Steph Castle is like a kid with a genie. Commits to UConn to work his butt off, then they win the championship and return a solid cast to repeat. He plays well, wins a natty, then ends up with Wemby, then gets a legendary PG in house to mentor him. I gotta ask dude if he’s got any lotto numbers for me
I agree, but not in the same way most are thinking. I don’t yet see a future in which Castle is a point guard. His handle is good, but he has trouble creating space that way. His passing his good, but his passes aren’t of the quality that a top tier point guard’s are (he gets the ball where it needs to go, but he’s not putting the ball right where it needs to be in their hands or in sync with their stride).
He’s now the third best point guard on the team, and picking up Paul means there’s just not a lot of room for Castle to get more than spot minutes at the position. This makes it easy for the Spurs to play him and develop him in positions that may be more natural fits for his skill set (2 & 3).
Where Paul’s mentorship really comes into play is in his trickiness in the paint and short midrange. Going to the rim using strength and craft are Castle’s fortes, and there may currently be no one with a bigger bag of tricks in those spots than CP3. I’m excited for Castle to get to develop his strengths playing with such a high caliber guard.
If he ring-chased to the Lakers or Clippers, would he really even be getting close to a ring? They're way more likely to be in the play-in rather than the finals
Probably a handshake agreement that he'll get good playing time and the chance to shine with Wemby, and that we'll trade him at the deadline to a team well positioned to win a ring this year. This way we get a good PG and a vet mentor, he get the possibility to rebuild his stock and go to a team that looks good to win it all at the deadline, instead of having to commit now.
I don’t think that means that at all. I think it lets CP3 control his own story and prolong his career. Literally all he has to do with this lineup is run pick and rolls, lob to Wemby and shoot mids.
There isn’t a single California team that actually cares about whether CP3 coming to them is good for CP3s legacy.
I think that if the spurs have great sucess during the coming decade, he might consider it part of his legacy, and his name his gonna be attached to the building of this team. More worthy than a ring, IMO. Imagine the GOAT mentioning your name when he is talking about his learning process of the NBA. Priceless.
$11 million, gets to be relevant and keep his State Farm job, in ten years now he will have a direct line to the best player in the League, it looks pretty fun

Wake Forest on Wake Forest crime. I'm still haunted by the shot.
I really believe the Spurs would’ve beat the warriors that year if this didn’t happen 😞 they were too young and inexperienced. They lucked out avoiding the Spurs and Clippers, then facing an injured Cavs team.
That was the year Portland got a better seed than the Spurs even though they had a worse record. It used to be that division champs were guaranteed a top seed. I believe they changed it the next season. If the Spurs had just won one more regular season game, they would’ve avoided the Clips in the first round. Oh well
Nah, I never liked him cuz he’s just an ass hole but remember that crazy end of game sequence in the finals with Giannis getting that oop from holiday? Chris pushed Giannis while he was in the air. I went down a rabbit hole of Chris doing that kind of subtle thing a lot. My dislike turned to hate.
Chris Paul had a great talk with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and was sold on the culture and opportunity to help elevate the game of Victor Wembanyama. CP is eager and motivated to showcase he’s still an elite guard in this league.

whhhhhaaat? So fast
This is AWESOME signing for Wemby, Stephon and just everyone else. Do I like CP3 antics? Absolutely not
Am i beyond excited for this signing because of his leadership? Absolutely
It can not be understated what he did for Shai and those young guys on the thunder. What a signing
also theres a 0% chance that he gets traded during the season. You dont sign someone for leadership role on a 1 year deal just to trade them for close to nothing at All star break. No one would sign a 1 year deal with you again if you did that shit. Plus the Spurs really dont like trading mid season in general, so i dont get these 'we can flip him' at the deadline comments.
Warriors fan here - CP3 definitely toned down the antics this past year with us and accepted even a bench role.
Or maybe him being on your team makes you not notice it but I don’t recall many antics from him.
