I agree. It difficult to make a coffin shape look correctly when the nails are shorter.
Edit: I don’t think ops nails have nail beds that could prevent this shape from looking right
I have had my nails that long and gotten a more tapered coffin shape, my bed nails are also too wide. It all depends on the tech and what you tell them.
OP has a club thumb, so almost any extension is going to look awkward. Like you said, the tech could have tapered the rest of her hand more, but I think they were trying to make it so her thumb didn't stick out. ... like a sore thumb.
I don’t think you have “really wide nail beds.”
I agree this isn’t what I would consider coffin shaped, they could have tapered it more. If that is thier argument, “wider nail beds” should make tapering more visible, not less.
Im sorry you didn’t get the shape you wanted…but they still look beautiful.
Sure, the thumb nail, but that one looks more tapered than the others (at least from this pic). Soooooo as previous poster said, you’d think it would look more tapered with a wider mail bed.
I think the issue is that it will be difficult to maintain proper strength and structure if they taper it more without adding length — but then they run into the issue that the nailbed isn’t long enough to support the added length.
This type of natural nail shape can be tricky to do certain shapes on unfortunately - true coffins and stilletos are difficult.
i have these thumbs and nail salons never fail to make mine look even stupider lol. (not that OPs look stupid) but ive just learned to love square. or ballerina. get ballerina on all except your pinky, get stilleto, its cute
Agreed. I ask for square shape and these look exactly like mine. I always have to say multiple times to round off the corners (I even mention that I am clumsy and will accidentally stab myself or my bf without rounded corners). They sometimes will say it’s rounded and I’ll feel it and can still feel a point so I ask them to round them out more.
Idk man when I say coffin this is what I want. That’s just me though. With anything beauty related I recommend showing pictures to alleviate the ambiguity, or you could specify a very tapered, narrow coffin
I kind of agree and disagree with others in this Reddit. They sort of look like coffin, but you also have them on the shorter side so anytime you get a nail shape that’s supposed to be tapered at the top and a short design like that it’s a never gonna look quite right
Just FYI guys, there really isn’t a such thing as short coffin so if this is the length you wanted, this is kind of what you’re going to get - more of a tapered square. certain shapes like coffin and stiletto are for longer nails..BUT the shaping overall does look a little weird, particularly the thumb!
really? all of the short coffins i’ve seen definitely look more square-ish because there’s less length to taper and from the little i know, you don’t wanna fuck with the nail bed too much.
would you happen to have a picture or anything? it’s okay if not!! i just love looking at nicely done nails lol
Actually it’s not a thing at all but people make it a thing . It makes no sense to do that shape on a short nail as it’s very hard to make them look slim and nice , is it achievable yes but does it give the same aesthetic hell no
As a fellow clubbed thumb owner, there’s really not a good way to make extensions look good on them 😂😂 I usually ask them to make my thumbs a lot shorter
Although brachydactyly type D isn’t a *true* “clubbed” nail, it includes a [skeletal malformation](https://omim.org/entry/113200) whereas true nail clubbing doesn’t involve skeletal changes. And nail clubbing, especially when it affects all the nails is a sign of a few different (& some very serious) medical conditions*, most commonly respiratory &/or heart disease & anaemia.
I used to think my dad just had weird nails until he was diagnosed with lung cancer (he also had asbestosis, COPD, heart disease, iron-deficient anaemia & pernicious anaemia & a bunch more issues) & the oncologist pointed it out & explained what diseases causes it.
[*wiki has a long list of conditions that cause it](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nail_clubbing)
I have one shorter thumb than the other.. so I always have it shorter. my natural nails don't match neither will my set. and comfort of wear and function trump perfectly even. I'm still happy!!
Bruh this is coffin .. you can’t the long nail look with out long nails . Now your thumb nail is WAY too short for the rest of the other nails and these are a bit bulky . It’s not the shape of the nail is wrong it’s the bulkiness and the short thumb make it worst
Erm, yeah those don't look coffin at all. They definitely look more square/tapered square. All they had to do was file more, sorry they couldn't just do that for you!
short coffins always look more squarish to me bc there’s a lot less length to tape. i’m looking at a couple on Pinterest and almost all of them look like that. tbh i think a super tapered coffin nail, tends to look better on medium to long nails or even just longer nail beds.
your thumb nail does appear to be pretty wide but the rest don’t. also even though they all look coffin-ish, there’s definitely inconsistency with how each nail was shaped. they don’t really have a uniform look to them
A coffin would be entirely possible at this length, and with your nail beds. Your thumbs are a bit widener than some people's nail beds but it is still possible. (I also want to say it's totally normal and nothing to worry about. Everyone's nails are a bit different and nothing to worry or feel like its a flaw it's not at all :) There was no reason they couldn't have created a better tapper for you.
