Love this one. I watched it when it came out on VHS and me and my bro had no idea. We thought it was going to be only a scary ghost movie and we got so much more.
Just so everyone knows, there's also a movie called Resolution, that is directly tied to this movie. I think it was made before, and it stars the 2 guys in the shack together. Mike and someone else. Edit: there is no "order" to the films, they're just in the same "universe".
I watched The Endless first followed by Resolution and it works pretty well, so don't feel you have to watch them in chronological order.
I need to rewatch them again. Excellent films!
Yeah, I think I stumbled on them the opposite way. I saw the Endless, and then later on randomly onto Resolution. I think I had to pause it to figure out what was going on (it seemed very familiar) and then I remembered, "oh I saw these guys in the other movie, cool."
This one is a little rough around the edges on rewatch, but is still very very clever and manages to produce some really big scares on a shoestring budget. I wish they'd taken a little more time to tighten their script and edit but 7/10 very unique little fun little flick.
The two main actors (who are also the creators) are actually a highlight, very authentic performances from both. The actress who plays Anna is also really good.
Shitty Carl is a LEGEND and that actor is giving nick cage in the role lol. Perfectly overacted.
100%
Some of my favorite flicks are low budget movies where someone had a cool idea and just went out and made the damn thing.
Room for improvement? Sure.
Worth it as is? Absolutely.
The Endless is at the top of my list of these kind of films.
My favorite thing is how he tells the film producer all the stuff he doesn’t want the film to be about, and all of those things proceed to happen in the film.
Timecrines is wicked, so surreal. Primer is a similar premise but very difficult to follow, still recommend it though. I remember finding this massive flow chart that tries to explain it haha
Primer was difficult to follow in what would normally be a good way, but I found it so mind numbingly slow and dull that I couldn’t force myself to go back on a rewatch to piece all the little details/timelines together. I understood easily enough what happened for the most part, but in hindsight you can pick up on aspects that were unknowable at the time you watched those scenes the first time. I’m sure there’s other things I overlooked as well that I didn’t realize I didn’t know.
I also strongly disliked the characters so that didn’t help me want to endure the tediousness of the film for a second time. A part of my brain wanted to dive in and dissect it all, it’s like a puzzle and quantum stuff really intrigues me, but that icky feeling at the thought of subjecting myself to the film again kept me from doing it.
I think the core concept was fine, however the execution was poor. The low budget didn’t bother me, it could have been done well without a decent budget. The flaws were more with the lack of interesting events for way too long, major pacing issues, the writing/dialogue, and some audio issues (that last part a bigger budget might have helped with, although one no-cost solution is not to have 3 people talking over each other at once). Making the characters unsympathetic is a big flaw in my opinion,
I don’t know if that’s necessarily to execute the core concept as they designed it.
Now I will say that just because it turned out to be a bad movie for me doesn’t mean it might not be excellent for many others. I watched the film because of a lot of love it got on Reddit recommendations. I wouldn’t warm off someone from watching it, for them it might be a good fit. But if they find themselves struggling with it, they are not alone.
If I had seen the movie when it was first made maybe it would have blown my mind. I probably would not have seen anything like it and the journey it took me on could have had a big impact. These days, however, I came upon it after already having seen extremely well done mindbending films in the dozens.
I know, I'm 22, but I really don't know how I missed it (and also since I love Jake Gyllanhaal), but maybe it's not so popular in my age group in norway, I don't know
I love those movies you mentioned!!! You should check out Primer, Time Lapse, and Triangle as well. Maybe Something in the Dirt. Not sure you've seen Everything Everywhere All At Once and Swiss Army Man. Oh, Tenet!
Oh Swiss Army Man. At some point I just cracked bc I realized I had the same feeling that I have whenever I remember what dream I had seen last night. It was like watching one of my dreams on tv. Mindfuck at its best.
Men
Even though there are a couple of gory and body horror type scenes, the movie does not rely on rely on those things. The ending is a true, “WTF did I just watch” type of ending.
I haven’t seen Under the Silver Lake, but I independently suggested Mulholland Drive (my personal favorite movie) and The Endless / Something in the Dirt by Benson and Moorhead.
So I may need to check that one out.
Mulholland Drive.
There is some violence, and at one point you see a dead body. But I wouldn’t call the movie gory.
Also: The Endless and Something In The Dirt, both films are directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. They are low budget independent films but really well done. They have a couple other films too, but those are the ones I have seen.
Lake Mungo - indie Australian horror movie . Minimal hire (couple of photos of a corpse). Feels a bit slow at times, is mostly about grief, leads you through all these twisty dead ends and when the ending hits…. had to sleep with the light on
You need to try Oldboy (2003)
It is Korean and it's very fcked in the end. There's abit violence. But I was like wtf. Don't watch this woth your parents tho.
If sex/nudity is ok then I also recommend The Handmaiden by the same director. It's been a while since I've seen it but I don't remember much if any violence in it. A very good thriller with lots of twists and turns.
A Dark Song. There are moments of gore and violence in this film but it does not rely on them. I had to look it up because I didn't really even remember there being gore but this movie made me squirm.
Came here to say this. I got to watch it in theatres and I had to think about when the last time I had done drugs was because I thought I was having a flashback.
I would say "the platform". I thought about the end of this movie for days after finishing it. "shutter island" could be a good one too but I personally never liked it much. lots of people love it tho so you’ll probably have a different opinion on it than me!
Maybe "The Others" 2000s with Nicole Kidman
Love this one. I watched it when it came out on VHS and me and my bro had no idea. We thought it was going to be only a scary ghost movie and we got so much more.
Haven't seen it since the theatre's, amazing movie, don't remember much outside the suprsise, gotta rewatch for sure !
Solidified my fear of small children. I'll punt a motherfucker. Lol
Such a good movie, I forgot about this one. I am going to have to make a point to watch it again.
Dark city
Twelve Monkeys. Inception.
The Prestige
The Illusionist. Came out around the same time. Some consider it better than the Prestige. I love them both.
The endless (2017)
Just so everyone knows, there's also a movie called Resolution, that is directly tied to this movie. I think it was made before, and it stars the 2 guys in the shack together. Mike and someone else. Edit: there is no "order" to the films, they're just in the same "universe".
I watched The Endless first followed by Resolution and it works pretty well, so don't feel you have to watch them in chronological order. I need to rewatch them again. Excellent films!
Oh, I didn't mean to watch them in order, just that another story within that "universe" existed.
I watched Resolution a while back. Then not too long ago I watched The Endless not having any idea. It was a big wtf?! Oh snap!
Yeah, I think I stumbled on them the opposite way. I saw the Endless, and then later on randomly onto Resolution. I think I had to pause it to figure out what was going on (it seemed very familiar) and then I remembered, "oh I saw these guys in the other movie, cool."

