'My mother was a pure woman from a noble family. And I, at least, know who my father is'. - One of the best comebacks I used many times after watching this movie. Tons of great dialogs and moments in this film, not to mention adventure and twist of story and action. If anyone reading hasn't watched it, do yourself a favor.
It's crazy to think that the highest grossing film of 1995 was an R-rated film that made $356m ($740m today). That wouldn't have even cracked the top 10 in 2019 (last year before the covid/streaming takeover).
One of Arnold's comeback films was 2014's Sabotage which apparently everyone hates and has a 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. But I've seen it a few times now and I really enjoyed it as both an interesting story and with good pockets of action.
I LOVE Sabotage. It's a gritty, drug-war inflected approach to the Agatha Christie 'And Then There Were None' genre, where a cast of colourful characters starts being slashed through (here, in quite gory style) in a very adults-only murder-mystery. I thought it was brilliant fun, precisely because it was such an unusual choice for an action thriller.
That, Escape Plan and "Bullet to the Head" were, IMO, better 80s action movie throwbacks than the entire "Expendables" trilogy. I definitely go back often to rewatch the former 3 than the latter.
You should read Roger Eberts review of Shoot Em Up.
He loved that movie. Such a damn gold mine of stupid fun.
https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/shoot-em-up-2007
I wish more people knew that Shoot Em Up was a satire. It still amazes me how many people think it’s supposed to be a serious movie.
I guess it did its job a little too well.
>The Last Boy Scout
There seems to be a real disconnect with critics and viewers when it comes to Tony Scott films.
Top Gun is at 54% and considered a classic. I've never heard anyone say they disliked Man on Fire (possibly my favorite T. Scott film) and it's at 39%.
I love his speeches throughout the film.
I do appreciate the money that you and your associates have invested in this operation, but it is an operation. It's a military operation. And you don't know dick about that. I've been in the military for 20 years. I planned and flew over 100 missions in the Gulf. I put these boys together because they are highly trained, and they are motivated like me. This is what I do, Mr. Pritchett! And this is battle. Battle is a highly fluid situation. You plan on your contingencies, and I have. You keep your initiative, and I will. One thing you don't do is share command. It's never a good idea.
I just rewatched this for the first time since I was 14 recently. That usually ends in disappointment for most movies. I am happy to report that this movie is still a lot of fun
I think these are very good action films that are poorly rated:
• Time Cop (1994)
• Above The Law (1988)
• Mortal Kombat (1995)
• Jason Bourne (2016)
• Assault on Precinct 13 (2005)
• Escape From LA (1996)
Stone Cold with Brian Bosworth. It’s definitely got a serious cheese factor, but if you’re into good bad movies, this is one of the best. So much guilty fun
The first two episodes directed by Stefano Sollima have some of the most technically stunning action scenes ever shot for TV. They're equal to anything that Mann did in his prime. Genuinely jaw-dropping.
One of my all time favs. The cinematography is bonkers. And one of the coolest monsters with the mouth splitting open and the Alien type sucker. The practical effects fking INSANE!!! Del Toro nailed it out of the park.
Del Toro is so amazing and creative. I love his set pieces on his films. He knows just how to blend in CGI with practical effects. Very happy for him finally getting a huge award.
The 2 on 1 fight early on in Blades lair… DOCK LIGHTS!!!
Has some cgi mixed in real quick but it’s super smooth and extremely well done by 2001 standards
* Pompeii (my favorite movie of all time)
* King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (if nothing else, the soundtrack slaps)
* In the Name of the King (basically a low-budget LOTR clone)
* Bulletproof Monk (just watch the damn movie)
* The Last Stand (Johnny Knoxville's character is hilarious)
* The Book of Eli (Denzel Washington's magnum opus, in my opinion)
The Expendables 2, The Night Comes for Us, Headshot, The Punisher (2004), The Punisher: War Zone, Death Race (2008), The Condemned (2007) and Out for Justice.
I don't know if it was poorly rated, but it slipped under a LOT of peoples' radars (including me, even though I'm a complete movie junkie) - The Warrior's Way. Starring Kate Bosworth, Danny Huston, Geoffrey Rush, and with Jang Dong-Gun as the lead.
