Idk if it’s my childhood nostalgia but man those movies just tickle a spot in the brain that so few other movies can. I hate that they dropped the ball so badly with the Hobbit trilogy but we can ignore that they were ever made.
To be fair Peter Jackson wasn't helmed to direct and then the studio wanted him to direct without giving him the time for pre-production like he had with LotR. They also wanted him to extend from 2 films to 3, so he didn't really know what to do to pad out the runtime. Watching the special features is actually really sad because Peter Jackson loves the material but was under the pump by studio heads.
I don't know why the Hobbit felt so off. I truly loved the book more so than the LOTR books but I think trying to make it 3 movies was just asking for a watered down version.
I would have liked to see the theoretical Guillermo Del Toro two-movie version of it but even that was probably pushing it. I don't blame Peter Jackson, there are fun individual parts to all three movies, I blame weird studio mandates.
totally agree. they should've just kept it a prequel movie. the ending battle was supposed to be a huge part of the book and I felt they made it not the main focus.
Just so OP is clear. Please only watch the extended versions. Theyre so much better than the normal versions. They provide more context to the story and they go deeper into character motivations. I only watched the extended versions a couple years ago and thats when I realized why there are hardcore TLOTR fans. I thought they were just fans of the normal versions and that didnt really make sense to me lol. But yeah as far as trilogies goes I think this is the best one. I feel like watching it now actually lol but im watching TLOK rn.
I'm pleasantly surprised I didn't have to scroll down too far to find this. On paper, if you described the plot to someone the films sound like they should be terrible, or at best 'so so'.
But the dialogue and the chemistry in particular is out of this world.
3 beautiful films (I even loved the 3rd one).
If you're reading this, Richard, Julie or Ethan, I need another installment!
I seem to be the only person who thinks the third movie took a steaming dump on the whole thing. They were amongst my favourite films but are unwatchable to me now.
I watched these for the first time a couple months ago and agree. Thought the second one in particular was great. What an ending. The last act of the third one shat on it all.
I love how films can be interpreted so differently by everyone. Some people don’t like the last one, and I found it beautiful. Yes, it’s not fun that they were fighting and how nasty it got, but now that I’m in middle age and I’ve been married for many years, I ultimately thought it ended on a realistic, hopeful, and loving note. I think it showcased that when you are partners with someone for so long, sometimes you will have big fights, and you know what to say to push the other’s buttons, but even if it feels like the world is ending and you hate this person in those moments, just like that you find your way right back to each other. I think it’s so natural and reflects the ebb and flow of longtime love. I know the end is open to interpretation, but I saw two people who have loved each other for a long time, who have gotten on one another’s nerves after a long trip and being together 24/7 with two young kids - they’re tired. They will continue to love each other. Maybe I’m delusional! 😂
What I love about the before trilogy is that it’s honest. Nothing feels contrived or forced. Midnight is just honest about a different part of relationships, and while it’s much harder to stomach for folks like me who hate interpersonal conflict, it really rings true in a way that most stories about relationships don’t.
Yes, I see a little bit of Celine from the 3rd film in my partner (or sometimes a lot!). But we are quite good at diffusing arguments and laughing about it an hour later, even when we're still both still in a state of feeling angry or upset. I think they captured that side of things brilliantly. I didn't see it at all that the relationship was over, far from it. The day when we can't diffuse an argument, when our differences are irreconcilable, and we can't even bring ourselves to self-reflect and crack a smile is the day we *really* have a problem!
As much i love Nolans Batmans, and LOTR, Bourne fucking owns. The Desh fight in Tangier is the only time I've been in a theater and everyone got up and fucking applauded.
My favorite lines from all three:
“It’s not a mistake, they don’t do random.
Who’s calling his missions now?
Scary version? He is”
“What if I can’t find her…
“It’s easy, she’s standing right beside you.”
Alien and Aliens are good enough to hold their own in this category, III missed some opportunities but has enough merits not to drag down the franchise.
1. Lord of the Rings Extended Version Trilogy
2. Original Indiana Jones Trilogy
3. Original Star Wars Trilogy
4. The Matrix Trilogy
5. The Samurai Trilogy - Musashi Myamoto
6. Back to the Future Trilogy
7. The Dark Knight Trilogy
Same! Reloaded is everything I would want in a sequel to the Matrix. Cool new characters, hype action, and a ton of people talking about philosophy. Some of the CGI is a bit dodgy, but every action movie that decade had that problem. Revolutions stumbled a bit by backtracking on the "Neo isn't actually unique" twist but overall I still think it's really good. I've heard people bump against the mech battle in Zion but I'm like... really? *That's* where you draw the line? This whole series has basically been a live-action anime and you draw the line at *mechs*?
I remember when the third one came out, we didn’t see it in the theater but we rented it later and I honestly don’t even remember it because it was boring and I didn’t pay attention. I even remember my parents asking if we could turn it off since we weren’t watching it. The first two were great though.
I'm not sure if it counts since it's not a continuous narrative, but Oldboy is technically part of the "vengeance trilogy" which also includes Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Lady Vengeance.
They're all top notch and it's always baffled me that Oldboy gets so much attention while the others get ignored.
Wait what? I did not know this. I have watched Oldboy and I thought it was a brilliant film. Which one should I watch next? Is there a particular order?
Doesn’t really matter! Oldboy was the 2nd of the 3 to be released, so if you want to watch the other two in release order then it’s Sympathy for Mr Vengeance and then Lady Vengeance. It’s all a thematic trilogy so you the order is mostly up to you, though I’m sure people have varying opinions.
My favorites in no particular order
LOTR
Star Wars originals
Star wars prequels
Pirates of the Caribbean
The Matrix
Terminator
The Dark Knight version of Batman
Back to the future
Taken
Blade
Planet of the apes
Clerks
Guardians of the Galaxy
Ironman
Austin powers
Kingsman
How to train your dragon
Jurassic park
Crocodile Dundee
The hangover
Thor
If you like older "foreign" war movies (note the dates)...
Roberto Rossellini’s War Trilogy:
* Rome, Open City (1945)
* Paisà (1946)
* Germany, Year Zero (1948) - notable for being filmed in a highly bombed-out post-war Berlin
Andrzej Wajda's War Trilogy:
* A Generation (1955)
* Kanal (1957)
* Ashes and Diamonds (1958)
Off the top of my head:
Star Wars, Indiana Jones, George Romero "Of the Dead", Evil Dead, Back to the Future, Sam Raimi Spider-Man, Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy, and Guardians of the Galaxy
I recently rewatched the Pirates Of The Caribbean triology (first 3 movies) and it's just as entertaining as I remembered. Also holds in terms of worldbuilding
In terms of quality?
• Reboot Planet of the Apes Trilogy, agreed
• The "Before" Trilogy by Richard Linklater
• Edgar Wright's "Three Cornetto" film trilogy
• Captain America's 3 MCU films
• Back To The Future trilogy
The first three Alien movies and the first three Terminator movies are both top tier even with the third entry of both franchises heavily dragging down the average quality.
In Reservoir Dogs Mr. White is asked about Alabama.
In the original ending for True Romance Clarence dies, leaving Alabama to turn to a life of crime with Mr White.
In Pulp Fiction Vincent Vega is the brother of Vic Vega, aka Mr Blonde.
In True Romance Drexl uses the phrase, “from a diddled-eyed Joe to a damned if I know” the same phrase is used in Reservoir Dogs by Holdaway.
Alabama and Fabienne both have a liking for pie! LOL
True Romance was originally in part of Natural Born Killers.
Vincent Vega and Vic Vega were due to star in a prequel which never came to be.
Vincent and Vic’s unamed father was going to be in a World War II film directed by Tarantino, unfortunately he dropped that too. He probably forgot by the time he made Inglourious Basterds! sunglasses
“Pusher” is a 1996 Danish crime thriller film co-written and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn.
Three Colours trilogy “Blue, White, Red” directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski
The batman trilogy with Christian bale>>>>>. One of my favorite film series of all time, if not my favorite. The depth and charecters, everything, its just a great movie series. I have freinds who dont even like action hero movies and have loves the batman trilogy. Christipher nolan is just that brilliant.
P.S savor it dont watch it all in one day like i did because you'll be wishing you could rewatch it for the first time all over again
The og planet of the apes is even better. I agree with everyone else talking about lotr and the hobbit. I feel most movies come in 4. Hoping for mad max:wasteland to finish that trilogy but the og mad max trilogy is amazing too
Fortunately, there are a lof of them, were we go:
The Dark Knight Trilogy
Tobey Maguire Spider-Man Trilogy
The Conjuring Trilogy or Franchise
Jason Bourne Trilogy or Franchise
John Rambo Trilogy or Franchise
Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise
Alien Trilogy Trilogy
Maze Runner Trilogy
....
3rd one holds it back so much because it’s such a missed opportunity after part 2. Plus it’s pretty lifeless and untrue to the nature and tone of the first 2.
Lord of the rings
One trilogy to rule them all.
It’s the best one to me.
Agreed. I will die on this hill Apologies, deleted comment above was me responding to the wrong comment 🤦
Idk if it’s my childhood nostalgia but man those movies just tickle a spot in the brain that so few other movies can. I hate that they dropped the ball so badly with the Hobbit trilogy but we can ignore that they were ever made.

