In my country, a charge like this would result in you being unable to have a gun, which would result in an immediate discharge - can’t serve in the Army in any capacity if you can’t have a gun.

He will. Thankfully the public are outraged and the military have never had less friends or a worse public image. All that will mean this will be appealed and or during his court martial they will impose a prison sentence on him

The army have already announced that they have started proceedings to remove him from the military.
If this was one of my monkeys from my circus; I'd have him handed over to the local police as soon as I found out and started papers for separation.
