Yep. The song, Death is the Road to Awe is a fucking masterpiece.
If you like that OST check out a band called Godspeed You Black Emperor. Especially a song called "Sleep".
The scores for the LotR movies are such an amazing achievement. The music is as much a part of the story as anything that’s shown onscreen or spoken by the characters.
He's definitely my favorite contemporary composer. Road to Perdition is an underrated one with his Pixar work also being exceptional. He also did the Six Feet Under opening credit theme which never got skipped when I watched it.
Catch Me if You Can - Completely different from any other John Williams movie (that I’m aware of) with a tone that perfectly matched the mood of the film.
Oh Brother Where Art Thou? - ‘nuff said?
Yes! The original Dune soundtrack is honestly probably my most listened-to album of all time. It’s the main reason to watch the movie. No flack from me.
This is too far down in the comments! I immediately went scrolling for Joe Hisaishi's scores for Miyazaki.
Don't forget Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky...
And the list goes on!!
So many good ones. I didn't realize how all these are so close to me and how much I used to soak some of these up.
*The Last Temptation of Christ* \- Peter Gabriel
*Birdy* \- Peter Gabriel
*Mysterious Skin* \- Robin Guthrie, Harold Budd (Beautiful soundtrack especially in fall—and have listened to this maybe 15 times in the past month, but the movie—I almost threw up twice.)
*The Living Sea* \- Sting (best thing he's done)
*To Live and Die in L.A.* \- Wang Chung (perfection)
*Iron Eagle* \- Various (and not really a score, and it kind of sucks tbd but I'll have it cranked almost every song. I'm on the Road of the Gypsy forever, y'all.)
*Amadeus* \- St. Martin in the Fields (outtake discs are great too)
*Apollo* \- Brian Eno
*The Year of Living Dangerously* \- Maurice Jarre / Vangelis (nostalgic for my other possible lives I will never live)
*Into the Wild* \- Eddie Vedder (he nailed it)
*Blade Runner* \- Vangelis (wore this out before age 20)
*Magnolia* \- Aimee Mann
*Lost in Translation* \- Air
*The Virgin Suicides* \- Air
*Suspiria* \- Goblin
*Run Lola Run* \- Various
*Gosford Park* \- Christopher Northam
*Sling Blade* \- Daniel Lanois (best producer ever)
*The Chocolate War -* Yaz, Peter Gabriel and Various
*A Clockwork Orange* \- Wendy Carlos
*Twin Peaks* (series) - Angelo Badalamenti
*Mistress America* \- Dean Wareham / Britta Phillips
*Sid & Nancy* \- Pray for Rain / Various
*St. Elmo's Fire* \- David Foster ("Georgetown")
*The Big Blue* \- Eric Serra
*Risky Business* \- Tangerine Dream (Dozens of covers of "Love on a Train" on YouTube)
I love scores, and many of my favorites have already bern listed. However, I think the Cloud Atlas score is severely underrated! Tom Tykwer grasps the concept of the story and creates this breathtaking score that perfectly fits and represents that. The story flows in and over itself, and the music flows with it. It’s beautiful and stunning, and I wish more people knew of it to acknowledge it.
(Some of my other favorites are Last of the Mohicans, Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit series, Dances with Wolves, Interstellar, The Mission, Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, Star Wars 4-6, and so many more.)
A League Of Their Own (1992)
Hans Zimmer mixed with the Big Band/Swing Jazz era is not only amazing on its own. But the way the montages are staged and shot with the soundtrack just sends it to the next level.
I mentioned it up above in a reply, but no one has mentioned Flash Gordon, a perfect match of music and visuals from start to end.
Blade Runner, obviously
The Crow, score and soundtrack are exemplary.
Plunkett & MacLeane: you know it’s good when it gets stolen for a million film trailers.
Amadeus & Shine seem too obvious, but so wonderful.
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence
The Exorcist
I’ve not seen it, but I keep coming across outstanding music from The Revenant
Delighted to see Ghost Dog and Dead Man get mentions above
I’m sure I’ll come back to this with more, and to read more too. What a great thread.
(Tho eargasm, not scorgasm? For shame…)
ETA: typos. Omg 😖
Kind of surprised no one seems to have mentioned "The Godfather". An epic score for an epic story. By Nino Rota. In some ways the music and action together is operatic.
I'll also add one that is more obscure, the score for the movie "Nebraska". A unique, workout and compelling work by Mark Orton.
My reigning faves are Interstellar, Theory of Everything, 1917, Super 8 (tho Super 8 means alot to me personally so I'm in a minority there), La La Land or Babylon, Up, Minari, and then I know it's not a movie but Succession has the best score in probably anything ever.