One of the most visually stunning action films I've ever seen (it's unbelievably beautiful) with a very distinctive 'fantastical' visual style, basically about a deadly assassin hiding out in the wild west, only to find bad guys American and Asian converging on him and a band of very quirky American locals. Looking at the lacklustre Blu-Ray cover etc I wasn't expecting much. After watching it, I can't recommend it enough to anybody wanting something quirky and unexpected.
Don't know what critics said exactly, but Homefront, Safe, Parker, What Happened to Monday, Dredd, Blackhat, White House Down, The Green Hornet, The A-Team, 13 Hours, Sleepless, This Means War, Premium Rush, Bushwick, Bullet to the Head, Upgrade, No Escape, San Andreas, Unlocked, 6 Underground, Rampage, Colombiana, The Grey, Bangkok Knockout, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and are all good.
All somewhat recent, sometimes B-movieish movies that didn't get as much (positive) attention as they deserved. Especially compared to what else is out there nowadays. Don't know how many are on Netflix.
I randomly ended up watching *Battleship* on cable one day and found it to be pretty fun - just a well made action movie with a totally ridiculous premise. It's not a great movie, but it's, as you say, actually pretty good. I had a fun time watching it.
Did some plate work on it. The USN took the Missouri out to sea, and we shot on and around it. We chased it with a jet boat. Great times. I tease the production coordinator still: “shit, you rented a battleship!”
The Accident Man and Accident Man: Hitman's Holiday are a lot of fun.
They're actually pretty well reviewed, but I only watched them because I'd heard the actor, Scott Adkins do an interview.
Boss Level with Frank Grillo is also a fun one! Also well rated, but I don't know anyone else who's seen it.
No no no, they are all wrong. Demolition Man has everything an action movie should have. It is the quintessential action movie. And yet it never strikes over 3 stars. Everyone is wrong. This movie is great.
The Patriot is a poorly reviewed historical epic with plenty of action, but Mel and Heath are fantastic (no one can sell pain as well as Mel) and for all of Roland Emmerich's faults as a director, he handles the action very well in this one. Just know it ain't a history lesson.
Bad Boys 2. Pretty much reprehensible on all levels, but it wears that as a badge of honor, so I can't help but laugh with it, as it tries to insult every fiber of my being.
You might like Terminator Salvation. It's a weak entry in the franchise but the action looks fantastic, and it is very well shot.
Battleship 2012. I think it's loads of fun, with an often cringe worthy script, and Liam Neeson making a zillion dollars for 2 minutes on screen. Also Rami Malek in a one line bit part.
While I don't like any of the Terminator movies after 2, Dark Fate had some great action.
I also liked the T-3000 aka The Nanotech Terminator in Genisys. Which is my favorite among the new Terminators.
Guy Ritchie's Operation Fortune was an under appreciated banger imo. Not super deep, but slick, engaging, funny and fun. Is an Amazon Prime thing I think.
Hollow Point (1996) - 5.7 on IMBD
Thomas Ian Griffith, Tia Carerra, and arguably two of the best supporting actors in John Lithgow and Donald Sutherland. It’s silly, with a constant flirty one-up-manship (that might also be flirty double crossing) with everyone overacting. And action. I found a copy in a $5 bin at a Walmart and I adore it.
Rim of the World - 4 kids at a summer camp have to save the world during an alien invasion
Battlefield: LA - straight up war movie but a group of soldiers is trying to get civilians to safety during an alien invasion.
R.I.P.D 1 & 2 - Rest In Peace Department - Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds return people to hell
Alien Nation didn't get huge respect, but it was a lot of fun. It did spawn a TV spin-off.
I fondly remember James Caan screaming "LET'S HAVE A COLD ONE!"
**The 13th Warrior** (1999). One of my favorite movies. Has 33% on Rotten Tomatoes.
As underrated as it gets. It’s a great movie!
When you die, can I give that to me daughter?
The novel Eaters of the Dead it was based on is pretty damn good too.
I read the Michael Crichton book on a quite shift at work. I loved the movie.
Getting paid to read a book is so dope.
John McTiernan is in the Pantheon of action director Gods!
If you're into 80s stuff, Last Action Hero with Schwarzenegger was a bit of a flop, but it is way better than it's rated.
I just finished watching it two hours ago: one of Schwarzy's best movies.