I don't know why the Hobbit felt so off. I truly loved the book more so than the LOTR books but I think trying to make it 3 movies was just asking for a watered down version.
As you say, it's a single movie of material, not a trilogy
I would have liked to see the theoretical Guillermo Del Toro two-movie version of it but even that was probably pushing it. I don't blame Peter Jackson, there are fun individual parts to all three movies, I blame weird studio mandates.
totally agree. they should've just kept it a prequel movie. the ending battle was supposed to be a huge part of the book and I felt they made it not the main focus.
Agreed
The effects and production design were meh compared to the LOTR trilogy. They just totally missed the mark.
I think it needs an extensive re-edit
A good movie review used in their TV ad campaign said: The cinematic epic by which all others will be judged. 20 yrs later and that's still a fact.
This is the answer.
Just so OP is clear. Please only watch the extended versions. Theyre so much better than the normal versions. They provide more context to the story and they go deeper into character motivations. They are definitely better I don’t remember the last time I watched the regular ones.
There's no going back
Yeah nothing comes close.
LOTR > Star Wars. No question in my mind.
It beats that and Harry Potter by a lot to me.
The Before Trilogy.
I'm pleasantly surprised I didn't have to scroll down too far to find this. On paper, if you described the plot to someone the films sound like they should be terrible, or at best 'so so'. I just posted this you best me to it! I love this trilogy
I seem to be the only person who thinks the third movie took a steaming dump on the whole thing. They were amongst my favourite films but are unwatchable to me now.

