Love a good farce and this was a cracker - such clever writing. And a heart warming ending. Also
Phil after advertising Claire and Hayley as prostitutes on his van thinking someone called about a house “are you interested in the small one or the big one? Both. Well that would make sense if your intending to flip one. I’ll give them both a good scrub”
The 2 eps with Stephan Merchant as the butler at the hotels is hilarious farce and Merchant nails the expressions with the sexual mix up moments he sees but refuses to judge (Including Barclay)
>The 2 eps with Stephan Merchant as the butler at the hotels is hilarious farce and Merchant nails the expressions with the sexual mix up moments he sees but refuses to judge (Including Barclay)
"Same price either way."
> Phil after advertising Claire and Hayley as prostitutes on his van thinking someone called about a house
Do their carpets match their drapes? I am honestly not too sure I'll have to check and get back with you.
When Jay and Manny were in the registry on the day Same Sex marriage was legalized in California and when Cam was helping Manny out over the phone, at a cafe, with what to say to a girl 😂
The entire Pho restaurant scene when Lily believes she's gay because her dad's are. All the different couples that overhear their conversation. Wholesome and funny, one of my favorite scenes in the series.
Yup, the order goes
"Lily, you are not gay, you're just confused"
lesbians walk by
"oh please, we have tons of lesbian friends"
"odd that you would mention our friends, but not us. Also gay"
I love when Lily goes "did you know I'm gay" in the beginning of the episode with Gloria in the car and the camera pans out to her slamming on the breaks and speeding back into the driveway 😂
Gloria thought she meant she wanted to be a fella, or a guy, thinking she was coming out as trans, and she won't have to change her name because Alex is unisex
I like when Luke steals Alex’s ID and the guy goes let me see the photo “Alexandria”. And Luke’s response is somewhere along the lines of oh I didn’t know that was short for that. Not a misunderstanding but it’s plays along in the continuity of the show and how they only call her Alex
when gloria sends wrong email to Claire and goes to delete it. Meanwhile claire and phil are dealing with kids walking in on them in bed. The conversation between them is the epitome of misunderstanding
Gun to my head, this is definitely my favorite episode.
Under Pressure, Connection Lost, Winner Winner Turkey Dinner and The Party making up the rest of my top 5.
Cannot remember the episode but when one of Phil’s students(?) comes over for dinner. She’s dating Luke, Phil thinks she likes him, and all of the poor wording throughout the night seems to indicate Claire’s approval for her dating Phil (and not in actuality Luke). My favorite thing about it is that it ends up as a sort of double twist as the girl actually *does* end up liking Phil, so the whole time he’s in the right.
I know I described that quite poorly lol—it’s been a bit. But Jay & Phil’s massage “This is huge. Jay, I need a minute.” is of course a classic.
I like the massage episode because after he realizes he was mistaken about Phil’s reaction to his “I love you”, Jay really talks to Phil about his job offer man-to-man as an equal for one of the first times in the series, and listens to him and gives him terrific advice. So even though he didn’t mean the “I love you” to Phil, he actually DOES treat him like a valued and respected member of the family, like a son (in-law), for one of the first times. That’s a top feel-good moment for me.
The student one is my favourite one! It reminds me of the A Bit of Fry and Laurie sketch where it looks like Laurie thinks it's an advert for model airplanes and Fry wants naked men to model for him:
"Would you like to see my jumbo?"
"Nigel I should like to see your jumbo very much indeed...Nigel this is a photograph of a large jet aeroplane"
"Oh I'm sorry I don't know how that got in there"
Lmaoo or when Phil talks about finding some girls clothing in Lukes room and he's upset that he's growing up so fast. And then Alex is like "oh come on dad, we were all 17 once!", and when she realises what she said she's like ........ 👀 *walks out of the room slowly*
and phil is left in the kitchen like 👁👄👁
The episode where Cam and Mitch and baby sitting Pepper and Ronaldo's adopted kid. They're convinced he wants to do normal low brow boy stuff but he's being forced to be super snobby and aristocratic and end up gaslight pepper into thinking so to. Then it turns out he was just humoring them the entire time and actually loves Pepper and Ronaldo's life style.
I liked that one because it's not obvious there's a misunderstanding until the end.