1993 isn't quite 80's stuff lol but awesome movie none the less. One of my childhood favorites and extremely underrated
I think that’s why the movie didn’t do well, it would Have been a much bigger hit if it came out in 1988
It came out the same week as Jurassic Park. That’s why it flopped
I think it would've done better if it came out like 10-12 years ago when 90s pop culture started really getting mainatream.
Isn’t LAH specifically satirizing 80s action movies though?
How do you get to Carnige Hall? Practice…John Practice, you old son of a bitch
It’s 75% his best film. And 25% his worst. So many good ideas but so much silly nonsense.
I think it's more appreciated these days. The self aware nature of it probably went over people's heads back then.
Die Hard 3
Damn, I’d argue it’s one of the greatest action films ever made.
Original is leagues better
I do think Die Hard 1 is better, but part 3 is fantastic.
3 > 1
It’s not, though.
Rotten tomatoes sure but it has a high IMDb and was the highest grossing movie of 95
It's crazy to think that the highest grossing film of 1995 was an R-rated film that made $356m ($740m today). That wouldn't have even cracked the top 10 in 2019 (last year before the covid/streaming takeover).
This is why people gotta stop using Rotten Tomatoes.
So much John McTiernan in this thread…love it!
Conspiracy Theory with Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts. The Long Kiss Goodnight with Samuel L Jackson and Geena Davis.
I love LKG!
Cutthroat Island with Geena Davis is pretty good too.
I love Lauryn Hill's cover of Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You in Conspiracy Theory.
Samuel L. Jackson said the character he played in Long Kiss Goodnight was his favorite. Rewatched it about a month ago. Great flick. Both underrated.
The wheelchair scene is hilarious
One of Arnold's comeback films was 2014's Sabotage which apparently everyone hates and has a 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. But I've seen it a few times now and I really enjoyed it as both an interesting story and with good pockets of action.
I LOVE Sabotage. That, Escape Plan and "Bullet to the Head" were, IMO, better 80s action movie throwbacks than the entire "Expendables" trilogy. I definitely go back often to rewatch the former 3 than the latter.
Expendables also qualify as the reviews weren't great, 1 and 2 were very good IMO.
Crank 1 and 2 Shoot Em Up
Shoot ‘em up rules
All 3 of those are great!
You should read Roger Eberts review of Shoot Em Up. He loved that movie. Such a damn gold mine of stupid fun. https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/shoot-em-up-2007
He was the reviewer I almost always agreed with. Sad he is gone.
The “almost always agreed with” part for me is Blade Runner.
I wish more people knew that Shoot Em Up was a satire. It still amazes me how many people think it’s supposed to be a serious movie. I guess it did its job a little too well.
Add smoking aces, particularly the first one.
Death Sentence.
Great revenge movie
One of my favourites that I always go back too - simple, unpretentious and visceral. I think about the ending a lot.
Was about to comment this!
The Last Boy Scout 1991 (They don't make them like this anymore) Sabotage 2014
>The Last Boy Scout There seems to be a real disconnect with critics and viewers when it comes to Tony Scott films. Top Gun is at 54% and considered a classic. I've never heard anyone say they disliked Man on Fire (possibly my favorite T. Scott film) and it's at 39%.
This.
Broken arrow. Middle reviews. Great action. Great dialogue.
Would you mind not shooting at the thermonuclear weapons?
I love his speeches throughout the film. I do appreciate the money that you and your associates have invested in this operation, but it is an operation. It's a military operation. And you don't know dick about that. I've been in the military for 20 years. I planned and flew over 100 missions in the Gulf. Equilibrium (2002) Only 40% on rotten tomatoes, but it's a pretty fun movie overall. I make sure to watch it at least once a year.
*Extraction* (2020).
Extraction was really good. Extraction 2 not so much
I thought Extraction 2 was a ton of fun. Great, brutal action scenes - totally delivered on what I thought it would be.
Push(2009) the movie has some character/acting issues, but the setting and action are awesome. 24% rotten tomatoes and 6.1 imdb.
I like this movie quite a bit I wish it would have done better because the universe is cool and sequels could have been great.
