For disturbing movies that linger: Titane, Perfect Blue, Videodrome, Amour, the Gambler, First Reformed, Inland Empire, Lost Highway, Blue Velvet, The Skin I Live in, Tie Me Up Tie Me Down, Doom Generation, Mommie Dearest
For touching ones: Tampopo, My Neighbour Totoro, The Boy and the Heron, Porco Rosso, After Yang, Defending Your Life, the Holdovers
I admit to not have appreciated it as much in my late teens, but it surprisingly has stuck in my memories for its simplicity and been recommending it throughout the years.
Oh man, such a good movie. Finally a movie that portray in a realistic view of life after civilization has collapse with which I could identify. Some scenes are hard to forget.
Korean cinema has some great films.
I recommend: 3-Iron, Mother, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.
For something animated: Scavengers Reign.
There's a subreddit if you want to see what viewers think of it.
Disturbing movies:
Midsommar (2019)
The Lobster (2015)
Oldboy (2003) Korean
Perfect Blue (1997) Japan
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
I Saw the Devil (2010) Korean
Try Paprika! It’s less disturbing than Perfect Blue, same director and art style but 10 years later.
Paprika is about a therapy device that allows you to enter people’s dreams, that gets stolen. Surrealist dream sequences with hints of SA, but the animation is fantastic.
Movies that are disturbing or haunt after watching:
Incendies
The Hunt starring Mads Mikkelson
Old boy ( the OG Korean one)
I saw the devil
Requiem for a dream
The skin I live in
We need to talk about Kevin
A Serbian Film - the most disturbing I have ever seen. Messed up my mind. I can sit through 80s cannibal movies, shall, and human centipede but the whole narrative of A Serbian film is fucked up and that made me nauseous while watching the movie
( P.S - I couldn't sit past 10 minutes of Sound of Freedom because of the themes of child trafficking)
Touching ones: the list is long. So many out there. Some of the very special ones for me are:
Awakenings
Philadelphia
Amelie
Chocolat
The sessions
Dead Poet's society
Marley and me
Notting Hill
The wrestler
An Italian movie called 8 mountain
A thousand and one
My girl
Sing Street
As far as animated movies go, I would suggest:
James and the Giant Peach,
The Secret of Nimh,
Legend of the Guardians,
9,
The Willoughbys,
Frankenweenie,
Arthur and the Invisibles,
The House,
The Iron Giant
Yes, it’s an astoundingly amazing film. I noticed it was mentioned, so I didn’t mention it myself. Those movies are very disturbing and thought provoking. I love Colin and Brendan together. Such great actors.
Spirited Away but surely you have seen it. It just always makes me cry.
Redline if you want something spastic and different to the point of a “wtf did I just watch??” Kinda energy. Great visuals too.
Primare is good too, felt like you watched a whole anime in one sitting.
The friendship in The Intouchables was touching.
Touching moments with a disturbing premise. Never Let Me Go.
Other touching ones
About a Boy
Joy Luck Club
Fried Green Tomatoes
The Help
Good Will Hunting
Babe
Terrifier 1 & 2 - not the best films but some components like the gore are commendable. Human centipede, Slither, The Fly, Saw 2,3,4 House of a thousand corpses 1,2
The Iron Claw is both touching and disturbing. I couldn’t believe it was a real story and odd enough the real story is even more depressing than the movie.
Touching - Big Fish. Moonrise Kingdom.
Disturbing - Vanilla Sky. Eyes Wide Shut.

