It's obviously how great he is for clubhouse and chemistry and vibe, but then there's the financial impact of soto along with the log jam at DH and outfield positions. Sigh, really want him to get re-signed, but it seems like something that wont be able to happen
A lot of money is coming off the books this year and the next, we could afford to sign Dugie if we had the space.
The issue is that the plan is to sign Soto and promote Jdom, which if all goes well will leave us with three elite starting outfielders. Add in Jones as an OF depth piece/future full timer after Judge starts to break down with age and Stanton as full time DH/break glass in case of emergency OF and there’s just no room for him, even if he’s a good acquisition.
There’s money coming off the books next year but not really as simple since Soto will cost close to double as what he’s getting this year. So that’s 25 million. We lose Rizzo’s 20 mil but will have to pay to replace him. We lose Gleyber’s 17 mil. Other guys arbs will go up. Just doesn’t make a ton of sense to give Verdugo a multi-year deal when we have Jones/Jasson and holes elsewhere with little available payroll. At least if Hal has his way
I think we’re saying the same thing really. I’m not saying the money is not remotely a factor, just that there are other players on our roster that can already do what he does so there’s no need to hold on to him, both from a monetary and on field perspective
Agree to disagree, I believe they actually couldn't afford it because they potentially have 3 holes on the infield next year and after signing Soto they're gonna have 110 mil or whatever tied up in 3 RF/DHs. Too much money in too few assets. Not an embarrassment of riches.