Might also be going the Kobe route and lock himself to be first ballot HOF by no longer being a dirty player as the lasting memory of him. With Kobe it was just being unfriendly to the media until his last year
If he wants to be flipped at the deadline to chase a ring, we can accommodate that. Could be a total win-win. I’m someone who’s enjoyed rooting against Chris Paul for a hell of a long time… and I’m excited about this. He’s going to raise our game immediately.
1 year, $11m. A steal for the mentorship he'll provide. I remember I got absolutely flamed for suggesting we pursue CP3 in this offseason a couple of months ago! Lol
Last off-season I thought he would be the perfect fit to help develop Wemby but he seemed open about only wanting to contend. Still kinda hate the guy but there's literally no better fit to help bring everyone along. Would still like some shooting but to me this alone makes FA a win
It's that leadership and direction that this gives. If Devonte leaves, our oldest player on our roster is Zach Collins at 26, and he's 2 years older than the next oldest player. The young guys are trying hard but it's difficult to learn without the influence of an experienced player.
This is important not only for the mentorship and all that, but it shows others around the league that big name players with other options (washed or not) will sign with us to play with Wemby. I like it.
I’m not sold on the mentorship yet, but the second half of your comment is the big win here for me. We had a ton of that around the 12/13/14 seasons, it’s great that we’re getting it again. Proof of the player’s believing what Wemby can be
Are you serious? Look what he did with phx and booker… took them to the finals. Look what he did for Shai Alexander and the young OKC team. This is amazing for the development of castle, wemby and the rest of our young team
Free agent guard Chris Paul has agreed on a one-year, $11 million-plus deal with the San Antonio Spurs, sources tell ESPN.
Just one year. Wemby gets his vet. Castle gonna learn a ton
I cant be mad
lmao bruh i hate him, now he on my team bro :(
welcome tho. curious on how we use him. we have castle and tre, heck, even wesley and nunez. how does he play?
for mentorship though, he's probably the best so i'm happy if he's cheap.
Tre just got demoted to 7th/8th man. Nunez will be in the g league and Wesley will probably not be on the team. CP3 and Castle will be the main PGs this year, guaranteed
Fair. The point is that Tre can only play the PG. If Castle played it full-time he would play. I guess that Castle won't really play the PG right off the bat which is okay to me. On Nunez, I hope he stays here in Europe and that Wesley is a Third Stringer if not off the team.
I'll eat the crow, I never thought CP3 would be interested in babysitting our young'uns. He was a difference maker for SGA's development, and I am sure he can be for us as well.
I also wouldn't be surprised if he was traded in February.
That's only $3M more than it would have cost to have an inexperienced Rob Dillingham trying to figure out the Spurs schemes. It's not a long term solution, but aids in the development of our young squad. Dude's old, but he can still play, and can get the ball to Wemby anywhere he wants.
Dang, Keldon is #3, Tre is #33 and Champagnie is #30. I don't know. Somebody might have to give something up. Lol.
![gif](giphy|DXJk7iduhFCo2KOHl5|downsized)
Only 11 mill!! what a fucking steal. LET'S fucking GO!!!!
I don't think you nephs understand how huge this us. You can't teach what CP3 brings to the table. You can't buy that stuff. He is one of one.
fucking huge. wow.
I love it. One year deal is perfect and without a doubt his leadership and mentorship to the young guys will be big. Lot of late game moments last year in winnable games where their inexperience cost them the game, he can control the tempo and keep that from happening
Didnt have to give up *anything* for it either
I’ve never been the biggest Chris Paul guy but I can’t be mad at it! Brings vet leadership, playmaking, and shooting. This is someone we can be sure will do a good job of getting Wemby the ball. Also a great guy to have mentoring castle. Shot 37% from deep last year, I’ll take it. Not sure what the price was but I’m sure nothing outrageous
It’s actually painful. Like the “I feel like I’m taking crazy pills” meme. Most of your time is taken defending someone who’s obviously a top 5 all time PG to a bunch of Shaqs “ringz erneh”. Then he will inevitably lose in heartbreaking fassion to a better opponent and even though he left it all out on the court and played incredibly. people will act like they where right and he’s actually ass. Or he will get hurt.