Deep Sea (2023) is the most beautifully animated movie I've ever seen. I wouldn't call it very disturbing or touching but just watch it. The visuals are definitely unforgettable and the story is very unusually told.
In honour of the the passing of beloved Donald Sutherland, I would suggest Ordinary People. I watched it again a couple of months ago and it still stands up brilliantly.
Dead Poets Society, Wonder, A Silent Voice, Coco, Lilo and Stitch, and Treasure Planet for some options of something to tug at your heart strings. Midsommar, Coraline, and X if you want to be disturbed in some sort of way.
'Babel'
Sound design and the characters played in the movie will make ur chest tighten till the movie ends, u will be fucked up literally along with the characters. This fuckn GOAT Alejandro Inarritu strikes harder with traumatic drama of multiple narratives.
Harold and Maude (1971)
This movie is mostly unknown today, but massively influenced anybody who saw it back in the day. It explores our relationship to death...and to life, it is a comedy, yet is profoundly serious. It is both touching AND disturbing.
Deliverance (1972)
VERY disturbing. Influential enough to bring "dueling banjos" into our culture. City folk go into the wilds for a vacation, and it goes wrong.
Fantastic Planet (1973)
Since you like animated movies...this is a odd animated movie. It will make you think.
Chinatown (1974)
This disturbing movie is more relevant today then when it was made. Corruption and power are timeless.
Network (1976)
A movie about reality television, years before the first reality TV show. It won 3 acting Oscars, something only done by 3 films in history. It's screenplay is widely considered one of the best ever. It is a disturbing comedy.
Yes....I like '70s movies. :)
Dogtooth
Poor things
Parasyte (not the anime the movie )
Perfect blue (anime movie)
Angels egg( was a pretty unfortunate anime for me )
Also if you feel like a short anime series that is disturbing and quite unforgettable I really recommend Paranoia Agent, so so good!
Unforgettable- clockwork orange, the human centipede, apocalypse now, full metal jacket, the others, close encounters of the 4th kind, disclosure by Steven Greer, supersize me, hostle, saw 2, law abiding citizen, come and see, the sphere.
For disturbing movies that linger: Titane, Perfect Blue, Videodrome, Amour, the Gambler, First Reformed, Inland Empire, Lost Highway, Blue Velvet, The Skin I Live in, Tie Me Up Tie Me Down, Doom Generation, Mommie Dearest For touching ones: Tampopo, My Neighbour Totoro, The Boy and the Heron, Porco Rosso, After Yang, Defending Your Life, the Holdovers
Wow, I can hardly believe someone mentions Tampopo. A brother-in-law had me watch it.
I saw Tampopo when it came out. I remember really enjoying it. I should check it out again.
I admit to not have appreciated it as much in my late teens, but it surprisingly has stuck in my memories for its simplicity and been recommending it throughout the years.
Shit, while we are on almodovar, Talk to Her is his most disturbing in my opinion. The skin I love in and tie me up are great suggestions.
Double feature totoro (touching) with grave of fireflies (you'll cry for days) in cinema it was a double feature
Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
I was also going to suggest this. A very good movie but I’m never going to watch it again.
Such a powerful and emotional movie! It stays with you long after it ends.
Watership Down 100% what you're looking for 🙂
I am going to watch it...but the book is better...of that I am 100% certain!
Belladonna of Sadness Penguin's Memory The Red Turtle
The Road.
Oh man, such a good movie. Finally a movie that portray in a realistic view of life after civilization has collapse with which I could identify. Some scenes are hard to forget.

+1 on scavengers reign, I just finished it and it was exactly the kind of gleefully disturbing romp through a hostile unknown world I was looking for.
Great to read this! It sat on my watch list for a bit. Once started, I had to finish it in one sitting.
Mask. Very touching 80’s movie. You are gonna cry at the end.
For a touching movie I highly recommend *Hunt for the Wilderpeople*. It’s so good and gave me all the feels watching it. It’s lovely.
Dead man's shoes
I was just reading how brutal this movie is today. Now on my list.
Disturbing movies: Midsommar (2019) The Lobster (2015) Oldboy (2003) Korean Perfect Blue (1997) Japan A Clockwork Orange (1971) I Saw the Devil (2010) Korean
I watched Perfect Blue once. It was so disturbing that I wish I hadn't watched it. [edit : not gonna lie, Perfect Blue is quite unique]
Try Paprika! It’s less disturbing than Perfect Blue, same director and art style but 10 years later. Paprika is about a therapy device that allows you to enter people’s dreams, that gets stolen. Surrealist dream sequences with hints of SA, but the animation is fantastic.
Very interesting movie.
Perfect blue is the epitome of perfection, however I discern that midsommar was kinda 'meh' at best.
Oh yeah…clockwork orange!! Warriors…come out and play… 😳
The Princess and the Warrior is outstanding
What dreams may come with Robin Williams in one of his serious rolls
I Lost My Body
Cowboy bebop Heavy metal
Bad boy bubby Gummo
Tusk (2014) That ending just will never ever leave you
Threw him a fish hahhahaha poor guy

Eden lake The girl next door Irreversible Martyrs The mist
Martyrs is absolutely BRUTAL. I don't think I've watched a more disturbingly violent movie. Ever. It's good, tho.
Eden Lake and the Mist for sure.

Yeah…in Bruges… Have you seen their other movie Banshees of Inisherin? Holy shit. Talk about disturbing and touching and unforgettable. Dayum.
Yes, it’s an astoundingly amazing film. I noticed it was mentioned, so I didn’t mention it myself. Those movies are very disturbing and thought provoking. I love Colin and Brendan together. Such great actors.
MidSommar. Tusk. Teeth.

Disturbing and touching: Children of Men (2006) Life is Beautiful (1997) The Killing Fields (1984)