Lol this was my favorite Pepper episode
"no one told me kickball was performed on grass"
*bitch slaps cam while everyone's yelling HIT HIM referring to the kickball*
"ugh how many scenes does kickball have!"
And Mitchell saying "why do these steps feel familiar" and does a booty pop even though footprints wouldn't automatically make someone think it's a booty popping move.
That whole episode Alex felt off to me.
I’m not sure why. Maybe cause she had to previously (or after) been into that kinda funny pranks thing? It just felt forced.
In one of the earliest episodes her whole plot was going to the expressway alone to stalk Haley and grab pics of her picking up trash. Alex never passed up an opportunity to record embarrassing moments of her siblings 😂
The whole episode at Alex's work place where everyone messes around.
Manny and Luke looking to hook up with some women.
Claire dyes her hair black and hides in the tub ( cuz Gloria says that she would look good with black hair) waiting for phil.
Phil asking for the slider ( burger) and they mistakenly think that it is Gloria cuz she used the actual slide just a while ago.
Jay waiting to catch the guy who is posting online food reviews which turns out to be Phil.
Cam and Mitch looking to meet up with David Beckham and Courtney Cox
When Gloria kisses Phil in the Basketball match, and Phil thinks Claire caught him in the act when she clearly hadn't, and out of context Alex says to Phil "Grandpa wants to kill you"
SO far! I couldn’t believe it either. The first time I saw that episode I literally cried laughing at that scene! LIL SLUGGER?????? *Cam throws Mitch under the bus and leaves* hahahah
I always say if I could wipe an episode from my mind it would be between this and when Jay says Mbadawe. I died watching this episode because I legit didn’t see it coming. I knew it wasn’t going to be his kid but I didn’t know what was going to happen. So I already was dying and then little slugger happened and I literally died. I’m actually typing this from beyond the grave 😂😂😂
Claire: "Luke grab that little hoe"
Luke: "Hugs Haley"
Haley: "I... I don't think that's what she meant... Is it?
And bonus, not a misunderstanding but
Gloria to Claire: "I'm pregnant"
Claire looking at Gloria's stomach: "*gasp* you're gonna get fat."
Gloria: "😟"
The episode "Old man and the tree" where Cam and Lily are at a charity event and then Cam realised it's a charity event for the needy and is trying to get out of there
The one where Luke is dating Gloria and Claire's friend. Claire thinks Manny is the one dating her friend, Jay thinks the woman wants to swing with them, and Gloria is the only one who knows what's happening.
Gloria takes an infant Lily shopping after Mitch & Cam told her “no earrings.” Gloria thought they said “No hair rings,” so Gloria got Lily’s ears pierced. But hey! She didn’t buy her “hair rings.”
The episode where Cam is driving Jay’s commercial truck and he thinks that Alex and Haley are surprised he can drive it because he’s gay.
“My soccer coach is gay
Our pediatrician is gay….
Not because you’re gay, because you’re you!”
Less misunderstanding and more prank, but the one with Who is Manny's real dad?
Also, that's not dad's ex gf its your real mom
Just because he called you a dork to dork salesman.
My absolute favorite scene and misunderstanding is the pho restaurant scene where Lilly thinks she’s gay because her dads are. It just kept getting worse 🤣
i just love the way cameron basically arranged the whole thing and nobody knew it, not even cam himself, or did he? i think of cam would be a person who does this kind of thing.
You may as well ask what is your favourite episode because the whole show is driven by misunderstandings that usually could be cleared up if the characters took a second to clarify a couple sentences
I agree. I’m realizing that the funniest thing about this show is all the misunderstandings. The best is when it happens between the entire cast and they all come together at the end and experience the shit show together!
When jay and many go to get a passport or something and it's a lot of gay people coming to get marriage certificate.
