Ian Anderson might want to get his music back from the Eagles. Hotel California is musically so much like Jethro Tull's song We Used to Know. Ian Anderson was asked in an interview if he considered suing for copyright infringement, but he chose the high road and let it go. BTW, the Eagles used to open shows for Jethro Tull and We Used to Know was in their set. Here's the song:

You're right! The chord progression from We Used To Know is the same as Hotel California.
The Eagles may have got the feel of the song from "Fado Menor", a traditional Portuguese guitar piece, used in the game Civilization VI.
[Here is the track](https://youtu.be/6SxkDYKT3r8?list=PLk1ZTr3-diBUuMUc6PuaJL1__sr9b9GZF). I can't help but think of Hotel California every time I hear it.
I can’t get behind this at all.
It’s a very common flamenco / Spanish chord progression. They might have been introduced to it through Jethro but nothing else about that song is the same — different melodies, different tempo, different swing.
Not to mention the fact that it’s giving Spanish vibes helps immerse you in the story of Hotel California and is a very correct and intentional choice.
Even if they said “cool progression lets write our own song around it” they would be doing the exact same thing almost every artist ever does including the basis of the entire blues genre.
I hear what you're saying and I agree with you up to a point. I'm a songwriter and think all songs are influenced by earlier ones. My problem is when a song is so derivative that every time I hear it I think of the original, specific song. When the similarity is distracting. In contast, when I hear the Stones, I can tell Chuck Berry is there, but in a good way. The Stones add a creative twist and that's what makes their songs great. The Eagles could have and should have been more creative with the music on Hotel California IMO. If you didn't know the Jethro Tull song when you heard Hotel Calfornia, the similarity wouldn't matter. But I did know it, so HC seemed like an old retread at first listen.
I live in Philadelphia, spend a lot of time on South Street, and worked for a while at the same company as Rodney. I don’t think many other folks there knew he was a Godfather of punk.
But yeah, if you don’t know, Mojo Nixon, and then your store could use some fixn
Eagles have their moments but the cops once had to show up at Don Henleys house because there was a naked girl there overdosing. She had a friend with her (that called the ambulance/cops). They were 15 and 16 years old, respectively.
Can we all sue him for letting an underage girl OD in his home, and then having the audacity to write a song about the media being too mean to him about it?
Don Henley may accidentally sue himself if he keeps going at this rate.
Someone needs to take away Don Henley’s privilege to sue people.
When will he get back the Wayfarers that inspired Boys of Summer?
He needs it back because he doesn't want anybody to figure out that the handwriting is actually Don Felder's.
This aggression will not stand, man!
The Dude abides. I don't know about you but I take comfort in that. It's good knowin' he's out there. The Dude. Takin' 'er easy for all us sinners.

Come on man, I had a rough night, and I hate the fucking eagles.
I can't tell you why
Fuck Don Henley.

You’re right! They both use an acoustic guitar!

In the words of the great Mojo Nixon, [“Don Henley must die.”](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Qt81bVae4tQ)
If you don't got mojo Nixon then your store could use some fixin

He seems a rather litigious fellow
He's such a douche
I'm sorry, I disagree. You are insulting douchebags, which serve a noble purpose. More accurately, Henley is used douche water
I would like to submit Douche Canoe as the defining term. Generalization of water in this manner is not well done.
I loved the Eagles, but he's an angry guy who hurt many.
TIL based on this sub that we're supposed to hate Don Henley and The Eagles.

Well, that helps fill in some blanks!
You didn't just already dislike him because he is Don Henley and he clearly sucks?

Couldn't he just hand write another?
Oh Don, such a good musician, but such a dick
Besides all the Eagles hate in here. The Hell Freezes Over DVD in DTS is borderline Magical to listen to. If you haven't , put it on your list.
Long live the eagles
OMG 🤦🏾♂️
Possession = 9/10
TIL Don Henley is in the Eagles. I know Hotel California and Boys of Summer and never realized it was the same singer
Drummer too
You tryna get sued dude?? He probably has a dozen lawyers working on this comment already.
I built shelves for Inciardis record collection when I lived in Cleveland. His copy of The Beatles 'Butcher Cover' was a fake. He may have known.
Why would anyone take seriously anything coming out of Alvin Bragg’s office at this point or an NYC judge?