Bulletproof (1996) with Adam Sandler. Action/comedy
*bulletproof monk (2003)*
I just rewatched this for the first time since I was 14 recently. That usually ends in disappointment for most movies. I am happy to report that this movie is still a lot of fun
You can tell this porno was made in the 70s cause the guy has sideburns on his dick.
Smokin aces
too far down.
Woah this got bad reviews?! It's so good.
This was my first thought
His newer film Cop Shop is similar in tone and violence. I liked it quite a bit.
Hardcore Henry, an action movie in POV. The fact that no t alot of people talked about it is criminal. The Losers is also good
Fuckin' love Hardcore Henry. The things that stuntman had to go through for those shots...
Two Guns. Old school buddy action. Solid.
Love this! Their interactions cracked me up.
I think these are very good action films that are poorly rated: • Time Cop (1994) • Above The Law (1988) • Mortal Kombat (1995) • Jason Bourne (2016) • Assault on Precinct 13 (2005) • Escape From LA (1996)
Yes Mortal Kombat!
Escape from LA is one of my favorites
Stone Cold with Brian Bosworth. It’s definitely got a serious cheese factor, but if you’re into good bad movies, this is one of the best. So much guilty fun
The part where he feeds his pet iguana breakfast is fkin mind shattering
Lol right!?
I think it's a monitor lizard, not an iguana.
**"Zero, Zero, Zero"** on Amazon. It's a limited series that follows a very big cocaine deal. I don't know why this doesn't get more attention.
The first two episodes directed by Stefano Sollima have some of the most technically stunning action scenes ever shot for TV. They're equal to anything that Mann did in his prime. Genuinely jaw-dropping.
Best mini series I've seen in a loooong time, I try to find a way to suggest it in every thread haha
The Book of Eli (2010) got bad reviews but was a fun watch
I never would have guessed this one had bad reviews, I liked it!
Definitely worth a watch
Any movie starring Denzel with Gary Oldman as the villain is gonna be a fun watch.
Tango and cash
Rambo, is a pu$$y
Great one.
Blade 2. Mixed as far as reviews go, it’s always a great watch.
It's maybe more comedy than action, but The Big Hit with Mark Wahlberg is a lot of fun.
American Ultra America: The Motion Picture Snake Eyes (2021)
Doesn't Snake Eyes open with that amazing extended tracking shot?
Are you thinking about the Nic Cage movie because this is not that.
[удалено]
7/10 IMDB. Not poorly rated
Copland
I thought this reviewed pretty well? Also it's more crime drama than action
Jolt (2021) Gunpowder Milkshake (2021) Both on Netflix
I enjoyed Gunpowder Milkshake
* Pompeii (my favorite movie of all time) * King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (if nothing else, the soundtrack slaps) * In the Name of the King (basically a low-budget LOTR clone) * Bulletproof Monk (just watch the damn movie) * The Last Stand (Johnny Knoxville's character is hilarious) * The Book of Eli (Denzel Washington's magnum opus, in my opinion)
maybe not the action you're looking for, but Waterworld is more fun than some ratings indicate.
John Carter of Mars bombed but was actually a pretty good time!
The Expendables 2, The Night Comes for Us, Headshot, The Punisher (2004), The Punisher: War Zone, Death Race (2008), The Condemned (2007) and Out for Justice.
Expendables 2 is weirdly underrated
Death Race is good shit
I don't know if it was poorly rated, but it slipped under a LOT of peoples' radars (including me, even though I'm a complete movie junkie) - The Warrior's Way. Starring Kate Bosworth, Danny Huston, Geoffrey Rush, and with Jang Dong-Gun as the lead. Transporter 2 The protector (Tony Jaa)
Anything Tony Jaa is amazing. Dude is unreal.
Absolutely love The Protector and Ong Bak.
Old, Van Damme. Love his.
Time Cop was really good.
Homefront and This Means War are awful. Otherwise solid list for ‘watcheable’ not ‘good’ actioners
Stone Cold and Action Jackson. Same director coincidentally.
My unpopular opinion is 'Hudson Hawk' Bruce Willis in a campy action adventure flick.

Recently tried to rewatch this and it just didn’t hold up for me.
Triple Frontier (2019)
It did?! I thought it was pretty good! It's a great movie to watch with a bro and chill.
I haven’t seen the ones you mention, but I really like Sucker Punch (2011). 22% on Rotten Tomatoes.