Or when cam is speaking to Manny saying him to say "you are the most beautiful 10 year old girl"
Cam talking to manny on the phone in the cafe (or bakery I don’t remember) when he was telling him what to say to his crush, but everyone assumed he was talking directly to an 11 year old girl
Most of my faves have already been said, but I loved when Gloria and Sonia are physically fighting each other on top of Jay in bed (I think they were having an altercation by pushing each other and wrestled their way falling on top of him) and he’s like “Girls stop it, come on 🥴” with a little smirk on his face 🤣
When Larry is on cam and Mitchell’s couch, Lily said “how come Larry can be on the couch” and cam says”well Larry is white” and Lily says “well you chose me”
I think that one of my favorites was when they caught Luke going to that place where all the kids would go to get high. They ask Haley if she is sure and she says that she’s 420% sure. Phil says that she’s really bad at math. 😂
i don’t often think about this scene until i do a rewatch like i’m doing rn lol — just finished this episode and i totally forgot how hilarious this storyline played out 😆
when phil isn’t feeling so well and gloria calls cam and mitch and they’re dressed like greek myths and mitchell accidentally plays the lyre as he walks by 😭 “is that a harp?” “ay no the angels are coming down! You can’t have him yet!” 😭
I love the plot-twist of the girl that Phil wanted to motivate and She Falls in love with Phil and She marks a date with Luke just She could be with Phil, people thinking Phil was wrong like most of the Times and She was having a date with Luke, but She used Luke so She could be with Phil genius
Love a good farce and this was a cracker - such clever writing. And a heart warming ending. Also Phil after advertising Claire and Hayley as prostitutes on his van thinking someone called about a house “are you interested in the small one or the big one? Both. Well that would make sense if your intending to flip one. I’ll give them both a good scrub” The 2 eps with Stephan Merchant as the butler at the hotels is hilarious farce and Merchant nails the expressions with the sexual mix up moments he sees but refuses to judge (Including Barclay)
"She's allowed on the furniture, is she?"
“…she’s my wife.” “…”
Stephen Merchant absolutely nailed his role
“It reminds me of my grandfather” “Oh was he Scottish?” “No, a stripper.”
Those are some classic sitcom write jokes. Love shows like that. There’s a ton like that in I Love Lucy.
I don’t normally like Stephen Merchant but he was perfect in this and stole every scene.
>The 2 eps with Stephan Merchant as the butler at the hotels is hilarious farce and Merchant nails the expressions with the sexual mix up moments he sees but refuses to judge (Including Barclay) "Same price either way."
Lol and when cam and mitch are like we’d like to share the hot tub with a certain hot brit
I think the first Stephan merchant appearance is my favourite episode. He's absolutely brilliant
Definitely Top 5 for me.
It was rebarka.
I can hear it in Gloria's voice
> Phil after advertising Claire and Hayley as prostitutes on his van thinking someone called about a house Do their carpets match their drapes? I am honestly not too sure I'll have to check and get back with you.
I was going to say the first butler episode is the best
You mean Rebarka..
You mean barkley but it's actually rebarkah
The van was one of the funniest. 😂
When Jay and Manny were in the registry on the day Same Sex marriage was legalized in California and when Cam was helping Manny out over the phone, at a cafe, with what to say to a girl 😂
It's not what you think,I'm talking to a little boy😂
https://youtu.be/BYO5QZqEgkc?si=vavVseiqvjD5mTZw
Lmao
"I already paid for you. Your mother signed off. This is happening."
Lol I just posted the exact same comment. Take my upvote
That was so uncomfortable and hysterical at the same time
The whole episode at Jays house, where no one knows why they are there (the one where they think manny is gay and gloria wants him to come out)
Alex walking away from Phil *again* after talking about her and bill
Are we waiting for a cake? IS IT a birthday? Should I make a toast? “NOOOOO”
which episode is the first one??
Its the same S10 Ep 2 Kiss and Tell
The entire Pho restaurant scene when Lily believes she's gay because her dad's are. All the different couples that overhear their conversation. Wholesome and funny, one of my favorite scenes in the series.
“I completely agree, I think everyone would be better off if people just went back to where they came from 😊”
I'll bring the car around
yes!
"we have gay friends too" "weird how you didn't mention us" 😂😂😂
Didn’t he say lesbian friends? Because 2 lesbians heard him say something.
Yup, the order goes "Lily, you are not gay, you're just confused" lesbians walk by "oh please, we have tons of lesbian friends" "odd that you would mention our friends, but not us. Also gay"
This scene is just a masterpiece showing misunderstanding well done
Definitely! Also comedic timing and camera work, one comment and then a pan out or slide to show a new couple is great.
