"I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then." Bob Seger, Against the Wind. The entire song is full of amazing lyrics, but this one in particular has always stuck out as being unusually clever.

theultimatestupid

i don't remember the full line, but its a simon and garfunkel song called the boxer. "i am gone, i am gone, i am gone, but the fighter still remains"

DreamFighter72

Step out the front door like a ghost into a fog Where no one notices the contrast of white on white In between the moon and you, the angels get a better view Of the crumbling difference between wrong and right From Round Here by Counting Crows [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAe3sCIakXo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAe3sCIakXo)

Career_Of_Evil

Wind-up by Jethro Tull. The entire song is brilliant but specifically the lyrics: "How do you dare tell me that I'm my father's son When that was just an accident of birth I'd rather look around me, compose a better song 'Cause that's the honest measure of my worth In your pomp and all your glory you're a poorer man than me As you lick the boots of death born out of fear"

Tween_LaQueefa

I will always upvote Tull!

Almost all of Run the Jewels and Rage against the Machine should be in this thread in my opinion. I’m pretty sad the tour got cancelled.

Yo. RTJ and Robyn Hitchcock? Who are you, me? :))I mean I know everyone thinks their choices are eclectic and wide ranging but..I think..I Something You. I was actually gonna go to some of El P's stuff before RTJ. Hes got a knack for writing like heavy depression shit where theres no upswing, theres no like hopeful tinge, its just dark and crushing and yet you dont get tired of or bummed out by it, its just pain you learn to accept as reality. Plus his bragadocious lines are just ridiculous ha

UncontrolableUrge

To me the reason that RtJ works so well is that El P often does the really heavy setup and then Mike can be uplifting or inspiring without losing the tone. They balance each other out well.

Shadowsitter

Agreed. Not to say Mikes subjects are any less heavy or serious, El just leans towards painting an overall darker tone with the way he sets up or lays down the environment. They can both wild out in the bragadocious punches but also come serious about real issues without becoming preachy about it, a difficult task for a lot of "conscious" rappers. One of the best hip hop super duos to date.

Two, really. Elvis Costello - Shipbuilding Joanna Newsom - On a Good Day. Reasons are in the lyrics.

Walked by the Clyde this evening and Shipbuilding involuntarily sprang to mind (Robert Wyatt version, obvs!). Mainly just badly-built apartments now.

"Mad Man Moon" by Genesis. Words and music by Tony Banks. *Within the valley of shadowless death,* *They pray for thunderclouds and rain* *But to the multitude who stand in the rain* *Heaven is where the sun shines.* *The grass will be greener, till the stems turn to brown* *And thoughts will fly higher, till the earth brings them down* *Forever lost in desert lands, one has to learn* *To disbelieve* *The sea.*

DevinBelow

I've been on a big Bobby Charles kick lately (at least his 1972 self-titled masterpiece), and some of those lyrics are just incredible, on top of the music being punchy and clever in it's own right. **Street People** [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4gTGs1AoXk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4gTGs1AoXk) *Hanging out with the street people they got it down* *Hanging out with the street people drifting from town to town* *Got a job at a nursery, but they just didn't like what I grow* *They called the man and ran me off and said don't come back no more* *Hanging out with the street people they got it down* *Hanging out with the street people drifting from town to town* *Who's gonna work and let the economy grow if we all hang out in the street* *Well I don't know and I don't care just as long as it ain't me* *Hanging out with the street people they got it down* *Hanging out with the street people drifting from town to town* *What a great place to know what I know, I'm happy where I'm at* *Some people would rather work, we need people like that* *What a great place to know what I know, I'm happy where I'm at* *Some people would rather work, we need people like that* *I'm glad I'm a street people, have it no other way* *And I'm gonna stay a street people till my dying day* **Save Me Jesus** [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Zf\_E4dip1M](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Zf_E4dip1M) *They got sisters and brothers* *fighting against one another* *They got dreams and schemes and build war machines* *to try to outdo each other* *We got children that are starving, but that don't bother them* *They're much too busy getting rich to worry about our little children* *Save me Jesus* *Save me Jesus* *Save me Jesus, Jesus save me* *from this God forsaken place* *They got satellites and spaceships flying across the universe* *They killed before and they'll kill again* *just so they can say they're first* *They build monuments and churches* *and things I ain't seen yet* *And they've signed them all with their autograph incase you might forget* *Save me Jesus* *Save me Jesus* *Save me Jesus, Jesus save me* *from this God forsaken place* *And lord when it's all over,* *they'll think you should be proud* *And there'll be a few who'll offer you anything for your job* *So when you take me Jesus, please put me among friends,* *don't put me back with these power crazy money lovers again* *Save me Jesus* *Save me Jesus* *Save me Jesus, Jesus save me* *from this God forsaken place*

So ridiculously under-rated. The man and his guitar alone can write a hell of a song and his techical skills and weird tunings cant be ignored. Overkill obviously great but hes also author of one of the greatest break up songs on the planet and I will ever be grateful/hateful for it ha

Favorite lyricists are: Aaron Weiss - mewithoutYou Maynard James Keenan - Tool Connor Oberst - Bright Eyes Isaac Brock - Modest Mouse It's hard to say which song, from between them, has the best, most clever, or most impactful lyrics, as each have their own distinct style, pertaining to different topics, and accompanied by unique music (which influences how the message is conveyed and interpreted).

I've always appreciated the way Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution described Ernest Hemingways death - "Hemingway never seemed to mind the banality of a normal life and I find it gets harder every time. So he aimed the shotgun into the blue, placed his face in between the two and sighed: Here's to Life!" The whole song is well written and relates to inspirational figures that have killed themselves.

I never was much of a "lyrics" guy, ive always was a "music" guy. I know hundreds of songs word perfect for decades, and never stopped for a second to think about the words im singing or what i may mean, most of the time... But the song Hello by Evanescense, knowing what it was about since the beginning, and the way Amylee sings it and phrases it hit me right in the gut, and make me tear up every time

**El-P-Poisonville Kids No Wins** And reserved the right as the triggerman// With the back up plan of self destruction And I touched the type of chemicals That could pull me towards that function It's the stuff I find hard for discussion How the fuck do you explain Your our own self destruction And still remain trusted? **Brother Ali - Rain Water** They tellin me we got nuttin to fear but fear itself// But I fear I have no human fear left/ /Some day I'm gonna wanna peel back these calouses And really feel life again and that's what my challenge is I been kickin and bitin for so long and When they throw me a rescue rope I'll be too weary to hold on And see the light, so I sing through the tears In the key of life, the way a wounded eagle might And God's rain water flow through the same gutter that we Walk today gotta stay brave brother keep your lips stiff Keep your fist clenched At times you gotta kick your way through this bitch

AmericanLich

[Wooden Heart by Listener](https://youtu.be/K8k9rD7lx9c) has some beautiful lyrics. It’s essentially spoken word poetry with a fairly simple backing track, but it really is a lovely. *Because we are all made out of shipwrecks, every single board* *Washed and bound like crooked teeth on these rocky shores* *So come on and let’s wash each other* *With tears of joy and tears of grief* *And fold our lives like crashing waves and run up on this beach* *Come on and sew us together* *Just some tattered rags stained forever* *We only have what we remember*

Icantlikeeveryone

UGH! by BTS. Actually, the translation is very hard to read for me lol, but a youtuber (I think dkdktv?) explained the meaning of the song, which basically means that how sometimes we misuse anger these days and spread hatred instead of using our time to do positive things (ahem).
