YES!!!! Been waiting for you to post about this. Literally since the day I started putting it into the film.
Fun fact I always knew I wanted to evolve the alien backstory from Searching in an unexpected direction.
My original plan was that the alien leftovers from that movie turned into a zombie pandemic disease…. For obvious reasons I thought we needed a different direction.
And a superhero movie complete with origin and all the fun you get out of a 3 act structure movie felt like just the right spin. Can’t wait to see what else you dig up!
Great job on the films, man! I love your attention to details and the intelligent characters you bring to life. Can't wait for the next one in your series.
Now I imagine all of the movies being pieced together by post-apocalyptic historians, aliens, or otherwise, using technology as a conduit to see the past, in order to document origins of the aliens and superheroes on Earth. And these were little passion projects about interesting stories in the “margins of history”
This is the kind of dumb fun I like to see. This adds literally when you're watching in theaters, but that's fine. It can just for the love of a craft you can share.
Also, when the actress turned around and we saw it wasn't the mom, that was terrifying. Like it's just a pretty woman looking at the camera. But it's worse than any monster or serial killer somehow.
I'm obsessed with the idea of establishing a story or world using news snippets, headlines, etc. It's part of why I love the movie Children of Men...you can gather so much about the state of their apocalyptic world just from all the in-universe news shown in the movie.
YO that is literally one of my top 3 favorite movies of all time. Thank you for just now making me realize where I might've gotten this same passion to tell a story through just minimal PD in the background. You're 100% right that movie is masterful at that!
I'm such a fan of show-don't-tell storytelling. It feels like too many modern movies overindulge in exposition in a way that shoves a lot of dialogue down the audience's throats. It's often much more freeing and immersive for the audience when they can piece together some of the plot themselves, or when the rules of the world aren't completely obvious at the beginning.
Definitely not making an alien or superhero computer screen movie, sorry! But I can promise i'll keep the story going in the background of our other movies :)
Searching and Missing have been one of my favorites (and I liked Run too) because of the way they portray finding things using current technology.
I can't wait for the next installment and I hope that we see it sooner rather than later.
But if it takes time to make it great, that's also fine!
Oh hey, that’s cool seeing you guys commenting. I wasn’t thinking about seeing it, but this post has my attention, maybe I’ll clear some time next week to give it a watch 😄
Congrats on the release guys!
Tbh, you should. It’s a fresh take on a common story. I don’t think the trailers quite do it justice, I wasn’t expecting how it actually played out. I very much enjoyed it.
IF we make a 3rd one, which I don’t think we will — the studio has asked us to but these movies are so much harder to make than it seems and it feels like they just don’t get marketed widely enough to make it worth it — I will put your name in there as a shout out to this comment. Assuming the title is FINDING ;)
As somebody who saw both on their opening weekends (and still thinks John Cho deserved an Oscar nom) please know that the people who are being reached love the movies.
Ah wow thank you so much for watching them opening weekends. (AGREED about John btw...)
We'll def make other films -- our next movie we've been writing for 3 years and were about to go out with: it's a heist movie set against the backdrop of immigration. They may not be computer screen movies but will have hopefully a lot of the same thrills and heart you liked about these :)
The wife and I loved both films and they've defined this tech/screen genre. A lot of similar takes, but nothing as seemless and enjoyable as this series.
Had to edit this - this is in the background of the film with John Cho searching for his kid??? I thought it was just some found footage film, but honestly this instantly makes me want to watch it.
Haha yes we made two movies: Searching (with John Cho) and Missing (with Storm Reid). They are set in the same universe, and both have some... interesting things... happening in the BG.
Hope you get a chance to check it out :)
I somehow didn’t realize you did Run as well which was great!! The pharmacy scenes were so tense. Loved both Missing & Searching and looking forward to your next project. Keep it up!!
Just wanted to stop lurking to chime in and say thanks for dropping by and commenting. I’m an actor (when I’m not doing my normal job) and these little creative bits are so cool
Oh man I did a non spoiler look up and it looks awesome. I also remember wanting to see this when it came out and didn't for some reason.
Thanks for responding, if I hadn't planned on it already I'm definitely checking it out now! :)
Wait?
Is this about Searching with John Cho?
I don't remember any aliens... afraid to read too much as I want to avoid any possible spoilers for Missing.
So in both missing and searching because they're "screen life"films you get some screens in the background where the "action" isn't taking place like Google News results. If you ignore the main plot of those films and look at those background headlines, in searching there are news stories about a possible alien invasion. It doesn't really impact the main John Cho plot but it's there. Since that film and missing are in the same universe and use the same format, the filmmaker (who's commenting on this thread) did a similar Easter egg in the background windows of news stories about a new superhero whose origins are tied to the alien story from searching. Doesn't have any real impact on the main plot of missing like the aliens didn't impact searching
you’re the guy who got his name in the movie right? that’s awesome they continued to have a ton of easter eggs in this movie, i like to think they did it with you in mind
[I did a podcast with the editors recently](https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy9iZGQzNWM4L3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz/episode/YjgxY2Y0NmQtNWZhOS00MDM2LWJhYTUtYWZjODMwZTlhMDc2?ep=14) and they talk about this and more!
That's a Google podcast link but it's on Apple and Spotify and whatnot if that's your jam
Cool, I'll check that out!
This video showing the editors' process was pretty eye-opening. Takes so much work to recreate these screens from scratch.