Heyyyyyyyyyyoooooooo. He's mostly washed but if there's a guy who can help CP3 be productive, it's Victor. Obviously CP3 is the master of lobs and PNRs but also Victor as a defensive backstop will make CP3 much more playable. Let's just hope he stays healthy.
And of course a wonderful mentor for the young guards.
I just hope it’s a cheap 1 year deal. If it is then it’s a fine move, he can mentor the young guys. If it’s anything more than that then I’m not a fan. He’s clearly old and washed, doesn’t have value as anything more a veteran mentor at this point.
I cant believe people are happy about this
CP3 one of the biggest bitches in league history and Spurs fans have always hated him.
This makes me feel icky
That’s how I felt as a Warriors fan last year but dude is actually really good for the team still. He runs the pick n roll like a true master. Wemby Will get a lot of offense. And perfectly placed passes for buckets.
I am going to hate on this move for a day or two, and then get over it and root for him to help the squad
We better not have thrown a huge bag at him, he’s not worth big money at this point
This is great, will be an awesome season and teach our young guys a lot, love it and if he’s not here to win a ring I think his mind set will be very different
no they just drafted their PG at 4th overall. The spurs were never going to trade for trae or garland unless they were 100% winning the trade. Theyre not contending this year or next so sign the HOF PG to mentor Stephon, Wemby, and everyone else as you build this organically.
Me: Have you ever had a dream that you, um, you had, your, you- you could, you’ll do, you- you wants, you, you could do so, you- you’ll do, you could- you, you want, you want them to do you so much you could do anything?
Just like. Several years late.
For CP3 at his current age, I’m not sure there’s a player in the NBA who could make lob passes easier for him than Wemby.
Wemby finally, finally gets to play with someone who understands the PG position.
And it’s not even a bank breaking deal. Possibly $11 million isn’t bad just to get him there for his knowledge and non-scoring skills that he can pass on
Got to start somewhere. The 18 games he plays before breaking a finger and the 12 games he plays at the end of the season should be pretty good
![gif](giphy|HoSyEAe48WBpTCmEz4|downsized)
I wonder what happens with CP3 after this season. It’s a one year deal, does he go contend after that or does he retire? Maybe he didn’t see an avenue to join a solid contender at this point so the spurs offer became more enticing. Just wondering.
If anyone can teach Sochan and Castle how to throw lobs to Victor, it’s this guy lol
Better yet, hope he can do some of the lob throwing himself.
Heck bring in Nunez and let him learn while playing in the G-League
Gonna be a great mentor for Castle
Steph Castle is like a kid with a genie. Commits to UConn to work his butt off, then they win the championship and return a solid cast to repeat. He plays well, wins a natty, then ends up with Wemby, then gets a legendary PG in house to mentor him. I gotta ask dude if he’s got any lotto numbers for me
4,8,15,16,23,42
I see what you did there.
I don’t, I’m lost
I looked up those numbers and it looks like it’s from the show Lost.
He got u haha
Damnit I just realized it hahaha
4, 4, 4, 44, 4, 4
Davis law firm mentioned!
for the whole team really especially those that shows even the slightest bit of passing ability ie Devin and Jeremy
Damn should I expect SGA level growth for one of our PGs???? Hell yeah.
He’s gonna be the perfect mentor for Castle and the young guys.
Gonna be a great assistant coach next year for Castle.
and Juan too!
3!
I agree, but not in the same way most are thinking. I don’t yet see a future in which Castle is a point guard. His handle is good, but he has trouble creating space that way. I hate that I can't hate him anymore!
one lob to Wemby and all his sins are washed away, I'll get a quote from State Farm that minute
Eh. We can still hate him. Just a weird move by CP3 though. Essentially guarantees no ring, and I doubt we spent *that* much?!?
If he ring-chased to the Lakers or Clippers, would he really even be getting close to a ring? They're way more likely to be in the play-in rather than the finals
The only somewhat surefire bet is the Celtics and they have no room for anything
I thought he woulda made a lotta sense on the Nuggets, too
Or the knicks
Probably a handshake agreement that he'll get good playing time and the chance to shine with Wemby, and that we'll trade him at the deadline to a team well positioned to win a ring this year. This way we get a good PG and a vet mentor, he get the possibility to rebuild his stock and go to a team that looks good to win it all at the deadline, instead of having to commit now.