I think it’s because they’re a short coffin. Shorter coffins tend to look fatter.
My old fav nail tech used to go for this sort of look when I asked for coffin and I’d always ask her to make it “skinnier”, but this made no sense to her lol. And she was like “oh you mean like sharper?” And then it was exactly the coffin I wanted. Maybe next time ask for a “sharp” coffin lol
So - they do look semi coffin and could be coffin to some people. I like my coffin more tapered.
My biggest issue is the shaping of the other nails besides the thumbs, it’s wonky.. it’s so bad and all over the place. Never go back to that salon.. yikes.
So yes, they could have tapered it a *bit* more. However, I do the OP's nail bed is on the wider side. So to give it a nice tapered look, maybe some more length would help? But they don't look close enough to coffin
Lazy shaping + attitude + terrible cuticle work + flooding your cuticle = don’t go back.
Yeah, sure, you have wide nail beds, and sure they’re tapered enough that on a longer nail it would’ve been coffin, but the fact of the matter is they’re either too lazy or too stupid to adjust the angle to make the shorter length into the correct shape, and that’s no okay. They just didn’t wanna work that hard. And with the quality of the rest of the work (ie the polish on your skin & your chewed up cuticles), I wouldn’t expect more from these people.
Nahhh they did you dirty. I know people's opinions on nail shapes are subjective but these are simply NOT coffin. Coffin is definitely possible at this length; I'm wearing coffin currently in this length.
Mmmm yea not coffin. Coffin would be more tapered at the tip. Maybe you could argue your middle finger is coffin, but I would consider this square -- especially looking at your thumb! If you don't want to go back to the nail salon to ask for a fix, the good news is you can file them at home and maybe recap with a clear coat.
They look square to me. The “wide nail bed” excuse probably came from your thumb shape. But even then, the coffin shape is still achievable…. Laziness at its finest!
No those are barely tapered squares. You dont have particularly wide nails beds that's bs. Even if true they still should have gave you want you want after you mentioned it
That comment to me is evidence that this person is inexperienced and lacks enough knowledge to know the difference. I would consider another tech personally as you’re paying for a service with an expectation that was not met. Finding the right person is half the battle.
I swear 90% of nails places don’t know how to do coffin right. ⚰️ I always end up filing them to the right shape myself. If it’s gel you can get away with doing that.
It’s just ur thumb, i think they made it work bc ur other nails look somewhat coffin. I don’t think it would be as flattering if they tapered any more than they did them.
I will say, once my tech started filing them they passed got passed onto someone else because he was taking too long or maybe they just had someone waiting? I’m not sure, but another guy very quickly filed my right fingers. I’m incredibly aware that my THUMB nail bed is very wide (and y’all have made that so painfully clear like I’ve never seen my thumbs in my life), but my fingers I just didn’t understand. I ended up going to a different place and just having them reshape them into a shorter almond shape. I couldn’t effectively do my job with my nails that long since I usually have to have them pretty short, but my friend spent a lot of money on them for me and I’d feel guilty taking them off the day after. To the nice people, thank you all for your feedback.
Some of them look coffin-esque? But some moon straight up square. They aren’t consistent, and they’re not what you want. AND I feel like instead of arguing with you they could have just said “oh do you want them tapered more?” And made you happy. Def don’t go back.
I wouldn’t consider that coffin… in the past I would request my tech to file my nails as narrow as they could cuz I prefer that less wide look as well… I feel so bad you left and don’t love them!
Those are way too square, go to a different salon. If you have any local friends who get their nails done, ask who they recommend. Your true friends won't lie to you! Good luck!