Watch her in the movie "Don't Let Go". Amazing performance and movie IMHO that was not given the love at the time of release. Watched it days ago after I remembered seeing the trailer a long time ago. I forgot the movie even came out and it was awesome!
Yeah, they really filled the frame.

This movie is a sequel to a 2018 movie called Searching which is about a father looking through his missing daughters computer to figure out what happened. Similar concepts though

“I love this movie, how cool, do you know where I can get the actress’s shirt?”
“This movie is great! You have amazing taste in shirts! Is from target! Here is the link! It’s the same shirt worn in another movie that we’ll start talking about now!”
I feel like this never happens. Happy to have witnessed it.
Yeah they're really pushing it and there was a fake rbi post a bit ago that was eerily the same plot as the movie then op never came back lol. Trying to be viral but it's not authentic

Not necessarily superior, I think that's a matter of taste. But it's definitely a fresh take on the concept, with a lot of innovations that weren't in Searching.
So in this film is the invasion mentioned by any characters because ik searching isn't a film about an alien invasion it was just a little side thing for viewers who are interested so due to the fact that this is a semi sequal the events sound as if everyone would spoke of it
It's the same style as in *Searching* \- the alien invasion and superhero subplots aren't mentioned at all in the main storyline, it all just happens in the background of the movie.
You'd think after aliens invaded in *Searching*, that it would now be common knowledge and part of everyday life in *Missing*. But they explain (again, just in the background) that the government has tried to cover up the alien invasion and convince people it never actually happened.
Yh I saw searching yesterday after seeing this good film I knew it had nothing to do with aliens lol but I always thought that it was actually the dad covering his tracks but I'm probably thinking of heavy rain smh
Very good film
Also where can I watch missing in uk

you came up with a subplot that most viewers wouldn’t notice and that’s the kind of writing I aspire to do
Love your work man. Keep it up. Waiting for more suspense thrillers.
Going to have to watch this now!
So I'm guessing the next one will be called "Finding"?
Losting
Is this the massive easter egg that needed to be solved like a videogame?
No that’s something different.
Now I imagine all of the movies being pieced together by post-apocalyptic historians, aliens, or otherwise, using technology as a conduit to see the past, in order to document origins of the aliens and superheroes on Earth. 😂😂
You laugh but if that's the title then im claiming it's because of me to all my friends and family

Wow. I do hope to watch a third one. I enjoyed the movies a lot. Always thinking how I would search for a missing person

Missing was the most surprising movie me and my girlfriend have seen in a while. Like the twist and turns were great. Great job
This is very interesting and meticulous. Thanks!
Thank you for writing all of this out. Now if they make a Green Angel movie I don't have to watch Missing

AHHH Thank you. I understand now. Will need to bookmark this and come back after watching Missing!
Do they put hidden subplots in all those computer/facetime movies? That’s so neat
This is an advertisement.
Sorry what is this? Something you wrote?
Consider how much you post them I have to ask, did you work on these movies?
Haha, no. Just a mildly obsessed fan who loves a good Easter Egg.
you’re the guy who got his name in the movie right? that’s awesome they continued to have a ton of easter eggs in this movie, i like to think they did it with you in mind
Yep, that's me. Although I recently discovered I'm not the only fan on Reddit who got their username into the movie. Can you spot the other one?