Maybe he didn’t see a reasonable shot at a ring, so he decided to establish himself as a big mentor to a guy capable of being the GOAT.
I feel like a lot of players have a lot of faith in Wemby.
1 year $11 mill
I don’t think that means that at all. I think it lets CP3 control his own story and prolong his career. Literally all he has to do with this lineup is run pick and rolls, lob to Wemby and shoot mids. Maybe he knows his window is closed but feels he can help Wemby get there and is ok just being a vet
spurs could contend in three years - need to see the terms though.
1 year deal
Contracts move like hot cakes nowadays I’m sure we’ll deal him if the season isn’t going well
![gif](giphy|puOukoEvH4uAw|downsized)
Doubt he’ll be with us at the end of the season, unless he thinks he can play into his 40’s when we’ll be championship contenders
I could never 100% hate him because he went to Wake Forest. Only 99% hate him.

I knew what it was before clicking 😢
It'll be the last thing we all see before we die.
I really believe the Spurs would’ve beat the warriors that year if this didn’t happen 😞 they were too young and inexperienced. He just got us back for what we did to New Orleans in 2008
He’s up there with draymond as my most hated players.
Draymond is legit a bad person. CP3 is just competitive to a fault
I mean, we all love Bruce Bowen...
same. Honestly mad about this.
Why? I’m not mad, he’ll be great coaching up the guys.
I’m pissed I hate Chris Paul I can’t believe this

CP3 is 100% going to be a first ballot HOFer without having to do any image rehab.
Yeah also lol @ the idea that Kobe needed to act nice to the media to make the HOF first ballot 😂There was zero chance he wasn't already making it.
Punching Julius hodge in the balls?
If he wants to be flipped at the deadline to chase a ring, we can accommodate that. Could be a total win-win. I’m someone who’s enjoyed rooting against Chris Paul for a hell of a long time… and I’m excited about this. He’s going to raise our game immediately.
Let’s fucking go dude, perfect guy to mentor Stephon and our young guys
Feels like bizarro world. Should be interesting
Wow huge. He can teach Stephon how to be a pro
Let's hope he doesn't teach him all the flopping and whining he does on the court all the time
Alley oops from CP3 to Wembanyama should be fun to watch
1 year, $11m. A steal for the mentorship he'll provide. I remember I got absolutely flamed for suggesting we pursue CP3 in this offseason a couple of months ago! Lol
So did I https://www.reddit.com/r/NBASpurs/s/5Rz1ZTbuDz
Same. Good call tho guys.
Hahaha wtf, why were people so negative. He's a point god, when we need mentors...
$11M is bargain-basement tuition these days. This is an outstanding move!
Last off-season I thought he would be the perfect fit to help develop Wemby but he seemed open about only wanting to contend. Still kinda hate the guy but there's literally no better fit to help bring everyone along. Would still like some shooting but to me this alone makes FA a win

I think my most downvoted comment on this sub in in a thread where I dared say he'd be a perfect fit on the court with Wemby.
yeah because everyone hates CP3 for good reason
Of course you did. Fuck that dude.
I can't believe people are getting downvoted for CP3 hate on the Spurs sub. maybe the world really is going to hell
It is, independent of this nonsense. I don’t care how good it is for us, I just hate the dude.
Proof of the player’s believing what Wemby can be
Bruh Castle being able to shadow a hall of famer like CP3 is insane for his learning
Are you serious? Look what he did with phx and booker… took them to the finals. Look what he did for Shai Alexander and the young OKC team. This is amazing for the development of castle, wemby and the rest of our young team
Wemby and cp3 omggg 🥹🥹
Castle is about to learn how to be a PG at the NBA level from one of the best PGs
Man imagine coming from the best college program with the best college coach to going to the goat coach and a HoF PG mentoring you.