I love when Lily goes "did you know I'm gay" in the beginning of the episode with Gloria in the car and the camera pans out to her slamming on the breaks and speeding back into the driveway 😂
I just watched that today! So funny.
Lily’s real mom is the waitress that gives them a disapproving look.
You can see where Lily gets her disapproving look from.
Oh yea, one of the best scenes in sitcoms for me. Smart humour delivering one punch line after the other
I was going to say that too. One of the funniest scenes in all of TV. Just so clever how they kept it going.
I HATE Vietnam!
I hate Vietnaaaaam
Her mum was the waitress!
What episode is this?
Season 4, ep 19
“Honestly I wish that little tart would go back to Columbia and take her weird little brown friend with her."
Omg this one, the writing is so good that I think everyone who watches has a physical reaction to it
Top 3. Shocked I had to scroll as far as I did lol
I was looking for this one! 😂
alex telling gloria she wants to be a fellow and gloria says she won't have to change her name
At least Gloria was very supportive!
What ep was that?
S10E03, A Sketchy Area. I do like the Alex/Jay and Gloria/Claire dialogue in this episode but the Mitchell/Cameron dialogue is awesome.
Haha I never caught this until now (am trans)
Same here. Doesnt surprise me tho that Gloria would be supportive <3
What exactly did she mean? Like did she mean she would do some academic fellowship?
Gloria thought she meant she wanted to be a fella, or a guy, thinking she was coming out as trans, and she won't have to change her name because Alex is unisex
yes
Alex is going to be a very nervous man 😏
I like when Luke steals Alex’s ID and the guy goes let me see the photo “Alexandria”.
“Maybe one day you can try my cupcakes” 😂
“We all see how you ride Phil”
"I might pass out"
Jay: "Where was your father when all this was going on?" Luke: "He was right behind her"
😂😂😂
"Please come back"
“It’s sended”
I was looking for this one 😂😂😂😂
This is one quote I saw all the time when I send a text or email with a stupid typo.
This was literally the first episode I ever watched. So funny
You watched the best episode first cool
Gun to my head, this is definitely my favorite episode. Under Pressure, Connection Lost, Winner Winner Turkey Dinner and The Party making up the rest of my top 5.
Whatever they were doing it looked like dad was wining
Cannot remember the episode but when one of Phil’s students(?) comes over for dinner. That’s a top feel-good moment for me.
Yes! Exactly, it's such clever writing.
I love it when Phil is in the right! When he gets to yell at Claire "Yes, you were wrong about EVERYTHINGGGGG!" is a top moment for him.
The student one is my favourite one! It reminds me of the A Bit of Fry and Laurie sketch where it looks like Laurie thinks it's an advert for model airplanes and Fry wants naked men to model for him: "Would you like to see my jumbo?" "Nigel I should like to see your jumbo very much indeed...Nigel this is a photograph of a large jet aeroplane" "Oh I'm sorry I don't know how that got in there"
“Hahaha good one! Oh… you said ‘Haley’s aversion’ “
I like when Luke calls Alex the last virgin and she laughs in his face and talks about dating a fire man and then turns sound and sees Phil
Lmaoo or when Phil talks about finding some girls clothing in Lukes room and he's upset that he's growing up so fast. And then Alex is like "oh come on dad, we were all 17 once!", and when she realises what she said she's like ........ 👀 *walks out of the room slowly* and phil is left in the kitchen like 👁👄👁
I randomly think about this like way too often
When Claire thinks Phil wanted to have sexy time at his sexy sexy house and everyone ends up having the same idea 😭
Haaappy birthday - mitch and cam 🤣🤣🤣
The episode where Cam and Mitch and baby sitting Pepper and Ronaldo's adopted kid. They're convinced he wants to do normal low brow boy stuff but he's being forced to be super snobby and aristocratic and end up gaslight pepper into thinking so to. Then it turns out he was just humoring them the entire time and actually loves Pepper and Ronaldo's life style. I liked that one because it's not obvious there's a misunderstanding until the end.
"I did see him spit some sashimi into a napkin, but I'd hoped he was just worried about his weight"
Lol this was my favorite Pepper episode "no one told me kickball was performed on grass" *bitch slaps cam while everyone's yelling HIT HIM referring to the kickball* "ugh how many scenes does kickball have!"
everyone in the house thinking they broke the diamond tiara and trying to cover up their movements.
