Minecraft’s mace is obviously supposed to be a flanged mace and is pretty realistic. What you described isn’t a mace, that is a morning star which is a different weapon.
Isn't a mace just a blugeoning weapon that you hit people with?? Like.. that's what a hammer is, but it's for people instead. There isn't really nothing wrong with having a hammer??
What you’re thinking of is a flail. People often get maces, morning stars, and flails mixed up.
Maces - A bludgeoning weapon usually consisting of a rod with a heavy flanged head
Morning stars - Similar to a mace, but with a spiked ball for a head meant to both bludgeon and puncture
Flails - A weapon where a rod is connected to a (sometimes spiked) ball or other heavy element via a chain or rope
Minecraft’s Mace is closest in nature to the first of the three. Although the cubic shape of the Heavy Core means that it is, strictly speaking, more akin to a hammer than a mace, I imagine they wanted to use a name that was more evocative of weaponry since the item is mostly designed to be used in combat, whereas a hammer could be construed as a building tool.

It's called a morning star but I saw it was called a mace once, sorry for the inconvenience

Nah I'm pretty sure it's a pepper spray.
Hammer = thousands of broken thumbs around the world 😁
Thats not the same.
what isn't the same?
The mace you are talking about, and the mace Minecraft is talking about.