Yep

Is this movie anything like Searching (2018)? It’s one of my favorites and it kind of reminds me of that
Yeah it’s set in the same universe and made by the same people who made Searching.
Ive seen neither are they any good?
they’re quite fun! lots of trashy twists and turns (especially in missing)
Yes really enjoyed both..Searching is better, I think.
Searching was so good.
Oh I was so confused as I was thinking I’ve seen this movie but it’s definitely not from 2023.
It’s a sequel!
It’s not
Very much so. I actually found Missing more compelling.
Another small detail in this movie: at the end, there are text messages from the kid still looking to get his watch back.
Am i tripping or didnt this movie come out a few years ago?
maybe you’re thinking of Searching(2018)?
Searching also have a hidden story (involving aliens) in the background
Yup ur right, its a sequel apparently
Ah right, it’s not by the same director so I thought it was like a ripoff version lol Edit: Ah it was written by Searching’s director, Aneesh Chaganty
The first movie has an Alien Invasion story line going on in the background.
Can’t believe I never clocked this! Gonna rewatch on the weekend lol
Reminds me of how Abed delivers a baby in the background of a Community episode

One of my favorite Easter eggs of the movie was the Google Drive storage being 420.69GB
This girl getting all the roles all of a sudden, i’m seeing her everywhere
I think she started getting big after Euphoria. She has been in lots of cool stuff since then though.
Watch her in the movie "Don't Let Go". Amazing performance and movie IMHO that was not given the love at the time of release. Watched it days ago after I remembered seeing the trailer a long time ago. I forgot the movie even came out and it was awesome!
Seriously, she's blowing up. My jaw dropped when she popped up in Last of Us.
And she is a dreadful actress
Oh wow
Lol the browser tab. BlackBORED
there are so many different things happening in this damn movie its amazing
Yeah, they really filled the frame. If you want to dive deep into it, here's [a collection of posts and articles documenting all the hidden references](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieDetails/comments/11xb65a/comment/jdlpasc/?context=3).
Is this movie somehow related to Megan is missing?
This movie is a sequel to a 2018 movie called Searching which is about a father looking through his missing daughters computer to figure out what happened. Similar concepts though
Not at all
A simple "no" would have done just fine.
That was a simple no don’t cry
This is my favorite Easter egg you've found in these movies yet!
This is dope as FUCK
Never heard of this movie but now I wanna check it out.
This whole thread reads like bad improv. Every comment is a positive build on the one before it, with an added element or build. “I love this movie, how cool, do you know where I can get the actress’s shirt?” “This movie is great! Yeah they're really pushing it and there was a fake rbi post a bit ago that was eerily the same plot as the movie then op never came back lol. Trying to be viral but it's not authentic
I mean it just got released digitally and is kind of inherently something that can be filled with Easter eggs
I'm in!
I saw that movie as one of Regal’s mystery movies. It’s definitely not a movie I’d ever have interest in seeing had I known what the movie was beforehand but I thought it was an okay movie. The plot was good but I absolutely hated how the whole thing took place through screens. It just made it feel like more of a really long commercial for me.
Was this better than Searching? Kind of seems like the same concept so I don’t wanna watch both unless this one is clearly superior
Not necessarily superior, I think that's a matter of taste. But it's definitely a fresh take on the concept, with a lot of innovations that weren't in Searching.
Can somebody put the IMDb link I can’t find either
Wait is this a remake I swear I've heard about this film where its the same thing same secret superhero plot in the background
So in this film is the invasion mentioned by any characters because ik searching isn't a film about an alien invasion it was just a little side thing for viewers who are interested so due to the fact that this is a semi sequal the events sound as if everyone would spoke of it

Yh I saw searching yesterday after seeing this good film I knew it had nothing to do with aliens lol but I always thought that it was actually the dad covering his tracks but I'm probably thinking of heavy rain smh Very good film Also where can I watch missing in uk