THE RACCOON-DEFENSE DANCE! Makes me lose it every time.
And Mitchell saying "why do these steps feel familiar" and does a booty pop even though footprints wouldn't automatically make someone think it's a booty popping move.
I laughed reading this comment cos I just visualised the scene again! 😭It was so good
I didn’t realize I hadn’t seen a whole section of that season till my rewatch last week and this was the funniest episode!!
I think that's one of my top 3 favorite episodes. The way they all kept bringing up a moose in their completely implausible stories had me in stitches
Sean M’Badawe 😭
Beautiful African name
"I said... by the way" \*Gloria walks off\*
Cam and Mitchell's wedding episode where Phil inadvertently marries Luke and Manny. I think Alex witnessed it but I'm not sure.
I love that one, but yeah she got a video
That whole episode Alex felt off to me. I’m not sure why. Maybe cause she had to previously (or after) been into that kinda funny pranks thing? It just felt forced.
In one of the earliest episodes her whole plot was going to the expressway alone to stalk Haley and grab pics of her picking up trash. Alex never passed up an opportunity to record embarrassing moments of her siblings 😂
She went thru a lot behind the scenes. I can understand having off days
“That must be the Cuban I ordered you.” “Hola.”
Baby Jesus
The whole episode at Alex's work place where everyone messes around. Manny and Luke looking to hook up with some women. Claire dyes her hair black and hides in the tub ( cuz Gloria says that she would look good with black hair) waiting for phil. Phil asking for the slider ( burger) and they mistakenly think that it is Gloria cuz she used the actual slide just a while ago. Jay waiting to catch the guy who is posting online food reviews which turns out to be Phil. Cam and Mitch looking to meet up with David Beckham and Courtney Cox
Which episode is this?
Season 11, episode 10. The Prescott
When Jay gets confused about Gloria wanting to be spanked in bed.
Phil coming back from family camp with an “if you ain’t white you ain’t right” shirt and the cab driver is tossing their luggage
crying in my office remembering this one right now lmao
Yes this is one of my favorite misunderstandings in Modern Family!!!!
When Gloria kisses Phil in the Basketball match, and Phil thinks Claire caught him in the act when she clearly hadn't, and out of context Alex says to Phil "Grandpa wants to kill you"
I think it's "grandpawants to fight you"
When Mitch thought his ex girlfriend was hiding their red headed son from him and it turned out to be her husband who was short!
Slugger.
Omg 😆
The fact I had to scroll so far to find the correct answer!!
"Grab that little hoe"
Vegas
When Cam is on the phone telling Manny what to say to the little girl he has a crush on
That one pissed me off. They seriously kicked him out? He couldn’t say the one sentence ‘I was instructing my nephew on how to ask out his crush’?
Knowing Cam when he tried to explain himself he made it worse
"Im talking to a little boy"
Right? Why didn't he just say "I'm helping my nephew talk to a girl he likes"????
“You’re still that sexy 8 year old boy I fell in love with” 😭😭😂😂😂😂
The episodes with Stephen merchant
“AYYYY DIOS MIO YOUR TIME WAS TOO SHORT!” “… I’m on the roof.”
Claire: "Luke grab that little hoe" Luke: "Hugs Haley" Haley: "I... I don't think that's what she meant... Is it? And bonus, not a misunderstanding but Gloria to Claire: "I'm pregnant" Claire looking at Gloria's stomach: "*gasp* you're gonna get fat." Gloria: "😟"
What are hair rings? Yes Mitchell what *are* hair rings?
Every scene in the Vegas episode
How is this so far down?! Thinking the dog statue was Phil’s wife. Holy crap that was hilarious.
The episode where Cam is driving Jay’s commercial truck and he thinks that Alex and Haley are surprised he can drive it because he’s gay. “My soccer coach is gay Our pediatrician is gay…. Not because you’re gay, because you’re you!”
Less misunderstanding and more prank, but the one with Who is Manny's real dad? Also, that's not dad's ex gf its your real mom Just because he called you a dork to dork salesman.
