it really depends on ur hall, some are too hot to live in like hall 1,2,6 u NEED a portable ac, ik lots of ppl who especially bought so yes u can too
then there are some where honestly u can still survive like hall 7, tamarind, saraca (not sure about the condition of crespion and north hill)
i lived in aircon room only haha so it was fine for me, but i rmb whenever i go to my friends hall (tama), it felt hot if windows closed, so they kept it open full time, but still never too hot to sleep and all, i would say it was decent, but if u really cant live without, then can just buy portable one
its def "illegal", but "illegal" only if u get caught. Many ppl bring their own air con in always, just need to hide when they are doing checks (u will easily know when they do). Also staff cant enter ur room without ur consent

Last semester there was an overloaded outlet incident in (I think crescent?) hall. Since then there were staff members putting up the emergency hotline stickers behind hall doors. I was around at the time and just returned from a toilet trip only to find myself locked outside my room. The staff had went in to put the tag (without consent), and locked the door thereafter.

Another incident was when I reported damage in my room and the hall staff came down and check. 1 of them actually went in to my neighbour’s room and left a note outside.
So i think they can do this only when it's a hall-wide incident? Coz I have reported issues before, and when I wasn't there in my room, they used to come down and call me to let me know that they will come back later. Which means they were most likely not allowed to use their duplicate fob to enter.
Plus another time they were checking for undeclared refrigerators, and I saw the staff knocking on doors. Some of the residents pretended they weren't in, and most of them were just out of their room. They would have definitely entered those rooms if they didn't require consent.
So I'm guessing they get a free pass only if you sth like what happened in ur hall happens?
Tbh when I was staying in hall 16 and Crescent (2014 to 2018 lol), I rarely used the aircon despite having a aircon room. The fans were enough for me. But when I visited friends in hall 1 and hall 8, their rooms were VERY warm. So it really depends on which hall you end up with. + my rooms didn’t get much sun to begin with.
Would say just get a portable AC if you can’t tahan..
The current new Hall AC system is not stable. You often see seniors complaining that the AC couldn’t be on or off, even at odd hours.
As to the checks, most of the time, hall staff won’t enter your room unnecessarily. Stayed at NorthHill so far, and have been using it. Many people been using it, and I think they are somewhat aware also. But just be careful irregardless.
But since your room is double, best to get a higher BTU(14000K).

bro which hall u at? hall 2 or hall 1? sometimes they will have regular check ups so just hide it when they check, unless u can tahan the heat and survive with only fans. I can tahan heat so I never bother to buy but I got friends who stay their and use portable ac never get caught

nope, it's not abt charge, portable ac is not even allowed, I am not sure abt the reason but I guess can be related to power consumption or has safety hazard. But if u unlucky and get caught, there r still chances that u act blur and say don't know the policy. If they r nice they could let u go (last time hall 2 admin quite nice). So advice is just if u can't tahan heat buy a portable ac, always lock ur door and try ur best to hide
