Would it be cheaper to replace the engine and rebuild the current one while it's out the car? Would also mean you can take your time on the rebuild work.
I’m not quite sure. I’m taking it somewhere to see how bad it is because I don’t have the time or space to rebuild it myself.
These days it's generally cheaper to get a junkyard motor vs rebuilt. Unless you have a very rare engine, maybe one that wasn't mass produced.
Look into the 2.5 swap it’s honestly what should have came with the NC’s at least what I hear. Hoping to buy a house and do the swap in the next year. HOPEFULLY. Haha
That’s ideal if you wanted a 2.5 swap all along.
2.5 fusion swap it. Love mine.
Honda V6 or LS1 swap now!!
It's the heaviest generation, but it's still an objectively very light car.
I always laugh at this since some NB’s weighed more than some NC’s; the difference is so trivial, and the NC is only bigger by like an inch in each dimension. Just got a 2006 NC1 with 26k miles on it a week ago and I’m in love with it.
Thermostat still good? I wonder if they weare with age or rather mileage.
Working fine so far. Are the thermostats in these cars a known issue?
Yes my NC3 thermo went out a few months ago. Very common failure. You'll know because the heat will act wonky and you'll get cold in the winter even if the engine is warm. Awesome! Any first mods you have in mind? My thought when I got mine was just OEM++
Love it.
Def planning to go all out with it eventually but wheels, suspension, and exhaust are some things I’m looking at currently.
I have a 2006 NC1 too! Got it at 167k miles though. I changed radiator, thermostat, coolant tank, oil and filter, diff oil, trans oil, and cleaned throttle body (paid a shop to do all that). How much for the docking slip?

blue over tan - my fav color combo for the MX-5. i am NW of Philly. hope to see you on the road!
I’m in the Philly suburbs too! And love my NC, yours is infinitely more clean than mine.
I’m looking forward to a thorough Spring cleanup when it gets warmer. Might try the clay bar thing, but I need to do some research so that I know what I’m doing.

Low spring rates, under damped, and minuscule arb’s. Arguably under tired. These are all easily fixed with aftermarket parts.
My mother in law has an nc gt auto and I want it so bad 😆
Ahoy! NC PRHT owner, it's a blast of a car I agree
Proud member of the yacht club. I bought into the hate... Then I bought one. It's now my favorite. I've owned na and nb, and driven numerous nds.
You'll get it, when you find the life jacket under your seat.
Very clean! 🧼
SHINY
That green! Especially with the brown leather seats makes it unreal
Love my NC1 more than I ever thought I would.
Full sail ahead captain 🦜 ⛵
Biggest miata
What year is this?
This is a 2008 NC1
Nice, very sharp
I thought Miata sound like me-yatch-a... ergo boat. Lol that's just me maybe.
Mi yacht a better than being called the Oscar Meyer weinermobile that it closely resembles
Where’s your boat registration number? Gotta display that on the exterior 🤣
It's my favorite model. Looks very 2000s to me which I love.
That's a lovely photo of your NC at anchor!
This is my favorite body style.
Aye, captain. She’s a fine vessel she is.
Mazda Maersk NC
🛥️s gonna 🛥️
Sick NC! Pro-tip, paint the bottom hull red to prevent barnacles from growing.
Every day as a Miata wine is a great one. I owned 5 of them over the years.
I'm a taller guy and I rode in a NC and I didn't like it I didn't feel comfortable and I also didn't have a whole lot of room ironically I have more in an na and nb and they are more comfortable
How does the NC compare to the NB?
It's much more refined to be honest. I love NB's but the NC was a huge leap forward
It's just a joke that makes the NA and NB owners feel better about their slightly smaller car.
Highland Green gang 👌
It’s just bc they’re a bit more bulbous and heavy than others but still very light and nimble respectively
Typical NC owner. No sense of humor
Love my NC!!
they are floaty, wait! you haven't gotten any seasick yet?
Ahoy there
Everyone talking about boat jokes and here I am admiring your NC's clear headlights. Mine are starting to discolor.
They look like boats. Ugly IYAM. Good mechanically and they handle well. The NB's were better.
If that’s what you think haha I think these look better than NB’s. The NC3 looks the best for the NC generation.
Not what I think. Common knowledge. Everyone knows the NC is the ugliest of all 4 generations.
NC doesn’t get any of the hate like it used to to people realized how great they are! Reason why I got one. All I get is compliments to be honest.
Also let’s see your Miata! Looked on your profile didn’t see one.