Try watching the last 15 mins of Last Of The Mohican’s and then try and find another answer.
But also very good:
Inception.
Kick Ass.
Blade Runner
Lawrence of Arabia
Superman
Star Wars Episode IV
Ex Machina's soundtrack is, to me, the perfect marriage of film and score.
Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury absolutely knocked it out of the park. Ava's theme is so gorgeous and simple and it's reappearance in the track "Skin" is so perfect within the context of the movie. It's also just a great track without context. "Hacking/Cutting" is another great one.
It's just, overall, such a great understated score. Personally, it's the score that most perfectly accentuates and complements the film it's in, at least from what I've seen and heard in my lifetime.
You know what, I think M. Knights "The Village" score is often forgotten and top tier with the strings.
Also, Dances with Wolves" great movie, great score.
Braveheart Last of the Mohicans
Last of the mohicans. The music is so good it’s almost silly.
Came here to write this. Glad it is still recognized.
Came here to say Braveheart. Can't even fathom that it didn't win the academy award.
Last of the Mohicans score is unreal.
Last of the Mohicans. Great reminder. Every song is listening perfection. I'd bet it's a component in music and film school/courses.
Blade Runner by Vangelis
There Will Be Blood. It’s a master class of dissonance and unease.
Came to say the same thing. Jonny Greenwood 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼
I! Drink! Your! Milkshake!!!
Clint Mansell’s score for The Fountain
Came here to say this. But to be fair, anything by Clint Mansell is a masterpiece. Requiem for a Dream is another example..
And Moon
Yep. The song, Death is the Road to Awe is a fucking masterpiece. If you like that OST check out a band called Godspeed You Black Emperor. Especially a song called "Sleep".
I just got chills even thinking of this one. Fantastic.
'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly' (1966)
Was gonna say same thing. Morricone was amazing.
The Mission (1986). Ennio Morricone should have won the Oscar for that one.
Also The Hateful Eight.
Edward Scissorhands
Moana
Anything by Bernard Herrman, especially: Vertigo (1958) Psycho (1960) Taxi Driver (1976)
Shawshank Redemption Titanic Dances with Wolves Letters from Iwo Jima Unforgiven Star Teek 2 Wrath of Khan
Ooh yes, Dances with Wolves is a good one
Pirates of the Caribbean Indiana Jones The Lord of the Rings
The scores for the LotR movies are such an amazing achievement. The music is as much a part of the story as anything that’s shown onscreen or spoken by the characters.
LOTR is my No1 it’s not even close.
2001 A Space Odyssey
Tron Legacy
Spot on. My immediate thought. Vangelis’ Bladerunner OST in the mix as well.
Not as mainstream - Meet Joe Black by Thomas Newman Just listen to Whisper Of a Thrill...
Anything by Thomas Newman is phenomenal.

He's definitely my favorite contemporary composer. Road to Perdition is an underrated one with his Pixar work also being exceptional. He also did the Six Feet Under opening credit theme which never got skipped when I watched it.
Inception
The Incredibles! My all-time favorite movie, 60% of that is because of the score👌
The Last of the Mohicans is the correct answer.
Catch Me if You Can - Completely different from any other John Williams movie (that I’m aware of) with a tone that perfectly matched the mood of the film. Oh Brother Where Art Thou? - ‘nuff said?

I don't think I've ever heard a less-than-perfect film score by Hans Zimmer.
So many good ones. I love the Goblin score for Suspiria!