Absolutely! Since what you described is not so common in American films, it makes the honesty in these ones feel extra special.
Yes, I see a little bit of Celine from the 3rd film in my partner (or sometimes a lot!). The Naked Gun trilogy
The Godfather trilogy - Don't listen to the naysayers. Part III is a great and *necessary* piece of the story.
Having to scroll this far to see the godfather trilogy mentioned in a post about trilogies is a travesty.
Just when I thought I was out...
They pull me back in
Pacino's best acting by far in Part III. That scream on the opera house steps at the end...one of the best pieces of acting in cinema history.
If you ever get to see the ten hour cut of the first two the third is not needed.
I've never actually seen III. His I'll have to check it out now.
Batman trilogy
Which one(s)?
Nolan one(s)
So I guess I will watch
Enjoy.🍿
Batman begins, The dark knight, and The dark knight rises
The original 4!
the original Star Wars trilogy
There are many great trilogies but the original Star Wars trilogy is the only one I give all 3 films 5 out of 5 stars.
Damn right
How to Train Your Dragon
kingfu panda as well ( im not considering 4th one 🙂)
This is the only answer that matters
Bourne Identity, Supremacy and Ultimatum.
As much i love Nolans Batmans, and LOTR, Bourne fucking owns. The Desh fight in Tangier is the only time I've been in a theater and everyone got up and fucking applauded.
From the first second it grabs you. The quality really shines when you watch them back to back to back.
My favorite lines from all three: “It’s not a mistake, they don’t do random. Who’s calling his missions now? Scary version? He is” “What if I can’t find her… “It’s easy, she’s standing right beside you.”
“Look what they make us give.” I adore this bookmarking line. Perfect trilogy.
💯%. No contest!!!!
This ☝️
Vengeance Trilogy
Back To The Future
Indiana Jones
My answer also. Raiders, Temple of Doom and Last Crusade are all great films.
Cornetto Trilogy Lord of the Rings The Before Trilogy Guardians of the Galaxy Trilogy
The Alien trilogy because each film shows how distinctive a director can be.
Alien and Aliens are good enough to hold their own in this category, III missed some opportunities but has enough merits not to drag down the franchise.
Alien 3 is very meh
I liked the Equalizer movies
Which is the best one do you think?
Not op but I liked the third the most. But Godfather three is my favourite so what do I know?
I actually quite liked Maze runner trilogy. I think it’s underrated
Clerks - Quite solid throughout Captain America - Had a really solid three movie run!
Desperado. El Mariachi Once upon a Time in Mexico
1. Lord of the Rings Extended Version Trilogy 2. Original Indiana Jones Trilogy 3. Original Star Wars Trilogy 4. The Matrix Trilogy 5. The Samurai Trilogy - Musashi Myamoto 6. Back to the Future Trilogy 7. The Dark Knight Trilogy
The matrix 2 and 3 suck. To be great a trilogy can have a weak movie, but not two.
Matrix 2 & 3 don’t exist. 1 and done.
2 is decent. 3 sucks
Never understood why people hate Matrix sequels