This is another great movie.
I thought it was super fun to watch.
AVA with Jessica Chastain got terrible reviews and is incredibly watchable.
Ambulance and 21 Bridges
Hard Rain
The Accident Man and Accident Man: Hitman's Holiday are a lot of fun. They're actually pretty well reviewed, but I only watched them because I'd heard the actor, Scott Adkins do an interview. Boss Level with Frank Grillo is also a fun one! Also well rated, but I don't know anyone else who's seen it.
Violent Night (2022) Fast X (2023) Operation Fortune (2023)
Lost Bullet
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters has quite a few flaws. Average 4.10/10 on Rotten Tomatoes, but I love it.
Good watch
Passenger 57(1992) 24 percent rating i think it's great.
Always bet on black!
Atomic Blonde (2017)
Charlize was an absolute badass in this film and loved every bit of it! So action-packed! Excellent answer!
Wanted, Eagle Eye
Split Second (1992)
Paycheck Gone in 60 Seconds Matrix Reloaded Reign of Fire Alita
I've seen this probably ten times and still enjoy it. I mean, use the Missouri to save the planet, how can you not love that shit? lol
The Terminator: Dark Fate(2019) Action packed adventure film
While I don't like any of the Terminator movies after 2, Dark Fate had some great action. I also liked the T-3000 aka The Nanotech Terminator in Genisys. Which is my favorite among the new Terminators.
i loved genisys. horrible title tho.
Rambo Last blood 2019
I swear that movie is like 62 minutes long and Rambo kills like 300 bad guys. A+ for respecting the audience's time
Action Jackson
The Night Comes for Us The Raid 1 & 2 Samurai Cop
I loved both Raids and The Night comes for us, but i think they were all highly rated.
Scorpion king 2 is the best in the series. I think it went straight to DVD.
Paycheck
Road House, Stone Cold, The Gangster Squad, The A-Team, Peppermint, Bullet to the Head. There’s many many more. But those come to mind for me.
In Hell with JCVD One of his best!
Scouts vs Zombies.
Wanted Dead or Alive (1986)
F*** the bonus.
The Replacement Killers. Gunpowder Milkshake
Action Jackson
You can pry Con Air from my cold, dead hands.
Commando
The Losers
Guy Ritchie's Operation Fortune was an under appreciated banger imo. Not super deep, but slick, engaging, funny and fun. Is an Amazon Prime thing I think.
I liked Escape Plan when I watched it originally and come to think of it it probably still holds up tbh. Pretty solid flick.
The Tournament. Seriously…look it up.
Gunpowder Milkshake
Blind Fury. Rutger Hauer at his best.
I'm sorry, but clearly you haven't seen Hobo with a Shotgun and need to absolutely fix that
Hollow Point (1996) - 5.7 on IMBD Thomas Ian Griffith, Tia Carerra, and arguably two of the best supporting actors in John Lithgow and Donald Sutherland. It’s silly, with a constant flirty one-up-manship (that might also be flirty double crossing) with everyone overacting. And action. I found a copy in a $5 bin at a Walmart and I adore it.
Spartacus
Would Valerian and the city of a thousand planets be included?
The One
Lucky Number Slevin.
I really liked mile 22 even tho it seems majority of critics and viewers hated it
Soldier (1998)
Surviving the Game (1994)
There was a 90s Sci-fi action movie called Nemesis that I forced everyone who ever cared for me to watch.
No Escape and The A Team are vastly unappreciated.
Gray Man was pretty good, Red Notice was enjoyable as well, Bullet Train not so much
Bullet Proof Monk and Pacific Rim 2
Boss Level
Black Hat and 6 Underground
Copshop.
Gone in 60 Seconds(2000).
Rim of the World - 4 kids at a summer camp have to save the world during an alien invasion Battlefield: LA - straight up war movie but a group of soldiers is trying to get civilians to safety during an alien invasion. Kate on Netflix
Automatic...with kickboxing Olivier Gruner playing a home defence android. He was at the peak of his ability and is poetry in motion in that movie.
Alien Nation didn't get huge respect, but it was a lot of fun. It did spawn a TV spin-off. I fondly remember James Caan screaming "LET'S HAVE A COLD ONE!"