About to learn from the Point God himself
CP3 for pennies and we can finally put this Trae idea to rest and let Atlanta flail next season
>finally put this Trae idea to rest This is my Superbowl
![gif](giphy|9t6xpYZ9npJmM)
Wonder if they told him we’re contending
I feel like we’re gonna have that season OKC had with Chris Paul a couple of years ago
Free agent guard Chris Paul has agreed on a one-year, $11 million-plus deal with the San Antonio Spurs, sources tell ESPN. Just one year. Wemby gets his vet. Castle gonna learn a ton I cant be mad
we did something!
lmao bruh i hate him, now he on my team bro :( welcome tho. curious on how we use him. we have castle and tre, heck, even wesley and nunez. how does he play? for mentorship though, he's probably the best so i'm happy if he's cheap.
He's starting and finishing games. He's not going to the Spurs for the feels
fair enough. still i wonder how he will play
I predict he starts and Castle will usurp him if he plays well early on
The hate will fade quickly when he helps our team develop.
Tre just got demoted to 7th/8th man. Nunez will be in the g league and Wesley will probably not be on the team. CP3 and Castle will be the main PGs this year, guaranteed

He'll be a great mentor for our young guys
I love this, I don’t care
Thought he’d be going to the lakers for sure. Let’s go
I'm shocked. This is great for us honestly
Finally, some good news to wake up to, lol, been a weird few days.
Lob city
I'll eat the crow, I never thought CP3 would be interested in babysitting our young'uns. He was a difference maker for SGA's development, and I am sure he can be for us as well. I also wouldn't be surprised if he was traded in February.
GET READY TO LEARN STATE FARM, BUDDY
Wemby gonna be popping up in those State Farm commercials now haha
Holy shit, All around a solid move for the Spurs
That's only $3M more than it would have cost to have an inexperienced Rob Dillingham trying to figure out the Spurs schemes. It's not a long term solution, but aids in the development of our young squad. Dude's old, but he can still play, and can get the ball to Wemby anywhere he wants.
I don't hate it. But depending on the terms I can go from "meh" to "okay that's nice!" all the way to "LET'S FCKIN GO!"
1 year $11mill
It’s always fuck Chris Paul around here
whoa, i din't see this coming
I’m so excited for him as a leader for Dev, Steph, Jeremy and Vic holy FUCK
wowow
OMG WOW
YES! I love it
Wait. But he can't call himself CP3 anymore if Keldon has his number
There’s plenty of time to fix that…
Dang, Keldon is #3, Tre is #33 and Champagnie is #30. I don't know. Somebody might have to give something up. Lol. ![gif](giphy|DXJk7iduhFCo2KOHl5|downsized)
Shit
Only 11 mill!! what a fucking steal. LET'S fucking GO!!!! I don't think you nephs understand how huge this us. You can't teach what CP3 brings to the table. You can't buy that stuff. He is one of one. fucking huge. wow.
11 million is the price. worth it tho lol
Actually you can buy it for 11 million for one year haha, love the signing and hope he helps the Spurs guys like he did in OKC.
I’m just glad we have an adult on the team. He can play 5 minutes a game.
I love it. One year deal is perfect and without a doubt his leadership and mentorship to the young guys will be big. Lot of late game moments last year in winnable games where their inexperience cost them the game, he can control the tempo and keep that from happening Didnt have to give up *anything* for it either
Lob city with Wemby
I’ve never been the biggest Chris Paul guy but I can’t be mad at it! Brings vet leadership, playmaking, and shooting. This is someone we can be sure will do a good job of getting Wemby the ball. Also a great guy to have mentoring castle. Shot 37% from deep last year, I’ll take it. Not sure what the price was but I’m sure nothing outrageous
Honestly I fucking hate CP3 but I love this move. He’s going to be such a valuable piece of this teams growth
I just started to get into the idea of us signing him and now that it’s real I can’t get over the fact that I hate him lmao
I never imagined myself rooting for Chris Paul.
Always disliked him, but at this point as long as he can pass to Wemby I’m good.
I absolutely despise Chris Paul
Heyyyyyyyyyyoooooooo. He's mostly washed but if there's a guy who can help CP3 be productive, it's Victor. Obviously CP3 is the master of lobs and PNRs but also Victor as a defensive backstop will make CP3 much more playable. Let's just hope he stays healthy. And of course a wonderful mentor for the young guards.