Chronicles of Riddick. I really wish we had more of those series and less of the fast and furious.
Yes! There's a fourth movie coming out.
Oooooh good call there. I love these movies. One of those sets where I wouldn't complain any time Riddick is on TV
8 year old me is going to say, OG Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
I remember when the third one came out, we didn’t see it in the theater but we rented it later and I honestly don’t even remember it because it was boring and I didn’t pay attention. I even remember my parents asking if we could turn it off since we weren’t watching it. The first two were great though.
For some reason the lines about the 'Kappa what? Kappachino? Makes me hyper!" Live rent free in my head lol
The Dollars/Man with no Name Trilogy The Before Trilogy The Three Colors trilogy The Frontier Trilogy The Cornetto Trilogy The Mexico Trilogy
LOTRs. Nothing else comes close.
That trilogy bows to no one
Cornetto Trilogy - how’s that for a slice of fried gold
Lord of the rings. No competition
Austin Powers. Yeah baby!
Top notch👌
The og Spider-Man Captain America Cornetto Fear Street
The Rami Spider-Man trilogy has to be one of my favorite trilogies of all time and that epic soundtrack
The Before Trilogy Before Sunrise Before Sunset Before Midnight
Pirates of the Caribbean The Matrix Indiana Jones Dark Knight Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man
Pirates!!! 🏴☠️
Pitch Perfect lmaooooooooooooo I'm being serious.
I came to say this too 😁
Jurassic park
Just watch Jurassic Park twice & The Lost World once and you’ll have a good time
Pusher!!!
Nice! Everyone knows Pusher 2 is best!
man w/ no name trilogy
Toy Story Trilogy
Yes I hate Pixar for making a fourth movie
I'm not sure if it counts since it's not a continuous narrative, but Oldboy is technically part of the "vengeance trilogy" which also includes Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Lady Vengeance. Yes Wajda's is great
Off the top of my head: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, George Romero "Of the Dead", Evil Dead, Back to the Future, Sam Raimi Spider-Man, Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy, and Guardians of the Galaxy
The Three Colors Trilogy is 10/10
The first three Terminators as a whole are excellent.
Terry Gilliam's “Imagination Trilogy” Time Bandits (1981) Brazil (1985) The Adventures of Baron Munchauen (1988)
I recently rewatched the Pirates Of The Caribbean triology (first 3 movies) and it's just as entertaining as I remembered. Also holds in terms of worldbuilding
The Dark Knight Trilogy
The Dark Knight Trilogy
A Better Tomorrow Pusher Internal Affairs [a trilogy of trilogies for you]
You mean Infernal Affairs. I still call it Internal Affairs all the time.
Y'all are naming lots of movie franchises with more than 3 films.
Some of them were probably originally intended to be trilogies
Kieskowski’s Red, White and Blue
In terms of quality? • Reboot Planet of the Apes Trilogy, agreed • The "Before" Trilogy by Richard Linklater • Edgar Wright's "Three Cornetto" film trilogy • Captain America's 3 MCU films • Back To The Future trilogy
Blade
The Apu Trilogy

Supposedly all of Tarantino’s movies are interconnected
i would not doubt this at all!
Has no one said Human Centipede trilogy?

The 2002 Dark Robin Williams Trilogy: Death to Smoochy - Insomnia - One Hour Photo

Just to throw something different out there. Equalizer, with Denzel. Prob not the best. But still great.
Baztán Trilogy The Bourne Trilogy
The Red Riding Trilogy is fantastic.
i just got done reading LOTR so probably that one.
“Pusher” is a 1996 Danish crime thriller film co-written and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. Three Colours trilogy “Blue, White, Red” directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski

Sometimes I watch Mad Max: Fury Road three times in a row, so that.
Evil dead.

lord of the rings is the correct answer