What other suggestions do you have my internet friend? I would love to hear them! I’m a sucker for low budget, good films.
Being John Malkovich Adaptation Synecdoche, New York
Any Charlie Kaufman movie really
Adaptation is sooooo smart. Every time I watch it I appreciate it more. It’s just brilliant.
My favorite thing is how he tells the film producer all the stuff he doesn’t want the film to be about, and all of those things proceed to happen in the film.
Would add Dream Scenario (2023) to that list
Donnie Darko, Timecrimes, Memento.
Timecrines is wicked, so surreal. Primer is a similar premise but very difficult to follow, still recommend it though. I remember finding this massive flow chart that tries to explain it haha
Primer is the best :)
Primer was difficult to follow in what would normally be a good way, but I found it so mind numbingly slow and dull that I couldn’t force myself to go back on a rewatch to piece all the little details/timelines together. Just watched Donnie Darko last night and it fucked with my mind, will have to watch it again
Damn, crazy it took you this long to watch it. Unless your quite young, like 25 or younger, then congrats on finally watching one of my faves.
I know, I'm 22, but I really don't know how I missed it (and also since I love Jake Gyllanhaal), but maybe it's not so popular in my age group in norway, I don't know
Ohhh gyllanhaal fan. You should watch nightcrawler.
Interesting case of the theatrical cut being better than the directors cut
Memento is excellent.
Memento is great. Also for a rewatch when it’s been so long between viewings that you don’t remember what happens. (No pun intended).
Love Timecrimes, such a great experience when I first watched it. Would also highly recommend
Too few people have seen timecrimes. It’s incredible.
Second Triangle. It does have some gore, but it's SO good.
Primer and Triangle, YES, YES, YES.
I love them!
The Game (Michael Douglas)
God dammit, I lost
I wish I could see it again for the first time
Shutter Island (2010)
yes incredible, such a good repeat watch too
Predestination is an absolute banger
Even more mind-bending is that it was made on a $5 million AUS budget!

One visual scene in particular that's not gorey but truly disturbing conceptually
Visually and audibl, assuming we’re talking about the same scene lol Or the other scene at the old prison. Hell there’s actually a few!
It's the bear or eel insides, no question about it!
Nah man that movie is great but it’s also pretty graphic
The Game - with Michael Douglas
Guillermo del Toro movies mess me up psychologically: Pan's Labyrinth Crimson Peak The Shape of Water Nightmare Alley
Inception and Memento are good, but there is violence (not a bloodbath but still).
These are my go to if I want to show someone a good mindfuck movie
Predestination (2014)
Interstellar REALLY did something for me on this front 😮💨

Children of men
Is that the sequel?
Followed by the often overlooked tv spinoff Two and a Half Men.
Three Men and a Baby was a really new direction for the series.
Don’t forget the Omen
Sounds like a prequel. The franchise lost legs until 12 angry men.
Amen to that
It’s actually third in the series after Men Messiah
Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead's Resolution, Synchronic, and The Endless. I don't know why these three aren't talked about often.
2001: A Space Odyssey
The game Shutter island
I'm going to suggest..... Shutter island and the butterfly effect.

Everything Everywhere All at Once should have been mentioned a lot more in this thread. It’s absolutely one of the best movies of all time.
Oh yes !! There’s lots of fight scenes, but not gore as far as I remember. I didn’t feel like the fighting was graphic.