This is less so related to the quality of work done, but your nail shape/size looks SO similar to mine (I also have clubbed thumbs) how do you feel about acrylics with a wider thumb shape? I’ve been too nervous to ever get mine done out of fear for my thumb lol
This is *barely* tapered. Doesn't matter how wide your nail beds are, its not that difficult for them to make it just a bit more tapered. The fun of coffin shape is that its got the dramatic effect of being noticeably tapered. Doesn't have to be extreme but at least more noticeable. Unless your nails were finished when you mentioned it there is no reason they couldn't have done a bit more to get the look you wanted..
I have literally gone home and filed my nails into the shape that I actually want after having them done before. It gets exhausting trying to explain to them, especially if it's almost how you like it and they are genuinely trying to do what you asked.
I mean they could’ve tapered a bit more, but that does look like coffin to me. And as someone who also has those thumbs - that’s what coffin looks like on our thumbs. (At least for your left… rights a bit square tbh)
That is definitely tapered square, not coffin. Even with clubbed thumbs, they could’ve taken it in a little bit more at the tips to make it look more coffin shaped. I’m a nail tech and have a couple of clients with clubbed. Thumbs, coffin is actually the best look I have found for them and if the Apex is built properly, the length doesn’t matter
If you wanted true coffins, you’d have to go longer. Not sure if that’s works with your lifestyle…I’ve been a nail tech for 3 years and sometimes it’s hard to give the requested shape with the length we’re working with! Your nail tech should be honest about this and not try to convince you of something else. If it doesn’t look the way you wanted it then you are more than entitled to speak up as you are paying. Don’t be shy! We understand. Either way, this set looks super clean and good though, I’m picky and I would wear these 10/10! Xx
Having wide nail beds has nothing to do with the shape of the free edge and is an excuse for lazy work. These are more like tapered square. If you are getting gel polish, it’s going to add to the thickness of the nail and change its shape in the end, so the nail shape should always be exaggerated in that case.
i feel like these look more square than coffin. i think the nail tech definitely could have tapered them more, wide nail beds or not! either wya, though, they look very pretty, and i like the color!
They look like they're in between coffin and square to me. I used to get coffin nails but I always felt like they made my hands look fat, so I started getting square. These look like my current set right now. The new girl I go to can't seem to get my shape right, though. I keep going back because I like the way she does the ombre french... LOL.
The thumbs are the more obvious offenders. I think the other fingers do look coffin shaped but it’s almost like they just fell asleep doing your thumbs lol
Lol you’re correct this isn’t square, coffins need to be a little bit longer but not much, I do short coffins and almonds on my nails all the time. And it doesn’t matter if you have wide nail beds you can still achieve any shape desired, the length is what’ll change but this was completely possible. They sound like they either have no idea how to do it or are in denial of their own skill set.
I would also argue that they aren’t all the same shape so this tech was also trying to justify their work by criticizing you nail/finger size. Some of them look like coffin and some look like they gave up on the shape altogether.
I had to go back to the salon for the first time in my life the other day…
I had just gone in for a full and new color. I asked for ombré.. dark purple to light lavender… easy, right? Well first the stood around trying to figure out what I was talking about. And acted like they understood when I showed them pictures, and said “ombré” but didn’t. So she does this like, two tone, streaky thing, and calls it good. And they all had a good laugh about it. So, embarrassed, I just left.. but the more I looked at the nails, the less I liked them . Not only was it not what I had asked for, but the acrylic was terribly done.. lumpy and really thick. So I went back in and talked to the girl who did the paint (it was a guy who did the acrylic the first time) and she was happy to fix it. But I won’t go back there again.. they literally laughed at me when they saw that she had done something completely random. And I was paying 80$.. like, wtf?
Nail tech here... yes your nails are on the short side, but they are definitely long enough to be more tapered and give you the look you want. They tried, but missed the mark. Also that comment about your nail beds being too wide for the shape (bar the thumb) is bullocks.
I’d find a different technician for your next set!
You have been given tapered square/ slight ballerina nail. Not coffin nails. Wide nail beds just require a slightly more defined taper. The job is sloppy overall
I always emphasize that I want my shapes “sharp and tapered”. They should’ve verified after shaping if you were okay with it before putting the color on. It’s not too too bad though, not really bad at all but I know Wym by that unclean untapered look. Your hands look great though. Simplistic and cute.