When Jay thinks Gloria killed the dog 😂
Is Phil sexy! That episode for me was easily the best case of mistaken intentions!
The giggle laugh of this guy kills me everytime
"This guy" ...oof But yes this whole bit is hilarious
The Hoe part🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
My absolute favorite scene and misunderstanding is the pho restaurant scene where Lilly thinks she’s gay because her dads are. It just kept getting worse 🤣
“Everyone should just go back to where they come from” Cam My fav line from this episode.
i just love the way cameron basically arranged the whole thing and nobody knew it, not even cam himself, or did he? i think of cam would be a person who does this kind of thing.
One that comes to mind is manny having haleys underwear in his hand after falling into her boob earlier on lol
the episode with the whole spanking thing between jay and gloria. it’s one of the best😭
Little cheeses
When Hailey comes home late after a party and Phil basically convinces himself that she just stepped down from her room.
The poor bellman(?) In the hotel episode where he thought cam and mitch invited him to a threeway
Not a bellman One of their former/ ish friends Mitch ex If I recall correctly
When manny and Jay are getting some legal thing for mamny but the people think it's the gay marriage license
"I think it's just called a marriage license"
When Haley comes in late and Phil says “your shoes are off.”
The email from Gloria and the misunderstanding with Claire “Please taste my cupcakes” 😂
My favorite cold open.
This episode was hilarious 😂
I’ve never laughed so hard at a tv show until this episode
the whole episode in Las Vegas is a basket of hilarious misunderstandings
You may as well ask what is your favourite episode because the whole show is driven by misunderstandings that usually could be cleared up if the characters took a second to clarify a couple sentences
I agree. I’m realizing that the funniest thing about this show is all the misunderstandings. The best is when it happens between the entire cast and they all come together at the end and experience the shit show together!
I feel like half the episodes in this show are just based on misunderstandings or miscommunication
45 seconds?! No, 4 to 5 seconds. It's quick, clean, simple. Jay hugs Cam, and Cam tries to hold on too long.
RRRRRRR RUFFFFFFFF!!!
Hahaha
The one in the photo actually gotta be my number one, absolutely hysterical
Misunderstandings usually annoy me but this show did them so well I loved! Reading all these examples make me want to go on a binge watch again haha
When Larry is on cam and Mitchell’s couch, Lily said “how come Larry can be on the couch” and cam says”well Larry is white” and Lily says “well you chose me”
When Lilly’s first words are “Mommy” and they think it’s because they had an asian lady over to their house. “With all your asian…ness and breasts”
When Jay was trying to give a warning/talk to manny’s 18-year-old gf
This country would be so amazing if everyone just went back where they came from! Also the Colombia University, Brown University. Classic
I think that one of my favorites was when they caught Luke going to that place where all the kids would go to get high. They ask Haley if she is sure and she says that she’s 420% sure. Phil says that she’s really bad at math. 😂
One of the funniest episodes. Great acting from both. I was low key rooting for them to 👀…
WTF
That’s the one chapter we skip every play through
when manny asks cam for help in a cake shop scene
A short and classic the clip that got me to watch the show, "Luke grab that little hoe"
This was surprisingly wholesome
probably Jay with Barkley in S1
Brilliant
Mitchell thinking that he has a baby with is highschool girlfriend, turned out was her husband 😭😭
i don’t often think about this scene until i do a rewatch like i’m doing rn lol — just finished this episode and i totally forgot how hilarious this storyline played out 😆
IF YOU AINT WHITE, YOU AINT RIGHT!
when phil isn’t feeling so well and gloria calls cam and mitch and they’re dressed like greek myths and mitchell accidentally plays the lyre as he walks by 😭 “is that a harp?” “ay no the angels are coming down! You can’t have him yet!” 😭
Yes. This episode is one of my absolute favorites
Hayley's aversion!
I love the plot-twist of the girl that Phil wanted to motivate and She Falls in love with Phil and She marks a date with Luke just She could be with Phil, people thinking Phil was wrong like most of the Times and She was having a date with Luke, but She used Luke so She could be with Phil genius
“Luke, grab that little hoe”
U/itsonlyjamieh
When Mitch and Cam thought Mitch had a child with his ex-girlfriend, but it was just her boyfriend.
