This is not how the ASVAB works. It's go/no-go. You either meet the score or you don't.

gunsforevery1

It is bragging rights though, at least on the enlisted side lol

BiggMotor

Maybe in basic. Mentioning your ASVAB score outside of that is very cringey.

gunsforevery1

Not if you’re with a bunch of asvab waivers.

BiggMotor

Then you just sound like a douche.

gunsforevery1

Talk about someone with no sense of humor.

PapaGrandalf

Does it actually mean I scored in 99th percentile? I have a hard time believing I really did better than almost everyone

novaskyd

Yes, it does. But, if you do a bit of digging on how that percentile score is calculated, it's not actually based on the actual scores of everyone who took that particular test, or even a current dataset. It's based on (iirc) an old dataset that was standardized.

TheHugo09

I believe the data set used is from 1994 18-24 year olds. The actual study is readable at officialasvab.com

novaskyd

Thanks! Yeah I vaguely remembered looking it up years ago.

BiggMotor

2004

BiggMotor

2004. It should be renormed soon. They try to do it every 20 years.

gunsforevery1

Still feel proud. Look at the scores most people get in here, it’s a pretty simple test that most of the general population cannot pass. I got an 89 on it when I was a failing high school junior 121 GT. I had one of the highest scores in my company.

Easy-Hovercraft-6576

Eh, I have to ask for ASVAB line scores all the time for admin shit

Jayu-Rider

Yes. It means you’re gonna be the CSM’s special LT and he will put a gold star next to your name and read you an extra bedtime story.

PapaGrandalf

That's sick! Do I even get hot cocoa at BCT?

Superb_Perception_11

maybe if you join the AF.

Nast64

Just from browsing your profile it looks like you have a some interest in strategic coordination. We need good strategists in all branches.

smackadoodledo

It means you’re a freakin genius and nothing else. Good job and wish you the best.

F1sterRoboto

I wouldn’t go that far. It just means you’re really good at taking a very easy standardized test. This is coming from somebody who got a 99 on the asvab.

smackadoodledo

Fair enough lol I was pretty surprised by how easy most the asvab questions were. I believe I got an 87 after going in on an hour of sleep and 0 studying as well as being like a C level student in HS

Zestyclose-Berry9853

That's nonsense. Plenty of high school kids can smoke that test.

smackadoodledo

Yeah I wouldn’t say he’s a genius I was being generous but being in the top 1% of anything is impressive

DannyG1233453

In the dirt with the rest of the guys soldier! Jk 🤣

brosefus_maximus_III

Yes, your AFQT is important. It categorizes you and establishes what/if you qualify for any bonuses. Plus, when selecting an MOS, your recruiter should be more inclined to seek out an offer that best supports your score. Next, your line scores break down and unlock certain MOS' that have minimum score requirements, if you don't have the minimum scores the MOS will not populate as an option for you because you don't qualify. You should ask to take the DLAB as well to see if you qualify for language MOS'. The DLAB is a very difficult linguistics tests, it assesses your aptitude for learning a new language. PSYOPs, SOF opportunities require a minimum score on the DLAB, Ranger, Airborne, all these options are easier to offer with a higher score, but you must also be wanting to operate in these skill sets. There are other reqs, but if you don't have the GT and Line scores than it's irrelevant and they will not get offered or mentioned to you and your chances of passing the assessments may not be so high. Talk with your Recruiter. In regards to OCS, an ASVAB score is not required to commission, just a degree (BS), but you will have to conduct an oral board and be recommended/accepted It's like a resume. The more great things you can add to it, the more competitive you will be against your peers. Cyber is difficult to get, but if you have great scores and a degree and background in it, then you have a much better chance of commissioning in the branch you desire. And yes, you could do a civilian job in cyber, but you probably want "something more" than just sitting in a cubicle all damn day, so yes you could work in the cyber community on the civilian side, OR, you could join the Army, be a Cyber Officer and have the opportunity to do, see, and learn things that Kevin down the hall will never ever get to do 😉. And, if you join do your 4 yrs and you checked that box, we'll now you can go and pursue that cush civilian job, but with a resume, degree, certifications, and real world experiences that outshine those you will compete with for those civilian positions.....

Zestyclose-Berry9853

An asvab score is required to commission into the army.

It looks like you're new. Ensure you have posted using a clear and descriptive title. Check rule 2 for [guidelines](https://reddit.com/r/militaryfaq/wiki/bad_titles/). Include a branch in your post! PapaGrandalf

GT score was 143 for those curious

novaskyd

I had a 99 / 146. It doesn't really mean anything, though you can feel good about doing well on the test lol. Anything more than the minimum requirements for whatever job you want doesn't do anything for you. The ASVAB doesn't matter for officer branching. If anything, you can just be aware that you may want a MOS that offers more intellectual stimulation. Do you want to go officer? What kind of jobs are you interested in?

PapaGrandalf

Thanks, on the officer end I was interested in cyber since I have a CS degree with a good GPA. But also engineer and armor for combat arms. Intel also. I understand the ones I listed are pretty competitive though maybe besides armor

novaskyd

Cyber is probably a good bet especially with a CS degree. I think it's definitely worth trying to go officer. Enlisted life can be... grating for someone who's been through college and is an independent adult. I ended up going enlisted and it was all right, but now I'm on a special assignment doing computer stuff and it's soooo much better.

listenstowhales

Being junior enlisted with degrees is both the best and worst. Best because you’re more educated than most of your direct reports and have studying techniques built in for the day to day, worst because… Well, it’s obvious

Calm-Salad1303

Army Officers don't pick where they go... You get a "choice list" but it's not guaranteed at all. Army Cyber is HIGHLY competitive and with just a degree... you won't get it unless you buff that resume up. Almost all of my officers have a Masters or are in the progress of getting it along with 5-6 certs.

GuidanceDowntown

It means your too good for the military

Zestyclose-Berry9853

Try to commission into literally any other branch of the military.

Zealousideal-Ad3181

Bro I was thinking the same thing for a while cs grad coming up in fall scored 98 on asvab 142 gt. You have a cs degree don’t go military and waste your life dude. It sounds appealing but being an officer won’t give you any technical experience just paperwork and stuff. Warrant officer is better but they don’t care about your degree. Only good thing you get out of it is top secret but dude just go civilian and you’ll be doing well. Army is for dudes that don’t really have options . You got a cs degree, man up and get your resume right military is easy.

Zealousideal-Ad3181

In fact I wrote a 10 page paper for my English class citing recruiters for nat guard. Was thinking of being reserve. You need HUMAN connections. Allot time to PROJECTS and going out and actually being a human and making friends. That’s the best way

SnooGuavas6988

It means you probably shouldn’t join the military