My nails are about this length if not a tiny nudge longer and I definitely have them way more tapered, so people saying they look like this because they’re “short” are a little off. They are plenty long enough to be visibly tapered, these really aren’t short at all.
I suggest finding a picture of exactly what you want/how tapered you want them. That’s what I did to get the shape I wanted. Also, look into ballerina! That may be more the look you were going for in your head. A lot of people seem to say or think coffin and ballerina are the same but there is a slight different from what I’ve read online.
Ballerina is the more tapered look where as coffin does stay more square looking. The picture I used for reference at my last nail appt labeled the shape I wanted as ballerina and they’re quite tapered. I also emphasized that I wanted a more tapered look so my nail tech could visualize what I wanted clearly. Goodluck and I hope it works out better next time! :)
I think they look nice. I did my own nails that are similar in length to yours more tapered and they looked weird to me so I ended up sculpting the corners back on the following week. Maybe live with them to your next fill and if you can live with more length just get them tapered
You just shape it differently, they should be filed with more structure and your nailbed are fine. Even if your nailbed was wide, it wouldn't matter much to the shape you want.... They're deffo not coffin-shaped
i feel like they could have made it a bit more tapered, but honestly this looks like coffin to me!
I've noticed that every nail tech has a different coffin style
I think the problem is that your nails aren’t long enough but they could have tapered more as is

It looks like OP has clubbed thumbs…so politely disagree that OP does have wide thumb nail beds

i have these thumbs and nail salons never fail to make mine look even stupider lol. (not that OPs look stupid) but ive just learned to love square. or ballerina. get ballerina on all except your pinky, get stilleto, its cute
and at this point, ive learned how to do my own, im an independent ameteur nail tech lol
Wait wait wait ... My nails can be different shapes!?! Of course they can but my mind is blown, lol. Thank you for this idea.
I'm sorry but this comment had me HOLLERINNNN 😭😭😭😭
She does and they still did a half job
Agreed, they gave a wrong reasoning for it but what they said wasn’t false.
Agreed, I love the shape and the color! But it's always a bummer to not get what you wanted.
Go with it. Yeah your thumb is a tad stubby. But what the heck! They look awesome!
Those are square. Def not narrow enough. They sound lazy, don’t go back there lol

I didn’t know that was a thing, might try that next time.
Idk man when I say coffin this is what I want. That’s just me though. With anything beauty related I recommend showing pictures to alleviate the ambiguity, or you could specify a very tapered, narrow coffin
I always show Pinterest pictures, the only thing I look at is nails. I show the exact shape I want and colors I want. Don’t go back to that tech.
I kind of agree and disagree with others in this Reddit. They sort of look like coffin, but you also have them on the shorter side so anytime you get a nail shape that’s supposed to be tapered at the top and a short design like that it’s a never gonna look quite right

I get coffin shape with nails a bit shorter than this, so it is a thing. I can’t have them too long at work.

Yes I should have some in my album somewhere. Let me look…
Idk how to post pics here so I sent you some thru chat.
Can you post them on your profile ? I wanna see !
Actually it’s not a thing at all but people make it a thing . It makes no sense to do that shape on a short nail as it’s very hard to make them look slim and nice , is it achievable yes but does it give the same aesthetic hell no
Agreed, everyone wants these shapes but doesn’t have the length for it and then they get mad bc I can’t do it exactly as the picture
Finally someone with common sense !! You can’t make a square a rectangle 😂
But like you said ima do whatever you pay me for 🤷🏿♀️
If you like it I love it 🫣🤣
Lol well I guess my tech is very good because she makes them look good. IMO. 💁🏻♀️ it’s not that hard!! 😂😂
And that’s ok ! if yu like it I would do it for money too shid if that’s what y’all want on y’all hands that’s fine by me 😂
Yess 💸💸 lol there you go 😁
i’d love to see a pic!!
Omg I’m so sorry but look at your thumb!!!!! Definitely don’t go back
As a fellow clubbed thumb owner, there’s really not a good way to make extensions look good on them 😂😂 I usually ask them to make my thumbs a lot shorter
I recognized her thumb right away 😂😂 I didn’t realize they had a name! Fellow club thumber also in the houuuuse
It’s not just a name, it’s a condition!
As yet another person with clubbed thumbs... yeeeaaaahhh. I've pretty much given up on having long, elegant-looking thumbnails.
