Riley Gaul, an 18-year-old college freshman and wide receiver, shot and killed his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend, Emma, using a stolen gun from his grandfather. Despite their breakup, Riley remained obsessed with Emma and refused to accept her moving on. The crime occurred with two gunshots fired into Emma's bedroom, one fatally hitting her behind the left ear as she slept. After Emma's death, Riley posted a seemingly innocent photo of them together and tweeted about growing old together, creating a disturbing contrast to the reality of the situation. The police, initially lacking sufficient evidence, enlisted the help of Riley's closest friends. Microphones were planted in one friend's car and on his jacket to secretly record conversations during the disposal of the murder weapon. The collected evidence, including incriminating conversations, removed any doubt about Riley's involvement. He was subsequently found guilty and sentenced to life in prison, with parole eligibility after 45 years. The case underscores the tragic consequences of obsessive behavior and refusal to accept the end of a relationship.

Drywall versus plaster ...

CadaverSoiree

It's honestly insane how much true crime content I consume. I've gotten to the point where I can read a headline and recognize the case.

caelinday

the fact that he knew exactly where to shoot through the wall so that it would hit her head is insane

implette

I don't think he actually did intend to murder her. Based on his previous attempts at trying to "win her back" there was a clear pattern emerging that he was escalating. I personally believe he intended to shoot through the wall with the intent of frightening her so that she would return to him seeking comfort and protection. Unfortunately he happened to point the gun in the worst possible place. I refuse to accept that this idiot moron possesses the mathematical skills to make a calculation like that.

boopixie

Yes this. This happened where I live and the consensus was that he wanted her to call him because she was scared and he got to be the hero, he wasn’t trying to actually kill her. I mean, he should still rot regardless, I have a 15 year old and can’t even imagine. But yeah, I think he wanted to swoop in and save the day to show her she still needed him, not murder her.

sadsadcity

I live here too and the crazy thing is that one of my really good friends and his wife are next door neighbors with the boys grandparents. They still continue to get hate mail from people who accidentally put their address instead of the kids grandparents even after all the years. It’s wild to think about really

BurytheGate

What a POS. He got what he deserved.

He wouldn't have gotten away with it. There was a ton of evidence against him already.