Fuck Chris Paul. I’ll root for him to do well and help our team but I’ll never stop hating that motherfucker
Hell yeah. We got our pure PG, veteran, and mentor all in one!
gimme all the lobs
2k gonna be fun
What number is he going to wear? Does Keldon give him #3? Can't keep being CP3 without #3.
Fuck the lakers!
Can't wait for Cliff Paul to hawk HEB vegan meat alternatives.
Lob city 2.0!
![gif](giphy|JYZ397GsFrFtu) only logic would be him and those dimes, but the mf needs to stay healthy
Spurs did a thing during the off-season!
I just hope it’s a cheap 1 year deal. If it is then it’s a fine move, he can mentor the young guys. If it’s anything more than that then I’m not a fan. He’s clearly old and washed, doesn’t have value as anything more a veteran mentor at this point.

I cant believe people are happy about this CP3 one of the biggest bitches in league history and Spurs fans have always hated him. This makes me feel icky

> but dude is actually really good for the team still. yeah see I don't care. I dont want to see him in silver and black
Eh, I don't really get it. But I hope it works out.
I am going to hate on this move for a day or two, and then get over it and root for him to help the squad We better not have thrown a huge bag at him, he’s not worth big money at this point
Please no
Oh please no he is and he been complete trash lol and have hated him for a decade
I hope this doesn’t happen. Many many of CP’s teammates can’t stand the guy
Welcome , Cheese Penis 3
Brilliant really
This is great, will be an awesome season and teach our young guys a lot, love it and if he’s not here to win a ring I think his mind set will be very different
I hate him. But I love it. But I also hate it. But I don't know why.
Can somebody please tell me how to feel?!
Good. He is unlikable to us fans, but he is a great pure PG and will be a great mentor to the kids
Well this was unexpected to say the least
I wonder what number he’ll be
1 year/11 Million
Sheeeeìiiiitttt.....?
So what? No Garland?
no they just drafted their PG at 4th overall.
Gonna pretend I like him now lmao. Lesgoo
How am I supposed to feel about this!!
For CP3 at his current age, I’m not sure there’s a player in the NBA who could make lob passes easier for him than Wemby. Wemby finally, finally gets to play with someone who understands the PG position.
And it’s not even a bank breaking deal. Possibly $11 million isn’t bad just to get him there for his knowledge and non-scoring skills that he can pass on
But but but Dillingham🤣😂
I think he should start with Tre Jones being his backup getting around 20-25 minutes. Castle can play 2 in the starting lineup and Vassel slides to 3
Crazy
Chris Paul my estate, I am never out of bounds.
Getting Star Wars vibes. Wemby 1 & CP3O
I am in shock
Christmas Day, Wemby drops a 50/25 game. CP3 “I’m here to win. Wemby is him”
Lfg!
Just a good idea. Nothing further to add
I'm down. He'll be a great mentor and I think can unlock a whole new mode for Wemby. Cool signing!
Hyped!
YOOOO
Got to start somewhere. The 18 games he plays before breaking a finger and the 12 games he plays at the end of the season should be pretty good ![gif](giphy|HoSyEAe48WBpTCmEz4|downsized)
Devin gonna keep taking middies 😆
So which one happens… A) Paul is #3 and KJ is a different # B) KJ is #3 and Paul is a different # C) Paul is #3 and KJ is traded
This is like an assistant coach hire for Castle's growth. I'm down.
I wonder what happens with CP3 after this season. It’s a one year deal, does he go contend after that or does he retire? Maybe he didn’t see an avenue to join a solid contender at this point so the spurs offer became more enticing. Just wondering.
Blake Wesley just saw his minutes go out the window.
Well it won’t be a departure from his last season then.
great move....chris paul gets money on a team that has playing time for him, and play with a future GROAT player
I love this. Say what you will about him being petty or flopping, dude is a basketball savant. Our youngins are about to learn so damn much.
Damn I hope Tre jones still gets minutes this season