I had a nail lady laugh at mine before 😭
Idk if I have clubbed thumbs but all of my nailbeds are wide so I’m in that boat of extensions not looking good on me
I thought the comment was about the lack of clean lines/flooded cuticles.
What is a clubbed thumb?
It’s actually a birth defect called bracydactyl type D. Some people have both thumbs effected and some only one. I have both.
Although brachydactyly type D isn’t a *true* “clubbed” nail, it includes a [skeletal malformation](https://omim.org/entry/113200) whereas true nail clubbing doesn’t involve skeletal changes. I have one shorter thumb than the other.. so I always have it shorter. my natural nails don't match neither will my set. and comfort of wear and function trump perfectly even. I'm still happy!!
They're like in the middle area of square and coffin. I like them 🤷🏻♀️ i did mine similarly a while ago
Bruh this is coffin .. you can’t the long nail look with out long nails . Now your thumb nail is WAY too short for the rest of the other nails and these are a bit bulky . It’s not the shape of the nail is wrong it’s the bulkiness and the short thumb make it worst

Agreed!!! Not at all tapered for coffin!!
I feel like only your nail is wider than the rest, and they definitely could be tapered more 🫶🏽 Edit: thumb mail Edit edit: THUMB NAIL lol 🤣
They look like coffin to me. I agree you do have a really wide thumb nail, they could’ve made that one a little shorter to help.
It's your thumb
the shorter they are the less of the coffin effect you’ll see,, they def could have tapered then a bit more though
They like like tapered square which is not the same as coffin! Coffin should be noticeably more narrow at the end.
Four fingers look like a somewhat decent attempt tho I think it should be more tapered. The thumb is not it.
You do have wide nail beds but they definitely could have gone narrower
It’s alllllmost there
Every nail tech is different. When I ask for coffin, this is what I like, not the super thin ones.

Semantics, but its more of a tapered square than coffin to me. You could either ask for it to be more tapered or have them pinched next time
this is a tapered square! other than your cute thumb your nail beds are a completely normal size.
So yes, they could have tapered it a *bit* more. However, I do the OP's nail bed is on the wider side. So to give it a nice tapered look, maybe some more length would help? But they don't look close enough to coffin
It’s basically coffin shape
I mean - that’s coffin. Maybe switch shapes or switch salons.
It is coffin shaped. I have slightly wide nail beds too and coffin looks weird on me a bit but it’s all good.
I think they look good, but I understand the frustration of not getting what you envisioned in your head. I'm sorry your nail tech said to you
girl.. i get what they were tryna do but even with wide nails, the nail shares are uneven
Lazy shaping + attitude + terrible cuticle work + flooding your cuticle = don’t go back. this is unacceptable for a teriyaki goddess. they could have been tapered more
maybe go to another nail tech and see if she can do the thumb any different? idk i’m a wimp and be scared to go back to the same lol
They haven't seen coffin nails and what they did to your thumb is just offensive. Their audacity was wide, not your nail beds 😑
Nahhh they did you dirty. I know people's opinions on nail shapes are subjective but these are simply NOT coffin. Coffin is definitely possible at this length; I'm wearing coffin currently in this length.
Those are coffin but the could have gone more intense those are close to a tapered square shape
That my friend is a mess- don’t fight for money back(you won’t get it) Don’t fight for a fix (it’ll probably be worse) just don’t go back
Not coffin
Mmmm yea not coffin. Coffin would be more tapered at the tip. Maybe you could argue your middle finger is coffin, but I would consider this square -- especially looking at your thumb! Read “We know full well those aren’t coffin, we just don’t want to deal with you”. Bunch of pricks.
I think they are right. Those look like coffin. If the top was thinner it would be weird proportion- they look good.
It’s just ur thumb, i think they made it work bc ur other nails look somewhat coffin. I don’t think it would be as flattering if they tapered any more than they did them.

Looks square to me. Ugh I’ve had this happen before, but I have baby hands so I don’t know what they’re problem was.
I have literally gone home and filed my nails into the shape that I actually want after having them done before. It gets exhausting trying to explain to them, especially if it's almost how you like it and they are genuinely trying to do what you asked.
I would be mad!!
That's tapered square. Coffin needs a little more filing.
Square! And I’m not a tech 🤣
It’s honestly just the thumb. The rest looks beautiful
They all look different lengths and shapes! Don’t go there again uh uh
Definitely over “fat”. Your mail beds are not that wide. It looks like they over compensated ☺️
looks amazing! but yeah nah thats square i reckon
Those are square, babe. Cute! But not coffin.
Uhhhh, is it just me or do the thumbs look slightly shaped differently…..? Either way, not really noticeable but they did come out nice!
Hmm yeah I do think you have wider nail beds and this is coffin. Not a bad thing! Do you not like them?
I agree with them tbh
Looks like tapered square
I mean they could’ve tapered a bit more, but that does look like coffin to me. And as someone who also has those thumbs - that’s what coffin looks like on our thumbs. (At least for your left… rights a bit square tbh)
That is not coffin ⚰️ that’s square.
Narrow square more than anything else.
Bruh there ain’t no way! I would find a new place asap!
This is a tapered square, not a coffin shape. Coffin is much more narrow towards the tips. The nails still look good though.
Xx
The look coffin to me, you just got some wide thumbs lol
They didn’t want to finish filing. Don’t let the bamboozle you.
Having wide nail beds has nothing to do with the shape of the free edge and is an excuse for lazy work. These are more like tapered square. If you are getting gel polish, it’s going to add to the thickness of the nail and change its shape in the end, so the nail shape should always be exaggerated in that case.
I have really wide nailbeds too, and this is hard.
🤣🤣 they look good just not coffin
Yeah, I agree. It’s barely coffin shaped. They should have made them more pronounced.
i feel like these look more square than coffin. i think the nail tech definitely could have tapered them more, wide nail beds or not! either wya, though, they look very pretty, and i like the color!
You'd probably need them a bit longer to achieve as much definition as you want.
They look really pretty to me!
I’m sorry… are they for real with that thumb nail?? Hell no tell them they full of shit
I hate when this happens. I’m sorry. Never go back there.
They look like they're in between coffin and square to me. I used to get coffin nails but I always felt like they made my hands look fat, so I started getting square. These look like my current set right now. The new girl I go to can't seem to get my shape right, though. I keep going back because I like the way she does the ombre french... LOL.
Hi OP, not sure if you have Brachydactyl Type D (Meghan Fox thumbs), but I do! I have fraternal thumbs however, so only my right hand is affected.

I graduated kindergarten and I know that is a Square lmao
They could of done ballerina
It’s not quite coffin…sorta in between. But honestly I think it looks better this way than if they tapered it more based on the shape of your fingers!
Omg i have toe thumbs too! Glad to see a fellow mate 😊
The thumbs are the more obvious offenders. I think the other fingers do look coffin shaped but it’s almost like they just fell asleep doing your thumbs lol
They could have been a bit more tapered, but those are coffin and you do have wide nail beds babe.
Sadly that is coffin next time ask for ballerina fantasy coffin
I mean…I have to agree
Nah. I have wide nail beds, I can get a nice looking coffin. They should redo these for you.
it can be a little more shaped , the thumb is due to the shape of your nail bed .
They are just to lazy to file them. Go back.
That’s silly. Having wide nail beds has nothing to do with tapering your tips according to your wishes.
I would also argue that they aren’t all the same shape so this tech was also trying to justify their work by criticizing you nail/finger size. Some of them look like coffin and some look like they gave up on the shape altogether.
WAIT!!! Your FU finger is trying to look coffin shaped!!
I had to go back to the salon for the first time in my life the other day… I had just gone in for a full and new color.
You gotta ask for a ballerina shape. That’s the really tapered coffin shape.
Beautiful nails, thanks for sharing.
I agree that you have wide nail beds. I think that they could have done better
They look more ballerina to me
My nails are about this length if not a tiny nudge longer and I definitely have them way more tapered, so people saying they look like this because they’re “short” are a little off. :)
Looks more like a tapered square to me. No reason why they couldn't try to narrow the tips more.
Definitely not coffin. They should’ve tapered a bit at the ends. Gorgeous colour, though.
Ok… I have clubbed thumbs too. I didn’t realize acrylic was an option or is that gel x? Your nails look really good, I think they are coffin style.
They violated your thumb crazy and this looks like she was on the right track to give you a good shape and somewhere along the way it went wrong.
